Karols Korner I hate to be the sensible one!! While we are all basking in this glorious sunshine, please remember sun screen and dogs in hot cars. Is it really the best thing to take your dog out with you in the heat, and definitely DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A CAR, in this weather, as the temperature inside a car heats up very quickly, resulting in heat stroke and distress to your dog. Pretty soon we will all be enjoying all the outdoor events of the summer and keep a look out for our Bumper summer Guide in our next issue for all the best places to be and things to do for the whole family! I have been out and about with Wally and Scarlet, and took a lovely picture of Wally at a show, hope you like it! Have a wonderful June!

HERE COMES SUMMER: TECH FOR OUTDOOR LIVING It’s amazing to think that we were still getting snow back in March: just weeks later and it’s June, which even the UK usually manages to get through without any blizzards. Who knows, we might even get a long hot summer this time – and if we do, technology is happy to help. 1 If you’re planning to party on the summer equinox, the longest day of the year, it’s worth getting some long-lasting gadgets such as the UE Boom 2 portable speaker. It’s loud but not too loud, portable but not too small, and it’s waterproof because it’s sold in Britain. At around £93 it’s pricier than many but is solid, sounds great and is well made – plus the battery lasts for 15 hours of tunes from a single charge. It’s a really great speaker for 2 outdoor entertaining.

The catch, inevitably, is cost: the wall-mountable Lily spotlight is about £260 and the pedestal lamp around £125. It might be worth waiting for rivals to follow Philips’ lead: Hue-style indoor bulbs are widely available for a lot less than Philips chargers and we’d expect the same to happen with outdoor lighting too. Don’t try and cut corners with normal Hue EXOEV LQ VWDQGDUG ODPS ÀWWLQJV XQOHVV WKRVH ÀWWLQJV DUH ODUJH DQG SURSHUO\ waterproof. They might not work anyway: your home’s exterior walls may block the connection between the lights and the Hue hub, which has to be connected to your internet router.

LEO
March 21st - April 20th
24th - August 23rd
The New Moon on the 13th invites you to make a sales pitch, begin a social media campaign or start a writing project. It's possible you'll leave one job for another on the 28th, when the Full Moon marks a turning point in your career. Accepting a position with heavy responsibilities will work well for you.
A cutting-edge collaboration will be more challenging than expected on the 13th, due to a tense New Moon. There won't be enough money in the budget to do this project justice. As a result, the team will start squabbling. The Full Moon on the 28th prompts you to reconsider how you are using your time, money and energy.
TAURUS
VIRGO
April 21st - May 21st
August 24th - Sept 23rd
A fresh moneymaking opportunity will arrive on the 13th, courtesy of the New Moon. You will enjoy the work involved, but your colleagues will be less than impressive. The Full Moon on the 28th will find you collecting a degree or certificate. Alternatively, you could have a piece of written work published. You've been working hard to acquire expert knowledge.
A career opportunity on the 13th isn't all that it is cracked up to be. The New Moon is urging you to make a job change, but there will be hidden elements to this job that are very unpleasant. On the 28th, the Full Moon will mark a turning point in a romance or creative project. You might decide this relationship or venture is just too much trouble.
SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st On the 13th, the New Moon will tempt you to enter into a business or romantic relationship. Don't jump into anything too quickly. Your feelings are muddled and with good reason. The Full Moon on the 28th brings a nice little boost to your bank balance, but you'll have to spend it on some expensive necessities.
CAPRICORN December 22nd - Jan 20th Starting work on a project will be cause for alarm in mid-June. Someone who isn't clear how this work will be performed will give conflicting instructions on the 13th, due to a deceptive New Moon. The Full Moon on the 28th will invite you to do something special for yourself. Enjoy a spa treatment, holiday or afternoon nap.

AQUARIUS
May 22nd - June 21st
September 24th - Oct 23rd
January 21st - Feb 19th
You're ready to make a fresh start, but don't make any changes that will compromise your professional prospects. Getting a radical hairstyle or adopting a fashionable look could put you out of the running for an impressive job. On the 28th, your deepest feelings will come out in the open. It will no longer be possible to hide your passion, anger or resentment.
An opportunity to travel, publish or teach will arrive on or around the 13th, thanks to an adventurous New Moon. There will be strings attached to this opportunity, so beware. The Full Moon on the 28th creates drama on the family front. A stern relative may discourage your plans to become more independent.
The New Moon on the 13th opens the door to a passionate relationship. Beware of trying to buy someone's affection. On the 28th, you will be challenged to let go of an old grudge. This doesn't mean you have to forgive someone who performed a terrible injustice. It does mean you must train yourself to release your anger and resentment.
CANCER
SCORPIO
PISCES
June 22nd - July 23rd
October 24th - Nov 22nd
Feb 20th - March 20th
On the 13th, you'll feel the urge to rest, relax and recuperate from a busy social season. Before you get too comfortable, you will have to attend to a legal or business matter. Giving a court deposition or going on an overseas trip for work will keep you busy towards the middle of June. The Full Moon on the 28th brings a partnership or contract to completion.
An investment opportunity arriving at mid-June is too good to be true. The New Moon will tempt you to back this exciting venture on the 13th, but all is not what it seems. On the 28th, the Full Moon will prompt you to say what you see. Confront someone who is taking advantage of their position. You're the only one brave enough to challenge their abusive behaviour.
Finding a place to live will be more challenging than expected. The New Moon on the 13th invites you to lower your expectations about living spaces. The Full Moon on the 28th could cause you to break away from a group that no longer meets your needs. An influential member will be personally insulted by this defection, but it can't be helped.

How Much Money Will You Need For Your Retirement? tax and house insurance. Then you can factor in the cost of emergency repairs such as boiler or car breakdowns. The total is the sum you’ll need to cover using a guaranteed income.
There’s a general consensus in the press that, to live comfortably in retirement, you need a pension of at least £20,000 a year. Where you live obviously makes a difference to the costs, but in general, people’s idea of what constitutes a ‘comfortable’ retirement also differs.
After this, consider the items that aren’t essential, but that you wouldn’t necessarily want to live without – a TV package, for example, or high speed broadband. Lastly, factor in the activities that would be nice to enjoy, such as eating out regularly or going to the theatre.
So, if like many people you’re unsure how much you’ll need in retirement, how can you find out? The first step is to look at your essential expenditure such as mortgage or rent payments, food and heating, and only then think about the ‘nice to have’ aspects of daily life that do make it more comfortable.
Pension forecasts and statements Once you’ve calculated your expenditure, you can obtain a state pension forecast from the gov.uk website. Work and personal pension statements should be available by phone or in writing from your pension provider(s), and there are also a number of online ‘pension calculators’ that give you an idea of how much you might receive.
Focus on your expenditure initially Rather than obtaining pension statements and forecasts first, it’s a good idea to calculate how much you’ll need for the essentials in retirement, taking into account what your circumstances might be in the future rather than now. If you pay your bills by direct debit, have a look at your bank statements for regular household outgoings such as mortgage, utilities, council 10
Don’t forget any benefits that you could be eligible for in retirement – pension credit, for example. If you have savings or investments, you can also include these in your income projections. What expenses will you save in retirement? • If you’re currently supporting your family or making
mortgage repayments, these expenses may not be relevant once you retire. Not having to commute to work is also a significant cost saving for some. • Many people choose to downsize their property in retirement – if this is on the cards for you, it would release a lump sum of cash to pay off any debts you have remaining, invest for an income, or to pay future house maintenance costs, for example. • Downsizing might also naturally free up money on a monthly basis, thanks to the reduced heating bills and maintenance issues of a smaller property. So now you’ve got all the figures you need, how do you access your pension pot when the time comes? Pension freedoms The pension reforms that were introduced in April 2015 give you much greater choice in the way you access your pension pot. Prior to this, an annuity had to be purchased which provided a guaranteed income for life. Although this option remains available and is commonly used, it’s no longer the only one. With professional pension advice, you can maximise your pension savings whilst also ensuring you avoid the significant pension pitfalls that now exist. Pension mistakes that could jeopardise your retirement Do you have enough ‘qualifying

You can check for any gaps in your National Insurance record by requesting the state pension forecast mentioned earlier, available via the gov.uk website. Could you outlive your pension savings? Helping Your Dog Deal with the Heat of Summer
Heat stroke is a serious risk for dogs in the summer because they can’t lose heat through their skin as we do. Even on a warm day, if they can’t seek out shade or water to cool down, they can suffer irreparable organ damage, which is often fatal.
PETS
Is your dog suffering from heat stroke? Signs and symptoms of heat stroke include:
• You don’t over-exercise them, or take your dog out during the hottest part of the day.

What to do if you suspect your dog has heat stroke You need to cool your dog down, but without making them too cold once the panting has stopped. How Gardens Have Changed! Watching my grandsons play in the garden, I realised how different it is from the garden I used to romp around in sixty years ago. Our south-west London estate had relatively huge gardens, if it had been built today it would have had twice the houses and smaller gardens. My parents’ youths were engulfed by WW2, rationing and “dig for victory”, so twothirds of our garden was for growing food. The veg patch with its rows of potatoes, beans, cabbages and salad plants with rhubarb crowns, gooseberries and blackcurrants was bordered by apple trees with only a few traditional flowers like chrysanthemums, roses and nasturtiums. As children, we assisted and adopted patches to grow our own contributions. In retirement dad had a greenhouse for tomatoes which were stored with bananas in brown paper bags to ripen if it was a poor summer! One-year, mum made vats of green tomato chutney rather than waste a crop so late even bags and bananas couldn’t save it. Dad built us a large sand-pit to play in and the almond tree in the front lawn was the goalpost in many neighbourhood football games. Not everyone had such practical gardens but most had vegetable beds and very few had gardens geared towards leisure. Weekends saw most people working in their gardens and there was sometimes extra pocket money for helpers. 14
Today, gardens seem smaller and supermarkets provide a wide range of cheap produce that wouldn’t thrive in British gardens. I don’t know anyone on our estate who grows food (beyond pots of herbs), most gardens are geared towards low maintenance and leisure time – paved, gravelled or decked with small flower beds. Patios, barbeque areas and parasols dominate in gardens that are for relaxing and entertaining not growing. Whilst occasionally nostalgic for the garden where dad us
to build cane tepees for runner beans and for his rhubarb which we split and planted in every home I lived in until I was in my 50’s. My garden has also been turned over to leisure and low maintenance, a small patio and lawn, flower borders and low maintenance fences in place of hedges. We spend sunny days relaxing or mowing the lawn but it’s mainly the grand-children and the birds who use the garden now and in honesty we prefer it that way – it allows for hobbies and leisure activities that my parents would never have found time for.

Fourteen Schools join SWRA Primary Maths Challenge
Sir William Robertson Academy was delighted to welcome 56 Year 5 and 6 pupils from fourteen primary schools from Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire to their annual Primary Maths Challenge on Thursday 22nd March. In its third year, the Maths Challenge was the biggest one to date with all the pupils doing amazingly well. Congratulations to Navenby Primary School who were declared overall winners with 171 points closely followed by Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Primary School, Sleaford in second place with 160 points and Rauceby Church of England Primary in third place with just one point behind on 159 points! Other primary schools taking part in the Challenge included: Coddington, Claypole, Witham St Hughs, Cranwell, Bassingham, Brant Broughton, Winthorpe, St Botolph’s – Sleaford, Waddington All Saints, Ancaster and The Mount Church of England School, Newark. The Maths Challenge was organised by Mr Scott Henshaw, Lead Practitioner in Maths and Miss Lauren White, Maths Teacher. Relay round. The teams of four were made up of Year 5 and 6 pupils. All participants were presented with certificates, goody bags
and the winning Navenby team received trophies. Mr Henshaw, SWRA’s Lead Practitioner of Maths who organised the Challenge commented: “We were delighted to see even more local schools taking part in our third annual Maths Challenge. All the pupils did a superb job and were a real credit to their schools. The day’s activities included rounds in Logic, Cross Number, a Group round and a Relay round. The teams of four were made up of Year 5 and 6 pupils and the idea of the Challenge is to expose them to the kind of Maths they will soon be studying at secondary school but in a fun environment.” Sir William Robertson is quite unique with its safe, rural location between the villages of Welbourn and Leadenham in Lincolnshire but easily accessible from Lincoln, Grantham, Sleaford, Newark, Lincoln and surrounding villages – with school buses serving each of these areas. The school looks forward to welcoming Year 4 and 5 primary school pupils to its Summer Opening Evening on Tuesday 26th June 6.00pm – 8.30pm or its Open Week 17th19th September with another Open Evening on Wednesday 19th September.

Health Screenings: What’s Available?
Screening programmes are designed to identify health problems at an early stage so that they can be treated swiftly, before they become more serious. The NHS offer a number of free screening programmes, beginning before we are even born. SCREENINGS DURING PREGNANCY If you are pregnant, you will usually be offered a blood test to screen for hepatitis B, HIV and syphilis at your booking appointment with the midwife. Ideally, this test is done before you’re 10 weeks pregnant so that any infection can be treated quickly, reducing the likelihood of it passing to your baby.
During your pregnancy, you will also be offered screenings for your unborn baby. 26
SCREENINGS FOR NEWBORNS New-born babies are given a physical examination and also: • A hearing test before 3 months of age. • A blood spot ’heel prick’ test to check for sickle cell DQDHPLD F\VWLF Ă€EURVLV congenital hypothyroidism and several inherited metabolic diseases, including phenylketonuria (PKU). Life Begins What’s wrong with a little rose-tinted nostalgia? young adults, our strongest imprints develop around new experiences – that’s why, years later, we can recall exactly where we were, and who was with us, ZKHQ ZH ÀUVW WULHG something new. “When I was young ...”; “In my time …”; “The good old days …” Be honest. How often do you use expressions like this to talk about the past? Of course, there’s no harm in a little nostalgia; thinking back to the experiences we’ve enjoyed in our lives helps us hold on to our identities in this fast-changing world. But some would argue WKDW FRQVWDQWO\ UHÁHFWLQJ RQ WKH past makes it harder for us to appreciate the present or look forward to the future. Self-deception or rosy retrospection? The French novelist and critic Marcel Proust wrote: “Remembrance of things past is not necessarily the remembrance of things as they were.” In order to fully enjoy our nostalgic memories, psychiatrists have found that our minds tend to blank out any details that might spoil the picture. This behaviour – known as ‘rosy retrospection’ – allows people to remember events in a positive light, even though they may have been less than happy at the time. In one study of this phenomenon, researchers found that a group of Disneyland visitors who complained about their experience on the day of their trip recalled it as a great experience when they were quizzed several weeks later. While there’s clearly an element of self-deception at play when it comes to reliving past memories, research suggests that nostalgic thoughts can actually be good for you. Colourful containers are a welcome sight in any garden, and pots, planters and troughs can transform a dull back yard or a gloomy terrace or patio. But rather than just using containers from the garden centre, why not make some wackier, more unusual planters? With a little bit of imagination and ingenuity, it is amazing what you can achieve.

Acrylic paints are a great way to colour a boring or discoloured container, and they’re quick drying too. Go for a single colour to match in with existing garden features, or even the colour of your front door or window frames. Alternatively, create a pattern of wild, fantastic colours and make your own planted-up art gallery. Get creative with some mosaic tiles from your local craft or hobby store. Covering a container may take a while, but it’ll be a lot of fun and if time is short

Fill the foot and ankle area with gravel or grit for drainage and to make the wellie more stable and less likely to fall over, add compost and plant up the top. You can also use acrylic paints to jazz up a boring pair of wellies, but make sure the paint is totally dry before you start planting. Don’t bin your old gardening, walking or work boots as they have planting potential too, and because they tend to have heavier soles and are lower to the ground they can even make useful

An old kitchen or bathroom sink can be put to good use, but don’t forget to pull the plug out before you add the compost or else you’ll end up with no drainage and the plants will quickly become waterlogged and die – but then again, if you leave the plug in place and add some sealant to ensure that it is ÀUPO\ LQ SODFH \RX FRXOG always make a miniature water garden.
For a serious show-stopper, I’ve even seen a loo cistern packed full of trailing plants including blue and white lobelia and trailing silvery foliage plants. History
How We Fell in Love with Perfume cinnamon, cassia and sweet cane, and the ancient Egyptians believed perfume was ‘the sweat of the gods’.
The word perfume is derived from the Latin per fumum, meaning ‘through smoke’. This is possibly because the perfumes of ancient civilisations were often incense-based. Today, true perfumes are a distillation of a certain percentage of oils in alcohol, with eau de toilette and eau de cologne being diluted versions. Although the Romans were well-known to be very fastidious in their toilet habits, perfume very much pre-dates them. 8VHG VLJQLĂ€FDQWO\ DFURVV $VLDQ cultures, it is believed perfume may have originated in Arabia – still sometimes described as ‘the land of perfumes’. The perfume formulas of a female Mesopotamian chemist known as Tapputi-Bellatekalim have been translated from a threethousand-year-old tablet written in ancient cuneiform script. In the ancient world, perfumes were much more than just pleasant smells – they were also revered. The Bible refers to a sacred perfume, only allowed to be used by priests, that was made from myrrh, 54
Ancient Hindu Ayurvedic texts dating back to 3000 BC refer to perfume’s distillation. In India, a variety of fragrances were used in tantric rituals where women would be spiritually anointed with different oils for every part of their body. In 2004, the oldest evidence of perfume was discovered with the remains of a Bronze Age perfume ‘factory’ unearthed in Cyprus. It is thought that 13th century Crusaders brought back perfume from Palestine, and its use was eagerly taken up by Europe’s nobility. The Sun King Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643-1715, loved perfume so much that his palace became known as ‘the perfume court’. One of his favourite perfumes, used to fragrance his shirts, was called Aqua Angeli (‘water of angels’) and consisted of, amongst other ingredients, nutmeg, cloves, jasmine, RUDQJH Ă RZHUV PXVN DQG DORH wood, all boiled in rose petal water. was a leading supplier. In England, where sanitation was also abysmal and disease rife, perfumes were not only worn; they were also kept inside jewellery and the heads of canes to be inhaled by the wearer for health-giving properties and to ward off illness. As well as essential oils from Ă RZHUV DQG SODQWV LQJUHGLHQWV for perfume were also derived from animal excretions. Castor was extracted from beavers, musk from male deer and ambergris from the sperm whale. In the 1800s, synthetic fragrances made an appearance, their less expensive ingredients allowing IRU WKH Ă€UVW PDVV PDUNHWLQJ of perfumes, thus launching famous companies that are still around today such as Coty and *XHUODLQ Then in 1921, Chanel created her signature scent, Chanel 1R ZLWK WKH KHOS RI *UDVVH parfumier Ernest Beaux who had made perfumes for the Russian royal family. Under her direction, he gave her numbered samples to choose from – the rest is history. Today our love of perfume remains undiminished and fragrances are popular with both men and women. But one thing hasn’t changed in that, even used daily, perfume is still viewed as a gloriously indulgent and luxury item – pure olfactory pleasure in a bottle.

10 Electric Vehicle Myths Busted by James Baggot
7KH DJH RI WKH HOHFWULF FDU LV very much upon us. However, with cutting-edge technology packed into each vehicle, it can be tricky to understand how they work and what the EHQHÀWV RI RZQLQJ RQH DUH Here, we try and debunk some of the key myths surrounding electric cars. 1. You can’t boil the kettle while charging an electric car A National Grid report warned last year that home networks might struggle to cope with high-capacity car charging. While this is theoretically true, EV owners with a low-capacity home network wouldn’t have a high-capacity charger, meaning that there’s little chance of the network being overloaded. 2. EVs are more expensive than petrol and diesel cars While it’s generally true that the base price of an EV will be a bit more expensive, manufacturers make up for this by offering a generous VSHFLÀFDWLRQ VR WKDW RQFH 58
you’ve taken the government’s ÂŁ4,500 zero-emission vehicle grant into account, they’re actually a pretty good deal, and that’s before you even look at the low running costs. What’s more, as EV technology becomes more prevalent, R&D costs will be more evenly spread across PDQXIDFWXUHU Ă HHWV VR WKH cost of EVs will come down – the new Nissan Leaf starts at ÂŁ1,500 less than the old one. 3. They’re more likely to FDWFK Ă€UH LQ D FUDVK 0DQ\ SHRSOH KDYH FRQFHUQV about crash safety with electric cars. And if you couldn’t even wash your car there would be a lot more dirty EVs on the road than there are! 5. You can’t go very far 7KDW PD\ KDYH EHHQ WKH FDVH a few years ago, but now most electric vehicles have a range in excess of 150 miles, with 200 miles quickly becoming the norm. With the average journey less than nine miles, that’s more than enough for most trips. 6. There’s nowhere to charge them Fear of running out of electricity is known as ‘range anxiety’. Long trips do require a bit more planning as you can’t rely on charging points cropping up as regularly as

fuel stations, but charge point ORFDWRU =DS 0DS LQGLFDWHV there are almost 15,000 connectors at more than 5,000 locations in the UK, with more added all the time. And charging doesn’t take as long as you might think, either. Rapid chargers can provide 80 per cent of charge in about 30 minutes.
It’s true that the high energy required to build an electric car can make it less environmentally friendly to produce than a traditionally fuelled car. However, once on the road, a Norwegian study quoted by the BBC estimates an EV is about 10 per cent better over its life cycle – and as the UK turns more towards eco-friendly energy production for the grid, that’ll continue to improve. 9. Iconic Routes: The North Coast 500 Italy has the St Bernard Pass (made famous in the opening scene of ‘The Italian Job’). America has Route 66 of course. And Scotland? Well, that has the North Coast 500. Winding for 16 miles over the 500 that gives the route its name, it was the 2015 brainchild of the North Highland Initiative to create a tourist driving loop around the uppermost part of mainland Scotland. And it’s on my bucket list to drive this year. Driven clockwise, or anti, the accepted start/endpoint is Inverness, a beautiful city and worth exploring before the drive. From there you take the A862 to Mull of Ord, before choosing clockwise and westward on the A832 to Applecross, or taking the A9 northbound to John O‘Groats if you prefer the
opposite way. Either way, you will travel through some of the most stunning scenery the UK has to offer: in the southern section, looping roads with near-vertical PRXQWDLQV RQ HLWKHU VLGH DQG VXUSULVLQJO\ Ă DW almost East-Anglian pasture-like highways in the north around Thurso. And the beaches up there are something to behold too. How long it takes is up to you (cyclists have ridden it in 31 hours!) but speed is not the point: it’s the journey that matters. Just writing about it makes me want to jump in the car and drive the ‘500 right now! The only detrimental thing I can see is its increasing popularity. We go to the Highlands to get away from it all, yet it could be a victim of its own success and turn into Scotland’s M25. So, let’s keep its secret to ourselves, eh? www.visitscotland.com/see-do/tours/driving-roadtrips/north-coast-500/ By Iain Betson
