Finance Credit Cards for the Stages of your Life By Ann Haldon With so many different credit cards to choose from, knowing which one is right for you often depends on the current stage of your life. Whether you’re a young adult just starting ZRUN FRSLQJ ZLWK WKH ÀQDQFLDO demands of a young family, or are approaching retirement, here are some of the features DQG EHQHÀWV WR ZDWFK RXW IRU

STUDENTS & GRADUATES Most student account ‘packages’ include a credit card for those who qualify, and generally offer an average Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of around 19%. Credit limits are unlikely to be more than ÂŁ500, but this is often all that is QHHGHG WR SURYLGH D Ă€QDQFLDO cushion. HSBC student credit card Offered alongside their student current account, you can make payments and view your balance online. Their representative variable APR is 18.9% - average for this type of card, with no annual fee payable. Graduate cards work in much the same way, often linked to a ‘graduate’ account, and with a similar credit limit and APR. A slight difference is that some banks offer the facility to transfer an existing balance over to your new graduate card at 0% interest for a limited time. Lloyds Bank graduate card Lloyds offer a limit of up to ÂŁ500 on credit cards if you are

a graduate current account holder. A selection of cards is available depending on your income as a new graduate, with some cards offering 0% interest on balance transfers.

YOUNG FAMILY Rewards cards Parents of young children may prefer to receive rewards and incentives from a credit card. These could include free travel insurance, commission-free foreign currency, free days out and money-off vouchers for meals at child-friendly restaurants. Tesco Clubcard credit card Currently the Tesco Clubcard FUHGLW FDUG RIIHUV ÀYH &OXEFDUG points for every £4 spent with Tesco, including your spend on petrol. You can also earn one point for every £4 spent using the card at other outlets.

Cash back cards Cash back credit cards come in handy if you can pay back the total balance each month. You need to read the small print carefully, however, as higher penalties often apply for missed or late payments. Santander 123 credit card Santander is currently offering 1% cash back in the major supermarkets when you use their credit card, 2% in major department stores, and 3% on petrol and transport.

Music & Freedom by Sir Mark Elder Sir Mark Elder, Music Director of the HallĂŠ, will speak at Lincoln Cathedral on September 5 on the subject of Music and Freedom. In his lecture, Sir Mark will present musical examples to illustrate the theme of Freedom in classical works; spanning work 18

from Verdi’s Nabucco to Beethoven’s Fidelio. Taking a different perspective, the concept of Freedom in relation to music performance will also be explored, and its importance in different musical styles through history.

A Fun Time at Sundown Adventureland WOW..... What an amazing day we had at Sundown Adventureland! It was a perfect day from start to finish. So much to see and do, from the Pirate Adventure, Angry Birds play area and the River Barrel Ride (this was my little boys favourite, along with the tractor ride) I loved the storybook village and the Yellow brick road ( took some lovely family photo’s here) Take your bucket and spade too, for the Captain Sand’s Play cove! Crash Landings was perfect for the children to run riot, this is a

massive indoor play area, which was also perfect for the adults to have a welcomed rest. We had a lovely picnic on the beautifully kept lawns with the lovely shady trees dotted around with plenty of picnic

benches too. One of the things I was most impressed by was NOT having to spend wasted time endlessly queuing for rides.......it was lovely being able to jump on and off rides, no time for the children to get bored, as we all know little ones don’t want to wait in queues! There was plenty of places to get that needed bite to eat or refreshing drink.....all very reasonably priced too! Lastly we visited the gift shop where we bought a souvenir to remind us off our brilliant day out. All in all a fabulous time was had by everyone!

Shrub & Grub – Off the beaten track and oh so worth a visit! Sometimes you find a place that you just have to visit again and again – Shrub & Grub is one of those places! I popped over last Saturday for lunch, to find a new seating area and also outside tables. On a glorious summer day we sat and enjoyed the views over parkland and watched gently grazing horses and Lincolnshire Reds, while savouring beautiful home made Spaghetti Carbonara. I couldn’t resist buying some Almond croissants and bread to take home for later! And had to have a wonder around the plants to see what’s missing in my garden! Prices are very reasonable on all the plants as well! I overheard someone buying Spelt bread and Alan happily

explained the process of making Spelt and why it is healthier than wholemeal – who knew? As before the food was delicious and the setting lovely, coupled with the gracious service from the ever lovely Nate and the charming Alan. Off the beaten track but oh so worth a visit – I cant wait till

Employing staff - no problem - or is it? We all know that our tax returns have to be in on time and if we don’t do that then there will be penalties. Penalties for late payment of tax, late filing of tax return and late notification of liability to pay tax. Any accountant will have horror stories to tell you. So you know you want to employ someone to do a job for you but you aren’t sure how to go about it. It’s not a problem, I’ll just get someone, tell them what to do, pay them and then when the job’s finished they can go and work somewhere else. If you received a tax return you wouldn’t just put it in the bin because you think it doesn’t apply to you – you would check it out. So the same goes when employing people, you need to check out what your legal responsibilities are and ensure that you do not break the law, as believe you me there are penalties – you only need to attend an employment tribunal to see what happens. Tribunal awards can be very expensive in time and money, with discrimination awards being unlimited, tax penalties somehow now seem small compared to this – could your Company afford to pay this out? As an employer you can’t ever guarantee that you won’t end up in a tribunal at some stage but you can take steps to minimise that risk. The first part of your plan to minimise this risk before you start to appoint each new employee is to make sure your advertisement isn’t discriminatory in any way. Have a good job description and a person specification which outlines what qualifications, skills, experience, knowledge and other attributes that you are looking for. Next comes the written offer, make sure the contract is unambiguous but also offers you the flexibility you may

need. It is a legal requirement that every employee has to have a Contract of Employment within 2 months of starting their job. Give consideration to which type of contract you want. Contracts have different clauses for permanent, part time, fixed term, casual, zero hours and agency staff. There are also special rules for employing family members, young people and volunteers. Use probationary periods in your contracts, 3 or 6 months is usual. Make sure you pay the national minimum wage. Review your policies and procedures to make sure they are up to date, sensible and that they work for you and make sure everyone knows about

them and follows them. It’s a good tip to make these policies non-contractual so that you can avoid a breach of contract. Remember you can be liable for the act or omissions of your employees when they are at work. Follow your policies and procedures and think carefully before you act, especially when you are having problems and dismissal may be a potential outcome. Identify any training your employees need and regularly review their performance. These are some areas where risk can be minimised. Keeping up with ever increasing employment law can be daunting. By Katherine Sorrell much of it, from dressers and dining tables to sideboards and writing desks, though whatnots and chiffoniers are rarely to be found in the modern home. Fabrics, too, were rather more elaborate than we are used to today, with a great deal of embellishments – though William Morris’s Arts & Crafts designs introduced a relative simplicity and have remained popular ever since.

It may not be the height of fashion, but there is much to be said for Victorian VW\OH ZKLFK LV FRQĂ€GHQW distinctive and eminently comfortable, says Katherine Sorrell Everything changed in the 19th century. From society to science, politics to industry, the Victorian era was a time of enormous transformation. Travel, too, became easier, DQG LQĂ XHQFHV DQG LGHDV IURP all around the world became increasingly important. The middle classes expanded rapidly, and their homes became the perfect vehicles with which to show off both their newly acquired wealth and their cultural savvy. The result? An interior style that was exuberant, eclectic and, quite often, downright over the top.
