Memorial bench and tree dedicated to late District Council colleague, Robert Hayden
A memorial bench, plaque, and new tree were unveiled yesterday, at Sconce and Devon Park, in honour of Robert Hayden, a colleague at Newark and Sherwood District Council who sadly passed away in July after a battle with illness.
Friends, family, and colleagues gathered at the site of the commemorative bench in
remembrance of Robert on what would have been his 63rd birthday. Robert, a much-respected member of the Grounds Maintenance team, had worked for the District Council since 1984, and the site was chosen as Sconce and Devon had been his favourite park he worked on during his 37 years of service in Newark and Sherwood.
Newark achieves Silver Gilt Award in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition
Congratulations to those involved in this year's Historic Newark in Bloom for the tremendous achievement awarded during this year’s Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Britain in Bloom 2022 competition.
Newark received the Silver Gilt Award in the Large Town Category, a testament to the dedication of those who have been working so hard towards the campaign this year. Silver Awards were given to the Castle Barge Pub for Best Pub or Hotel Garden and to Bishops Court for Best Kept Front Garden. The beautiful cottage garden at St Mary’s Church also received a special Judges Award.
Significant points were earned in various areas of the district including:
l Our four Green Flag Award parks
l Sconce and Devon Park for the beautiful wildflower area
l Willow Holt for hosting educational classes for schools and Brackenhurst College students.
l Newark Castle and the beautiful grounds, along with its rich history
Special mentions were given to the Hawton Road Allotments and the District Council’s Street Scene Team, alongside Lynn and Simon from the Environmental Services team. RHS’s annual gardening competition takes place
nationwide, with the hope each year it will be used as a tool for building communities and tackling local issues together. The competition looks to inspire communities across Britain to make positive changes to their local environment through horticultural, environmental and community action.

Six Million
Roses
Six Million White Roses - An exceptional art exhibition dedicated to the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust from November 5th, Newark's elegant 18th Century Buttermarket will become home to an unmissable event, which showcases the work of over 40 professional artists and sculptors brought together to create a breath-taking display of raw emotion. 'Six Million White Roses' is a unique exhibition dedicated to the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, victims of war worldwide, and those who stand up to hatred. The Charity event organised and curated by Susi Wright of Meander and Mooch Gallery, artist Lynne Whitfield and Jill Robinson of The National
Holocaust Centre and Museum, aims to hit the observer squarely between the eyes, taking them on a rollercoaster of emotion, all at once uplifting, thought provoking, emotional and humbling. The artwork is a result of inspiration from visits and workshops held at The National Holocaust Centre and Museum.
The exhibition, which tend to pull no punches, includes work by Ruth Schwiening glass artist and Holocaust Survivor, Tom Voyce winner of Sky Landscape Artist of the Year 2017 and many more.
The public can immerse themselves in this event Monday to Saturday from 10am until 3.30pm from November 5th to 26th. Admission Free. Children under 15 must be accompanied.

Remembrance Sunday Service organised by Newark Town Council in conjunction with The Royal British Legion. Before the service, guests will gather in the Ballroom and are welcomed by the Civic Party at 10.15am. A procession will be formed, which will then make its way to the Parish Church. At this point, the Mayor’s Officer will accompany the Deputy Town Mayor to the cemetery where they will lay a wreath on the War Memorial. There is a parade of standards through the town, starting at the London Road Car Park.
All guests will gather for a small service by the War Memorial at St Mary Magdalene Parish Church where wreaths will be laid. The congregation then moves into the Church for the formal service. During the service the Town Mayor lays a poppy on the Book of Remembrance. After the service the guests will return to the Town Hall.
There will also be a Remembrance Sunday Service at 3pm in the Memorial Garden at the Newark Air Museum

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column
He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at the current energy crisis, and the fact no real solution appears close.
Our energy sector is in a mess, and there is little doubt about that. For too long we have experienced this continual up and down shift of prices and supply and tariffs and everything else that, as consumers, drives us bonkers.
The reality of what we have and what’s going on right now has been brewing for a long time. A perfect storm of situations, from Brexit to covid to the conflict in Russia, effectively means we are being throttled in our desire to heat and light our homes, ensure water comes through our taps and more.
You may say we have been unlucky to find these factors all colliding in together at one time, yet it is the job of the government – and any sort of decent opposition – to put fail safes in place so that when something catastrophic like this happens, the end result isn’t the sort of bewildering increase in bills that really may move a greater quantity of people into poverty than we have ever seen before.
It’s a disastrous combination and we are praying for short-
and medium-term solutions that will see not just the most vulnerable through the winter, but everyone else besides, because this is a national problem coming at a time of huge inflation and cost of living emergency.
Let’s just go to a basic summary of what we have here – in the UK we’re talking about having privatised energy firms, but we effectively now have restricted competition and regulated prices in the form of a price cap. You have to ask yourself, what is the benefit of privatisation if you work in that marketplace?
The next price caps – they’re going to be in January and April – will reveal where we go from here.
All I can say right now is energy bills will go down – they will be lower in April than they will be in January, but higher than they are now.
And while we wait for a solution, we will need to ride this out – we have no choice. Yet rest assured the consumer has been sold down the river and the lessons of this will resonate with both current and future governments, as they should.

Remember Remember, a good book this November
This month, four November autobiographies to while away those increasingly dark nights.
Gloves Off by Tyson Fury
He presided over quite possibly the greatest sporting comeback ever – a colossally overweight, drug-addicted former champ whose deterioration in physical health was as profound as his plummet in mental health.
Thus, this no-holds-barred tome of bamboozling brilliance, both in the ring and out of it, chronicles the entirety of the Gypsy King’s career to date, from his tempestuous Travelling upbringing, through to the devotion he has to his wife and children.
Grounded yet never ground down, this book is an extension to his previous autobiography, released in January 2021, and worth the read. Published by Penguin Books on November 10th
Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry
Matthew Perry is the incredible actor that brought to life Chandler Bing in Friends - the funny, witty, and often goofy character that lived across the hall from Rachel and Monica. Almost every one of his scenes had us in stitches, but it wasn’t until the reunion show that many realised Matthew was dealing with some profound struggles.
This moving memoir documents being catapulted to dizzy
stardom; it’s about fame, wealth, living with addiction and recovering from some truly dark days. Published by Headline on November 1st
Too Much by Tom Allen
With trademark wit and insight, Tom Allen writes about becoming a reluctant adult - leaving home, securing a boyfriend, and finally growing up by facing the grief of losing his beloved father.
The comedian, actor, writer and presenter, who is host of The Apprentice: You’re Fired and Bake Off: The Professionals, shares his unwillingness to move on from the arrested development of millennial life, whilst philosophising over travel adventures to Japan, America, and beyond. Published by
& 80s
World
Ticket to the World: My 80s Story by Martin Kemp Ticket to the World is a joyous, nostalgic celebration of eighties culture from one man at the centre of it all.
In this candid, evocative memoir, Martin Kemp reflects on the unforgettable decade that made him, and that he in turn helped to shape, as he reminisces on leading the New Romantics, adventures with Spandau Ballet, the eradefining Live Aid and many other memorable moments along the way.
From friendships with George Michael, Sade and Boy George to living under Thatcher, from his musical influences to some of his more distinctive fashion choices, Ticket to the World explores both Martin’s personal experiences and the social and political climate underpinning the decade. Light up a Life has always been an uplifting and meaningful way to remember family and friends whilst supporting the care we provide at Beaumond House.
This year, we hope that you will join us as we gather as a community, sharing memories and lighting candles in memory of those loved ones who are no longer with us.
Firstly, we would like to invite you to Light up a Life and make a dedication to a loved one. Dedications are welcome in memory of anyone, not only those with a connection to Beaumond House.
When you donate a minimum of £5 per dedication you will be given the opportunity to purchase a limited edition
Light up a Life pin badge for an additional £1.
We are also offering personalised feather filled baubles for you to hang on your Christmas tree. Each bauble will be handmade, with love, by one of the Day Therapy patients at Beaumond House and costs £5. These can be collected from Beaumond House reception, one of our charity shops (Newark, Collingham and Southwell) or at one of the services.
For the first time, Beaumond House is also giving supporters the opportunity to dedicate a light on a beautiful virtual tree.
Finally, as in previous years, Beaumond House would like to invite you to join us at one of the Light up a Life services
which will incorporate readings, songs and time for reflection and remembrance. You can also hang a personalised tag on the Christmas trees at each of the churches. Our services are held on:
Monday 5th December - 7.00pm at St John The Baptist Church, Collingham
Tuesday 13th December - 7.00pm at The Church of St Mary Magdelene, Newark
Thursday 15th December - 7.00pm at Southwell Minster, Southwell

Harry & Megan Hindley, the founders and creators of Copper Studios. Both Harry and Megan have studied in Performing Arts and have years of professional experience. In September 2015 Harry & Megan decided to offer a Musical Theatre class at the Nottingham Girls Academy on a Friday evening for students wanting to explore singing, acting and dance. of months down the line,
In 2016 the couple decided to move to a larger venue and began classes at The Fernwood School in Wollaton, as well as running classes at the Kimberley Parish Hall. These classes were known under the name 'Nottingham Youth Performance Academy (NYPA)’. The musical theatre program allowed children to explore all realms of performing arts and discover what kind of entertainer they want to become. The professionalism and discipline are what made them stand out from the rest as students were learning and growing week by week which was reflected in the hit showcases and performances. By this time, they were in high demand for extra classes as a flurry of students were joining. In addition to this the pair were both running workshops, private singing lessons and school activities. In 2017 they received the keys to their Nottingham studio. The studio is purpose built for the training of young performers; the mission was to turn the old, dusty factory into a

vibrant performing arts studio. The large dance studio is the perfect space to choreograph, learn and create, while the singing studio is filled with endless pages of music for you to discover and explore. After opening the Nottingham studio, we have seen the company go boom with more students joining, a plethora of productions and full scale musicals created and performed, as well as many students having incredible opportunities such as performing and being offered jobs, some including; Short Films, Collabro Tour, Outdoor Festivals, Concerts and recording sessions. In 2022
Copper Studios secured the keys to their second location in Newark-on-Trent. This wonderful studio space will host a weekly timetable of performing arts classes which opened October 2022. Newark is a wonderful town with lots of independent businesses, in which Copper Studios are excited to be a part of. Their vision is to create a performing arts studio like no other in Newark offering weekly classes in an eclectic mix of arts and styles for those wanting to pursue the arts as a career, or simply just to build confidence and make new friends.
All their classes offer a free taster session for the first session, so what are you waiting for?

Tom Aikens’ Pro teroles
Introduction
There is something so contradictory about profiteroles that they keep me coming back for more. There is the sweetness of the chocolate against the plain cream; the dryness of the pastry against the moisture that spills from the middle; and a solitary, innocent-looking ball that ends up being filling and extroverted. What I love most about profiteroles is the fact they’re easy to make yet considered luxurious and even slightly opulent; so here’s a recipe that, in a similar way, is simple, yet sensational!
Method
1. Put the butter, sugar and salt for the profiteroles in a pan with 250ml of water and bring to a simmer. Add the sifted flour and stir for a good 5 minutes over a low to medium heat, until the paste comes away from the pan.
2. Transfer this immediately to a food mixer or processor with a beater attachment. Add the eggs, one by one, and beat to a smooth, shiny paste. Put this in a bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave to cool.
3. Preheat the oven to 190°C/ gas mark 5. Spoon the choux
paste into a piping bag with a plain nozzle and pipe 2.5cm blobs onto a baking tin. Each one should stand up nice and high, and you should get roughly 30 profiteroles in total. Bake for about 15 minutes until golden in colour. Pierce each one to let out the steam and cool on a wire rack before filling.
4. To make the crème Chantilly, add the vanilla seeds, scraped from the pod, to the whipping cream along with the caster sugar and vanilla extract and whip until firm. Pipe into the choux buns.
Ingredients (serves 4)
For the profiteroles - 80g unsalted butter - 25g sugar - ½ tsp salt - 150g plain flour, sifted - 4 eggs - 2 handfuls of chopped almonds, to serve
For the crème Chantilly - 1 vanilla pod - 250ml whipping cream - 40g caster sugar - ½ tsp vanilla extract
For the chocolate sauce - 50g unsalted butter - 250ml double cream - 180g sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract - 100g cocoa powder - 50g dark chocolate
5. To make the chocolate sauce, put the butter, double cream, 180g of sugar and vanilla extract into a pan and bring to a simmer. Add the cocoa powder and whisk while continuing to cook for 5 minutes at a slow simmer. Break up the dark chocolate and put it into a bowl. Pour over the hot chocolate mixture and stir until the dark chocolate has melted, then pass the sauce through a fine sieve.
6. Drizzle the choux buns with warm chocolate sauce and sprinkle with the chopped almonds.

Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column
He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist, and all-round horticultural inspiration. is month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses the next generation of green-fingered gardeners.
You’ll find me talking quite a bit about the new breed of gardener coming through. For me, it’s a natural evolution that presents to me two di erent things – firstly, the art of gardening is much more interesting and much cooler than it ever was in my day; and secondly, it seems as though I am becoming more and more aware of my own mortality!
Percy rower was the one who inspired me most when I was a kid. I watched him on Gardening Club on the box, and as the years have gone by, I have been lucky enough to work with a number of the horticultural greats.
Christopher Lloyd was a friend, Beth Cha o is a friend who I really value and whose work I really admire.
A er a while you realise you have progressed from the student
to the teacher, and I’ve always been very proud to be that person. Ultimately, I want to inspire everybody to get into the garden, because I think there are so many benefits.
When I am presenting, I never have a set section of society or type of person in mind.
I guess, in a way, I am presenting to myself - I want anybody and everybody to start thinking about ge ing into the garden. We need to show people that it isn’t di cult or boring, that is it is exciting, and that most of it is just common sense.
And I do admit, the likes of James Swi , James Wong, Annemarie Powell, Katie Rushworth and Frances Tophill all have a knack of conversing to young audiences that I probably don’t have… and that’s great.
We have to keep evolving what we say and who we want to
position it to, because as I have said before there are so many other distractions for young people these days.
I want to see our gardens and our outside spaces continue to flourish over the decades to come, despite the noise and appeal of doing other things elsewhere; and you know what, I’m sure they will.

Balderton Tile Centre
QUALITY PRODUCTS .
Kitchen Diner
A lot of preparation was needed for this job. Due to the (Anhydrite) screed which had been laid in the extension, it can take 3-4 months to dry. This wasn't ideal for the customer, so we used an accelerant designed to speed the drying process up and seal it. Underfloor heating was then installed over the existing area, this was then levelled and the whole area was covered by a decoupling membrane. This was then tiled with one of our tiles a wood effect called Harewood Grey.
WORKMANSHIP .
Welcome Break, Newark
Main floor (approx. 210m2), this was started on Friday (26/08/2022).
We started by priming the area, to stabilise the substrate and ensure a good bond for the adhesive. After the primer dried, we could start laying the tiles. As with in the bathrooms we again used levelling clips to help speed up the process, while ensuring perfect consistency. Once all the tiles had been laid grouting could commence. With the massive effort from everyone involved, it was being finished by 11am on Sunday (29/08/2022)!
Castle House, Nottingham
We have recently completed this large job at Castle House in the centre of Nottingham. The spacious 6 Bedroom house has undergone a massive transformation, ready to start its new life as an Airbnb. The room pictured was previously a vault, the client opted to keep some of the original features such as the door. A lot of time and effort was spent making sure this room was finished to an incredibly high standard we think it really shows!
