World Missions The Salvation Army USA Central Territory World Missions Bureau In November 2007, college student Erica Johnson created an online shop through Etsy.com to sell handmade goods to help pay for her school tuition. While most of her sales come from the custom buttons that she makes, she also posts and sells other handmade items including greeting cards, recycled notebooks, knitted items, and jewelry. Erica is very resourceful when creating her products, and most are made from used materials that were no longer needed or would have otherwise been thrown away. The name of Erica’s online shop is Others, after Salvation Army founder William Booth’s one-word telegram to Salvationists around the world. Erica shares, “I think it encompasses who we are primarily as Christians, but also as Salvationists.” As a way of continuing to give back to others and live out the whole concept of “Others,” Erica has decided to donate all of the September profits from the Others shop sales to

The Salvation Army’s work overseas. Having lived in Chile with her missionary parents, and having participated in several different overseas missions trips as a young adult, Erica has seen firsthand the financial need that is so prevalent around the world. Erica comments, “I’ve been blessed with the materials and ability to create things to generate some income; there are so many people in the world who do not have that opportunity. This is a simple way of giving back what I am undeserving of and furthering God’s Kingdom in places I could never reach on my own. By donating to the work The Salvation Army does globally, I can
not only give people the resources they need, but more importantly introduce them to the Savior they seek.”

Sponsorship Opportunities in Kenya West One of the objectives of the Sponsorship Program is to see orphans and vulnerable children across the world reach their Godgiven potential. When children receive love, nurture, and education this goal is reached. In this issue of World Missions Perspective we are highlighting the work and needs in Kenya West at the Kaptanai, Almond, and Joyland Primary schools, as well as the Joyland Secondary school.
lives during that time. Those who suffered most were the children. Kenya West Sponsorship Secretary Major Miriam Wekesa is working hard to find the funds to re-open the school to the 554 children, many of whom are orphans.

The Salvation Army in Kenya West is directed by Commissioners Bill and Nancy Roberts of the USA Central Territory. In the few months that they have been in place, they have been warmly received, and Commissioner Nancy is known as “mama” locally, a term of respect and love.
the future is bleak for persons with disabilities, and they are often left to die unnoticed. Throughout Kenya the motto in Salvation Army schools is “Disability is not Inability” and the children and youth find dignity and hope in their school environments.
In spite of hardship, the children of these schools are joyful and chants of “karibu, you are welcome,” are heard when a visitor arrives. When a sponsor steps forward to help bring hope to children, not only are their lives changed for good, but society benefits as well. Thank you for your kindness as you prayerfully consider sponsorship of one of these schools!
The Almond Primary School offered day classes before the post election conflict that occurred in the country last year. Since then the facility has become a boarding school to give the children of the village of Bungoma a secure environment to grow and learn. Kaptanai Primary School was also deeply affected by the post-election violence. Many people in the area lost their property and some their

Reflections on Summer Mission Team 2008 United in Love
great work in Spain for God’s Kingdom.
By David Witthoff, Intern to Spain
God Is Big!
We participated in music camp at The Salvation Army’s Camp Saron in Denia, Spain, and many officers from the command were also present. The Spain Command covers most of the country, so visiting old friends is not geographically easy. As friends and collegues parted ways on the last day of camp, you could see love in two ways. First, you could see that they loved and cared about each other because of Christ and how His love had become a part of their lives. They were united in Christ as they continued to fight the same spiritual war in the same country. The other way I saw love in this instance was because of the sacrifice that they endured in leaving friends and loved ones to go to another part of the country. For the officers there, the closest corps to theirs might be 68 hours away. You see, they loved God and His work to the extent that it was their priority. Their love for God was their greatest love, and because of this they are continuing to do a
By Elizabeth Frost, Peru Team About 4 weeks into the summer , we were serving in a town called Tarapoto. In this place we had a chance to really get to know the college students in town and were able to minister to them. It was Sunday night and illness had struck over half of our team. Our team was responsible for leading a Sunday night meeting at The Salvation Army corps, but I was feeling torn between attending the meeting and caring for my sick teammates. I finally decided I should attend the meeting. Our translator delivered the sermon and at the end of his message he invited people to pray at the altar. The altar was lined with people seeking the Lord. God was really speaking that night, including speaking to me! A girl that we had been hanging out with during the week went down to the altar with her mother. I sat in my seat but I could feel God tugging at my heart saying, "Liz, go! Just go pray with her." I kept thinking in the back of my head, “God you know that we can't understand each other, I don't speak Spanish well and she can't speak English.” But I got up and went down to the altar to pray with her anyway. Somehow I found the words to tell her that I was going
to pray for her in English. So that’s what I did, I prayed for her in English and comforted her as much as I could. When she was done praying she turned, looked at me, and said " God is big!" For the five minutes that we sat there I could understand everything that she said and she understood me though we were speaking different languages. God showed me that in His Kingdom there is no language barrier and that I should never doubt the power of His Holy Spirit. God is big and He can do all things including being a translator!
Experiencing God’s Blessings in Detroit By Melissa Heatwole, Central Team 2 Our first stop this summer was at the Booth Services Center/Harbor Light in Detroit. We organized a Vacation Bible School for the children living in the Booth Services shelter and had a very large age range, with kids as young as five and as old as seventeen. We had around 30 more children with us each day, and with the help of our new friends and fellow workers, Andrea and Kim, things went smoothly for us throughout the week. Each of the team members took turns in teaching memory verses, sharing Bible lessons, teaching crafts, and leading songs. (Continued on page 5)

We were incredibly blessed by all the children. Many of them already knew a great deal about the Bible (the older kids especially) and were excited to learn more about God. We also had quite a few kids who were being raised in families of different faiths, and with prayerful sensitivity we were able to share with them about Jesus being God's Son and how our faith in Him is what saves us and brings us into the plans God has for us. On Friday we were able to offer a time of decision in the children's Bible classes and there was a great response from kids who wanted to know Christ for the first time, or to know him better. It was really amazing to be a part of these children's lives for even so few days. We formed some very solid relationships and were able to love the children

Meet Our New Overseas Officers Captains Jeff and Valerie Carr Corps Officers in Denia, Spain
Serving overseas long-term as missionaries has always been a desire for Captains Jeff and Valerie Carr. Looking back on their lives, it is clear to see how God has prepared them for their service in Spain. As a young adult Jeff Carr lived in Germany for three years while serving in the U.S. military. Valerie has also had experience living abroad while spending two summers ministering in Argentina and Spain. While in Argentina, Valerie realized how little Spanish she knew when she began working with a family who did not speak any English. By the end of the summer, after much frustration and many tears, Valerie was able to communicate in the Spanish language. After returning to the United States, Valerie was tutored in Spanish for one year as she became fluent in the language. Valerie comments, “I give God the complete credit in performing a miracle on my ear for the language as well as my ability to speak it.”
Auxiliary Captains Albert and Darlene Simmert Project Coordinator/Child Sponsorship Coordinator in Lahore, Pakistan
Though they officially retired as Salvation Army officers in 2004, Auxiliary Captains Albert and Darlene Simmert have already come out of retirement several times to serve as corps officers and to take on short-term overseas assignments.
After being commissioned (ordained) as an officer in the Salvation Army, Valerie served as the Corps Officer (pastor) in Norfolk, Nebraska and then as the Associate Corps Officer for Spanish Work in Chicago (Belmont), Illinois. Together Captains Jeff and Valerie Carr served as the Corps Officers of The Salvation Army Corps in Waukegan, Illinois. In July 2008 Captains Jeff and Valerie Carr, along with their sons Bramwell (2) and Jonas (1), moved to Denia, Spain where they are the corps officers. Their corps is bilingual in its programming. Each Sunday there are two services – one in English and one in Spanish – and a united service is held once a month. Valerie has enThis summer, the Simmerts departed for Pakistan, where they plan to serve for one year. costs are unaffordable and tap-tap costs (the local transportation) have also gone up. We are now having to pay about double the money weekly for food and none of our incomes have gone up at all! We are blessed with a constant income and I really feel for those who have no source to provide for their families.
One big challenge is that a bridge over the end of a lake on our way to Port-au-Prince (a larger city from where most of our supplies are secured) is under four feet of water. It has been like that for about four weeks and the water continues to rise each time it rains. It appears that the only egress for the lake is under a mountain and that is blocked. We hear that they are trying to cut an alternative route on top of the mountain that surrounds the lake, but we don’t have any idea when that might be finished. Currently, to get to Port-auPrince you have someone drive you 30 minutes to the edge of the lake. Since we have returned to Haiti, three Then you have someone carry you on hurricanes have hit the island, so we their back into one of the waiting are definitely soggy and feeling the small boats. Welcome to Kyle! Submitted by Envoy Steve Diaz Port-au-Prince, Haiti We are pleased to announce the arrival of our first child, a baby boy born on July 28, 2008 at 5:17 p.m. His name is Kyle Nelson Diaz and he weighed in at 7 lbs, 7 oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long. We were privileged to spend most of the summer in the States as we anticipated Kyle’s arrival and adjusted to being a family of three. We returned to our ministry in Haiti on September 30.
