The nights may be getting longer as Winter approaches but there’s still enough daylight hours to get out and about exploring. October in our region means misty mornings, grey clouds, and crisp afternoons, not to mention the wonderful sight of parks, woodlands and tree-lined streets enveloped in fiery red and orange foliage. We for one shall be making the most of it before we need to retreat inside and into our layers of clothing.
October is best known for its Halloween festivities and half term, but it's also a month loaded with national and global celebrations. In addition to Vegetarian Awareness Month and Black History Month, October's schedule includes days to celebrate science and technology, health and fitness, art, culture and architecture, and the natural world. You can see a full list at Project Britain (projectbritain.com/specialdays).
Just before we sign off, here’s a reminder that the clocks go back on Sunday 30th October – who else is looking forward to an extra hour in bed?
Until next time,

Her Majesty The Queen
1926 - 2022
Like the whole of the UK and many people around the world, the UseLocally team were extremely saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 8th September. For all of us here she was a constant and steadfast presence in our lives, and the one person we could rely on to hold true to her values as the world around us underwent epoch-defining Althoughchanges.
she lived to a remarkably great age of 96, she had understandably become a more private person after the death of her husband Prince Philip in 2021. Nevertheless, she was still there at the most important moments, despite her increasing mobility problems, and who can forget the wonderful four-day celebration of her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year in June?
The Queen notched up some remarkable achievements during her 70-year reign. In pure numbers alone they would have required immense stamina, focus and fortitude. Since 1952 she travelled to more than 100 countries and made more than 150 visits to Commonwealth countries including 82 state visits. She worked with all 15 UK Prime Ministers, met 13 US Presidents and 7 Popes. She attended 21,000 public engagements, including 39 Royal Variety Performances, posed for 1,000 official photographic and painted portraits, sent 300,000 birthday messages to centenarians, vetted over 1,000 new laws, and owned 30 Thosecorgis.closest
to her often talked about her wicked sense of humour, which became apparent to the rest of us during some big national moments. The 2012 Olympics opening ceremony featured a skit in which she accompanied Daniel Craig as James Bond from the palace to the Olympic Stadium; her own idea, which she had kept secret from the rest of her family. This year, her Platinum Jubilee celebrations included her playing herself in a short video with a CGI version of Paddington Bear, bonding over a shared love of marmalade sandwiches – finally revealing the secret of what she’d been keeping in her handbag for all those years!
And let us not forget she was also a mother and grandmother, a matriarch as well as a monarch. She was married to Prince Philip for 73 years, had four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. For them as well as us, she was a symbol of stability, resilience, and wisdom. During times of national strife, she provided comfort and reassurance. It’s difficult to summarise her legacy in just a few words, other than to say that we’re grateful for her grace, humour, and tireless support in helping Britain navigate its way through the 20th century and onto the 21st. She was an extraordinary figure, and we feel proud and very, very lucky to have had her in our lives for as long as we did.
Rest in Peace, Your Majesty.

As I address the nation, From here, beyond the sky, I know you cannot hear me, I'm here, I see you cry.
But do not weep my children, Be brave and dry those tears, Now it is my time to rest, Having reigned for 70 years.
My duties are complete now, I've seen my final dawn, My family surrounds me, My country starts to mourn.
And now join my Phillip, Together hand in hand, A picnic in the clouds, As leave behind this land.
Farewell my dearest people, I leave with no regret, Thank you, for everything, Your Queen, your Lilibet.
(Haydee Waldron Jones-
Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022
Phillip came to me today, and said it was time to go. I looked at him and smiled, as i whispered that "I know"
I then turned and looked behind me, and seen I was asleep. All my Family were around me, and I could hear them weep.
I gently touched each shoulder, with Phillip by my side. Then I turned away and walked, with My Angel guide.
Phillip held my hand, as he lead the way, to a world where King's and Queens, are Monarch's every day.
I was given a crown to wear or a Halo known by some. The difference is up here, they are worn by everyone.
I felt a sense of peace, my reign had seen its end. 70 years I had served my Country, as the peoples friend.
Thank you for the years, for all your time and love. Now I am one of two again, in our Palace up author)
Don’t be frightened Ma’am... the world will be holding your hand

The Longest Legacy
From the 15 Prime Ministers she swore in, to the modernisation of the Royal Family and the styling of a public perception that ensures we remain committed to the pomp and pageantry of the House of Windsor, Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy is impeccable and elegant. We reflect on some cherished moments along the way.
The Heir Apparent Born in April 1926, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was third in line to the throne behind her uncle, Edward, Prince of Wales, and her father, Albert, Duke of York. However, her ascension was accelerated when, in 1936, following the death of King George V, her uncle relinquished the crown so he could marry the American divorcee, Wallis NowSimpson.heir
apparent, during the war she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, learning how to drive and maintain vehicles; and on her first oversees visit, to South Africa in 1947, gave a speech dedicating herself to the Commonwealth – a promise Her Majesty kept to the very end.
By the time of her beloved father’s death in 1952, Princess Elizabeth had become a wife, to Prince Philip, and mother to Prince Charles and Princess
Anne. Yet on undertaking the crown aged in her midtwenties, she was acutely aware of how monumental the task was that lay ahead of her.
In her prime Queen Elizabeth II made a truly modern Head of State. Her Coronation at Westminster Abbey was the first to be televised, and on her gruelling first tour of the Commonwealth, alongside Prince Philip, she made every effort to win over the hearts and minds of all those she encountered.
Naturally, over the decades there was much political and social tumult. Her Majesty’s reign saw 15 Prime Ministers come and go, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss.
There too was drama from within her family. In 1955 it became necessary to intervene in her sister Margaret’s planned nuptials to Peter Townsend; though the most significant
upset during her reign was surely the dissolvement of Charles and Diana’s marriage, and the Princess of Wales’ untimely death in a car crash aged 36.
Among the stars
In her twilight years, the Queen cemented her legacy through continued work and devotion, travelling extensively and hosting countless high-profile and sometimes controversial guests and Heads of State, including Mugabe, Mandela and Trump.
The final two decades of Queen Elizabeth’s life and reign undoubtedly brought both joy and sadness in equal measures - the weddings of six of her grandchildren and the birth of 12 great-grandchildren, yet also the deaths of her beloved mother and sister Margaret and the passing of the king of her heart, Prince Philip.

Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries to take occupancy of the upper floor of the Buttermarket
Transformative work on the Buttermarket in Newark town centre is nearing completion as part of Newark and Sherwood District Council's commitment to transform the building into a space suitable for the town.
Following the
and adults of Newark."
Ian Bond, Director of Learning from Inspire said: “We are incredibly excited to have been offered the opportunity by Newark and Sherwood District Council to bring a brand-new centre to the Buttermarket in Newark, offering inspiring courses, workshops, events and more! We hope to create a lively hub for learning, creativity and exploration and become a valued venue for educational and cultural activities in the heart of Newark town centre.”
In addition to the works taking place to the upper floor of the Buttermarket, Newark and Sherwood District Council is exploring the option of coworking spaces in the atrium space to create a safe, flexible, shared environment for
communities in Newark. Furthermore, the ground floor of the Buttermarket can boast 100% occupancy with a mix of national chains, independent shops and a popular restaurant. Councillor Rhona Holloway continued: "Newark and Sherwood District Council is committed to the continued support of local retailers to boost the local economy, as evidenced by the works undertaken at the Buttermarket. We, along with our partners, have transformed the Buttermarket, a building continuously identified as an important feature to the people of Newark, into a space suitable for the town and can be utilised accordingly. I'm looking forward to watching the continued success of the Buttermarket."

A Day in the Life of a Rambler
Peering out through the curtains, light streams in. It's going to be a bright, fresh day, perfect for walking around six miles in lovely countryside. The villages we pass by, I never really see them if I am in a car, it's so interesting to get a different perspective.
I pack my backpack with coffee, a sandwich, a snack, bottle of water, blister plasters (Just in case, though I've not needed them yet.), rain jacket and obligatory seat pad (I have moved on from a carrier bag).
I leave home and off to car share with other walkers. Arriving at the starting point about 30 minutes before we set off I greet other Ramblers who are such friendly folks.

bridges and stiles. During the walk I get to chat to almost all those on the walk. I enjoy photography so stop to take photos along the way recording the walk as we go. Occasionally there is a pause to allow slightly slower walkers to catch up. I often walk with the back marker, who varies with each walk, though we have one lovely gent who often takes the back mark position. He has belonged to the Ramblers for a long time and
knows most of the walks. Hepopularis to include in car share as he knows all the start places and we never get lost. Walking along the public footpaths through the countryside, seasonal flowers sway in the gentle breeze. In spring, daffodils and anemones sparkle in the early sunlight, dew glistening. Slender silver birch trees also catch the light, bright green buds almost bursting, Primulas and hellebores colour the undergrowth. Passing through fields we see sheep, cows and sometimes horses.
On one of the walks we were
royally entertained by a fly-past from the Red Arrows. So many birds to observe on our walks, hawks, finches, dunnocks and many more. There are a myriad of songbirds that delight the walkers. I love to hear the skylarks as we pass through golden fields.I have seen squirrels cheekily stealing food from a picnic table. Breaks for coffee or lunch are when we perch on stones or logs. The seat pad comes in useful when it's damp. Rounding off a very enjoyable walk we often call in at a local cafe or hostelry for a much appreciated drink and chat with our companions.

Magni cent inside a month
While pursuing a full-time healthy lifestyle takes time and no small amount of commitment, even within a month it’s possible to see and feel real changes to who you are, how you feel and the way your body responds to life’s challenges.
Here are five tips to give your health and wellbeing an instant boost, where you can start feeling the positive effects almost immediately.
1. BETTER DIET
Diet is probably the most obvious place to start. It goes without saying, the unhealthier the food you consume, the harder it’s going to be to make a full 180-degree turnaround.
Focus on replacing fatty foods with fruit and fibre, keep a check on your salt intake, cut down on alcohol and make food preparation changes, such as grilling rather than frying. Topping up the body with vitamins and supplements is a good idea.
2. WALKING OR LIGHT RUNNING
Movement is so vital to the human body, and you don’t have to become an Olympic athlete to be able to see and feel the differences.
Daily walks and regular running can significantly improve your outlook over the course of a month, with recent research revealing that doing regular will20-secondthreebrokenenergetic60-secondactivitydownintoseparateburstsbringabout noticeable benefits within four weeks.
The endorphins created during exercise also make you feel great.
3. SLEEP
Getting at least seven hours a night is essential if you’re looking to enhance your health – it will also help you hold off illnesses… both run-of-the-mill colds and viruses, and more serious ailments including cancer, diabetes and stress.
A consistent sleep pattern is also essential, as regulation helps the body figure out the best way to recover from twinges, tweaks and other things that hold us back.
4. WATER
Water is absolutely vital for the human body, and arguably the easiest thing on
this list to tick off, providing we can drink around two litres of the stuff a day.
What’s more, hydrating offers the body an instant and very noticeable boost, so you will get instant gratification for your efforts.
5. FOCUS AND POSITIVITY
Yoga, Pilates, Zumba and a variety of other exercise pastimes are perfect for people looking to become fitter, whilst also boosting happiness and Notmindfulness.onlywill you feel reward for the effort put in, but your inspiration to keep at it and build further will become automatic, because feeling good is addictive!

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column
He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.
In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at whether it’s possible to still be green at times of real economic restraint.
None of us need reminding how tough this year has been, and while we’re all looking for the green shoots of recovery, that greenness has become another sticking point of late, with environmental campaigners looking to keep their own eco priorities live and real.
As consumers, we’re all pretty aware that products and services that are more organic, or better ethically sourced, or that contain a strong environmental edge, are typically more expensive, so that leads us to a potential conflict of choice – do we look after our planet, or do we prioritise the money in our pockets?
The answer – from research I have been doing on part of
my website, and a collection of other polls that pool data on this subject – is very much that green issues take a massive backseat when our backs are against the Nowwall.
that’s not to say I don’t have a green conscience, or the average Joe in the street doesn’t work hard to preserve the planet, but the absolute truth is that in the vast, vast majority of cases – both at times of struggle and even when things are less chaotic – individuals are not willing to make big sacrifices.
What I think is important though is that, in future, it would be nice if people are green, incentivisedbeingtogoanddoingsomeanswearegivenallthesupportweexpectfromgovernment.Weexpecttaxcutsonfuelandadecreaseinoilprice
to be reflected at the pump; we expect utility providers to play by the rules with clear billing and fair price schemes; we expect home insulation initiatives to really add up in the short-term, not 25 years down the line; and we expect new customer incentives to be accompanied by rewards for existing ones.
What’s more, the days of us feeling guilt-tripped into buying a green product over one that isn’t, are probably and hopefully over. Of course, we all want to get back to a place of economic and environmental prosperity, and I’m sure that will come, but our conscience to feed our families has been proven, time and again, to be stronger than anything else.

OutSchool’sSomedosanddon’ts to consider when it comes to applying for a school place for the first time.
DO attend the open days. It’s easy to gloss over an establishment’s flaws when looking at a fancy brochure, which is why attending a school’s open day is essential (even though this is still arguably the best the place will ever look). Upon arriving, pay attention to how the school feels – what’s on the walls, how organised are the classrooms, are the teachers friendly and, if it’s a daytime opening, how engaged are the kids?
DON’T be afraid to ask questions. Take the opportunity to ask teachers and pupils alike how they feel about the school, and don’t fret about being upfront with representatives regarding any nagging doubts you have.
DO look for convenience. While it’s not a main consideration, for parents keen to return themselves to work and productivity while their children are in school, location and proximity are key factors.
DON’T be taken in by cosmetic appearance. Schools come in all shapes, sizes and appearances. While the newer ones may look glossy, modern and straight from an architect’s brochure, it’s what goes on in the classroom, within the pages of books and inside the minds of our wonderful youngsters, that really counts.
DO pay attention to the Ofsted report and league tables. Official statistics will tell you test and exam results for the schools you’re looking at, offering a pretty reliable snapshot of how each is performing, while the Ofsted report will offer a broader understanding of how the curriculum is taught and the pupils’ overall wellbeing.
But DON’T base your decision entirely on that. If an institute has an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating, but you’ve heard of bullying or disruption at the school, it’s important to bear both in mind. Similarly, if a school has a ‘satisfactory’ rating but seems to have got its act together since the report, it may be worth giving it a second look.
DO go with your heart. Whatever the facts and figures, the most important barometer is how you and your little one feel about the school, and that feeling normally comes from the heart.
DON’T obsess over friends. While it’s tempting to want to surround our kids with the buddies they have made in pre-school and the local park, most childhood friendships are made when they start school. Our young ones are true social sponges and encouraging them to make new friends at every opportunity is only a good thing.

Pumped Up Pumpkins
Introduction classic pumpkin pie recipe, and how to make the most of your Halloween
Pumpkin Pie
Right around this time of year the shops are beginning to fill with pumpkin-spiced delights, from lattes, to biscuits and even candles. This ‘spice’ is what makes pumpkin pie such a delectable seasonal treat - a combination of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and allspice, it is warming and comforting. And when mixed with puréed pumpkin flesh, sugar, eggs, butter and milk and baked in a pie crust (store bought if necessary) you basically end up with autumn on a plate.
Top Tips
• Don’t concern yourself with continuing to cook your pumpkin pie if the middle seems less firm. This will only burn the outsides. Instead, allow the middle to firm up naturally during the cooling process when you remove it from the oven.
Line the pastry with baking parchment and baking beans, then bake for 15mins. Remove the beans and paper and cook for a further 10mins until the base is pale, golden and biscuity. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.
Method flour, dusting
1. Place the pumpkin in a large saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Cover with a lid and simmer for 15mins or until it’s tender. Drain and allow to cool.
2. Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Now roll your pastry on a lightly floured surface and place in a 22cm loosebottomed tart tin.
3. Increase heat in the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7 before pushing the cooled pumpkin through a sieve into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, salt, nutmeg and half the cinnamon.
Mix in the beaten eggs, melted butter and milk, then add to the pumpkin purée and stir to combine.
4. Pour into the tart shell and cook for 10 mins, then reduce the temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Continue to bake for
35-40 mins until the filling has just set.
5. Leave to cool, then remove the pie from the tin. Mix the remaining cinnamon with the icing sugar and dust over the pie. Serve chilled.

Your Pumpkin Pie Leftovers
Roasted seeds
When carving your jack-o’-lantern this year, don’t discard that mound of seeds that sit snugly inside, as they are packed with nutrients and can make a delicious snack. Simply scoop out your seeds and separate them from the stringy flesh before rinsing thoroughly in a sieve.
Now they still won’t look quite like the seeds you buy in a supermarket, but that’s because they need to be roasted, so preheat your oven and toss them into a bowl with either a sweet mix (cinnamon and sugar) or savoury (chilli powder, soy sauce and garlic powder), melted butter and a little salt before roasting in the oven. Just be sure to check they not burning and toss regularly.
Curry You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy a pumpkin and chickpea curry, the ideal dish to warm up ‘trick or treaters’ on a chilly Halloween
Startnight.by
frying yellow curry paste with onion and lemongrass, then add chunks of pumpkin flesh followed by vegetable stock and coconut milk. Bring to a simmer before adding a tin of drained chickpeas, cook for 10 minutes more, then serve over rice. It’s spookily good grub.
Recipe Tip
To check when your pie is cooked, use the knife test. Insert the knife in the middle during the baking process –if it comes out clean, it’s cooked.
Tools of the trade
1. Lawnmower
It’s amazing how a simple mow of the lawn can transform it from a rough and rugged outside vista into a stylish statement of beautifully bladed finesse.
Yet while the best machines on the market will wow you not just with their mowing magnificence but a price-tag to match also, there are some basic models that will set you back less than £50.
2. Pruning shears
So much to do with gardening involves keeping nature at bay, so getting a decent pair of pruning shears is essential.
Whether trimming back rose stems or dealing with an unruly bush, regular pruning will maximise light, enabling all areas of your garden to flourish.
3. A soil knife
A soil knife (or hori-hori) is a
Japanese tool with a blade on one side and a serrated edge on the other.
It will cut through roots deep in the soil, so weeding and plant removal from deep in the ground is quick and easy… and dare we say it, rather satisfying!
4. Weeder
A trip to the garden centre can sometimes be a confusing and bewildering experience. Everything on display, feasibly, has a purpose, and a good one at that – but at risk of blowing your entire budget on the latest equipment that promises to energise the flora and fauna of your outside space, here are our top eight tools that every garden must have. and in small ruts, meaning
A weeder is brilliant for removing plant matter thatandslabs, betweencaughtpavingalongedgesinsmallruts, meaningthedaysofbackbreaking yanking of weeds are over.
5. Rake
Leaf debris can make even the healthiest of gardens appear unkempt, but your friendly rake will sweep aside any dead matter to give the lawn a smooth finish. And, of course, you can also use it on soil.
6. Shovel and trowel
There’s nothing quite like digging a hole when wanting to feel connected to nature; and providing your back can deal with the impact of
hammering a metal blade into soil that, inevitably, will have lumps of rock in it, shovel away to your heart’s content.
For smaller areas, and when tending to garden beds, a trowel is a must-have.
7. Kneeling pad
For little more than a fiver you can save your knees from impending, aching doom with a soft kneeling pad.
8. A hose
Finally, you’ll need your garden’s life source, water, available on tap, literally. Hence, a good hose for watering is essential, and certainly saves you lugging a watering can up and down the garden!

He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. is month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses the changing seasons, and why he ventures out into his garden in any weather.
I’ve been talking to a number of people over these summer months and it’s always a pleasure. Naturally, it feels like the part of the year where we all come out and celebrate what it is to have a space that is all ours – we all share in the successes and, okay, some of the failures too!
Yet what’s interesting is the fact the longer the summer goes on, the more the chat seems to evolve. ere is an unspoken devil in the air, and it goes by the name of winter, where gardeners all across the UK dread not just the hibernation of some of the creatures in their garden, but their own removal or withdrawal from service as the skies grow darker and rain threatens.
Of course, I can see why so many of us sink into this
mindset of what is e ectively a subconscious filling of time before things start to pick up again in early spring. ough as I have said on many occasions, there are still so many plants that flourish across the winter months that we can take real pleasure from, so I would be firm in encouraging people to look at winter as a lot more than just a time when we feel like stepping o the neverquieterroutineCertainly,carousel.gardeningmyinthosemonthschanges.Whether rain,
