Easter is just around the corner (as are the school holidays!) although it feels like only yesterday the children went back to school. There are of course plenty of things happening this month aside from an excuse to eat lots of chocolate! Did you know, for example, that 9th April is National Unicorn Day, and that 10th April is Siblings Day? Then we have Earth Day on 22nd April, which has been given added emphasis by recent events and media attention on climate change. The organisers are providing lots of information and free resources for young and old alike who want to become more involved in this vital subject (www.earthday.org). Recently we’ve been reading about how our shopping habits have been changing, especially in this post-lockdown era. According to current predictions, we can look forward to more hybrid retail/digital shopping experiences, more checkout free stores, and rapid growth in the reuse/recycling sector with the second-hand clothing market expected to grow faster than fast fashion. It looks like 2022 is set to be an interesting year in more ways than one! Whatever the upcoming Easter break has in store for you, we hope you and your family get to spend some time together. Until next time,

Christa & Michella

Norton Disney Big Community Dig Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group (NDHAG) have launched an appeal for their Big Community Dig. The dig, which is planned for late summer, will involve the excavation of an Iron Age site next to the area’s nationally important Roman Villa. Once the site is opened, tours will be offered giving people the opportunity to learn more about the heritage site. The appeal will help to raise funds for the services of a supervising archaeologist, reporting costs, processing of finds and insurance. If you would like to find out more or make a donation, visit the group’s website at www.ndhags.wixsite.com You can also help by buying a North Kesteven lottery ticket which has a jackpot of £25,000. Visit www.nklottery.co.uk and search for ‘Norton Disney History’. Or you can buy a T shirt, designed with Iron Age archaeological features, for £15 from the NDHAG online shop at www.jsteamwear.co.uk 4

Belvoir Castle New Adventure Playground announced for summer 2022 New adventures are to be had in Belvoir Castle gardens this summer with the castle investing £350,000 on a bespoke Adventure Playground.

T

he playground will cover four acres and is set to feature a giant timber castle, ship and towers ideal for children and teenagers of all ages. Inside the castle structure and its multiple levels, adventurers will be able to discover hidden tunnels, a secret climbing wall, and a giant tube slide whilst the ramp accessible ship features porthole windows, a climbing net and a zip wire for daring sailors to exit the deck and fly through the trees. There will be plenty for smaller children too with plans for a mini bridge, slide and crawl tunnel as well as a wooden car structure inspired by the present Duke’s 100-year-old Renault. Entry to the Adventure

Playground will be included in all garden tickets with passes available for regular visitors. Also new for 2022 will be Belvoir Revisited, a series of weekend events running throughout the year recreating moments in the castle’s fascinating history. Visitors can

join in with a host of interactive activities from dancing to wartime jazz, learning about Regency-era combat or taking part in the castle’s first-ever Steampunk Weekend. Belvoir will also be celebrating this year’s Platinum Jubilee with a Great British Street Party.

It’s Skincare But Not As You Know It

For the last two years we’ve largely been urged to work from home, and many of us found our grooming regimes changing as a result. The absence of a daily commute and early starts means we’ve been paying more attention to our skincare. This in turn has led to a surge in demand for non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as “medical aesthetics” which are rapidly becoming increasingly accepted as an integral part of a beauty and wellbeing programme for both men and women. Nearly a quarter of people are more interested in aesthetic treatments than they were before the pandemic. Nine out of 10 cosmetic procedures in the UK are now non-surgical and online searches for “aesthetic treatments” and “tweakments” grew by 50% from January 2020 to July 2021.

10

Local high streets have seen the arrival of medical spas (or “medispas”) that are appeasing our new-found appetite for medical aesthetics. Among the traditional spa pick-meups on offer such as facials and massages, medispas are also licensed to perform procedures that at one time could only be found in cosmetic surgeons’ clinics, such as Botox, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal and chemical peels. Most people think of medical aesthetics as being purely for the reduction, reversal, or other treatments to minimise the signs of aging such as wrinkles, age spots, or loose and sagging skin. But it can also refer to treatments related to dermatological conditions or defects such as acne, prominent birthmarks or skin tags, and can also include treatments intended to disguise or diminish the evidence of surgical procedures. Medical aesthetics can also combat areas such as the treatment of excess fat or cellulite, stretch marks, or other skin damage caused by obesity or rapid weight loss. There are even treatments to diminish or erase the appearance of scars, spider veins and other issues such as varicose veins, excessive sweating and skin discolouration. With the majority of aesthetic treatments being more than “skin deep”, anyone offering such services in the UK requires extensive training. Health Education England (HEE)

published a report in 2016 aimed at redefining the standard of training that practitioners should undertake before they can carry out aesthetic procedures. The industry is regulated by collaboration between several cosmetic associations and overseen by two independent bodies: the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) and the Cosmetic Practitioners’ Standards Authority (CPSA).

If you’re thinking of taking advantage of the many advances in medical aesthetics, please do your homework and check out the practitioner’s qualifications, experience and insurance by following these five simple steps: 1. Check they’re registered with a regulatory body like the GMC, NMC or DMC 2. Check they’re registered with a secondary regulatory body like the CQC or Save Face 3. Look for certificates for training and qualifications 4. Check for evidence they are up-to-date with the latest procedures, training and products 5. Confirm their clinic is insured and the products and equipment they use are licensed and genuine About the Author: Helen Say is a freelance copywriter and blogger www.cblservices.co.uk

Ceremonial tree planted to celebrate Queen’s Jubilee A beautiful new plum tree has been planted in the ancient orchard at Sconce and Devon Park in Newark as part of a unique national tree planting initiative created to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

T

he Queen’s Green Canopy campaign invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. With a focus on planting sustainably, the initiative encourages planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the nation, which will benefit future generations. The brand new plum tree aptly named ‘’Jubilee’ was planted by Newark and Sherwood District Chairman Councillor Penny Rainbow at a special ceremony on Friday 11 March. A plaque was also added to commemorate the planting of the tree. Other new fruits trees have been planted at the site and in the autumn spring bulbs including crocus, snowdrops and bluebells will be added. It’s hoped that the orchard can develop into a peaceful spot with a secluded feel and has been left to feel very natural to encourage wildlife. Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and businesses have been encouraged under the Queen’s Green Canopy scheme to play their part in enhancing the natural environment by planting trees. As well as inviting the planting

of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy has consulted forestry experts to create a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the UK to highlight the importance of these woodlands and how to look after them. All these woodlands must be actively managed, which means they are being looked after in the right way. The Queen’s Green Canopy will also be identifying 70 Ancient Trees to be part of a special project to grow new trees by propagation. This will be the start of a larger project to propagate material from many of the UK’s most important Ancient Trees, to ensure that the genetic resource is conserved even when the trees

themselves have died. Newark and Sherwood District Chairman Councillor Penny Rainbow was assisted with the planting by volunteer park rangers. She said: “It’s an honour to be planting a brand new tree as part of the terrific Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. “It’s an opportunity for us to create a long lasting legacy to celebrate her Majesty’s service to the country and one future generations can enjoy. “I hope everyone will enjoy the beautiful space created today to reflect on all that Queen Elizabeth has done for our country as well as being able to use the space to relax and enjoy nature.”

HOROSCOPES BY RUSSELL GRANT

ARIES

March 21st - April 20th Your stars increase your individual magnetism, bringing out the more assertive aspect of your personality. This is the perfect moment to begin aiming for the long-term goal. A relationship can be a surprise and can behave in ways that you wouldn't have imagined. It might be difficult to be together. It can be challenging for you; however, you may need some stability in relationships.

TAURUS

April 21st - May 21st The private part of your life will be where you'll be spending the most of your efforts. Anything that agitates you, like people or places, is going to require more time and effort. Some may believe that love is more in line with words than actions. At present, you don't agree. If someone is looking to take your heart and keep it for the rest of their lives, they must get to know you emotionally.

GEMINI

May 22nd - June 21st Essential decisions you need to make when the month starts can be mentally draining. The good thing is that any doubt about whether you're making the correct decision will vanish by the 8th and you'll begin to feel more at ease with your emotions and life. There isn't an ideal time to express your emotions in close friendships and relationships.

CANCER

June 22nd - July 23rd The new moves you make will provide future advantages. Be sure to keep everyone whose life could impact the decisions informed about any changes. The romance is growing and new friendships are being formed. You are committed to your relationships and you know that it's not enough to see one another on occasion.

LEO

24th - August 23rd You're a unique person with unique ideas and you shouldn't allow a person to denigrate you. You can sing to your own music, dress how you like to dress and love and live your life the way you want to. You deserve to be loved just for your own uniqueness and not based on what others want to see in you. You require disclosure of some sort.

VIRGO

August 24th - Sept 23rd You're more enthusiastic and less passive in relationships or romance, which can cause others to take you, who are familiar with you, to be taken by surprise. One advantage is that you'll have the confidence to speak about what's you're thinking about. Trust and honesty are the foundation of relationships. Trust is worth more than gold.

LIBRA

September 24th - Oct 23rd You're full of energy and drive. Your colleagues will be inspired by your creative flair. Your appreciation for their ideas should make it simple for everyone to agree and then get to work. You might be worried that you and your partner were on different paths and had other aspirations. After the 10th, you'll realise that you have many common interests, which can help maintain your bond.

SCORPIO

October 24th - Nov 22nd If you're looking to improve your appearance, now is the best time to make an effort. The most essential things in your life are work and health. It's not going to stop your thoughts from being enticed by romance and love. However, you're aware of your obligations to others and you will not let them down.

SAGITTARIUS

November 23rd - Dec 21st Your dreams are possible and they can come true. What actions and plans are you taking to realise your goals and goals? The process of planning will assist you in achieving your goals. Make sure your feet are planted on the ground and stay focussed on the practical aspect of things. Romance might not be more straightforward as you know you're looking for more out of life.

CAPRICORN

December 22nd - Jan 20th The family will be top of the list of priorities for you now. The relationships in your home and any home-based projects shared with your family will run smoothly and efficiently due to the time and effort you put into these. Your housemates will be impressed by your enthusiasm. You might not have been expecting it to be that simple.

AQUARIUS

January 21st - Feb 19th A new job or lucrative chance is worth taking. Unexpected twists and turbulences will cause a bit of a bump for a while, but after that, all is going to be fine. You may feel like you're riding a rollercoaster in April as the month starts. Making a move to a different career or lifestyle could be challenging; however, it can also be exciting. It isn't clear how this will impact your relationships.

PISCES

February 20th - March 20th A chance to take advantage of an offer causes you to hesitate. It is possible that you are worried you'd be foolish or that you might be putting too much pressure on yourself by imagining unrealistic dreams. Put aside any doubts. Be confident that you can and will accomplish whatever goals have significance to your life right now.

Money on my mind...

The cost of motoring is In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at budgeting He s the UK s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

H

ere’s an uncomfortable fact for you - many people are appalling ‘budgeters’. We all know what we earn, but we don’t know what we spend, and you cannot balance the see-sawing budget without being clear on both. The biggest problem that people have is they look across the month at what they typically pay for things. So, they’ll look at their food bills, their utilities, their mortgage, car lease and all those things, and that’s all good and well. But you know what, the average family in the UK spends £600 on Christmas, which is £50 a month. They buy a new sofa every three or four years for maybe £1,000. They buy a television that is £300. They go on holiday, and so on. The fact is, rarely are these costs factored into monthly spend, but they should be. We need to break down those big amounts into a monthly cost, across the whole year, and add that to our monthly figures. I have a tool called the ‘Budget Planner’ which is free to use on

my website – have a look. Ultimately, the way I suggest people manage their money is by using a system I call ‘Piggybanking’. It involves moving things into hypothetical ‘accounts’. So, let’s say you have your ‘Standard Bills’ account, which is all the regular bills you need to pay each month; you have your ‘Holidays’ account - you know you spend £1,000 a year on a holiday and that’s about £85 a month. You have your ‘Christmas’ account and you have your ‘Big Oneoffs’ account. Those are examples, but use whatever is personal to you. Each month when you get paid, you siphon the right amount of money into the Bills account,

20 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

you put the right amount of money into the Holidays account, the right amount of money into the Christmas account, and so on. So your Holidays account will categorically confirm to you that you have, say, £512 to spend. If you’re spending more, you cannot afford it, so you have to cut your cloth accordingly. Many people swear by this technique, lots of people swear at it too, but it truly works! In the current climate, we can’t compensate for what’s around the corner, but being equipped to confront it will make you feel good about your finances, your life, and your prospects of overcoming that financial bump in the road.

Walk this Way: Aira Force Waterfall, Lake District We look at one of the Lake District’s most inspiring sights, the Aira Force waterfall, and a walk that, while easy enough on the body, provides intense stimulation for the mind. Distance: 2km Time: Approx. 1.5hrs Terrain: Guided paths and steps Difficulty: Easy Accessibility: Pathways and trails, including some steep ascents Start and End Point: CA11 0JS The 2km walk around the Aira Force waterfall encompasses a woodland walk, two bridges and, of course, the stunning waterfall. This is excellent for families as it’s a short but stunning route, with most walkers beginning at the main car park (CA11 0JS) – however there are additional entry points at the High Cascades and Park Brow car parks. The waterfall itself is 65ft high and is crossed by two charming bridges. The walk is circular and offers an accessible, welltrodden, undulating trail. Trees, bushes and flowers decorate the sides in an enchanting Hobbit-like valley complete with an abundance of birds and squirrels. Those wishing to admire this wonderful sight as part of a longer route are recommended to try the 7km Aira Force and Gowbarrow Trail, which ventures out towards Ullswater Lake, the second largest in the Lake District.

Walking Route 1. From the main car park, the walk begins on the right-hand side of the information kiosk. Follow past the picnic benches until you reach a wall with a gate. 2. Now go through the gate and take the path that leads along the boundary wall and fence. Choose the right-hand fork that follows the boundary fence (the left fork goes to the arboretum). 3. Go through the gap and down a few steps that lead onto a wooden bridge crossing a stream. Continue over the bridge and straight up a set of stone steps. 4. At the top, follow the path. You’ll see a wishing tree trunk where you can leave a coin for luck, and various information signs about the red squirrels that inhabit the woods. There are some steep sections on the way up, which will require the use of a carrier if you are bringing a baby.

26 | Please mention Use Locally when responding to adverts

5. The path follows the stream and winds through the woodland, before dropping down to a stone bridge. Go over the bridge and there is a viewpoint for the base of the waterfall. 6. Venture up the steps to the left. At the top you can choose to turn left or right. To view the top of the waterfall, turn left. You’ll see a set of steps down to another stone bridge that goes over the top of the waterfall. Paths lead off towards nearby fells. Alternatively, to go straight back to the car park, turn right.

Finding a place of peace A voyage into the emotions of the mind this month, with three engaging and intriguing books to look out for. Be Yourself and Happier by Will Young Will Young has written an accessible A-Z guide on mental health, Be Yourself and Happier. The platinum-selling and double-BRIT Award winning singer/ songwriter has long been a mental health advocate, and counts his experiences within the industry as a catalyst for various voyages of self-discovery that have led him to where he is today. “I have been at the coalface of depression and anxiety - a state of mind that’s always under threat, and only by exploring the reasons and causes behind this can we look to make changes.” In the book, Will discusses his breakdown in 2011, and how extensive therapy helped the star to unpick and interrogate everything he thought he knew: how he formed his identity, what he relied on for selfesteem and how he behaved and communicated. Everything he has learnt over the past 10 years is now condensed into this accessible A-Z guide. Published by Bloomsbury on April 21st

A Different Kind of Happy by Rachaele Hambleton Author Rachaele Hambleton - a full-time mum to three daughters and one baby boy, stepmum to two boys and married to her ‘bird-boy’ Josh – has certainly earned her status as one of the most honest and sincere modern writers out there, largely through the success of her Part-Time Working Mummy, Sunday Times bestseller from 2018. Using the strength of her persona as a trusted parenting personality, she returns with A Different Kind of Happy, a book that explores the trials and successes of a blended family situation. The book is a soaring and purposeful guide to modern parenting, with a few catastrophes thrown in along the way! Published by Penguin Random House on April 14th

A Family Affair by Robyn Carr Anna McNichol knows how to take charge. Raised by a single mother, she’s worked to ensure her three children have every advantage she didn’t. And while her marriage has its problems, she values commitment and believes in ‘till death do us part’. Now an empty nester, she’s at the peak of her career and ready to seize the opportunity to focus on her future. But life can change in an instant, and when her husband dies suddenly, Anna’s carefully constructed world falls apart. The mysterious young woman at the memorial service confirms her husband had been keeping secrets, and Anna is determined to get to the truth. Published by MIRA on April 5th

The Composing Cook

GREEK MEATBALLS WITH A TWIST Once you’ve made my Greek Meatballs, there is no going back. In a traditional recipe you would use breadcrumbs but I have gone for Dorito’s instead. These are very tasty and very moreish.

In a large bowl add the beef & pork mince. Add the Doritos’s to a food processor and blitz to create breadcrumbs. Add to the mixing bowl with the beef & pork mince. Now add the potato, onion, garlic & parsley to the same food processor and blitz until finely chopped. Add this mixture to the large bowl also. Now add all the other ingredients, except the oil, into the large bowl and, using your hands, mix well together. Using your hands, divide the mixture to create between 36-38 patties. Roll each patty into a ball and squash each ball down gently to create an oval shape.

INGREDIENTS:

500g beef mince 250g pork mince 100g Doritos cool original flavour corn chips 1 (350g) large potato (unpeeled) 1 medium white onion peeled 3 cloves of garlic handful fresh parsley 1 tablespoon dried mint 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 large egg a good grinding of pepper oil for frying Makes 36-38 Meatballs

Fill a large frying pan with approximately ½ cm of oil and turn the gas on and warm the oil. Add between 6-8 meatballs in the pan and fry for about 2 minutes a side. You want them to be golden brown. Place on a plate with kitchen towel to soak up any excess oil.

LET’S TAKE THIS A STEP FURTHER: This is traditionally served with Greek chips, Greek feta salad, Greek tzatziki sauce. You can watch me make the Greek Meatballs and all the above accompaniments by visiting my YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/TheComposingCook Never fear, I haven’t totally forgotten about Easter. If you visit my website (above), I have created a recipe video called “How To Make Roast Lamb Lasagne using leftovers from a Roast Dinner” which also uses any leftover veg and potatoes.

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the advent of spring, and how our gardens are beginning to open back up again. There is something about spring that just feels like the world is alive and fertile and rich again. You can usually sense it on a particular day – that day when you can smell the season has arrived; when you see those first shoots breaking on an apple tree branch or a hawthorn hedge. It’s like all those months of dampness, coldness and struggle have just flitted away on the breeze – the world feels like a different place. And as a gardener you always have a little moment in February when you think maybe this year it won’t happen, but it always does, and I love it when the first green haze comes across the horizon. Of course, thatt’s the siignall to formulate plans and consider the things you want your garden to represent

this year, and that’ss very exciting. A big part of that iss anticipation, which is an underrrated commodity. People want everytthing instantly now because they are able to go into a supermarkett and have what they wa ant, when they want it. I quite like looking forward in life, I enjoy anticipation because, of course, when it does happen, it’s that much more enjoyable. Where the garden is concerned, there are a few bassics to look on and check - you ne eed to remind yourself of your pllot in terms of sunshine and sh hade, and its capabilities. Remem mber, poor soil isn’t a barrier - you u can grow all kind of things in tu ubs and pots and troughs. And just because what you have may be smalll, it doesn’t mean it’s hard to find thiings to grow in it. It’s easy to grow sa alads in a small space, or tomattoes in summer. Even dwarf fruit in large e pots. No, you won’t be self-sufficcient, but you know that you grew w it. Personally, I’m look king forward to the first sight of assparagus in April. And from this poin nt forward, there will be something new poking its head out every few w weeks – the garden is like a the eatre production playing out in fron nt of you as

things gradually come into their natural season… from winter snowdrops through to daffodils, then tulips, summer strawberries into autumn raspberries. It’s all there in front of you, so make the most of your garden this year by planning for each month now.
