No Mow May!
A square meter of lawn left to flower can support three honey bees!
You may have noticed some of our parks and green spaces were a little longer than usual during May - this is because Newark and Sherwood District Council joined the nationwide #NoMowMay campaign and left some areas wild.
T
his included areas of Sconce and Devon Park, Sherwood Heath, Vicar Water Country Park, as well as the open spaces at Clay Lane and Newbury Road in Newark, Boughton housing open space and a number of closed churchyards that we look after including Southwell and Blidworth. Areas have been sown with wildflower seeds that will flower, creating a haven for
wildlife and supplying essential nectar for pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Norton Disney’s
ANCIENT RIDER GOD
In 1989 metal detectorists were scanning the fields of Norton Disney. They made a chance discovery of an ancient relic which had national importance. A small bronze figurine of a Roman rider god, “Mars Thingsus” appeared from the ground for the first time in several hundred years. Norton Disney is full of Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman archaeology. Within it’s boundaries lies the scheduled monument of a Roman Villa. The A46, the Fosse Way is a Roman road running across the country from Lincoln to Exeter forms one of its boundaries. Pottery and other metal finds scattered in its landscape detail it’s Roman past. The figurine was taken to the British Museum in London for assessment. It was revealed to be a particularly fine example of Mars, the war god, similar in a appearance to a Roman cavalry officer. When the figurine eventually came up for auction it was sold to the British Museum where it is now on display. Nobody at the time in Lincolnshire was made aware of the figurine. Three years ago a chance online encounter between a doctor in Roman villa archaeology, Dr Eleanor Scott, a doctor in Irish equestrian archaeology who mentioned to a member of the Norton Disney History and Archaeology group "the rider god of Norton Disney". Dr Rena Maguire had even written a paper about him
in an Irish archaeological journal. It seems the Norton Disney rider god is special due to the gait of his horse, something not seen in modern horses and tells a story about ancient equestrianism going back to at least the Iron Age. In any event his ancient followers believed he had supernatural powers and protected them. The rider god has now become the emblem of the Norton Disney archaeology group and is also now formally recorded on the official archaeological
database. With so much more being discovered about the ancient history of Norton Disney, it seems his “modern followers” locally are also protecting his realm from harm by revealing the local archaeology and in so doing are countering the threat of a rendering plant next to the Roman Villa. Those that watch “American Gods” on Amazon Prime will know its best not to mess with the gods of old. They have supernatural powers, don't you know!

Kneesall and Laxton Circular Walk
Photograph
s by Adrian
Amer
This 7 mile walk in the beautiful undulating countryside between Kneesall and Laxton begins in the car park at the rear of Kneesall church. The footpath passes through the school grounds and left into Ossington Road. Turning right, Baulk Lane leads to a footpath sign taking you over a couple of well marked field paths. A path which skirts the next field takes you into the wood near Laxton Common. On entering the wood, turn right and walk about 100 metres to find another track which leads to a road. Cross over the road, follow the farm track and at the top of the hill turn right towards Kirton Wood. The path skirts the wood and then crosses another field before going over a small bridge. To the right you can see the National 8
Holocaust Centre which is well worth a visit. A clearly marked path leads you to a stile, down into a valley, through a gate and rises again on the edge of a field. At the top there is an excellent view of Lincoln Cathedral and Cottam and West Burton power stations. Taking a farm track that goes to the right and skirts the field, then a very muddy path between two tall hedges, you reach Laxton Village. Laxton is an interesting village famous for its ancient open field strip system. The old village pinfold has been
renovatedd and nd is now a an excellent picnic stop with seating and shelter from the wind. The final section of the walk takes you up a wooded track towards Mill Field and then back on a green path to Kneesall. A group of Newark Ramblers enjoyed this walk at the beginning of May when the cowslips were in bloom and the hedgerows were full of blossom.

National Smile Month
National Smile Month is upon us! Everyone wants to have a healthy smile, so how can we do things in our everyday lives to help protect our teeth and make sure we and our children stay healthy and happy? Limit sugar in foods: Did you know that on average children eat more than twice the recommended amount of free sugar? Try ch heck king your food d labels for sugar content, and swapping sweet treats for alternatives such as apples or vegetables. Check ingredient lists for other things which might contain sugar, such as syrups or molasses. Why not make a game with your children to check what food you have in the house and if it's high or low in sugar? Brush twice a day: Remember to use a pea sized amount of 12
toothpaste, and spit it out and don't rinse. This helps to protect them against decay. Always use a fluoride toothpaste with at least 1000ppm for ch hildren and d 1450ppm for adults.
Visit your dentist regularly: Your dentist will always want to check your teeth to make sure they remain healthy. At Collingham Dental Practice, we recommend our patients to come routinely to catch small problems before they become big ones. Ask your dentist for further oral health advice specific to you and your family. Together we can mak ke everyone's smiile as happy as possible.

Must-Read Books For June Whet your appetite with snapshots of summer holidays spent by the seaside, or perhaps immerse yourself in a gripping thriller – here are this month’s sumptuous book releases. A Day at the Beach Hut: Stories and Recipes Inspired by Seaside Life by Veronica Henry (June 10th) A family enjoy their last holiday at a much-loved beach hut. The tide brings in an old face – and a new temptation – while a writer’s retreat is shaken up by a surprise arrival. The simple pleasures of the seaside compete with the Instagram dream, a couple’s future is turned upside down, and a celebratory evening takes a stormy turn. And as the sun sets, an unexpected romance is simmering... Escape to the coast with this delicious collection of short stories and beachhut inspired recipes from Sunday Times bestselling author Veronica Henry the perfect summer treat! The First Day of Spring by Nancy Tucker (June 24th) Not for the faint-hearted, this chilling debut wastes no time in pulling the reader deep into its murky undertow. 16
childhood during which she grew up ‘black, weird, and overwhelmingly uncool in a mostly white neighbourhood in upstate New York’, Henderson uses wit and candour to delve into some important topics. A taut and impeccably crafted pageturner about what propels one eight-year-old girl to commit an unspeakable act, and the tensely moving effect it has on the rest of her life, The First Day of Spring is not just about how neglect and loneliness can shape a child, but also how they can have a lasting impact even when that child becomes a mother herself. The Ugly Cry: A Memoir by Danielle Henderson (June 8th) a name for herself as a television writer (Maniac, Divorce and Dare Me), Danielle Henderson now turns her formidable talent to the memoir.
Mostly though, it is a book bond between a vulnerable child and her devoted grandmother. Hungry by Grace Dent (June 10th) The highly anticipated memoir from one of Britain’s bestloved food writers, Hungry is a joyous journey through Dent’s fascinating life. From growing up eating beige food to becoming a celebrated London gourmand, it is a personal story, but also everyone’s story – from cheese and pineapple hedgehogs and treats with your nan, to the exquisite joy of a chip butty covered in vinegar and too much salt in the school canteen on a grey day; this a poignant reminder of why food is such an integral part of our lives and our various cultures.

Owner of Rutland Farm Park, a small 18-acre working farm and family visitor attraction in the market town of Oakham. How did you become a farmers wife? Every morning I walked to school with my friend past the farm gates, every day I said one day I would find out what was behind the gates, little did I know 15 months after leaving school I would marry into the farm, and 43 years later I would still be behind the gates! What did you want to be when you were little? I always wanted to be a nurse and was due to go to High Wycombe to be a nurse cadet the September after leaving school, but love found me first! What is a typical day on the farm like for you? There is no typical day on the farm - feed animals, muck out animals, run the tea room. Catch escaped animals, mend a fence, unblock a loo. Who knows what will happen? What do you love most about what you do? No two days are ever the same and being with the animals, especially during lock down. It was extremely hard work with no staff fff but animals are wonderf rful f at lifting your mood

Archery! A sport for all
Newark Castle Archers were established in 2014 by our founder Michael Dutton. We shoot at Newark Rugby Club during our outdoor season and at Magnus community sports hall in the indoor season. You can be part of a team and/or an individual, you can be male or female age 8 years to 100 years and more importantly anyone of any ability can take part as there are so many ways to be able to shoot a bow safely with the correct support and guidance. It can also be a family affair. There are many families who are members of local clubs and at Newark Castle Archers we have a Mum, Dad and their two children all shooting at various distances. The advantage of archery is you can have your targets next to one another
even if they are different distances as everyone shoots from the same shooting line. Many of us have come to realise the importance of sport, particularly over this last year, not only for our physical fitness but also for our mental fitness, and archery certainly is a sport that can be helpful for both. Archery is about focus; it is about making that shot to the gold. When you are on the shooting line, looking at that target, surrounded by fellow archers, out in a field with hopefully sunshine everything else disappears for a few
seconds as you aim that arrow and release it to the target. As with many sports training is the key and archery is no exception. All potential archers are required to complete a beginner’s course prior to them being able to join their local club and Archery GB. Most clubs offer these throughout the year, and this is where you will get the very important safety rules, which all archers must adhere to, and how to put a bow together, learn basic technique, how to load arrow into bow and more.

It is with regret that The Newark Half Marathon volunteer committee, in consultation with our sponsor have made the decision not to hold our run in 2021
Planning will commence to hold the run again Sunday 7th August 2022 This has been an extremely hard d ecision to make, however, as a volunteer organising committee who rely on the support of the local town and community organisations, we feel that staging the event would not be viable in August 2021. While we understand you may be as disappointed as we are. There is a lot involved with organising the race (traffic management, entries, sponsors, vendors etc). In the continued uncertainty and any changes to
the roadmap we would be unable to financially or logistically make changes. Our event is held in open public places where it would not be possible to limit social contact or stage a ‘closed off’ event. The committee wants to host the best possible event and showcase our community spirit while raising money/exposure
to local charities and community projects. Please look out for updates on our website and Facebook. Thankyou all for your understanding in this matter. Stay safe and we'll see you all again very soon. The Newark Half Marathon Committee
Entrants signed up for 2020 who opted to defer to 2021 will be transferred to 2022 or can contact us at newarkhalfmarathoninfo@gmail.com to obtain a refund from Resultsbase (minus the transaction fee).

Ingredients (serves four) • 1 large whole chicken • 1 440ml can of beer
Recipe Tip
Investing in a decent instant-read meat thermometer will help you get perfect meat every time.
Barbecue Beer Can Chicken Introduction
Turn up the heat on your barbecue this summer with this sumptuous chicken recipe. Not only does the beer can method make your meat supremely tender and moist, but the sight of an upright bird balancing precariously on a can over hot coals also provides a great conversation starter for you and your guests.
Method 1. Set up your barbecue for cooking over indirect heat (either set your coals over on one side of the barbecue or light just one side of a gas grill) and wait for the flames to die down. While your barbecue is warming up, prepare your rub by mixing everything in a large bowl. 2. Rinse the chicken under cold water and pat it as dry as you can using kitchen towel. Proceed by covering the bird in your rub, being sure to get into all the nooks and crannies (including inside the cavity). 30
Next, open your beer, empty half of the beer out and carefully place your chicken over the open end of the can so that it is inside the cavity with the legs hanging down. 3. Position the bird on the barbecue so that it is not over any direct heat and then close the lid. Cook for 1hr and 20mins until the skin is crisp and the juices run clear (or a meat thermometer reads 75 Celsius) cooking for a further ten or so minutes if it is not completely done. Remove the chicken from the barbecue, leaving to rest for 20 minutes. Serve with salad and warm pitta bread.
For the rub: • 3tbsp olive oil • 2tbsp smoked paprika • 1tbsp dark brown sugar • 1tsp garlic powder • 1tsp cayenne pepper • 1tsp salt • 1tsp ground black pepper
Top Tips • Because this recipe involves roasting an entire chicken upright, you may need to adjust your barbecue accordingly. If you have a small barbecue take out the grill and place your chicken in a deep and sturdy roasting pan alongside the coals so you can close the lid. You can also make this recipe in the oven by placing your tin at the bottom and removing all the shelves. • Don’t worry if you don’t have all the spices for the rub at hand. It’s totally fine to improvise with your own favourite seasonings, or even just a butter rub with fresh garlic and lemon juice will still yield delightfully and flavoursome tender meat. • Buy the best quality chicken you can find. Not only are higher welfare birds better looked after, but they also produce better tasting meat.

Let’s Get Wild
Turn your garden into a veritable paradise for the birds and the bees by creating a wildflower meadow. Simple, environmentally beneficial and stunningly beautiful. Not only is it easy to create your own little wildflower meadow, it’s also fast, meaning that any patch of land you have bare can be germinated in a matter of months. That means you could be gazing out over a carpet of poppies, cornflowers, daisies, cowslips and bluebells as summer draws to a close. Perennial flowers will flourish in uncultivated soil, whereas cornfield flowers will do better in richer earth. You can buy ready-mixed seeds which will be tailored to certain variables such as soil containing heavy clay, boggy land by the pond’s edge, or even seeds that are specifically combined to provide the maximum nourishment to bees – such pollinators include Sunflower, Borage, Evening Primrose and Corn Marigold. Make sure you thoroughly weed the soil before scattering your seeds - you need 1g per square metre of pure wildflower seeds and 5g per square metre of grass and wildflower meadow seeds – and ensure the earth remains consistently moist thereafter.
Ox-eye Daisies Tall and gracious, these white and yellow beauties are easy to grow – they thrive in the sun – though they can also overwhelm a plot if not kept in check.
Cornflowers
Cornflowers bring a touch of exotic elegance to your flowerbed. Surprisingly hardy, they flower from late spring into brilliant white flowers with deep purple stamens that bees, unsurprisingly, find irresistible.
Common Knapweed
MUST-HAVE WILDFLOWERS FOR YOUR GARDEN
Though some may view it as a pest, this nonetheless brings its own rugged loveliness to your wildflower crop and also will provide food for birds if seed heads are left over winter.
Forget-me-not
Honeysuckle
Hemp Agrimony
Foxgloves
This lovely lilac biennial bloom not only adds a spray of colour to your lawn, but it also attracts various pollinators, and its leaves are eaten by the caterpillars of several moth species bringing an abundance of insect life to your garden. This noble native perennial looks rather striking when grown amid other more colourful wildflower varieties. Preferring the shade, it grows tall and untamed and provides a dellecttab ble ne ectar for butterflies.
32
With its vibrant white, pink and yellow petals and unusually long tendrils, one might be forgiven for thinking this a flower from another planet, but this fragrant bloom is as British and as iconic as they come. Bright, abundant and beautiful with its tubular purple flowers, these are ideal for the back of your miniature flower meadow as they grow tall and regal attracting g many a bumblebee.
