Afternoon Tea at Stoke Rochford Hall The Great British Bake Off and our love of all things summer, make afternoon tea an indulgent treat that works on every level. It reminds me of lazy summer afternoons, adults being sociable and children running around on a vast lawn! That’s my dream anyway! And that dream can be a reality at Stoke Rochford Hall just off the A1 – about a 25 minute drive from Newark.
We visited the magnificent Stoke Rochford Hall last week, for my mother’s birthday, just the type of treat she loves. As we swept down the drive to the Hall, the view is stunning, and walking into the building is just as breathtaking, with the fabulous fireplace dominating the great Hall. (Looking forward to seeing that lit in the winter) Once seated in a bright and
airy room, we settled to choosing our teas and coffees. We chose the Heritage Tea and the Kenyan coffee, both delicious! Sandwiches and cakes arrived on a slate platter, with dainty delicacies of trifle and chocolate fudge brownie alongside macaroons, chocolate lollypops, and a traditional Victoria sponge. The second course of fruit and plain scones, deliciously light, with clotted cream and jam, completed the meal. Service was friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. We lingered over tea and drank in the stunning surroundings - Stoke Rochford is impressive in so many ways, imagining days of Pims on the lawn and promising to return when the weather does finally improve! Afternoon tea is well worth reviving and is a lovely way to make time to be with either family or friends. We so enjoyed it that it sparked ideas off about bringing distant family to enjoy it too. I’d like to make it a monthly ritual, its so much more than time for tea!
Afternoon tea at Stoke Rochford is a very reasonable £19.99 per person; add a glass of fizz to make it even more special. To book ring Stoke Rochford on 01476 530337

Stamford Shakespeare Company Celebrations at Tolethorpe Hall In the year we celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the Stamford Shakespeare Company is marking the occasion with a production of The Tempest, Shakespeare’s final play, full of love, magic, treachery and comedy. The Company is also celebrating an incredible 40 years of performing at the beautiful and historic Tolethorpe Hall with a production of one of Shakespeare’s greatest works, the dark and powerful Macbeth, the first play ever staged there.
MACBETH
To commemorate this milestone there is a special gala night of Macbeth on 6th August. Tickets for this performance include a free programme and glass of champagne or a soft drink. There will also be pre-performance entertainment, including jugglers, jesters, fire eaters, medieval magicians and minstrels, a harpist and a falconer with birds of prey. The third play this year is Alan Bennett’s wonderful adaptation of The Wind in the Willows, perfect fun for all the family.

Heritage in Palermo By Solange Hando Lapped by the blue Tyrrhenian Sea, framed by mountains rising over 1,000 metres, Palermo is the bustling capital of the autonomous region of Sicily. Attracted by the natural harbour and strategic location, myriad civilisations landed on these shores and on its solitary headland, the iconic Mount Pellegrino has seen them all: Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish to name just a few, all leaving their mark on a city which became one of the richest on the Mediterranean. Today Palermo remains an enticing mix of old and new, tree-lined avenues festooned in hibiscus and oleander, traditional street markets, hidden courtyards and breezy squares and narrow twisting ODQHV ZKHUH ODXQGU\ Ă DSV RQ the balconies. The air smells of oranges and lemons and freshly-baked pizza, church bells mingle with the hooting of scooters and tuk-tuks and pony and traps rattle side by side.
pop up around every corner: austere or ornate, Norman, Renaissance, Baroque and more, but most endearing are the hidden chapels in the Vucciria neighbourhood, their gleaming interiors entirely covered in white stucco angels. Now home to the Sicilian Foundation Symphonic Orchestra, it dazzles visitors with its grand entrance and superb decorations, while on some guided tours you might see the original painted stage curtain weighing 450 kilos. As for Palermo’s palaces, most exotic are the Zisa and Cuba in Arabic style, set in the former pleasure grounds of the Norman kings, but most impressive is the Norman Palace, currently the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. Following the Norman Conquest in 1072, the Arabic fortress was transformed into a sumptuous palace for the new Kings of Sicily, and as such is said to be the oldest royal residence in Europe. Beyond the 17th century façade, highlights include the splendid Ruggero Hall, named DIWHU 6LFLO\¡V Ă€UVW 1RUPDQ .LQJ and the 12th century Palatine Chapel. Newark Embroidery
A successful Local Business! Steve & Elaine Beeching are the brains and beauty behind one of Newark’s local successful business’s. Founded in August 2009, to fill a gap in the increasingly competitive market, providing, small quantity embroidered garments, at low cost, with no set up fees, Steve and Elaine had an original ethos in an overcrowded market, inundated with bigger companies charging more for smaller quantities, and then not delivering on time. The original aim was to create a quality embroidery business, supplying small quantities, with no set up fees.

Water, Water Everywhere by Pippa Greenwood
With summer well under way, many gardens are now feeling the need for a bit more water than the rain is giving them - it is hard to believe that not long ago all the plants were suffering due to excess rainfall and waterlogged soil. Now it is important to forget those wet winter days and concentrate on doing everything you can to keep your garden looking good, despite increased temperatures and soil that is drier by the minute. There’s no doubt that you will need to do some watering, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a good-looking and productive garden? If possible, avoid making new plantings right now. Storage Solutions For Every Room By Katherine Sorrell
Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to our homes, so interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas. Our homes are full of stuff, and HDFK URRP UHTXLUHV VSHFLĂ€F solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Alternatively, interior designers can create an overall ‘look’, but should understand space planning, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can help to make the most of your space.

Bathrooms &XVWRP PDGH Ă RRU DQG wall cabinets are ideal for storing toiletries and spare towels, keeping surfaces clear, while vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets can be built around sanitaryware to cover up pipe work.
