Several years ago I was with friends finishing a day of skiing in Colorado when my cell phone rang. It was my daughter Keri calling from Fiji where she was on a study abroad program. If you are old enough to remember rotary phones and party lines, you will know that this was an amazing experience for me. Today’s technology and travel has made much of our global communication instant. It is no wonder that short term missions have grown from a handful of participants in 1970 to several million persons traveling from the U.S. each year. Here are a few questions each of us involved in the short term missions movement need to ask ourselves:

• •

Is our short term team kingdom minded or vacation minded? Are the long term missionaries glad we came—or were they anxious for us to leave? What long term goals can short term teams help to accomplish?

Perhaps the most important question is “what did God teach me on this mission trip?” One of the best training experiences that I’ve had came from two nationals at the National Short Term Missions Conference. One leader came from Brazil, the other from El Salvador. Both had much experience receiving teams. They gave their perspective on good, bad and ugly short term teams. The first and most important lesson I received from that session was this: team members need to be learners. The comparison was that of coming late to a meeting—being humble and quiet and listening carefully to find out what has

been happening so far. On short term mission trips we need to think the same way. God and the folks you will be working with have been meeting for a long time. Come in with humility, a servant’s heart, and the willingness to learn a thing or two. You can be sure that with Christ’s attitude your mission trip will be kingdom focused! (Philippians 2:3-8) What has been your short term missions experience: good, bad or ugly? Compare it against the questions above and drop us a line. We’d love to hear from you.
