Welcome Home! Saucy Pork Chops With Orange Slices
Welcome Home is for entertainment purposes only. This magazine is not intended to solicit other brokersʼ listings. If you are currently working with another broker, please disregard this information. All pictures courtesy of sxc.hu unless otherwise noted. Prep: 10 min., Chill: 30 min., Grill: 22 min., Stand: 5 min. Sweet orange marmalade is slightly less bitter than traditional orange marmalade. Either works fine in this recipe. If your chops are thinner than ours, reduce the grilling time. Yield: Makes 4 servings Ingredients * 4 (1 1/4-inch-thick) bone-in pork rib chops or loin chops* * 1/2 cup orange juice * 2 teaspoons soy sauce * 1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper * 1 teaspoon salt * 3/4 teaspoon black pepper * 1/4 cup sweet orange marmalade * 1/2 cup bottled barbecue sauce * 4 (1/4-inch-thick) orange slices Preparation Pierce pork chops with a fork several times on each side. Combine pork chops and next 3 ingredients in a large shallow dish or large zip-top plastic freezer bag. Cover or seal, and chill for 30 minutes. Remove chops from marinade, discarding marinade. Sprinkle chops evenly with salt and black pepper. Stir together marmalade and barbecue sauce in a small bowl. Brush one side of pork chops evenly with half of marmalade mixture. Grill chops, marmalade mixture side up and covered with grill lid, over medium-high heat (350° to 400°) 10 minutes. Turn pork chops, and brush evenly with remaining half of marmalade mixture. Grill 10 minutes or until done. Remove chops from grill, and let stand 5 minutes. Grill orange slices, covered with grill lid, over medium-high heat 1 minute on each side. Serve with pork chops. *4 (1 1/4-inch-thick) boneless pork loin chops may be substituted. Reduce grilling time to 8 minutes on each side or until done. Note: For testing purposes only, we used Jack Daniel's Original No. 7 Barbecue Recipe Grilling Sauce. Barbara Deem, Cincinnati, Ohio, Southern Living, AUGUST 2005

CRUISE VACATIONS Planning a vacation can be hard work. Sometimes, even taking a vacation brings so many stresses and hassles, you feel like you need a break after your holiday is finished. Cruises take away the worries and leave you with a stress-free vacation that you deserve. The beauty of taking a cruise vacation is that you don't have to drive a hundred miles in a hot car. You won't need to drag your luggage around or worry about planning your itinerary. If you want to have a vacation with truly relaxing options, a cruise ship is a great choice. Before your actual cruise begins, some cruise lines will arrange additional excursions for guests staying in the point of departure. For example, if you are departing from Los Angeles, your cruise line may arrange visits to famous places like Venice Beach and Hollywood. On the day of the cruise departure, you'll be brought to the pier where the cruise ship is waiting for you. It will take about 45 minutes for you to check your baggage and board the ship. Your room steward will take you to your room and you'll find that your luggage has already been delivered. Once you've unpacked and arranged your things, you'll be able to take an onboard tour of the ship. Most cruise ships have large balconies, so you'll be free to stroll about outside. Cruise vacations offer virtually every service and amenity you'd expect from luxury accommodations. There are fully equipped fitness centers to keep you in shape, and spas to soothe your soul. Swimming pools are available for adults and kids, with plenty of deck chairs and benches on hand for stretching out and soaking up the sun. Entertainment is an important part of cruise vacations. State-of-the-art theaters are often provided for on-board film buffs, screening everything from Hollywood blockbusters to popular children's movies. If you want to shake up your evenings, several theme bars and discos are available with live music played into the wee hours of the morning. On board casinos with a selection of games provide all the fun and good fortune of Las Vegas. Everyone loves to shop while on vacation, and cruise ships fit the bill. Many have huge shopping concourses with interesting stores and shops. You can find personal items, clothing, souvenirs and just about everything you'll need while on board. When it's time to wind down, libraries and recreation centers can be found inside the cruise ship. Curl up with a book, or just relax in front of a television. Passengers looking for friendly conversation can catch up at any of the ship's 24-hour coffee shops. One of the most important elements in cruise vacations is food. Cruise lines hire the best chefs from continents across the world to provide delicious menus for all tastes. Food is cooked to perfection to ensure that your on-board dining experience is truly memorable. First-class dining rooms are available, and these do have dress codes--so plan on dressing up at least one night for some fine cuisine and top-notch service. When you prefer lighter fare, visit any of the many on-board snack bars, cafeterias, buffets or pizza parlors. These establishments are generally operated under extended hours, and are all included in your cruise price. Cruise itineraries include daily stops at ports along route. Check with your cruise line to see which ports-of-call you'll be stopping at. When the ship docks, you'll be given the option to join other passengers on a guided tour, stay on board the ship, or explore each port at your leisure. If you choose to freely explore the town, be sure to return to your ship before the scheduled departure time. A cruise vacation can be the dream getaway you really need. Call your travel agent or search online to learn about different cruise lines and vacation plans. You'll find out about destinations and cruise vacation packages that suit your interests and budget. Discounts and special offers are often available, so take the time to compare. Booking a cruise is simple. Enjoying it is even easier.

Looking For Vacation Ideas? The thought of vacationing is (typically) an exciting one! This world we live in has more places to vacation than one can even imagine and some places you many never think of could be just what the doctor ordered. First, consider what you and your family love to do. Relax on the beach? Ride a 120 foot high roller-coaster at 70 MPH? Hand-glide from the mountaintops? Kick back on the boat waiting for the fish to bite? Swim with sharks? Lounge on a “floatie”? Well, whether you like to relax or you are a dare-devil, there are hundreds of amazing places for all of these activities! Are you looking for the perfect beach? Raised in Florida, I understand great beaches… and all of them are different. If you are looking for the whitest sand, visit the panhandle of Florida around Destin, Seaside, Panama City or Ft. Walton Beach. If you want catch some waves, your best bet will be the east coast cities of Cocoa Beach or Daytona Beach. Looking for peace, quiet and a good cocktail, then the southwest coast cities of Naples or Ft. Myers might be in order. Want to party until the wee hours of the morning, then Miami or Ft. Lauderdale is the place to go…but I warn you, bring you shades because walking out of the bar at 6 am when the sun is shining can be a frightening experience! Finally, you just canʼt beat the Florida Keys if you want all of the above. And, if you are looking for amazing beaches outside of Florida, itʼs hard to go wrong with Southern California anywhere from San Diego all the way up to Malibu. However, letʼs not be shortsighted and think that all the best beaches in the world are you the U.S. If you have been to the Caribbean, you will see why visitors to all of these islands tend to go back at least every few years. Amazing views and lazy days, ethnic food and fun shopping experiences are what make up all of the “St.” islands, Jamaica and the Bahamas. I donʼt even have time to talk about the Mediterranean Sea and all of its locales. Looking for a deeper glimpse into history? You might want to visit the Greek Isles or Italy. Venice, Florence, Naples and Rome are steeped in history and amazing places to visit from today and from the Roman Empire 2000 years ago. The home of the 2004 summer Olympics, Athens has enough to keep you learning for a week, not to mention Corinth or Sparta. Are you an avid Skier? We all know how amazing, breathtaking and fun the Colorado Rockies can be for ski vacations. There are almost too many ski vacation areas to pick from with resorts, vacation home rentals, hotels, long trails, steep hills – you name it, they have it. Breckenridge. Keystone. Beaver Creek. Silverthorne. The list goes one. However, Colorado does not have the corner on the market for U.S. ski vacations. Utah, Idaho, Montana, Lake Tahoe all can be your dream skiing vacation! Want to travel just a few hours north via plane and you can visit Whistler. Just north of Vancouver in British Columbia, Whistler is home to some of the top rated ski resorts in all of North America. With resorts like Whistler/Blackcomb, you can explore 8,100 acres of skiable terrain on the two mountains, a huge 5,280 vertical drop, 12 high-speed quads, 3 gondolas and the most slope side lodging. Have you been to Africa lately? If you are like me, you probably haven't. It has been almost a decade since I last visited South Africa, but Kruger National Park is a site to see. A Safari during the day is fun and safe for the family. Youʼll get to see an incredible amount of animals in their natural, unhindered habitat. However, for those thrill seekers, get on an open Jeep at night for a ride around the park…if you see some eyeballs glowing in the dark though, hold on tight because there is something about seeing a lion at night from only about 100 yards away! I almost needed a new pair of pants! So, regardless of what you are looking for in a family vacation, planet Earth has it for you. It just takes a little planning and a little saving (sometimes a lot of saving) and you can go on the vacation of your dreams. Written by Kent Krueger. Article courtesy of Isnare.com.
Tips For Traveling With Kids: Airport Safety
More so in this modern age, the airport can be one of the most challenging parts of a journey. With all of the security issues and armed guards in the airport today, young children can very easily become frightened and anxious. However, there are ways to help your children remain calm and comfortable throughout their experience at the airport, and part of that process is making sure that you are able to pay closer attention to your children during your airport journey. In order to make sure that you can keep your attention focused on your children as you navigate airport security, you need to plan ahead so that everything you will need to present to airport security and the ticket desk, will be close-at-hand and easy-to-reach. From showing kids how to handle the screening process to helping pack their carry-on bags, you can look forward to a fun experience at the airport, when you have made the right preparations. Here are some simple ways to prepare for the airport when traveling with kids: 1. Arrive to the airport as early as possible. When you find yourself rushing to the airport or anywhere else, important items are frequently left behind. A decade ago, we could get through airport security, even if we left our driverʼs license at home. But these days, a missing driverʼs license could very well mean that you will not get into the airport, let alone get on your airplane. A document organizer can help you keep your identification and plane tickets all in one place. If you are traveling out of the country with your child(ren), donʼt forget their passports. Also if only one parent is traveling internationally, itʼs best to have a letter of permission from the other parent acknowledging that you are allowed to take the child(ren) out of the country. Plan to arrive at least two hours before your flight, so you can get your bags checked, have enough time to visit the restroom, get through security, and to be relaxed and comfortable as you board the airplane. 2. Locate restrooms close to your gate. You can almost always expect some last-minute trips to the restroom, especially with children in tow, so call the airport ahead of time to find out where restrooms are located in the area of the airport you plan on using. Planning your route – even at the airport terminal – will help you maximize your time, and avoid unnecessary delays. 3. Practice the airport screening process at home. Some kids may be alarmed or scared by the airport screening process, but you can help them become more comfortable by practicing at home. Just let them know what to expect, and walk them through the steps, so they are not overwhelmed at the last minute. Check your airlineʼs website for the latest security requirements. It will detail out what items can and cannot be taken on board as carryon luggage and what must be checked through to your destination.
Tips For Traveling
4. Keep snacks on hand. You may need to take a break during your airport travels, and you wonʼt want to waste time standing in line at the food court or concessions stands if youʼre on a tight schedule. Pack a few snacks that the kids will enjoy, but be prepared to discard them before entering the last gates for your flight, if necessary. 5. Help the kids pack their backpacks and carry-on luggage. You want to avoid last-minute delays at the X-ray machine as much as possible, so make sure your kids arenʼt sneaking in extra items at the last minute. Let them know that the bags will be checked with the X-ray machine as you enter the gates, and help them pack the bags carefully to comply with all security guidelines.
6. Point out the security officers when you arrive. Make sure your kids know who to ask, if they get lost. This is especially important for larger families traveling together; explain that security officers will be wearing a particular uniform, and standing by the gates and entryways at the airport. Your kids should be prepared to talk to a security officer if they drift away from your traveling group by mistake. 7. Make sure kids are dressed for traveling. Uncomfortable clothing can make it very difficult to travel without stress, so make sure everyone is wearing clothing that is comfortable and clothing that can be removed easily if necessary. Layers work best for traveling, especially when youʼre crossing climates and time zones. Pack at least one extra set of clothes with the carry-on luggage for very young kids, who may be at risk for spilling something or soiling their clothes.
8. Give older kids a map of the airport. If you are traveling with both young kids and teens, consider partnering everyone up and giving the oldest a map. This can help everyone navigate back to the right area, in case they get lost, and it will make it much easier to keep everyone on schedule. 9. Instruct kids not to talk to strangers. The airport is a crowded, busy place, so itʼs essential that kids practice safety first. Make sure they know not to talk to strangers or even other kids as you move around the airport, and keep them as close to you as possible. When youʼre traveling with young children, safety is always a top priority. Traveling with kids is a fun and exciting time for the whole family, but it does require some planning and organization to make sure everything runs smoothly. Preparing young children with what to expect, and how to handle emergencies is also a great way to help them build the skills they need for traveling safely; just plan ahead with any or all of these travel tips for a fun adventure the whole family can enjoy!

Maui Vacations Aren't What You Think
Some people have certain ideas about Hawaii; itʼs touristy, itʼs expensive, itʼs just plain tired…While itʼs true that many people visit the Aloha State, you have to see for yourself whether or not the stunning beaches, tantalizing trade winds, and unforgettable sunsets have been used up by all the people who have visited, or whether they are on such a level as to rise above the labels usually attributed to high-traffic destinations. Hereʼs a hint: if you do things right, you wonʼt be disappointed by your visit to Hawaii. One thing that would start you off on the right track would be to visit Maui. Yes, this island is a tourist hotspot, but there are plenty of hidden treasures and untrammeled portions of beach that will make you think twice before calling this place boring or predictable. With over 30 miles of sandy shoreline fit for swimming, surfing, and snorkeling, thereʼs bound to be a bit of beach for you to call your own. Join the crowds for a scuba dive or head off on your own for a snooze, either way you probably wonʼt find much reason to complain. Specifically, make note of Kaanapali Beach, which has been named one of the worldʼs tops, and D.T. Fleming Beach Park, another expertʼs favorite. Plenty more big names exist, but donʼt be shy about trekking off in search of someplace different, someplace that is literally off the beaten path. Rumor has it that these hidden gems do exist, but their supreme beauty will want you to follow the lead of so many others and keep their delights to yourself. See them, experience them, and then conveniently forget where they were. Until your next visit, that is. Maui beaches are also good for whale watching during the months of December through May, so get out the binoculars or, even better, charter a yacht to take you out towards the action. These massive mammals have a certain elegance that cannot be easily described, so hereʼs wishing you the best of luck in catching a glimpse of these exciting inhabitants of Mauiʼs waters.
If you arrive on the shores of this magical island feeling more than a little world-weary, make some time to properly pamper yourself at one of the high-class spas. After a facial or a massage youʼll be seeing things in a whole new way, a way that will include no memory of cubicles, computer crashes, or traffic jams. And, though it is definitely a popular thing to do, the golfing in Maui is so good that youʼll forgive yourself for being a cliché when you tee off on the most gorgeous course youʼve ever seen. Another attention worthy feature of the island is its 55 mile Hana Highway. Characterized by its crazy corkscrew twists and turns, this stretch of road is challenging yet rewarding. Park a careful driver behind the wheel, crack open the window for some fresh air, and gaze out the window as you navigate your way through one of the most beautiful drives youʼll ever experience. Make a few stops to fully appreciate the culture and the scenery, and congratulate yourself with a Mai Tai once you make it to the end. The list of unique, hardly-monotonous activities goes on and on, so hopefully you havenʼt yet written Maui off as the same old stuff. Sea kayaking, eco-tours, Polynesian shows, art galleries, and a goat dairy should all keep you busy for a few days without ever feeling that youʼre being herded around in a bland tour-like atmosphere. Maui invites you to explore the world at your own pace and with your own goals in mind, so pack a lunch and set out for a rainforest hike or lie back in a hammock, either way youʼre doing the right thing. To really do the right thing, avoid the standard step of booking a hotel. That doesnʼt mean you should set up a tent on the beach (although that would definitely be a way to do things differently), rather, consider reserving a vacation rental. A funky, one-of-a-kind property will suit your taste to rebel against the norm, and the privacy that goes along with your beach side villa will satisfy your need for escape. If youʼre willing to give it a try, Maui will be the kind of vacation that breeds little complaint, besides the fact that it will have been far too short. Reserve a flight, pick out a winner from the array of Maui Vacation Rentals available online, and then prepare to forget every stereotype youʼve been foolish enough to believe about Hawaii. Youʼll have plenty of time to form your own opinions once youʼve slipped off your shoes and taken a deep breath of fresh Maui air.

Share The Knowledge School Supplies and Clothing For Back to School Season
This is the time of year for buying school supplies, rearranging schedules and everything else that goes along with getting back to school. Many children are anxiously awaiting their first day of school. Some of them are dreading it with every fiber of their being because they will not have new school clothes and school supplies are not affordable for them. When you are at the school supply store, give some thought to those who do not have the ability to buy clothes, books, folders and backpacks. There are many families who are struggling just to feed their children. Buying school supplies is difficult and sometimes an impossibility. Teachers often have to purchase classroom supplies on their own. Not every school is able to provide enough to satisfy the needs. If you can help students and teachers in any way, you will find there really are benefits to giving. Following are a few different ways you can contribute. • Look through your children's closets for clothes that no longer fit them. Donate these items to a family you know that needs them. Local churches are great places for finding out which families in the neighborhood could use some of this kind of assistance or you can take the clothes to your local charity. If your children wear uniforms, donate them back to the school. • When you are shopping for shoes, take advantage of the “Buy one pair, get the second for half-price” offers. Donate the shoes to charity or ask teachers to give them to students who need them. • School supplies are discounted this time of year. Spend a few extra dollars to get some pencils, paper and notebooks for kids who will show up to school without them. Start a neighborhood school supply drive to encourage others to give as well. Most teachers will be happy to hand these out to children who need them. Throughout the school year, ask the teacher to let you know about students who need supplies for school. Encourage friends and family members to do the same thing for their childrenʼs classrooms. • Give of your time by volunteering to tutor a child once or twice a week. The time you spend with a child who needs some extra help will be remembered and appreciated. You can make a difference in the life of a child who might otherwise find themselves falling behind. • If you are able, volunteer some time to be a classroom helper. It can be very hard for a teacher to help every child who needs it, especially when they have 30 or more students to teach. You can help in other ways as well. Organize the class party, make copies for the teacher, be a guiding hand when students get unruly… The ways your presence in the classroom can help are limitless. • Establish a carpool program in your neighborhood. Rising gas prices and tight schedules take their toll. A community carpool can take the edge off and give parents -- including you-- a break. • If your children ride the school bus, offer to spend a day or two a week on the bus. You can help the bus driver by quieting loud and active children. Engage the kids in songs and stories. This keeps them occupied and gives the bus driver the ability to pay attention to the road without having to worry about what is going on behind them. When people think of students dreading the upcoming school year, they usually laugh it off because many times, the dread is all about having to do homework and “wasting time” in the classroom when they would rather be playing. But many kids are dreading school because they canʼt afford the clothes and supplies they need or they are struggling with a subject and anxiety overtakes them. If you can help by donating time, school supplies or money, you will find that making others happy in this way makes you a happier person, too. Written by Seomul Evans. Courtesy of Isnare.com. Back To School
Checklist
Many American children are starting back to school soon, and no matter how young or old they may be: There is always a long list of items that must be purchased in preparation. This list is an overview of the basic stuff most kids need - whether they're starting kindergarten or college. 1. Backpacks and bags: Attending school usually involves keeping track of books, papers, pens and more. So carrying bags are a must. Younger children prefer backpacks, and many cute ones are available just about anywhere these days. If your children are a bit older - particularly in junior high or high school - be sure to get rugged, durable backpacks that will last. These older kids carry very heavy loads sometimes, and it helps to spend a little extra money for backpacks right at the beginning of the year. I've found that hiking backpacks work best for high school students, because they have large carrying capacities and they're quite strong and durable. Buying these types of backpacks will ensure they last through the entire school season, instead of having to be replaced halfway through the year. College bound students might prefer laptop and gadget bags, sling bags, messenger or duffle bags instead. 2. Paper Supplies: This includes notebook paper, spiral notebooks, pocket folders and binders among other things. Most kids need all of these from the time they start first or second grade, though the needs get heavier as the children get older. Younger children might need art paper and older children might need graph paper, so the needs vary slightly but the basics tend to stay the same. High School honor students and college bound students will also need special books, and these usually need to be purchased. Book covers are also useful for all grades. 3. Writing Tools: Pens and pencils are generally thought of automatically, but often there are other writing related materials that must be purchased for school as well. Younger children often need crayons and paint for instance, while older kids may need markers and colored pencils. As children move into junior high, high school and college, they'll require a larger variety of the basics too. Instead of just blue pens for instance, they often need blue, black and red. It's good to know the teachers at this point by the way: Some do not allow gel pens to be used for instance, while others may forbid red pens or yellow markers. 4. Misc. Tools: These change from one grade to another, but generally additional tools of some kind are needed for just about any age range. Examples of school tools needed includes rulers, protractors, and calculators. 5. Clothing: This is usually a given, but a checklist always helps. Be sure to buy pants, shirts, socks, and underclothing. Don't forget to get new shoes... some kids need more than one pair because specialized shoes are needed for gym or athletic programs. Also be sure to buy athletic or gym cloths if they're required. These could include shorts, t-shirts, or sweat suits. Sweaters and lightweight jackets are usually needed for the cool early mornings, and heavier coats will be needed within a few months of school starting. Most schools have dress codes these days too, so it's a good idea to get a copy of that for reference before you go clothes shopping. You wouldn't want your daughter to have a whole new wardrobe of tank tops only to find out they're not allowed to be worn at school for instance. Written by Kathy Burns-Millyard. Random Facts
This month's random fact may come as a shock to many people. There is a rainforest in North America! Sorry guys, South America does not have the only ones, not by a long shot. Washington state has the only temperate rainforest on the North American continent and one of the few in the world. It is also one of the largest.
Washington's Olympic National Park, specifically the Olympic Peninsula is home to the Hoh Rainforest. With giant trees, beaches of both sand and rock, huge monoliths, beautiful board walks and even an island that is a scared burial place for local native american tribes it is everything that one could dream up in a rainforest and so very much more.
So the next time you see someone crusading to save the Brazilian rainforest, you might enlighten them. American rainforests need saving too! Most people just don't know it is there.
