Come and see some of the 95,000 objects in the serve collection in this rare opportunity to see behind the scenes of a working museum. Assistant Curator Kevin will lift covers and open boxes to show you art, social history, military history, archives and lots more, from Anglo Saxons, Romans and Victorians to the present day.

Civil War tour of Newark, including the Queens Sconce Newark Castle, Newark Castle Gardens, Castle Gate, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 1BG
The tour will begin at the bandstand in Newark Castle, where the reason Newark became known as 'The Key to the North' can be seen. You will then visit some of the buildings that played a part in the town's Civil War history and remain standing. You will explore some of the characters, such as Baron Dohna, Hercules Clay and Prince Rupert who were significant players in Civil War Newark. After making your way around the town you will head back to the castle to see where Scottish muskets and cannon left their mark, before heading along the river towards the Queen's Sconce. This fortification, built to defend the town from Parliamentarian attack is the best preserved 17th century earthwork in the country. The tour will take around 1 1/2 - 2 hours in total.

Discover more about this beautiful Georgian building and its classical architecture from pediment to piano nobile, and view the cells where prisoners were held in the 18th/19th centuries before transportation to Australia. Find their stall on Newark Market Place outside
Newark Town Hall...bring your children to draw the lion or unicorn on top of the building. Listen to a talk about the architecture of this amazing site. Or discover what prisoners ate with talks discussing prisoners who were convicted in Quarter Sessions held in the Town Hall Ballroom, and who were then sentenced to transportation to Australia. The two wings of the Town Hall were originally built as townhouses to be rented out although, in later years, the ground floors of one (now a café) was converted to the town police station, hence the cells. You can even participate in one of the exciting Edible England events that will consider the experience of guests who may have dined in a grand manner in one of the townhouses and compare it to the meagre fare of the prisoners held in the cells! Heritage Building Skills Demonstration and Participation Newark Market Place, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 1DU
This event is being especially put on by Nottinghamshire Buildings Preservation Trust and Newark Civic Trust, in conjunction with the High Streets Heritage Action Zone team at NSDC. A number of experts will demonstrate the skills required to maintain and repair historic buildings: There will be demonstrations of the skills and techniques required and the chance to get hands on with some of the skills. There will be stalls around the demonstration area related to the experts and the groups involved. The Mausoleum was commissioned by the 4th Duke of Newcastle and built for his wife Georgina when she died shortly after giving birth to twins. The building was designed by Sir Robert Smirke in the Neoclassical style and was completed in 1833. Visit the church to find out more about the life of Georgiana and the Duke, look upon her beautiful statue and talk to the team of dedicated volunteer stewards who are here to guide you. Newark Heritage Barge “Leicester Trader” Riverside Park, Tolney Lane, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 1BS
Research information about Trent size sailing barges built at Newark and life on board for families, especially children. During lockdown there has been a lot of work done to improve the displays and make them easier to understand. People often want to know about life on board for families and in the days of sail there could have been two families living on board a barge similar to Leicester Trader. Children have often asked where they would have slept so, a childrens "bed hole" has been recreated, using recycled material, which they can now try out.

Newark Masonic Hall Museum Masonic Hall, The Avenue, Newark,
Nottinghamshire, NG24 1ST Visitors will be able to see artefacts related to the history of the Masons in Newark, including regalia and objects related to past members of the Lodge.
Throughout the day there will be talks on the history of Masonry in Newark, mentioning notable local people who were Freemasons. These include; artist William Nicholson, whose regalia is in the museum, Colonel Sam Derry, organiser of the Rome Escape Line in WWII, and other local members, many of whom became Mayors of Newark. The talks will also include opportunities to see the temple and a tour masonic museum and masonic hall with an explanation given at each. Saturday 18 September: 10am – 2pm No booking required

Explore the tower, debtors dungeon and secret places inside Newark Castle and watch a short performance from the monk who tried to cure King John of his surfeit of peaches! This year Newark Castle is thrilled to invite people once again to explore its Secrets, after a long time away. The Gatehouse Tower, Undercroft, and Debtor’s Dungeon will all be unlocked and visitors will be able to wander through these spaces normally only seen during guided tours. Come and take in the spectacular view over the river which made this site a strategic location for a defensive stronghold (as well as a magnificent noble residence). Experience a slice of the punishment endured by medieval tax dodgers, and see how the Knights Templar who shared these accommodations left their mark. Cool off in the humble cellar of the Castle which was utilized in a variety of ways throughout its life, and due to the beautiful vaulted ceilings, currently serves as a

The exotic food history of Thoresby Park The Stonebridge Trust, Thoresby, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG22 9EP
Join us at Thoresby Park for a celebration of food history covering over three hundred years, from the nobility to the farmers who provided the food. Explore the Walled Kitchen Garden, try to spot the deer, and take a look into the past underground. Take a stroll to the deer park and learn about the game hunting history of Thoresby, finally finishing with a look at the kitchens and dining halls of Thoresby Hall, where the food was prepared and where the Earls Manvers would have eaten. Alongside this there will be the military history of the estate to explore, a chance to learn about the influence of Henry Repton on the landscaping of the parkland and an indulgent special menu created by the café to celebrate the food heritage of the estate.

Behind the Scenes of The Dean of Southwell's Georgian Residence & Garden. Take a guided tour of the Drawing and Dining Rooms of the Dean of Southwell’s Georgian Residence located in Vicar’s Court, with a glimpse of the downstairs servants working and living areas. Listen to live medieval and baroque music from ‘Sixteen Eighty-Five’. Visit the garden and displays by Southwell Community Archaeology Group, Southwell Local History Society and Potwell Dyke Grasslands.
