Two Decades of Mission Partnership In 1994, the youth leaders of the Oakbrook Terrace Corps responded to a request from the Bahamas Division to send a mission team to assist the Freeport Corps with their summer Day Camp program. What began as a one week youth group mission trip has developed into a partnership between the two locations which is now in its eighteenth year. Through the years there have been many leadership changes both at the Oakbrook Terrace Corps and the Freeport Corps, but the ministry partnership has continued through prayer, the sharing of resources, and an annual mission trip to the Freeport Corps. Each year the Oakbrook Terrace Corps sends either a youth or adult mission team to staff the Freeport Corps Day Camp for one week. To raise the funds for their trip, the team holds a Mother’s Day Luncheon fundraiser, hosts an auction, caters a dinner for another Salvation Army location, and engages in other fundraising events. One year an adult team member even held her own “To Shave or Not to

As the staff of the Day Camp, the mission team members teach the Bible, Craft, and Recreation classes and chaperone daily afternoon field trips. Each year the team incorporates time into the camp when children are asked to evaluate their personal relationship with the Lord, and many commit their lives to Christ. The team also participates in the Sunday services at the corps and they lead the weekly Home
League meeting. Based on the needs of the corps, in some years the team has led the corps’ youth club, Junior Soldiers, Corps Cadets, League of Mercy, Adult Bible Study, open air meetings, participated in a building grand opening/ dedication ceremony, sorted hurricane supplies, and completed small work projects such as painting the building. For the Oakbrook Terrace Corps, being involved in this partnership has led to spiritual and relational growth for team members. As each year’s team consists of different individuals, team members are stretched by seeing and (Continued on page 2)

experiencing things they haven’t before which grows their faith and gives them awareness of God’s blessing in their lives and understanding of their dependence on Him for everything. Oakbrook Terrace Corps Youth Pastor Lisa Jordan explains, “The yearly mission trip creates a bond between specific teammates and others who’ve gone on the trip before – which definitely promotes unity at our corps. The day before the 2011 mission team departed, I had a call from a past team member promising to pray and wishing us well, a call offering to help pay for our baggage expenses and a donation for more Bibles! I’ve had several texts from our corps family to say they’d be praying and anxious to hear all about the experience. I love that – it’s the Body of Christ functioning as it should!” This mission partnership has also enhanced the corps’ overall global awareness and increased their interest and compassion for the Army’s work around the world. Additionally, five former team members have gone on to become Salvation Army officers. For the Freeport Corps, the partnership has allowed them to have a program and reach out into their community in a way that they could not without the resources the mission team brings. Partners in Mission Next-Steps: Kalamazoo Corps Submitted by Betsy Clark, Kalamazoo Corps The Kalamazoo Corps began its partnership with Malawi about three years ago when the Partners in Missions Next-Steps Pilot Program was launched. In the initial stage, the Kalamazoo Corps World Services contributions went directly to support a project identified by The Salvation Army in the Malawi Territory. The corps decided that in order to truly understand the work of The Salvation Army in Malawi, it would be beneficial to send a team over to Malawi to learn about the culture, people, and ministries of Malawi. In March 2009, four members of the Kalamazoo Corps traveled to Malawi, where they first connected with the officers and soldiers there. As a result of this discovery trip, the Kalamazoo Corps significantly increased its World Services giving. The corps planned a larger mission trip to Malawi for the following year, in order to help with the dedication of the completed project which had been funded by their previous year’s World Services contributions. In May 2010, ten individuals from the Kalamazoo Corps traveled to Malawi to lead a Territorial Music School and serve as the band
for the dedication of the Nkhata Bay Corps Building Project. During this time, valuable friendships developed between the officers, soldiers, and friends of the two congregations, solidifying the partnership between the corps and their comrades in Malawi.

Love in Action: Senior Care
Meet Prince. He is 13 years old and lives in Africa in the country of Congo Brazzaville. He enjoys going to school and has a true love of reading. Just like children in the US, he also likes watching TV and playing sports. Prince has a desire to learn, read and has the goal to become a doctor one day. Currently he is preparing for his exams to go to secondary school, but his biggest concern was whether or not the family would be able to afford it. “My father died when I was very small and I am living with my grandmother. She is old and tired. She still cultivates the field but will not be able to pay the school fees in secondary school.” Fortunately, Prince is benefiting from the Children’s Sponsorship Program and because of your generous donations, children like Prince can continue their education. To become a sponsor of a children’s program that helps boys and girls just like Prince, go to www.sponsorship.centralmissions.org, call (847) 294-2065, or write to us at: The Salvation Army Sponsorship Office, 10 W. Algonquin Rd, Des Plaines, IL 60016.
In 2010 $140 was donated to the Philippines Territory through the Sponsorship Program’s Love in Action Project for the purpose of senior care. The Philippines Territory used the funds to host special Christmas meals for 184 senior citizens in 6 different Salvation Army corps. A small donation can go a long way in brightening the lives of others!
Reminder About Sponsorship Payment Amount The economy around the world is changing. The impact $20.00 made in a developing country five years ago is different than the impact it makes now. As inflation rates and food costs rise we need to, as responsible sponsors, make sure we are adequately meeting the needs of the poor. In 2007 all NEW sponsors started their sponsorship commitment at $25.00 a month. We have been slowly sharing this change with our sponsors who signed up before 2007 and have shared that from July 2011 forward $25.00 a month is the requested monthly sponsorship payment for all sponsors.
month. Through the Salvation Army 100% of your sponsorship donations are sent to the receiving locations you sponsor. No amount is held back for administrative purposes. This truth makes us unique in the sponsorship world.
As you may know, other sponsorship agencies have been increasing the monthly amount over the years and are now asking for $32.00 to $38.00 a
Please feel free to contact our office with any questions. We are proud to be partnering with you to support the needs of children overseas.
Thank you for understanding these changes. Know that your increase in payment will make a difference in the lives of many. With an extra $60.00 being received annually from each sponsor, children’s homes and the guardians of sponsored individuals will be able to continue to meet the physical, spiritual, and educational needs of the children.

Overseas Personnel Updates from the Caribbean Hope in Haiti Submitted by Majors Robert & Rae Doliber, Port-au-Prince, Haiti One of the large billboards along the road to work, amid the many outdated presidential campaign posters, says “Gen espwa!” – There is hope! Indeed, hope is both what we have to offer those we serve in Haiti, and what keeps us going. Hope in the unfailing promises of God, and in the future of Haiti. Espwa – or hope – for this land is seen in many ways: Education—While education in the US is mandatory and often taken for granted, in Haiti it is out of reach for hundreds of thousands of children, who cannot afford the minimal fee for tuition, books, and uniforms. The Salvation Army has made education a priority, with most of the 60+ corps/churches operating a school in rural areas where that is the child’s only hope for an education to make something of himself/herself. Assessments have been made recently to improve the quality of the instruction, increase teacher salaries (some are just US$10/month!), and start or improve school feeding programs. Plans are underway to rebuild the kindergarten, primary, and secondary schools at Delmas 2 with state of the art facilities for more than 1,600 students. Salvation—We are The Salvation Army and each week the good news of the gospel is taught, preached, and demonstrated in practical ways throughout the land. It has been a source of great hope and encouragement to see soldiers being made, corps filled to standing room only, and individuals worshipping
with hearts full of joy! Political Situation—With a peaceful transition of presidential power this month, Haitians are filled with hope for a brighter tomorrow. One of President Martelly’s slogans is “Ann gade devan” – “Let’s look ahead,” and was emphasized in his inaugural speech promoting order, economic growth, and free and compulsory education . Water—In a land where good, clean drinking water is not prevalent, it has been exciting to see hope in the completion of a water filtration system at our camp and school in Luly, and the donation this month by Rotary International of 1,000 individual portable filters which are being distributed to every classroom. Associations—We have been blessed with many rich associations which daily give us hope and encouragement. These include you, our prayer partners; our many funders (in the past few weeks we have been visited by reps from IHQ, SAWSO, Canada, Switzerland, The Dolibers with some and t h e of their recent visitors in Haiti N e t h e r lands!); new friends, and many others who come to volunteer their time and resources to make a difference; and Kindernothilfe which this past month marked the 30th anniversary of a partnership with The Salvation Army in Haiti, that has over the years paid children’s school fees, teachers’ salaries, books, uniforms, sponsored children’s homes and an AIDS orphan program, and is underwriting the re-construction of the College Verena campus destroyed by the 2010 earthquake.

Two separate wards were set up in the clinic as cases began to arrive. We were assigned a team of medical personnel from Japan in December who worked tirelessly with our staff, caring for the patients. We saw and treated 260 cholera patients between November 15 and February 1. Unfortunately, 11 patients died due to not seeking care s o o n enough. In late January, another organization, M é Captain Felix Ezeh with decines Association of Medical d u Doctors of Asia (AMDA) Monde, members treating cholera set up a patients in Bethel Clinic c o m plete Cholera Treatment Center (CTC) on Salvation Army property behind the primary school. Overseas Personnel Updates (continued) With the direct care of cholera cases shifted to the CTC, Bethel staff turned their focus on prevention, sending 100 community health workers into the mountainous, rural area surrounding Fond-desNegres. Not only were they able to teach the communities better hygiene practices, but they were able to identify people with cholera early and get them to the clinic for treatment. Early detection is the best way to prevent loss of life and we are very glad that we were in the position to serve our community in this way. At the end of January, Capt. Felix Ezeh, along with Envoy Bob Poff and Capt. Monael Many traveled to the community of Couyot, on top of a mountain range north of Port-auPrince. Word had reached us that they were beginning to receive cholera cases and they had no supplies or training to deal with this emergency. The team was able to take the necessary supplies, help Bethel Clinic accepts cholthem set up era supplies from the AMDA an area to receive the patients, and give instructions on first aid intervention and oral rehydration procedures. During the weekend, five patients received care and the corps officer was prepared to continue the care after the team returned to Port-au-Prince. Bethel Clinic has sent additional cholera supplies to Couyot to help them meet the needs of this remote mountain village. As the rains have started to fall again, there has been a rise in the number of cases of cholera. We are
working closely with Médecines du Monde for the hand-over of the CTC in December 2011. We have also received a CDC grant through our partnership with Catholic Relief Services to continue to provide community health education and intervention as well as clinical care of cholera patients for the next year. Continue to pray for the people of Haiti and the staff of Bethel Clinic as we face these difficult challenges.
On the Move After serving in Spain for 3 years, Captains Jeff and Valerie Carr, along with sons Bramwell and Jonas, have returned to the United States. The Carrs now live in the Chicagoland area and effective July 14 will take on new appointments at the Metropolitan Divisional Headquarters where Captain Jeff will serve as a Finance Officer and Captain Valerie will be the Christian Education Coordinator. In July Majors Richard and Brenda Herivel will be completing their overseas service in the Eastern Europe Territory. The Herivels will be moving to the St. Louis, Missouri area and will be stationed at the Midland Divisional Headquarters where Major Richard is appointed as General Secretary and Major Brenda as Secretary for Program.
Captain George Katchanov has received a new appointment at The Salvation Army Westsong Community Church in Victoria, Canada. Effective July 1, Captains Sergey and Tanya Katchanov have completed their service in the Eastern Europe Territory and have transferred to the Canada and Bermuda Territory where they will serve at The Salvation Army Nanaimo Community Church in British Columbia.
