World Missions The Salvation Army USA Central Territory World Missions Bureau Sacrificial giving within the Salvation Army dates back to 1886 when Major John Carleton of England decided to go without pudding for a year in order to save money to help support the Army’s growing work worldwide. William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army, was moved and inspired by Major Carleton’s personal sacrifice to benefit others, and he launched a ‘selfdenial’ fund which challenged Salvationists to make a personal sacrifice and donate the money saved to the fund. In the USA Central Territory, such giving has been referred to by several different names including Self Denial and World Services. In 2002, General John Larsson took self-denial giving to a new level with the implementation of the Partners in Mission initiative. While the personal giving of Salvationists is still a main focus, this new concept also allows various Salvation Army territories to become true partners in ministry, praying for

each other, learning from each other, and encouraging each other. Also the name of the fundraising effort was changed to a more encompassing name, “International Self Denial World Mission Fund” or ISDWMF. While the annual selfdenial ingathering and collecting of money that has been saved through sacrificial living occurs each spring, corps and individuals are encouraged to put aside these funds throughout the
year.

As we continue to give to ISDWMF and build relationships with our Partner in Mission Territories, we will truly become “world Christians” as we are more informed, involved and aware of God’s love for the nations.

Two Central Territories Partner in Mission India is the Salvation Army’s oldest mission field. The Army’s work in India began in Bombay on September 19, 1882 by Major Frederick Booth-Tucker. Along with other Salvation Army pioneers, Booth-Tucker not only engaged in evangelistic work, but also began various social services to help provide relief from famine, flood, and disease epidemics. The Salvation Army also opened elementary, secondary and industrial schools to provide education for those who might not otherwise be able to afford classes. In 1893 The Salvation Army began providing medical services in India. The Salvation Army’s work in India has continued to grow and today there are six Salvation Army territories in that country alone. The India Central Territory, named in 1992 with the headquarters in Madras (Chennai), is one of the USA Central Territory’s Partners in Mission, specifically paired with the Heartland and Northern Divisions. These are some of the ways the India Central and USA Central Territories have partnered over the past few years: • In 2005, the USA Central Territory hosted Major Daniel Raju, Social Services Secretary of the India Central Territory for one month. Major Raju attended the Territorial Congress, visited several social services sites throughout the territory, and

Sponsorship Highlight: Eluru Girls’ Hostel, India The Salvation Army in the India Central Territory is involved in many social services efforts, particularly the care and education of children through Salvation Army schools and children’s homes. One such example is the Eluru Girls’ Hostel, a residential home for young girls. The hostels in India are set up to house children, starting at age 6, whose families do not live near a school. There is often a waiting list of girls who are hoping to obtain a spot in the hostel, but because of finances and space the Eluru Girls’ Hostel can only accommodate up to sixty girls at a time. The hostel is located on a compound which includes several other Salvation Army facilities including a corps (church), school, Divisional Headquarters, homes for Salvation Army officers, and an open field where the children enjoy playing. There are also banana trees on the compound which help to provide some of the food for the residents of the hostel. The Salvation Army provides the girls living at the hostel with shelter, food and educational opportunities. The children attend the Salvation Army school on the compound

and are also educated spiritually as they participate in daily devotions, prayer time, Bible study and character building classes. The girls live in one large room together where they sleep on bunk beds. While the children in the hostel do not have many material possessions, the smiles on their faces show the joy that they have in their hearts. The Eluru Girls Hostel is very thankful to its sponsors who make it possible for them to provide care for these young girls in India.
The Salvation Army Central Territory offers the opportunity to support our brothers and sisters overseas financially and prayerfully through sponsorship. New sponsorships of $25.00 per month will help provide nourishing food, a safe environment, educational opportunities, health care and personal development for the children of a Salvation Army home, institution or school. For more information or to become a sponsor, contact Sarah Kincaid at Sarah_Kincaid@ usc.salvationarmy.org or (847) 294-2065.
Share Your Christmas Joy Report Thank you to all who participated in the 2007 Share Your Christmas Joy project. We are pleased to announce that this year we exceeded our $7,000.00 goal and raised a grand total of $10,421.81. The money was distributed to 104 Salvation Army children’s homes, schools, and hospitals overseas to be used for a Christmas party, gifts or special meal for the children in the institutions. Thank you for helping to bring joy to the lives of these children this Christmas season!

Project 24/29*
Project 24/29 / Partners in Mission—Page 4 (*Every 24 hours 29,000 people die of preventable diseases such as malnutrition, malaria, and diarrhea)
In November youth from the Metro Division participated in Project 24/29 held at the Oakbrook Terrace Corps. This event is designed to bring awareness to the youth of The Salvation Army about world hunger and preventable diseases that affect people all over the world, and teach them about the part they play in fighting for those whose voices are not being heard. Before the event, participants received pledges from donors and sponsors to help children around the world who are in need. The event began when participants finished eating their lunches on Friday, November 16. For the next 24 hours, the participants fasted while also engaging in community service projects, educational activities regarding world hunger, and Bible Study. Later that evening, all participants gathered together for the divisional Prayer and Praise Night of group devotions and worship. After Prayer and Praise, a modified game of dodgeball was
played, which emphasized the inequities and differences between developed and developing countries. On Saturday morning the group served breakfast to kettle workers and enjoyed a time of devotions with them. For the next two hours, Project 24/29 participants engaged in activities at four different stations. At one station letters were written to senators and the president regarding issues with the Jubilee Act and Farmers Bill. At another station a discussion about homelessness and world hunger was facilitated, and signs were made from cardboard containing statistics about these issues. The group then stood on street corners to display the signs and help raise awareness about these issues to the community. Participants were also able to spend time in the prayer room, praying for the country of Zimbabwe, and doing research in a com-
India Central Territory DVD From September 14-24, 2007 a territorial team of Major Ralph Bukiewicz, David Andrews and David Minter traveled throughout the India Central Territory to interview Salvationist leaders and videotape various Salvation Army ministries. An enhanced DVD with video segments and program resources is being produced and will be distributed in the USA Central Territory in early 2008. This resource is designed to educate, inspire and engage Salvationists in their support of these and
other international ministries. It is our hope that you will plan to use this resource during your worship services or integrate it into other program activities within your corps.
puter lab where participants read about world hunger from websites such as bread.org and worldhunger.org. At the end of the period of fasting, Lt. Colonels Robert and Marguerite Ward, Program Secretaries, shared about the four years they spent serving with The Salvation Army in Zimbabwe. The fast was broken with a traditional Zimbabwean meal and time of sharing. This year all money raised through Project 24/29 will be sent to the Zimbabwe Territory, which has been experiencing high inflation rates affecting the supply and demand of food and causing many people of the country to go without food and basic necessities. If your corps or division would like to participate in Project 24/29, contact Sarah Kincaid at 847-294-2065 or Sarah_Kincaid@usc. salvationarmy.org for more information.

Keep the Fun in Fundraising Are you looking for some creative ideas to help raise ISDWMF funds at your corps? Each quarter we will be highlighting fund-raising ideas. Here are some suggestions to get you started. Around the World in One Meal! Corps members prepare and donate food items (entrees, snacks, desserts, beverages) representing their heritage. Tickets are sold at $.50 each for the a la carte purchase of native dishes from a variety of countries. Rent-a-Helper – Individuals volunteer specific services such as baby-
sitting, dog walking, yard work, snow shoveling, window washing, etc. and corps members can rent their services for a fee. All funds raised are donated to the ISDWMF. Change for Change – Each family represented receives a personalsized milk jug. Every week they are challenged with a different change collecting task inspired by a hardship that other countries
may face. For example, one week’s challenge could be to donate 10 cents for every pair of shoes owned to acknowledge the fact that in the country of Kenya many children go barefoot every day and are subject to the exposure of the elements. Focus on a different country each week and a corresponding challenge. Also encourage the participants to pray for the country each week for which they are collecting money. If you have an ISDWMF fund raising idea you would like to share for possible inclusion in the newsletter, please email it to Missions@usc.salvationarmy.org.
Spotlight on the Swansons Commissioners Barry and Sue Swanson are well known throughout the Central Territory. Having served as corps officers in 6 corps, in 3 Divisional Headquarters appointments, and a total of 5 Territorial Headquarters appointments, the Swansons have invested in the lives of many soldiers and officers. In 2006, the Swansons received news that they would be moving to the United States National Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia to serve as the National Chief Secretary and National Secretary of Women’s Ministries. A year later, in July 2007, the Swansons found themselves preparing for another move, this time to London, England where they would serve at International Headquarters (IHQ). Commissioner Barry is appointed as the International Secretary for the Americas
and Caribbean Zone and Commissioner Sue is the Zonal Secretary for Women’s Ministries in the Americas and Caribbean. In their new roles, the Swansons are the General’s representatives to over 35 different countries throughout North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Part of their responsibilities include encouraging the officers and soldiers in the Americas and Caribbean Zone, representing the Zone in meetings at IHQ, and maintaining contact with the officers from the Zone who are attending the International College for Officers in England. While the Swansons are still in the process of learning about the wide perspective of the Zone, including the different ministries, needs, and strengths of the Army’s work in various locations, they have already been able to make a positive impact as they were the special guests at the Mexico Territory 70th Anniversary Congress and as Commissioner Sue was the special guest at the Mission and Purpose Conference in the USA Central Territory.
Commissioners Swanson soldier at the Penge Corps and are excited to be a part of a corps that truly cares about missions. They also enjoy being able to walk to church on Sundays. The Swansons have four grown children, three of whom live in the Chicago area. In August, their son Bear was married to Kristi and they are now living in Korea where they are teaching English. The Swansons have one granddaughter, Luella.
