Vocal Coach Since I began working in the Newark area, I have enjoyed teaching a large number of students in many different genres, from pop through to classical. Seeing a person’s confidence increase is very rewarding and the improvement in their vocal ability is often quite outstanding. I believe a large part of achieving something to the best of your ability is avoiding self-doubt and realising your capabilities. I take on many students who will often say “I can only sing fast songs” or “I can’t sing high”. This is often not the case; they just haven’t been taught how to use their voices. Like any musical instrument, you have to know how to use it in order the get the most out of it. Although most of my students are new to singing lessons when they start with me, I also coach seasoned performers who want to keep their vocals in top condition. We now have a professional sound booth in the studio and when I think students are ready, they can record a CD. As well as keeping a record of their progress, and a demo of their vocal skills, they also make a great present for friends and family.

Namaste Everest Inn It seems like there has been many new restaurants opening in Newark recently, and occasionally one stands out as being a firm favourite, and this is exactly how I felt when I left the Everest Inn last Friday evening. The restaurant is modern, light, airy, spacious, and very welcoming. Once shown to our seats, service was speedy without feeling hurried and the menu mouthwatering. It was really hard to make a choice and eventually I took the advice of the staff and settled on the Hariyali Lamb curry as a main course and the house speciality of MoMo dumplings as a starter. We also sampled the Tandoori Lamb chops and, the mix platter and the Prawn Malabar curry with sides of Chana Masala and Sag Aloo. This was a feast fit for 4 people and the portion sizes were large enough to feed any hungry person. We had terribly over ordered but sometimes you just like to try a little of this and a little of that! i didn't ask for a doggy bag but Im sure that this would be no problem here!

Lassi? Mangos, yoghurt and mango pulp combine to make a delicious and refreshing drink to enable you to try a little hotter curry than normal! As all dishes are freshly prepared to order, spices can be adjusted to individuals palettes and so if you love madras but its a tad too hot, just let them know and they will make it to suit your preferences. The Newark Everest Inn is the latest restaurant, others being in Stamford, Grantham and Lincoln, pioneering the development of Nepalese food in the UK from master chefs Dev Banda and Khageshwor Kharel, staying true to the origins of the cuisine with a innovative twist, and with the philosophy of “Quality Food, Exceptional service and Oustanding Value� I have to say, they have succeeded!

All the dishes were delicious and the presentation is stunning, staff are quick to replenish drinks and take away plates after you have finished. This is a restaurant where you could easily have a quick lunch time meal or linger over a lovely evening meal with friends or family. GEORGE BOOLE COMMEMORATING GENIUS Mathematician George Boole was born in Lincoln in 1815, the first born of John and Mary Boole. Boole's father was a Master Shoemaker with a shop in silver Street Lincoln. Despite the fact that his work laid the foundations for all modern computer technology he remains little known outside the specialist mathematics community. Virtually every modern electrical appliance uses the symbols 1 and 0 for its on/off power switch and this symbolism derives from Boole's work. Boole was a self-taught mathematician who became the winner of the Royal Society's first Gold Medal for Mathematics and first Professor of Mathematics at what is now University College Cork. He established a school at 3

world's tallest mountain is named, and they had five daughters together. Boole died in 1864 of pneumonia at the tragically young age of 49. This lecture will explore Boole's life and legacy.

NEWARK BLUES FESTIVAL After taking a break in 2014, Newark Blues Festival will be back bigger and better than ever in 2015, over the weekend of Friday 11th to Sunday 13th September. The festival will once again see over 40 free to enter gigs in venues around the town, alongside a full programme of live music on the Kevin Thorpe Main Stage in the historic Newark Castle Grounds, featuring a range of British Blues Award nominees and winners. ewark Blues Festival is a not-for-profit event and is organised by a team of volunteer musicians and music enthusiasts, who want to raise the profile of Newark, promote blues music, encourage younger people to get involved in music and provide a platform for local Blues artists to perform. Thanks to the generous support received from a range of local businesses and organisations, Newark Blues Festival is able to stage nearly all of the weekend’s events for free. This year, all of the performances taking place in the twelve participating pubs around the town, plus the daytime events in Newark Castle Grounds, will be free to enter. The only ticketed event, Blues at the Castle, from 6pm on the evening of Saturday 12th September, will see performances from national touring Blues bands The Mentulls, Northsyde, Ben Poole and Chantel McGregor, who

share between them a total of six nominations in the 2015 British Blues Awards. Tickets are priced at just £15 for adults and £12 for under 14s, with under 5s going free. All of the proceeds from ticket sales go back into the running of the festival, to support the range of free events and the under 18s Blues Workshops. On Sunday 6th September and Saturday 12th September, free workshops for musicians under the age of 18 will be offered for vocals, guitar, bass, drums, woodwind and keyboard. These workshops are led by professional musicians and teachers to ensure a great experience for the young people involved. After learning about special techniques

involved in playing the Blues, the workshop attendees are given the chance to take to the stage and perform as a band in Newark Castle Grounds. For many of these young people, this is their first experience of playing live as a band and, year after year, both the musicians and their parents have reported back on what a great experience the workshops have offered. SPA, CAR AND SO MUCH MORE!

Arriving at Whittlebury Hall is as though you are visiting a stately home. Imposing architecture, immaculate flower arrangements and someone’s ancestors all over the walls, including personal letters written by Diana, Princess of Wales, to the then owner of the Hall.

ut that together with the vroom, vroom of racing cars heard in the distance, as we arrived, and it makes a venue that feels and sounds as though you are in the land of opulence! The Day Spa is separate to The Leisure Club, and boasts the largest Spa Jacuzzi (Hydrotherapy pool) I have ever seen, with 5 separate areas with different jets to soothe away the different aches and stresses each of us have. My favorite was the one with the jets that lifted and rolled you from side to side. 58

The Heat and Ice Experience, comprises of 3 steam rooms

slightly separated from the 2 saunas, and varied in temperature from pleasant warmth to the outright steamy! The 2 spa saunas also varied form warm to hot and the ice cave provided a much-needed relief from the dry heat, although neither if us were brave enough to try the ice bucket shower! A nice touch, are the printed instructions on the back of your days itiniery. I never knew that the caldarium is designed to cool you down a little and could be used in between the hotter rooms. Around the steam bath / Jacuzzi was a very well planned series of benches and seats, including heated marble beds, a warm heated bench and the foot spas.

Use Locally - Issue 29 September 2015 Treatments took place upstairs where there is a full set of treatment rooms, nail bar and a hairdresser. The entire ambience is of luxury and space and calm. My massage was excellent and the therapist quick to ensure that the pressure was exactly right. I hardly wanted to leave! Staying overnight is always the best way of visiting a Spa! We enjoyed a large spacious, club room, just perfect for the après spa nap, encouraging and enhancing the feeling of relaxation after our day in the Spa, so that we had to rouse ourselves to make it down to dinner!

The Leisure Club boasts a huge pool (maybe those racing drivers like to swim laps as well as drive them!), and is designed to resemble a Roman

Food is always one of the highlights of a Spa Escape, and Whittlebury Hall doesn’t disappoint here either. Dinner service is attentive and quick, and the food is delicious, with options for all palates, and
