A School Without Walls: A Look at the Zimbabwe School of Youth Leadership In Zimbabwe, one of the Central Territory Partners in Mission, there is a great need for young people to be trained for future service in the The Salvation Army, their communities, and their nation. The Salvation Army has established a leadership development program to help achieve this goal. The Salvation Army Zimbabwe School of Youth Leadership (ZSYL) is a year long process which focuses on facilitating spiritual, emotional, practical and intellectual growth in the lives of the participants. Each year there are 18 youth participants, one from each of the divisions in Zimbabwe. The students first gathered together in January for two weeks of orientation. There will be five additional meetings, including a crosscultural experience in the country of Botswana and a graduation session in November. In between their sessions, the students have the opportunity to apply their
leadership skills and culturalsensitivity in their own communities. Prior to their involvement in ZSYL, each student has demonstrated leadership ability in his or her corps or community. They each select an adult ZSYL students engage in small group discussions. mentor, who will model leadership for them and Christian leadership. One final component of ZSYL is a distance meet with them regularly to discuss failures, goals, vision, and education program called Chrispersonal development. All tian Leadership, offered through The Salvation Army Leadership students also keep a journal to Training (S.A.L.T.) College of record and reflect upon Africa. There are 10 units, coverlessons they are learning about ing topics such as mentoring, integrated mission, leadership and loss (bereavement/grief), using power to bring about justice, maintaining and inspiring hope as a leader and more. The Zimbabwe Territory is hopeful that by investing in the lives of these young people, an impact will also be made on the communities in Zimbabwe which they represent. Sponsorship Highlight: A Day at La Maison du Bonheur Submitted by Lt. Steve Diaz, La Maison du Bonheur Director For Jenny, a resident of The Salvation Army La Maison du Bonheur Children’s Home in Haiti, a normal school day begins at 5:30 am. She, along with the other girls, has her hair brushed and braided. After breakfast she is off to the Port au Prince Salvation Army elementary school, where she attends with 1,300 other students. School is done at noon and she returns to the Home for lunch. After lunch she has a little time to relax before the after-school programs start. At 2:00 pm all the children at the Home, along with many outside children, are called to begin working with their tutors on the school assignments for that day. Jenny loves French but is not very fond of Math. After tutoring is over Jenny loves to participate in the many extra classes offered at the
Home. Her favorites are singing, dancing and macramé. One day a week Jenny goes to the local Salvation Army church for Junior Soldier class.
bed to get some rest before the next busy day at La Maison du Bonheur. Of course the sleep always comes after a little girl talk time with her friends.
Following afternoon classes Jenny plays with the other children until called for supper. Jenny is an expert at jumping rope. After supper all the children return to the playground until called for their evening baths. Following bath time Jenny reviews the memorization she has for the next day at school. At 7:30 pm the children are called for evening prayers where Jenny is one of the louder singers. After prayers Jenny is ready for

Share Your Christmas Joy 2007 For the past 5 years, the Child Sponsorship Office has coordinated the “Share Your Christmas Joy” project to raise funds for Salvation Army children’s homes, schools, and hospitals overseas. Central Territory sponsors help to support 70 of these Army institutions in Africa, South America, Latin America, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Malaysia, the
Caribbean, Korea, Mexico, Eastern Europe and the Philippines. It is our goal to send $100.00 to each of these locations for their Christmas celebrations. If you would like to share your Christmas Joy with children overseas, you may send a check (made payable to The Salvation Army) to Sarah Kincaid, Sponsorship and Missions Support Coordinator, The Salva-
tion Army, 10 W. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, IL 60016. Please also include your name, full address and a note indicating that the donation should be applied to Share Your Christmas Joy 2007. The deadline for participation is October 31, 2007 so the funds can be received overseas before Christmas.

Divisional Relationships with Partners in Mission Since 2006 each division has been partnered with two or three of the Central Territory Partner in Mission (PIM) countries. The purpose of this partnership is to move beyond funding projects to building relationships. This past year, several divisions have pursued unique opportunities to help strengthen their relationship with their Partners in Mission. Here are a few highlights: •
The Midland and Kansas/ Western Missouri Divisions hosted Major Elba Espinoza, guest from the South America West Territory. Major Espinoza also attended Commissioning and the Brengle Institute.
•
Majors Rick and Barbara Carroll of the Kansas/ Western Missouri Division were the special guests at the Philippines Gospel Arts Camp. During the Heartland Divisional Youth Councils, money was raised to help support this event in the Philippines.
•
Two short term mission teams from the Metropolitan Division went to Eastern Europe this
summer. One team instructed at a music camp and participated at the Territorial Commissioning, while the other team supported Captains Sergey and Tanya Katchanov in their ministry. Members of both teams were blessed by the relationships they formed with fellow Salvationists in Eastern Europe. •
Several divisions sponsored guests from their Partner in Mission countries to attend NAOC this past April. The Heartland Division hosted Captain John Kumar of the India Central Territory, the Metropolitan Division supported Major Alexander Kharkov and

Mr. Anatoly Pchelinstey from the Eastern Europe Territory, and the WMNI Division sponsored Major Francis Nyambalo from the Malawi Command. If you would like to share how you are partnering with your PIM country, or if you would like ideas for strengthening your partnership, please contact the World Missions Bureau. As a reminder, this is the partnering plan for the Central Territory Divisions and Partner Countries: Eastern Michigan—Peru/Bolivia, Austria Heartland—Philippines, India Central Indiana—Congo Brazzaville, Malawi Kansas/Western Missouri— Ecuador/Chile, Philippines Metropolitan—Russia/Republic of Georgia Midland—Ecuador/Chile, Zimbabwe Northern—Zimbabwe, India Central Western—Moldova/Ukraine/ Romania WMNI—Congo Brazzaville, Malawi Wisconsin/Upper Michigan— Peru/Bolivia, Austria These are suggestions for partnering, but you are not limited to the countries paired with your division. Feel free to build relationships with and raise support for any or all of the Central Territory Partners in Mission.
International Self-Denial World Mission Fund Ideas Does your corps have a unique way of raising funds for the International Self-Denial World Mission Fund (formerly known as World Services)? Spotlight on the Strissels In February 2007, Colonels Dennis and Sharon Strissel departed for service in Ghana, where they serve as the territorial leaders. The Strissels have previous experience serving in Africa. From 1977 – 1989 they served, along with their children Scott and Sherry, in the Southern Africa Territory on the island of St. Helena and later on the mainland in appointments near Johannesburg and Cape Town. For the past seventeen years the Strissels have been praying for another opportunity to serve God in their adopted home, Africa. Their prayers
were answered when they were given the appointments of Territorial Commander and Territorial President of Women’s Ministries in the Ghana Territory. Recently the Strissels had the opportunity to commission and dedicate the Ba Clinic and equipment, a brand new laboratory in Ghana where the technicians will work to test patients’ blood. The amazing thing about the new building and equipment is that the clinic found a way to self-fund the project without asking for outside help. Colonel Dennis reports, “It was a wonderful, celebratory visit.” The Strissels went around the clinic and prayed with all who were in the clinic at the time. There were several patients suffering from malaria, they
held a baby that had been born the night before, and saw two little twins whose mother had died while giving birth.

The Strissels’ two adult children and two grandsons reside in the Midwest of the United States. They are looking forward to the birth of their third grandchild, expected in November.

Updates from Central Territory Overseas Personnel The Spain Command, where Majors Brad and Heidi Bailey and Captain Sandy Hunt are stationed, hosted a Central Territory Summer Mission Team this past summer. From the Island of Mallorca, to Denia, to Madrid, to the Canary Islands, the team moved in and out of schools, participated in beach ministries, visited a Senior Citizens Residence, and conducted Vacation Bible Schools, street ministries and Sunday meetings. The Spain Command saw many positive results from the team’s ministry this summer. The Baileys and the Central ● Major Territory SMT Eliana Cristi enjoyed a busy homeland furlough this summer with travel to the United Kingdom and throughout the U.S. Major Cristi has returned to Australia to serve for another term. ● In June Captains Philip and Sheila Davisson were able to spend some time with the Summer Mission Team in Chile, of which their son James and daughter Jaclyn were members. The Davisson family was also able to make a quick trip home to the States in August to help Jaclyn move into her college dorm at Olivet Nazarene University. ● With the help of a generous donation from the Kansas and Western Missouri Division, the thrift store at the Resistencia Corps, where Captains Willie and Cassie DeJesus are stationed, has been revitalized and the income generated covers the corps’
bills. Please pray that the corps continues to receive the donations necessary to keep the Alex and Michael DeJesus on a special trip to McDonalds with thrift interns Elyse and Viki. store open. This summer the DeJesus family was also supported by two summer interns from the Central Territory. ● Steve and Kestia Diaz report that things are going well at La Maison du Bonheur Children’s Home in Haiti. The after- school program has recently grown from 30 to 50 participants and they are thankful for the opportunity to minister to these children. Another praise report is that Ketsia has started her GED program and is taking English lessons from an officer from the United Kingdom Territory. ● This summer the Duskin family expanded with the birth of Dominic Josef, who was born on July 22 at 2:10 am. Both Dominic Duskin Dominic and his parents are doing well. ● Matthew Ezeh graduated from Kindergarten this summer and was selected to sing a solo and recite a poem during the graduation The Ezeh family at Matthew’s Kindergarten Graduation

He works primarily with refugees from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kirgizstan, and Iraq, teaching them about the hope found in God and helping them to assimilate into life in Canada. ● A short term mission team from the Metropolitan Division served with Captains Sergey and Tanya Katchanov in their appointment in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. The team’s visit was a great encouragement to the Katchanovs as they are beginning the Army’s work in that city. The team was The Katchanovs and two blessed mission team members as they worked alongside the people of the Ukraine and gained a more complete perspective of the worldwide Salvation Army. ● Captains Timothy and Camie McPherson and Zachary welcomed Nathanael Laurence into the world on August 15 at 6:45 pm. The whole family is doing well. ● In August, Majors John and Nancy Mowers assumed new appointments in Buenos Aires, Argentina. John is the Training Principal and Nancy is the Assistant Training Principal. They are adjusting to Argentine vocabulary, which is quite different from the Spanish
they learned while serving in Central America. The Mowers will return to the U.S. on December 14 and Nancy will be facing a major surgery. Please pray for a speedy recovery so they can return to Buenos Aires and complete preparations for a new session of cadets who will arrive in March. ● Commissioners William and Nancy Roberts are getting ready for their new appointments which will take effect on March 1, 2008. Two territories will be created from the existing Kenya Territory, with the Roberts taking on the territorial leadership in the Kenya West Territory. ● This summer, while on homeland furlough in the United States, Major Cindy Shellenberger had an emergency surgical procedure. Her furlough period was extended slightly to allow her to recover before traveling back to Australia. She has returned to Australia for another three year term and is currently stationed at the Norwood Corps in Adelaide, South Australia. ● The past year has been full of many interesting and new experiences for Major Randall Sjogren as he has traveled throughout the world as an international auditor. At the beginning of October, Rand visited with Colonels Dennis and
Sharon Strissel as he conducted an audit in Major Sjogren and Colonel Sharon Ghana. Strissel at a Salvation Army school in Ghana. In November he will find himself ministering and auditing in Chile. ● Commissioners Barry and Sue Swanson arrived in the United Kingdom on July 27, where they are serving at IHQ as the International Secretary for the America & Caribbean Zone and Zonal Secretary for Women’s Ministries. They are soldiering at the Penge Corps and enjoy being able to walk to church on Sundays. The Swansons have already conducted territorial reviews in Mexico and the USA Central Territory.
