The Smart Time To Buy A Smartphone

Smartphones have changed the way we work and play, and even the cheapest ones are incredibly powerful. Phones such as Apple’s iPhone 5S, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 and Motorola’s superbly cheap Moto E deliver lots of bang for your buck - but is this the right time to buy one? The short answer is: that depends on what you want. If you’ve got to have the latest, greatest technology then it’s worth keeping an eye on the calendar. Apple tends to bring out new iPhones every September, so there’s no point in buying the iPhone 5S when the iPhone 6 is imminent. A Samsung Galaxy S5 is a safer bet, though, because 6DPVXQJ¡V Ă DJVKLS SKRQHV usually come out in the spring. It’s worth checking out sites such as techradar.com to see what’s incoming: there’s nothing more annoying than buying something cutting edge, only to see it superseded a few weeks later. Not everyone wants the latest technology, of course. Many of us just want a good phone for a good price. For that, the trick is to buy the previous version, so for example when the iPhone 6 comes out the price of iPhone 5Ses - and the 6

cost of associated contacts - will drop. The more recent the phone the more of a premium you’ll pay for it, and the more pricey the contracts will be - so for example HTC’s FXUUHQW Ă DJVKLS WKH +7& 2QH M8, is a great phone, but it’s VLJQLĂ€FDQWO\ PRUH H[SHQVLYH WKDQ +7&¡V HDUOLHU Ă DJVKLS WKH +7& 2QH There’s another reason to pay attention to the calendar, and that’s if you’re planning to trade in your old phone. If you’re trading in an iPhone 5 you’ll get more for it before the iPhone 6 comes out than afterwards, and it’s a similar story for other high-end smartphones: you’ll get a better price before XSJUDGHUV Ă RRG WKH WUDGH in sites with their existing phones. It’s worth shopping around, though: for example, at the time of writing Carphone Warehouse is offering an extra ÂŁ100 on top of any phone’s trade-in value on certain new phones. If you want the best value for money it’s a very good idea to eschew Apple and high-end Android devices and look at alternatives. There are stacks of very good Android and Windows Phone smartphones, and in many cases you can pick them up for a fraction of what you’d pay for a similarly

powerful iPhone or Samsung device: for example, while a Samsung Galaxy S5 starts at around £99 up front and £33 per month for a basic contract, WKH UDWKHU QLIW\ +7& 2QH LV IUHH on a £25 per month contract. If you’re going to have your new phone for two years, that’s a big saving. It’s a similar story with Windows Phone smartphones. Nokia’s Lumia 1020, a 4G phone with a fantastic camera, is free on contracts costing £25 and up; if all you want is a basic smartphone the simpler Lumia 520 is just £7.25 per month with no up front cost. There’s another factor you should consider, and that’s whether your current contract entitles you to an upgrade. Many pay monthly contracts do, usually after 18 months to 2 years, and such upgrades can cut the cost of getting a new phone (although it does mean signing up for another long contract with the same provider). Don’t assume that’s the best deal, though. As with most purchases, it pays to shop around. Images left to right:Samsung Galaxy S5, iPhone 5S, HTC 2QH 1RNLD /XPLD

DAY NURSERY If your children could choose for themselves where to go, for daycare, what would be important to them? Would it be to do with the level of training that their carers may have so as all daily routines and even emergencies could be dealt with not only efficiency but with care and love?

no more because Serendipitys Day Nurseries are the next best thing. Started in 1998 the nurseries provide a solution to care that Kelly & Matt, the owners, discovered as a problem when their own children needed day care.

Use Locally - Issue 15 August 2014 They wanted a high quality nursery at affordable prices. Surely that couldn’t be that tall an order? Unable to find something for their own children, they started their own and have grown it to 4 nurseries across Balderton, Appleton Gate Newark, Bingham & Cotgrave. Their aim from beginning to this present day has always been to provide premium childcare at affordable prices. Their ethos and passion to put children first and ensure every child is given all the help necessary to reach their full potential has created a positive environment where children thrive. Children are happy and stimulated through different learning opportunities on a daily basis. The difference of the family run nurseries, is the attention to detail and the high level of care offered. The nurseries do lots of work within the community and also partnership work with parents. Each nursery can set goals with parents to ensure they all work towards the same targets. Every 6 months, parent questionnaires are sent out for feedback from parents to see how improvement can be made. Committed to investing in their own staff, all staff attend the Serendipitys Training Programme and are required to do a minimum of 3 courses a year, to improve practice, everyone is able to attend training, Serendipity staff are highly qualified, ranging from the early years professionals, to some with qualified teacher status, this level of knowledge shows in the quality of care, and this is reflected by the low

level of staff turnover – in an industry where staff turnover is usually high. Staff follow a behaviour policy based on praising the good and ignoring the bad, this is also passed onto the parents so as all adults work together One of the staff is an ex Ofsted inspector, who works across the 4 nurseries & oversees the education provision to ensure education within the nursery environment is of the highest standard. There is also a specialist childcare coordinator who works with them, with a high level of knowledge so the level of care is there every single day. Feedback amongst staff across the nurseries is high so games and ideas are quickly shared between nurseries, and there are also systems for feeding back the information from training. The day is a mix of child & adult led activities, with lots of outdoor as well as indoor experiences. Child led activities means staff have to be creative to work in the way that the children lead, so as a

game of dinosaurs may quickly develop into an educational and fun opportunity to go outside or make dinosaur sandwiches or do dinosaur puzzles, all led by the children to make it a fun learning opportunity. Games flow inside and outside as the children do what they want to do. Examples of the morning routines are a “Wake & Shake” every morning often held in public places to encourage the community to join in. Then there’s the “Doughs Disco” - using dough to physically roll it, shape it, in time to the music. Boys seem to like this far better than the Wake & Shake & it helps to develop muscle coordination and to learn to express themselves to the beat of music. There is a commitment to teaching and familiarising the

children with the basics of life skills, from older children buttering their own toast at breakfast, to placing an ironing board in the nursery so the children see everyday items of furniture during the day as well as at home. Emphasis is placed on helping children to become school ready and to encouraging independence. Pre school children can start to help out with younger children at lunchtime. Even at this age the importance of promoting healthy eating, fitness and exercise is apparent. A football coach comes in once a week in each nursery, to promote exercise! And on top of that there are even free French lessons! The Nurseries are also very

keen on hosting local community fun days with other organisations to bring together all manner of things for the children to access. Beavers, Brownies etc so as the children can look forward to getting involved in other community clubs as they progress. Children go to visit the local Care home, to sing carols at Christmas and occasionally through out the year, other events are l Inter nursery family football day l Grandparents day l Dads day l Mothers day - Encourage dads to come in to make gifts with the children for mothers day l Free Family Fun Day – held every year for all the nursery parents and their children. l Charity fundraisers l Bingham nursery holds anti natal classes in the evening.

Maybe the best recommendations of all should come from parents themselves: Parent’s questionnaire 2014 ‘Your staff are a huge credit to you. I couldn’t be happier to drop my son off to such a wonderful place’ ‘I feel Serendipitys gave my son a great start in his Pre-School days which meant he was well prepared when he started school. Thank you. We will always recommend this nursery to others’ ‘Me and my wife are very happy and grateful for all your support, help and hard work. We haven’t had any bad feelings having been with you nearly 2 years and I’m sure I can recommend you as a company and as a lovely team who support parents.’ ‘Oscar loves coming and is very happy at nursery. I have never felt so happy and reassured about leaving him as I have leaving him with the staff at Serendipitys.’ ‘I would recommend Serendipitys to friends (and have done). It’s a great place where I know Lila is safe, happy and learning.’ Parent’s questionnaire 2013 ‘Overall a truly wonderful establishment in which children can learn and flourish safely and securely but fun.’ ‘Serendipitys is a fab nursery and I implicitly trust the staff. I have no worries or issues all thanks to the brilliant staff.’ ‘We wouldn’t have stayed with Serendipitys 6+ years if we weren’t happy’

So if you or anyone you know are looking for a nursery that is passionate about offering the highest standards of care and attention at an affordable price, please contact Anna, nursery manager at Newark, on 01636 613829. Or you can pop along anytime! 10

Danube Restaurant We popped in to the Danube restaurant on Castle Gate, one Friday lunchtime, and left feeling as though we had made new friends and had a scrumptious lunch. The Danube is owned and run by Ramona Holland, a very gracious hostess, instantly putting us at our ease and ensuring we felt as though we were pampered and cherished. That phrase about being no strangers only friends we haven’t met yet, certainly fits the bill with regard to the hospitality at Danube. But don’t lets get hung up on that, after all the main reason we visit a restaurant is all about the food, and you wont be disappointed here either. Using the finest locally sourced ingredients, Ramona cooks all the dishes and makes sure that each one is so tasty, that even though you are absolutely stuffed, you can’t resist wanting more. We started with Crab cakes – which were heavenly, and Whitebait – crispy and light. Followed by the slow roasted pork, which was to die for – I don’t think I have ever tasted pork done that way and so absolutely melt in the mouth delicious – and I don’t give that accolade out lightly! that I was tempted to ask my mum to

swop, but that wouldn’t have been fair! I ordered the Sea Bass, which was gorgeous and thoroughly enjoyed that! Mum had dessert – the apple and frangipani tart – yummy! While I finished with cappuccino. We were boring on the wine front and didn’t have anything other than water, but the wine list looked good and would be wonderful if you wanted to accompany your meal with a little something. As I was driving I decided against any alcohol. We were waited on by Benjamin, who served us with the right amount of attentiveness and care and wasn’t intrusive,- a fine art ! The white linen tablecloths, with the hand-embroidered runners were lovely table settings and the blues and turquoise colours around the restaurant certainly put you in mind of the Danube River. However the icing on the cake is the friendliness here, Ramona makes sure that she talks to each table personally, to make sure your experience is everything it should be – and it was! The only thing lacking, was by the end of the meal I wanted my new friend to sit and enjoy a coffee with me, such is the warmth of Ramona’s welcome!

So if you are looking for a new best restaurant in Newark, then look no further ….you don’t have to go to Eastern Europe to visit the Danube! Booking advised tel 01636 610661 25 Castlegate, Newark, NG24 1AZ. www.danuberestaurant.co.uk 12

The Hot Spot for Cool Families this Summer The hot place for families this year is the East Midlands Chilli Festival being held at the Newark Showground NG24 2NY - 16th and 17th of August. A great family event for chilli, non-chilli lovers, we already have an exciting array of stalls, including an impressive list of East Midlands and UK wide artisans, street food and drinks vendors. There is something for everyone. During the two days, entertainment will consist of East Midlands bands, competitions and demonstrations, whilst on the Saturday evening there is a music festival. For the chilli lover we have a

chilli eating competition on both days and also on the Sunday a chilli cook-off – winners of which will receive £200 and entry into the National Cook-off finals. Artificial Sweetener The Hidden Dangers If a product is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and composed of natural ingredients, would you assume it is safe to consume? If the same product is an artificial sweetener, would you assume it helps control your weight? Millions of people use aspartame, the artificial sweetener known as NutraSweet™, with these assumptions in mind. Foods with Aspartame Aspartame can be found in over 6,000 productsi (often “sugar-free” or diet products). However, aspartame's tainted history of approval and potentially toxic ingredients cast serious doubt on the safety of this sugar substitute. Furthermore, aspartame may actually increase your appetite and risk for weight gain. While the FDA approval may signal the green light for safe consumption, 85 percent of all complaints registered with the FDA are for adverse reactions to aspartame, including five reported deaths. A closer look at the unscientific studies, suspicious approval methods, and its harmful ingredients, reveal the hidden dangers of this artificial sweetener. In reality, aspartame poses a public health threat. Aspartame Side Effects The components of aspartame can lead to a wide variety of ailments. Some of these problems occur gradually while others are immediate, acute reactions. Aspartame is made up of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. The latter has been synthetically altered to carry a methyl group, which is responsible for aspartame’s sweet taste. The phenylalanine methyl bond, called methyl ester,

allows the methyl group on the phenylalanine to easily break off and form methanol. In fruits and vegetables, methanol

is bonded to a fiber called pectin that allows it to be safely passed through your digestive tract. However, in aspartame, methanol is not bonded into anything that can help eliminate it from your body. Once inside your body, the methanol is converted by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) enzyme into formaldehyde, which can wreak havoc on your DNA and sensitive proteins. All animals, except humans, possess the ability to break down methanol into formic acid. Why Don't We Hear About These Aspartame Dangers? The reason many people do not hear about serious reactions to aspartame is twofold:

Lack of awareness by the general population. Aspartamecaused diseases are not reported in the newspapers like plane crashes. This is because these incidents occur one at a time in thousands of different locations. Most people do not associate their symptoms with the long-term use of aspartame.

A few of th e many dis orders associated w include the ith aspartame follow l B irth Defects ing: l C ancer (Brain Cancer) l D iabetes l E motional D isorders l E pilepsy/Sei zures

For the people who have killed a significant percentage of their brain cells and thereby caused a chronic illness, there is no way that they would normally associate such an illness with aspartame consumption. How aspartame was approved is a lesson in how chemical and pharmaceutical companies can manipulate government agencies such as the FDA, "bribe" organizations such as the American Dietetic Association, and flood the scientific community with flawed and fraudulent industry-sponsored studies funded by the makers of aspartame.

Porsche Macan By James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk

Porsche is set to bolster its position as market leader in the premium SUV sector with the launch of this, its new mid-sized Macan. An impressive range of engines, stylish exterior design and the German marque’s typically upmarket interiors all feature, but will this suave sports utility vehicle carve out a market for itself quite like the &D\HQQH" :H ÀQG RXW What is it? Porsche will tell you at great length that the new Macan is not a downsized, shrunken version of the Cayenne SUV. They’ll gladly regale you with tales that the Macan’s shape takes great inspiration from the 911 and the 918 hypercar. They’ll even let slip that during the Macan’s testing regime, the 911 was used as a benchmark for the results. The fact is, however, the new Macan is based – loosely, it must be said – on the Audi Q5 and is a new entrant into the hugely SURÀWDEOH DQG SRSXODU FRPSDFW SUV sector. It expands Porsche’s SUV range by 100 per cent and, judging by the larger Cayenne’s sales history, 22

it will sell by the bucketload. What’s under the bonnet? One of the reasons the Cayenne has proved such a hit for Porsche in the UK has been the choice of engines – and the Macan is no different. There’s the option of a 335bhp 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged petrol or a 254bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel. What with its 143mph top speed and combined fuel consumption of more than 44mpg, the latter is predicted to take 60 per cent of UK sales. The range is topped off with the 394bhp, 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged Turbo – it’s ludicrously fast, but doesn’t put the lower powered V6s to shame as they are equally punchy. There is, however, a fourth option. Porsche will sell you one with a 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder unit pushing out 234bhp. Badged just ‘Macan’ it’s order-only and isn’t set to be a big hit here in the UK. What’s the spec like? For now at least, the range is simple. Both the petrol and diesel Macan S cost ÂŁ43,300 and (surprisingly for a Porsche) FRPH ZHOO VSHFLĂ€HG ZLWK DQ electric tailgate, part leather/ part alcantara upholstery,

dual-zone climate control, MP3 connectivity and 18-inch alloys. The Turbo at ÂŁ59,300 adds 19-inch wheels with red brake calipers, sat nav, Bose sound system, leather upholstery with electric front seats and alcantara roof lining. There is of course a healthy options list which includes such pleasantries as Porsche’s PTV torque vectoring system (ÂŁ1,012), self-levelling air VXVSHQVLRQ Â… DQG D Ă€UVW for the compact SUV sector) and the Sport Chrono Package (ÂŁ728). All come with Porsche’s excellent seven-speed PDK automatic transmission. Any rivals? The Macan’s chief rival is the hugely popular and superstylish Range Rover Evoque. There’s also the BMW X1 and the Audi Q5 but none are as sporting as the Macan. That’s a privilege you have to pay for though. What’s it like to drive? All that marketing hype about WKLV EHLQJ WKH Ă€UVW VSRUWV car compact SUV is true ² LW¡V D Ă€QH KDQGOLQJ WKLQJ The steering is as crisp as it probably could be and thanks to 90 per cent of the car’s power being pushed to fat

tyres at the rear, it’s wellbalanced, too. It rides well and even when Sport and Sport + modes are prodded, the ride LV ÀUP EXW QHYHU XQEHDUDEOH The Turbo is deeply impressive and will reach 60mph in just 4.6 seconds. But the Turbo is really for the downsizing Porsche enthusiast. There’s no doubt the Macan will appeal to conquest customers and they’ll be more than happy with the Macan S in either petrol or diesel. The former has a lovely dainty-ness to it and has more than enough power. But it’s the diesel which is, obviously, the best all-rounder. It has more than enough power and performance and it won’t break the bank... too much. The Verdict Just over a decade ago, Porsche caused quite some controversy producing its ÀUVW HYHU 689 7KH &D\HQQH

wasn’t what you’d call pretty but it successfully married true Porsche handling in a more user-friendly and everyday package. The new Macan takes that to even greater levels. With ample seating for ÀYH DQG ORDGLQJ space of 1,500 litres when the seats are folded, it’s a practical proposition. Its smaller dimensions make it far more agile on the road and it genuinely feels sporty to drive – think of an upscaled, four-wheel drive Boxster and you wouldn’t be too far wrong. It’s even rather good looking in our eyes. There’s no reason why Porsche won’t have a ball with this car. In our opinion, you’re looking at Stuttgart’s new UK best-seller

Flexible Working Requests:

CHANGES From 30 June 2014 changes have been made to an employee's right to request flexible working arrangements. Like all employment law changes there is a myriad of things for employers to think about but with preparation, handling flexible working requests need not be a daunting prospect. Developing the right policy and procedure can assist in maintaining a good employee / employer relationship and make the implementation of these new rules much easier for all.. The right to request flexible working previously only applied to employees with children under the age of 17 (or 18 if the child is disabled) and certain carers. Now all employees have the right to request flexible working if they have worked for their employer for more than 26 weeks at the date the application is made. Only one application can be made in any 12 month period but be aware, those who have been employed for less than 26 weeks, agency workers (with one exception) and office holders do not have this right. Employees must put their request in writing and employers should complete the process within 3 months of receiving the request. An employer now has a duty to consider all requests 'in a reasonable manner' but has the right to refuse the request for business reasons. Under the Employment Rights Act 1996 businesses can refuse an application due to the burden of additional costs, the detrimental effect on the ability to meet customer demand and the inability to re-organise work among existing staff. Flexible working requests can be made because the employee wants to job share, change their hours or work part-time but for the employer they need to be mindful about how they deal with such requests. Having a policy in place that complies with the legislation will help employers and indeed their staff.

Self Assessment Tax return

A DAY

Help with your accounts, book keeping and payroll by qualified friendly professionals Your very own personal accounts department costing far less than you would expect. Ring and see how much time and money we can save you. We provide:l Book-keeping and Management Information l Payroll Services l Year End Accounts and Tax Returns l AAT Qualified and Licensed.

There are many different types of tax’s to be considered when running a business, many different people have to fill in a self assessment tax return for a myriad of different reasons, here is just a few of the more common ones. Self Employed people must complete a Self Assessment Tax Return: This is to tell HMRC the amount of profit you have made in a financial year and the tax due on this profit. Your personal allowance is deducted from this profit and then tax and NI are calculated. This can also apply to renting out a house, a room in some circumstances or any other source of income other than being employed. It is most important that if you do have alternative income that you let HMRC know and fill in this tax return once a year. We have had clients who genuinely did not realise that this was the case, if you are one of those people I recommend that you let HMRC know and sort this out, if HMRC find out first you could be in serious trouble. HMRC can decide on the penalty charge these days by looking at the circumstances of the problem. If they believe it is a genuine mistake and has been rectified by the tax payer the penalties can be considerably less than if they believe it was avoiding paying tax or avoiding the problem. Interest is also due on unpaid tax. You can also claim mileage against your tax and expenses that you pay personally such as subscriptions that are purely business or work related. Regarding mileage if you claim mileage from your employer and you get paid less than .45p per mile you can claim the difference against the tax that has been deducted from your wages by completing the self assessment tax return. The easiest way of submitting is online, the HMRC web site is very good and quite easy to use, it will even calculate how much tax you owe.

One of top 10 reasons used to HMRC for not submitting tax return on time. ‘My husband told me the deadline was 31st March and I believed him. (Leicester hairdresser)

Finance Going to University? Here’s How to Manage Your Money By Ann Haldon www.cornerstonewebcontent.com If you are off to university in September, your head will be full of worries and excitement about living independently, studying, and how to manage life in a new city. It might be a little overwhelming at times, but with forethought and planning you can organise your money and get to grips with the ÀQDQFLDO VLGH RI OLIH Managing money is often the biggest concern for new undergraduates, but the trick LV WR NQRZ \RXU ÀJXUHV VHW D basic budget where you can, DQG VWLFN WR LW 2QH RI WKH ÀUVW decisions to make though, is which student bank account to open.

Budgeting tips Budgeting is simple once you get into a routine. It just needs commitment, and an awareness of how much you DUH VSHQGLQJ 7KH ÀUVW WKLQJ to do is calculate the total of your maintenance loan and any grants, wages if you intend to work, and any money from your parents. Then make a list of regular bills, such as food, electricity, insurance and books. Also factor in birthday and Christmas expenses, and the cost of running a car if you have one. The money left over is disposable income, but you need to make sure you don’t overspend. The main objective is to live

within your means rather than splurging all your money at the start of term. Divide the maintenance loan over three months to budget for living costs, and you are halfway there.

Knowing the difference between ‘good debt’ and ‘bad debt’ Knowing how to use credit cards effectively is an important part of managing your money at university, as the temptation to spend without thinking can be overwhelming at times. The important thing to note is that only paying the minimum amount off a credit card each month allows the interest to build up, and makes it LQFUHDVLQJO\ GLIĂ€FXOW WR SD\ off what was originally a manageable amount. Paying off the total amount owed at the end of each billing period gives you interest-free credit for a very limited time, but go beyond this timescale and you could be hit with huge rates of interest. Paying for higher education is an investment, and remains a popular choice even with the recent increase in tuition fees. You don’t need to be cashstrapped at university or debtridden when you leave – just make sure it’s memorable for all the right reasons.

Children’s Bereavement Centre The Children’s Bereavement Centre is a Newark based Charity first established in 2002. We are a unique and special place where children (aged 3-18) and their families who are affected by terminal illness, death or the divorce or separation of someone close can access the support and guidance that they need. Our service is available to anyone who lives in Nottinghamshire and parts of Lincolnshire. As well as our Bereavement Centre in Newark we also provide outreach support in Mansfield and Southwell and it is our aim to provide further outreach services by the end of this year. Although it is part of life the terminal illness, death, divorce or separation of someone close can be a distressing and overwhelming experience for anyone, especially a child. Children’s reactions depend on their age, maturity and understanding of what has happened. Adults often try to protect them from their loss or are unsure how to tell them. We are here to offer the professional support they may need. Each child is unique and we provide individually tailored support to meet their needs including play therapy, filial therapy, pre-bereavement family support, peer group support, bereavement camp and workshops and activities.

annual cost for this is over £180,000 per year which I am sure you will agree represents great value for money for the services and support that we offer. This financial year ending April 2015 we have a shortfall of £66,000 and need to secure funding to continue to offer these services and improve the lives of our children and young people facing life changing loss and bereavement.

YOU CAN HELP TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE:

SPONSOR A CHILD for just £150 a child will receive 4 sessions of specialist Play Therapy, One-to- One support or Counselling they need. This can be paid as a one-off donation or as a standing order of £12.50 per month, simply by completing a standing order form, available on our website. In return we will send you a certificate and an invitation to an annual thank you event. Alternatively any donation that you feel you can make will be received with grateful thanks. Change a local child’s future, give them the support they need at the worst time of their young life.

Each year we face a new challenge in terms of raising money to for our valuable service to survive in the tough economic climate. The

JGFitness recently turned VERY amateur bodybuilder, I have always liked achieving and chasing the seemingly impossible. As a former World No.1, National Champion athlete I have a never say die attitude. Having recently turned to bodybuilding I wanted to see how far I could really push my mental and physical barriers.

JGFitness is a brand within the health and fitness industry centred on raising awareness for and supporting athletes of any sporting discipline with disabilities. Established in 2012; at JGFitness we work tirelessly to support athletes with disabilities within a very mainstream orientated industry in a variety of ways, they include; • Athlete Exposure: Getting recognition, funding or sponsorship in sport is very difficult so we do everything we can to try and promote athletes through our website (www.jgfitness.co) and all of our social media platforms. • Networking: We provide athletes with practical and invaluable networking tools in an attempt to bridge the gap between athletes and sporting governing bodies or federations in a hope to increase participation within disability sport. • Bespoke Training & Nutritional services: Providing athletes with bespoke training and nutritional services to help aid performance. • Campaigning: Here at JGFitness we campaign to increase disabled athlete participation in mainstream dominated sports, bodybuilding being a prime example. Since launching we have been campaigning for federations to include disability categories within their shows. Slowly but surely federations are starting to co-operate with the help of the athletes themselves, 3 bodybuilding federations have embraced the concept with the inclusion of disabled participants and disability classes within their respective shows.

• Sponsoring Events: Following on from the campaigning aspect of our company, JGFitness as a brand will be sponsoring the disability class of an upcoming bodybuilding show ran by Pure Elite in November 2014, we are committed to supporting the growth and evolution of disability bodybuilding in the UK, this is something we base our company ethos around and something we are extremely proud of. We are looking to support events in the future and help showcase disability sport as it deserves as much recognition and support as so many mainstream sports receive. The JGFitness team Ran solely by Boston based Fitness instructor and Cerebral Palsy “Sufferer” Josh Goodfellow. “CP is a disability that I was presented with at birth, after being 10 weeks premature, it’s a condition that affects the mobility and function of my limbs, despite this my mind-set allows me to achieve things that otherwise would be very difficult. As a form athlete and

I created JGFitness as I was fed up of the lack of support and funding given to disability sports and their athletes, so JGFitness is there to try and offer a service to those who need it and bridge a gap and fill a void that is MASSIVE. Literally Athletes-Governing Bodies is how it is in most cases, hopefully JGFitness can be the in-between and continue to help those who need it. I have a 5 strong team of athletes, including myself, made up of people from all walks of life who all share 1 goal. Doing their upmost to provide a service to a very bespoke clientele, we have Personal Trainers that work with the disabled, a team GB sprinter with a disability and people who are as passionate as me about the brand and it’s ethos” As a team leader I couldn’t ask for a better team behind me. For more information on JGFitness and the work we do, please check out our website below.

Thorntons to return to Newark! Newark Post Office – Hallmark Newark There’s lots going on at Newark Post Office this August, just in time for their 3rd anniversary, Bob and his staff are relaunching with a large Thornton’s franchise following the closure of the Thorntons in the square – we cant do without our chocolate! Alongside the updating of the Hallmark card area and investing in a larger Yankee Candles range, the Qualatex balloon section is also being revamped a huge investment but as Bob said, “We think you’re worth it – to borrow a famous quote!” So we can cope with a little disruption commencing 11th August for a week, but not enough to stop us getting our necessities and definitely looking forward to the return of life’s little luxurys! The Shop & Post Office will be open as usual during the refit. In the meantime stop by and pick up your postal needs and hallmark cards and gifts. Bob, Jill and their staff will make sure you are well looked after and catered to! And I for one will be queuing up at the chocolate counter!

Easy Pickings In Your Garden By Annie Wilson

Expensive lawnmowers and garden tools, not to mention high end barbecues are valuable on the black market, particularly at this time of year. Why would an opportunist thief – and the large majority are - take the trouble to break into your property when there are easy pickings on the outside? Clearly you need to protect your possessions starting at the boundaries not just at the property. Fences and hedges are the ÀUVW OLQH RI GHIHQFH DJDLQVW uninvited guests so should act as an effective barrier. Keep them in good condition and make any repairs a priority. Spikes added to the top of walls and gates are good deterrents although perhaps not something you’ll want to use where you will be looking at them. Let Mother Nature lend a hand by using ‘hostile plants’ – ones that are spiky, prickly or very dense. Choose plants such as holly, pyracantha, berberis, rambling roses and blackthorn, particularly in the areas where it’s easy to access your garden without being seen. Early autumn is an excellent time to plant as the warm soil will help

46

to establish the roots. Protect the entrance to your property. If a gate isn’t practical, consider covering the pathways with gravel. Thieves don’t like to announce their presence and the sound of footsteps on gravel could be enough to put them off on the approach. Motion activated lighting and well lit paths and driveways are a necessity. Garages and sheds should have locks on their doors. A heavy duty padlock, along with a hasp and staple would be ideal, although a determined LQWUXGHU ZLOO VWLOO ÀQG D ZD\ ,I LW·V a concern then a metal shed should be considered. Valuable property that is kept outside should be protected in just the same way as other household belongings. Mark your possessions with your postcode and house number. There are plenty of ways to do this; engraving is good way of keeping your mark permanent. Photograph your property so that you can provide a good description should anything ever get stolen and to help aid LGHQWLÀFDWLRQ (QVXUH WKDW \RXU household insurance policy covers belongings kept in sheds and garages.

A one-off investment to make your garden more secure can reduce the risk of burglary and is worth considering. Although hooking up CCTV to protect your garden gnomes may seem excessive, it may be of use if you have valuable items in your garden. Other investments that can help are getting your house alarm extended to cover your shed and garage, or buying a separate alarm for any outbuildings. Although it’s impractical to put all your removable items indoors each night, some sensible precautions will protect your barbecue, statues, pot plants and garden furniture. Basically, anything that is movable, however heavy, is at risk. Out of sight is out of mind, so try to keep items away from public view if possible. Finally, there’s one thing that many leave outside that is just an open invitation to a thief: a key. If it’s hidden under a mat/ the bin/a plantpot etc it might as well not be hidden at all. Install a lock box in a discrete place in your garden. It would take a very determined burglar to take the trouble to hack into your lockbox when there are probably easier pickings in neighbouring properties.

7 Easy Ways to Save Money on Your Heating Oil With over 260,000 homes off the gas grid in the East Midlands, many families in our community use oil to heat their homes. If you’re on oil and looking to make a saving on your next order, check out our useful tips for smart, simple ways to cut down your costs! 1) Watch the weather Oil prices typically decline during spring and summer, when temperatures are high and demand is low. By topping-up your tank this summer, you can take advantage of these great prices and stay warm in winter for less. 2) Compare prices You might have a regular supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around, or using an instant, impartial 50

comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil. 3) Buy in bulk Instead of topping-up your oil levels on a regular basis, fill it up in one go to cut down on delivery costs and get a great bulk-buy price. 4) Order early Set a regular reminder, mark it on your calendar or simply plan ahead of time to beat the rush, avoid costly emergency orders and take advantage of cheaper delivery options. 5) Add an additive An inexpensive way to upgrade your fuel, oil additives prevent tank sludge build-up, improve overall efficiency and save you money by reducing expensive

maintenance costs, operating problems and boiler breakdowns. 6) Group buy Buying as a group is the best way to get a discount on your oil, but did you know that you can also do it online? Websites like BoilerJuice automatically group your delivery with others in your area, to help you qualify for group discounts every day of the week. 7) Spread the cost with a payment plan While payment schemes often mean an expensive contract with a specific supplier, signing up for a monthly payment plan with an impartial site gives you the ability to spread your oil costs, while guaranteeing you the best quote from a range of suppliers across the UK.

Home & Interiors Choosing & Using Paint

A quick lick of paint on the walls and woodwork will brighten and beautify any home, inside and out. But which type of paint should you choose? Our interiors expert Katherine Sorrell is on hand to help.

higher the sheen level, the easier the surface will be to keep clean, but the more any imperfections will show up. Non-drip emulsion, with a jelly-like consistency, is perfect for painting ceilings. Water-based eggshell has a low shine and provides a more durable, wipeable surface – useful for walls in hard-working areas such as hallways or playrooms. For kitchens and bathrooms, consider specialist paints that are scrubbable and resistant to both moisture and steam. Some contain a fungicide and can help with condensation problems.

You may be surprised to ÀQG WKDW \RX FDQ FOHDQ \RXU brushes with hot water and detergent after painting with modern glosses. That’s because solvent-based paints are gradually being phased out, due to their nasty chemicals. These days, the majority of wood and metal paints are waterbased.

Feel right at home with Lancaster Grange Care Home

Why not call in to our coffee mornings, which are held on the first Thursday of every month from 10am–12pm People always tell me they feel right at home as soon as they step through the door at Lancaster Grange, and that's music to my ears. After all, we pride ourselves on our genuine warmth and friendliness – it's all part of the first-class care and support that we provide to the people of Newark. We have a range of services and facilities for all care needs, including: • Dementia care • Nursing care • Activities programme • Respite and Daycare • Residential care • Beautiful gardens

If you fancy a look around our home, or just need a bit of friendly advice, give me a call on 01636 880 626
