LOVE IN ACTION LOVE IN ACTION: GIVE. CHANGE. (a life) “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” -1 John 3:18
Take away the stress of picking out the perfect Christmas or birthday gift by showing your LOVE IN ACTION and give a gift of love in the name of a friend to those in need overseas. LOVE IN ACTION is a one-time gift opportunity offered by the Overseas Sponsorship Office of The Salvation Army USA Central Territory. Our colleagues overseas have shared with us the specific needs the people in their country are experiencing right now. Needs identified for 2009 are: school uniforms, school supplies, mosquito nets, farm animals, resources
for feeding programs, mobility equipment, feeding programs for senior citizens, AIDS/HIV education and prevention, and baby kits for poor mothers which include clothes, diapers, mittens, mosquito nets, rubber mats, blankets and pillows. Through LOVE IN ACTION you have the opportunity to give financially to one of these projects and help provide for the needs of our brothers and sisters living overseas.
What gifts will you give this year? Some of our projects for 2009:

(Every 24 hours 29,000 people die of preventable diseases such as malnutrition, malaria and diarrhea)
Are the teens in your youth group in need of a reality check and an eye opener to see how blessed their lives are? According to UNICEF at childinfo.org, in 2007, 9.2 million children born alive worldwide died before their fifth birthday. Most of these children lived in developing countries and died from a disease or a combination of diseases that could be easily prevented or treated -- antibiotics for pneumonia, for example, or a simple mix of salts and sugars for diarrhea. Malnutrition contributed to over a third of these deaths. Are

Share Your Christmas Joy Report The World Missions Bureau is thrilled to announce that the total amount raised for Share Your Christmas Joy 2008 was $11,100.00! What a blessing it has been to see people give generously so that we could meet our goal in order to help others in need. With the amount raised we were able to send $100.00 to 111 homes and schools overseas! This year we were able to add locations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Bolivia, Ukraine, Uganda, Mexico and Pakistan. What a joy it was for the children and staff of the homes and schools to experience the excitement of a first Christmas party or Christmas gift. Thank you again for your prayers and donations!

Sponsorship Highlight: Dilrukshi Kumari of Sri Lanka When Dilrukshi Kumari was a very young child, her father abandoned the family, and her mother worked as a housekeeper in order to support Dilrukshi and her brother. The home where her mother worked housed a drug trafficker, and because of her association with him, Dilrukshi’s mother was arrested and imprisoned. For a short time Dilrukshi lived with her mother in prison before, at the age of four, moving to The Salvation Army Haven Dilrukshi, at age 4 Children’s Home. Now age 11, Dilrukshi resides at The Salvation Army Sri Lanka Dehiwela Girls’ Home, along with 50 other girls between the ages of 6-19. At the Home they receive accommodation, clothing, educational opportunities, and Christian instruction. The girls are encouraged to be involved in a range of extracurricular activities including sports and church camps for teenagers and music Dilrukshi, age 11 camps. They are a happy, lively group who enjoy singing and putting on special programs for events such as Universal
Children’s Day and Elders’ Day. The girls attend nearby government schools where Dilrukshi is a fifth grade student. She does well with her studies and her favorite subjects include math, Sinhala (the native Sri Lankan language), and English. Sponsorships of $25 per month help to provide nourishing food, a safe environment, educational opportunities, health care, and personal development for children like Dilrukshi who might otherwise have no hope.

Joy to the World: The Gift of Self Denial With a new year under way it is time for a fresh focus to be given to The Salvation Army’s World Services fund-raising efforts. The world will know that we are Christians by our love, and this love is manifested in generosity. To help Salvation Army Central Territory soldiers and officers better communicate this message, we are excited to introduce new World Services/Self Denial materials and resources.
These resources include: • Bulletin inserts, flyers, posters, banks, and envelopes which all use the themes of Faith, Charity and Service to emphasize God’s heart for His people and meeting their needs. Information on ordering these printed materials was sent out to corps officers the last week of January. • An updated website (resources.centralmissions.org) containing fund-raising ideas, kids’ corner, and other resources. • Four “Joy to the World” DVDs suitable for use in worship services as well as in many other settings. The themes for the DVDs work along with the printed materials: Joy in Charity, Joy in Faith, Joy in Service, and an additional theme, Joy in Partnership. The DVDs will be sent to all corps in February.
The pictures and text for all of these materials will overlap so that they can naturally be used together to promote God’s love for the nations and prompt our hearts to give financially and in prayer. Joy in Charity “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?” -1 John 3:17 God reminds us throughout Scripture that He expects us to look after the poor. Right now our country has many concerns and fears for our economy and safety. Yet we sill have so much relative to others in the world, and our generosity is needed now more than ever. Joy in Faith “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 18:3-4
Children are naturally joyful and playful, but for many the difficulties of life take away their joy and test their faith. Our giving in self denial is one way that we can uplift others, young and old alike, and bring the joy of knowing Jesus as the hope for the world. Joy in Service “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last and the servant of all.” – Mark 9:35 These words are humbling – no matter what talents or titles I might possess, the Lord is looking to see me on bended knee before Him, serving mankind who He made in His image. Service has many
forms, and can involve living and working abroad, but it starts with loving our neighbor – and that first means the people who live near us. Joy in Partnership “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” –Philippians 1:3-6 How wonderful that God gives us (Continued on page 5)

TACO Trivia Nights: A Fund-raising idea
Are you looking for some creative ideas to help raise World Services funds at your corps? Each quarter we will be highlighting a fundraising idea. This quarter’s suggestion comes from the Australia Southern Territory where a group of cadets has begun a new initiative called TACO Trivia Nights. What are TACO Trivia Nights? TACO stands for “Train A Cadet Overseas.” Corps communities come together to play a trivia game, eat tacos, raise money for world services, and have fun! A suggested donation of $10 per person should cover the cost of the food and still make it a worthwhile fund-raiser. Give attendees the opportunity to book a table of 8 in advance so they can assemble their team for the

the opportunity to partner with Him in the bringing of His good news to the world! Advances in technology now allow us to communicate with those around the world. Through mission trips and the hosting of international guests to our conferences and camps, we are better able to understand each
trivia game. Why TACO Trivia Nights? Many of the facilities for training cadets are less than adequate, and in many countries there is a waiting list for cadets because there are not enough resources to facilitate the training. Cadets Olwin and Nilla from Indonesia recently shared that they only receive a small bowl of noodles at night for dinner, their library does not have many books, and the College for Officer Training cannot even afford to send families to Commissioning celebrations! How did TACO Trivia Nights begin? TACO Trivia Nights were started by cadets at the Australia Southern Territory College for Officer Training.
other and learn from each other. Such relationships require self denial, but they bring many blessings. As recorded in 3 John verse 4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in truth.” As we search our hearts and allow the Lord to teach us to walk in truth, we can be certain that we will be given His joy – and as a result we will be part of His plan to bring Joy to the World!
In 2007 there were 2 TACO Trivia Nights, raising a total of $1,200.00. In 2008 the initiative was expanded to 10 venues, raising about $8,500.00. Where can I find trivia questions to use for TACO Trivia nights? Visit www.taco-trivia.blogspot.com. There are many different trivia questions including the following categories: Bible, Children’s, Entertainment, Geography, History, Science and Nature, and Technology. If you have a creative World Services fund-raising idea and would like to share it for possible inclusion in this newsletter or posting on our website, please email it to Missions@usc.salvationarmy.org.

Overseas Personnel Updates from South America Serving in South America West Submitted by Lt. Colonel Heidi Bailey Imagine leaving your home in Chicago, traveling 5,000 miles south to arrive in Santiago, Chile, only to find that you are home again! That was indeed our latest experience as we once again said goodbye to our daughters and Chicago, and found ourselves serving under another red, white and blue flag in beautiful Chile.
that in spite of being physically so far from home, we are emotionally at home again in beautiful Chile, learning and living our present appointment in the Territorial Headquarters in Santiago. Roads and highways and buildings may change, but friendships born into the Body of Christ, remain forever, in Chile, or anywhere! Coming Home Submitted by Captain Sheila Davisson Back in July 2008 I had a mini stroke which led to a surgery in the States in August to fix a vein in my brain. The recovery has been slow but steady.
Lt. Colonels Bailey with the President of Chile
Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador provide an amazingly colorful and varied backdrop for the realization of the Salvation Army’s mission in this part of the world, where small miracles happen every day. On the morning of December 19, we ate Christmas Bread with Michelle Bachelet, the first woman President of the Republic of Chile in the Presidential Palace, and in the evening of that same day, we ate Christmas Dinner with 40 homeless children in our Salvation Army Boys’ Home on the coast of Chile. In 5 short months, we have had the privilege of immersing ourselves again in Brad’s birthplace, in Danielle and Lindsey’s playground of childhood memories, and in Heidi’s hands-on Spanish classroom of 13 years! We thank God
On December 26, Julia and I moved back to the United States. Julia will start school at Rolling Meadows HS on January 27 and I am on medical leave until Phil returns to the States in February. We have spent three years in Chile and now we are making a shift back to the States. We are very thankful for the experiences of serving in another Territory. We have learned about another culture and language. There is so much more to learn, but for now it is time to come home.
Captains Phil & Sheila Davisson participate in a baby dedication in Chile
We will take some vacation time after Phil arrives, which will include a week in debriefing, and then we will begin our new appointment in the States. Thanks to everyone and your
support over the years financially and with your prayers. Update from Argentina Submitted by Captain Willie DeJesus It's hard to believe that we have been in Argentina for over 3 years, and we have now completed a full year in our new appointments as Territorial Youth and Candidates Secretary (Willie) and Corps The DeJesus Family Officer (Cassie). It is summer in Argentina so that means our two boys, Alejandro and Michael, are on summer break from school. They both did very well in school this year. Summer also means it's a busy time for all of us with camps and other Divisional and Territorial events. The Territorial Youth Department launched their very own Territorial Missions Team, January 5-11, 2009. The Equipo V.E.A. ("Vision in Action" Mission Team) consisted of 6 members and traveled to the northwestern region of Argentina in the city of Tucuman. They painted the corps, conducted a mini-VBS, led open air meetings, and did home bible studies. Thank you to CBLI for the special offering that allowed this team to happen! Cassie just got back from the Buenos Aires Divisional Women's Ministries camp. She and the other ladies from the corps had a very good time sharing with women from other corps. A

Overseas Personnel Updates continued few days later, Cassie and the boys left for children's camp while Willie continued to plan for the Territorial Youth Institute, held from January 22-28 for young people 13 to 30 years old from all three countries that make up the South America East Territory - Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. We were delighted to have as our special guests, Captains John and Johanna Pook from the Central Territory CFOT. After the Territorial Youth Institute, the whole family will spend a week helping out at the annual TMI (Territorial Music Institute).

offering English classes for officers and employees in the evening.
Of course tripling the number of cadets and children on campus has other consequences – lack of classroom space, difficulty in accommodating everyone in the dining room, not enough school vehicles, inadequate laundry facilities, etc. We are working to develop creative solutions. These are good problems to have because it is an indication that God is blessing the Army in South America East.
It is a tremendous privilege to train officers for this growing territory. We thank God for the support we’ve received from our own Territory.
We appreciate as always the support and prayers from all our family and friends. We can't do what we do without God and without your prayers.

He is now based out of Alexandria, Virginia where he is serving as the National Finance Secretary for The Captain DeJesus and Major Mowers with Salvation Army in the United States. prospective candidates in Argentina
God’s Blessings in Argentina Submitted by Majors John & Nancy Mowers When we arrived at the Training College in Argentina there were 8 cadets – 5 first year cadets and 3 cadets in second year of training. At this time we have 9 cadets of the Prayer Warriors session in training, and 11 accepted candidates of the Ambassadors of Holiness session who will enter the College in March. This territory has developed a great vision for growth, and God is supplying the candidates to make it happen! One of the great challenges is how to accommodate 20 cadets and their 10 children in a facility that has trained an average of only 5 cadets per session for more than 20 years. Since 2007 there have been two different remodeling projects, both funded by the USA Central Territory, to accommodate the housing needs of these larger sessions of cadets. The second round of remodeling is due to be finished about the 1st of
