Tax Planning for Owner Managed Businesses - That’s a Relief Owner managed businesses come in all shapes and sizes writes Simon Shaw of Duncan & Toplis.

Some of these were trivial and have been abolished but other very important reliefs remain. These include;

While OMB can stand for ‘one man band’, an owner managed business can also be a larger company employing many people.

• will you qualify for entrepreneurs’ relief and pay 10% tax when you sell your business? • will your spending on machinery obtain tax relief in full this year? • will you qualify for rollover relief when you replace a business asset? • will your spending on research and development qualify for enhanced tax relief?

One thing they all have in common is the need for tax planning and this will often include ensuring tax reliefs are claimed when the business or its owners are entitled to them. That sounds straight forward enough but when the office for tax simplification was set up to look at tax reliefs, they found 1,042 different types of tax relief in the system!

Making sure you claim all the reliefs you’re entitled to can be complex and the planning may need to start years in

advance, the benefit of the relief will make forward planning worthwhile. In particular many businesses are currently taking advantage of the generous tax reliefs available on research and development costs even to businesses not operating in industries traditionally associated with research and development activities. Getting the right professional advice early from friendly experts who care about the success of your business and have the tax knowledge and commercial experience to make a real difference will help you make the most of the many tax reliefs that are available.

SPOTLIGHT ON

London eye bespoke eyewear

Finalist in the Newark Advertiser Business Awards 2014 in the SUCCESSFUL NEW BUSINESS category.

There are some things in life that we just need to know we have the best quality & service for.....for me, it's eyes! So thank goodness that London Eye Bespoke Eyewear opened 2 years ago in Newark. Since opening, it quickly became apparent that I'm not the only one that sees my eyes as worthy of the best of the best. So much so that, this November, London Eye Bespoke Eyewear, have expanded to open in much larger premises on the corner of Chain Lane and the Market Square in Newark. This vision (pardon the pun) for bringing London into Newark encompasses not only an unparalleled choice of the latest technology of lenses, not available in other High Street stores, but also the highest level of quality and attention to detail in every part of the whole process. It’s as if Harley Street moved to Newark, but minus the Harley Street or London price tag, what a refreshing idea and we 8

don’t even need to leave the comfort of our local town! Paul Cotter, London Eye Bespoke Eyewear’s owner, started off in eyewear distribution, bringing designer lines such as Chanel into the UK. Following a meeting with Chanel about design, he helped design a whole new range for them, which were an instant success. When he moved to Newark, people often stopped and asked him where he got his glasses, and so London Eye Bespoke Eyewear became a reality. The frames are only part of the story though, as the technology behind the lenses are major factors in any purchase. If you have the wrong lenses, it’s almost like jogging in high heels! There’s no need to jog in high heels when the variety available is incredible, from office lenses, freeform multi surface lenses, and several

other types, utilising all the latest technology, some not available in other high street stores. There are over 100,000 permutations to make your bespoke frames the prefect fit. When you have the right lenses in your glasses, the clarity and comfort of being able to see clearly, perhaps no more headaches (we all know the ache from ill fitting glasses) or just being able to see with comfort and without pushing them up all the time, or sore ears, where they don’t fit correctly on your ear – suddenly all that irritability of ill fitting frames or poor quality lenses disappears. However, when we dress up either for work or to go out, how many of us put on our comfortable everyday frames? Actually a pair of glasses can be a wonderful fashion statement, I know a fashionista who has several pairs and wouldn’t be seen dead without her red power glasses at work. Its useful to have prescription

There will also be a monthly clinic held by Reflower, the celebrity's choice in wrinkle removal and facial sculpting. Helen has worked as a Collagen Practitioner for over 30 years opening her own company Reflower with her partner Terry in 2003. Helen originally trained and worked in the USA for the company that made collagen in the early 80’s and it was her job in England to train the doctors. By the end of the 80’s she was injecting full time and is the longest serving practitioner in the UK. For many years there was only collagen available as a dermal filler but now there are many more, some safe and many not so safe. Helen will only use those fillers that are completely biodegradable which means that over time they are excreted by the body. This has many benefits as they do not affect your health now or in the future and as you age you can determine the amount of correction to lines and wrinkles that you feel realistic… the fashion for bigger lips may look good on a young woman but can look somewhat strange on a 70 year old. Helen has appeared on TV demonstrating the use of various fillers and is often asked to demonstrate at exhibitions for the various pharmaceutical companies. Reflower also does acid peels, cosmetic needling, age spot removal and rehydrating treatments for the face, neck, chest and hands. Consultations are free and confidential although be warned, Helen can be very honest about what can or can’t 10

be done. Not only will your glasses make you look and feel fabulous, you could look younger and feel more vibrant after visiting them. The final specialist, renowned interior designer Ian Kay of No.16 Interiors (who has collaborated in the design of the London Eye Bespoke Eyewear shop), has a smart showroom upstairs on the first floor. It is the perfect place to drop by for a chat about your design needs and ideas, in relaxed, comfortable and inspiring surroundings. Top Ten Helpful Wedding Hints 1. Always book your venue and registrar together. 2. Research themes and decide on your style - ‘Vintage’ Style weddings are the current trend. 3. Compile a budget and stick to it, but allow a 20% contingency. 4. Book suppliers at Wedding Fayres to get offers and check out the quality of both the goods and services before you book. 5. Spend time visiting venues, both during the day and in the evening and see the venue at the time of year when you make the booking to double-check it meets your expectations. 6. Keep a Wedding Day Book / Diary and collect both your thoughts and samples to help you decide on your favorites. 7. Always ask for a supplier invoice and check Terms and Conditions for your venue. Make deposits and agree payment plans to spread the cost of your wedding as it is much better to have a quality wedding where you can spread the budget over a couple of years. 8. Taste, taste and taste – make sure you have a sample tasting of both your cake and menu before you make the final booking as you may want to make changes… It’s great to try first before you buy. 9. Keep a constant theme, if you go with a Vintage Style then pick a Vintage car not a new car… 10. Remember to enjoy your planning as it will result in a wonderful day for you and your family…..

News from the Tourist Information Centre Telephone 01636 655765 E mail: newarktic@nsdc.info www.newark-sherwoodc.gov.uk/tourism No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds, November! These are lines from the poem “November” by Thomas Hood 1799-1845. He lived in London which was always blanketed in fog and smog at that time of year in his day so the poem was very appropriate. November can be a gloomy, damp, misty month but there are things to look forward to. Look out for the bonfires around the district to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day around 5th November and please be safe with fireworks. The Palace Theatre has a great line up this month including Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee (remember them?) with their comedy and magic tricks on 7th, Joan Armatrading on her last major 26

tour on 8th and an evening with Pam Ayres following the publication of her new book of poetry ”You Made Me Late Again!” on 17th. The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan starring Bernie Clifton as Smee starts on 10th December and bookings are being taken now. See www.palacenewark.com to book online or telephone the box office on 01636 655755. The big Christmas lights switch-on in Newark is Sunday 30th November with a market, carol singing and food stalls in the Market Place. This is always the start of the Christmas build up and an exciting evening out for all the family. The festive season starts right here! Tours of Newark Castle continue right through the winter months on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and can be booked at

the Tourist Information Centre. For the little ones Santa’s Christmas trail at Rufford Abbey Country Park starts on 15th November. Also beginning on the 15th November, Santa will be in his grotto at the weekends there till 23 December. Browse for that special Christmas gift at the Winter Gift Market at Rufford 8th-9th and 22nd-23rd November 10am-5pm. For more information on what’s going on, theatres, country parks and much more during the winter months please call in and see us. We are open every day 10am to 4pm and will be pleased to help. New Tax Disc rules By Michael Pace As from 1st October 2014 it is no longer necessary to display a paper tax disc, including discs which have not yet expired. DVLA will still send a reminder to tax the vehicle. The down side is that vehicle tax will no longer be transferable, when buying a vehicle you will be responsible for taxing it before driving away. When selling a vehicle, you have a duty to inform the DVLA that it's sold. They will then cancel the tax from the end of that month and send you a refund. The buyer must inform DVLA and pay tax by phone or online. According to the Government, the new system is said to save DVLA up to £7m annually. In my opinion, the real reason behind the new rules is to make sure people register the change of ownership. If buying or selling privately you may wish to consider entering into an agreement with the seller that they will not notify DVLA of the change of ownership until enough time has passed to let you drive home. This will allow you a safe journey home without being prosecuted. Once home, you can inform the DVLA change of keeper details. If you are the seller, you’ll need to make sure you have the buyer’s full details before letting the vehicle go, and that you notify DVLA at the time agreed. If you are the buyer, the normal rules of insurance apply and you must be insured before you drive away. Should this not be followed the DVLA can fine owners £80 – reduced to £40 if paid promptly – on top of the tax owed. Those who fail to pay can be prosecuted and fined up to £1,000 in court. For any motor law queries please feel free to get in contact with me, I am more than happy to help. Michael Pace, Partner, Andrew & Co Solicitors, 01522 512123 michael.pace@andrew-solicitors.co.uk

Get Set For Autumn & Winter Are you worrying about keeping warm this winter? One of the most economical ways is to use your open fire, to warm the house through and keep yourselves toasty! Make sure you have everything in to keep the fire safe; a new fire grate and ash pan is a good way of updating the look as well. Fire grates run from 14” to 18’ and the look can be completed with a matt black or pewter coal bucket to sit beside your fire. One of the dirtier jobs is cleaning out the fire and an ash carrier eases this, alongside a new coalscuttle. Make sure the ash is completely cooled before cleaning and removal. If you have a stove, then make sure the glass rope and the stove are in good repair, and even give the outside of your stove a spruce up with stove polish, or heat resistant paint to keep your appliance feeling loved and performing its best. Hotspot stove products are perfect for this job. If your burner has tar or smoke stains, then a specialist glass cleaner can remove all this and keep it looking pristine and working at optimum level. A new log basket sitting beside your log burner will make both a useful addition and add to the charm of the fireplace. Just today there has been a snow warning for Liverpool. And this is the time to stock up with your snow supplies - sledges and snow gliders for those fun snowy days or rock salt & shovels for those slippery areas. Don’t get caught out as in previous years when stocks have run out due to excess demand caused by adverse weather conditions. All these products and more are available at Newark Paint & Hardware, (see advert) along with excellent advice and more …so don’t worry about having the right products for the job, simply pop down to Newark Paint and Hardware, opposite Northgate Railway Station and have a chat with John to make sure you get the right product, at the right price, for you.

Last week, a landlord who lives in Long Bennington, picked up the phone to discuss the rising property values in the Newark and surrounding areas. He owns a varied portfolio of rental properties, primarily in Newark and Grantham with one in Southwell, so it is interesting to compare the increase in property values around the area. Over the last 12 months in Newark average property values have risen by just over 8.1% from £143,450 to £155,100, a rise of £11,650 or £224 per week. When I looked at some of the surrounding areas, Grantham has had a slightly lower average increase in property values, at around £182 per week or 6.7% over the year. However, the surprise has to be Southwell, which has only had a rise of an average increase of around £110 per week (or 1.8% over the year). However, it was interesting to see that over the last five years whilst property values have impressively increased in Southwell by 7.9%, in Newark they have risen by 10.16%. However, one shouldn’t just look at percentages, because that lower rise in Southwell still means Southwell property owners have still outperformed Newark, as that 7.9% rise takes the average Southwell property up in value by £23,750; whilst the 10.16% in Newark is only a rise of £14,300 to the average Newark property. It is, nonetheless, a rise in all the town’s average property values which suggests the market is recovering steadily in our area, but especially Newark– good news for home owners and landlords alike. When considering this landlord’s buy to let portfolio, yields can be in the order of an average 4% to 6% per year, depending where you buy, so combine that with steady rental growth, excellent increases in capital values of the properties themselves and it could be a good time to invest in the property market in Newark as property values start to rise. If you would like some advice about buying to let, be you a landlord with a portfolio or someone thinking of investing in the rental market, please pick up the phone to me on 01636 345045 or email me at chris.gillon@cpgproperty.co.uk

The Best Christmas Gadgets For Him

Buying gadgets can be tricky: if you’re buying for a grown-up there’s a very good chance that they’ve already bought the gadgets they want. But don’t despair, because it turns out that there are lots of gadgetrelated gifts you can buy for the man who has everything. A good place to start is with a case. You can spend hundreds if you want something from a QDPH GHVLJQHU EXW ÀUPV VXFK as Tuff-Luv make really nice vintage leather Kindle cases for around £40. And of course you can get leather cases for other devices such as laptops and tablets too. If he hasn’t already got a tablet, there are plenty of alternatives to the all-conquering iPad and iPad Mini. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD (£89) is good for ebooks and movies, and a range of affordable Windows 8 tablets have been launched by the likes of Asus, Acer and Toshiba, all below £200. If he fancies himself as the next Jamie Oliver, Belkin’s Chef Stand and Wand (£29) is a smart gift idea. It’s a tablet VWDQG GHVLJQHG VSHFLÀFDOO\ IRU the kitchen, enabling him to see the recipe (or the tutorial videos if he’s using cooking apps or YouTube) without getting it covered in food. If he’s more of

an outdoor cooking type, iGrill’s range of smartphone-connected thermometers (from around £34.99) give him a new toy to play with while he’s burning burgers. One of the more unusual new gadgets we’ve seen is the PlayBulb, a bluetooth speaker that’s also an LED light bulb. The £59 device is controlled via an iPhone and Android app that enables you play music and, er, turn the light on and off. For sporty types there are stacks of gadget gifts, such as the Fitbit Flex activity tracker (£75), the Zepp motion sensor for tennis players (£129), Garmin’s Forerunner GPS watches (£89) and the TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Watch (£149). If you really want to delight a gadget fan, this year’s hot technology is the smartwatch - of which LG’s G Watch R is one of the nicest. The price hadn’t been announced as we went to press but the Androidcompatible smartwatch is likely to be keenly priced - not least because Apple has its own smartwatch, which is likely to be a big seller this Christmas. If he’s already shelled out for a smart watch, how about a drone? Parrot’s AR.Drone 2.0 (£224) is a smartphone-

FRQWUROOHG TXDGULFRSWHU D à \LQJ drone that can stream high GHÀQLWLRQ YLGHR EDFN WR WKH owner’s phone or tablet. There are drones to suit all budgets, from the £36 Quadricopter X4 to drones costing more than £600. Many bigger drones are designed to carry GoPro cameras, which are small high GHÀQLWLRQ FDPHUDV WKDW FDQ EH attached to almost anything. Our current favourite video, a YouTube hit, was made by strapping a GoPro to a dog’s collar and then letting it sprint down to the beach for a swim, but we’ve seen GoPros strapped to bike helmets, to remote controlled cars and even to musical instruments. Expect to pay from around £199. You don’t have to spend lots of money for a great gadget gift, though. The excellent Aeropress coffee maker produces brews that rival the world’s most expensive coffee machines, and you can pick one up - brand new - for around £25. Motoring

By James Baggott, CarDealerMagazine.co.uk

THE recent announcement about driverless cars heading to the UK got me thinking. Not about how nice it would be to have a snooze in the back of a long-termer as it cruised up the A34, dodging overtaking lorries as we go (although I admit that was my first thought), but more about the incredible advances in technology the car industry has made over the years… and, more importantly, the not so incredible. Few would doubt there have been some amazing leaps forward. Hybrid power plants, cars that you charge by plugging into your house, night vision, automatic braking to avoid low-speed crashes, airbags, Bluetooth, the list of helpful gadgets goes on and on. However, having spent a few weeks in my trusty 1987 Fiesta XR2, I’m starting to wish that list could be made a little shorter by un-inventing a few things. My rusty Ford is pretty basic – the radio offers a choice of Five Live, or no Five Live, the heater settings consist of hot, warm or a little less warm and the lowering of the windows exercises your entire arm, not just one finger. Jumping from that into a modern test car makes you realise there are a lot 60

of new gimmicks that should be consigned to Room 101. First, the electronic handbrake. Name one good reason why the electronically engaged anchor, which seems to take minutes to engage, should replace the good old-fashioned tug of a manual parking brake. It’s impossible to know whether you need to push the button to engage it, or pull it, whether you need your foot on the brake or not, and that’s after you’ve found where the manufacturer has hidden the blooming switch in the first place. Electronic assistance is often the root cause of the problem. Manufacturers seem intent on adding a charge to a function that really didn’t need it in the first place. Tailgates for example. Why do I need help shutting the boot – 10 seconds more slowly than I could do it by hand – when I’ve managed perfectly adequately for years? Then there are the cars that don’t open all the doors when you press the keyfob. Remote central locking was a godsend when it arrived, all doors popping open at the touch of a button. Why then, did a manufacturer decide that this wasn’t actually a good idea and

that one press should open the driver’s door only? That is not progress. Don’t worry, there are more. One-touch windows, for one that go all the way down when you hit the button. They’re brilliant. But why does it sometimes only work on the driver’s side? How much more would it cost to offer that on all windows? Pennies? And don’t get me started on fuel gauges. The number of times I’ve brimmed a modern car only to travel 50 miles and for it to still show full beggars belief. That is a gauge that is quite clearly failing at its primary objective. As soon as I leave a petrol station with the engine running I am, by the laws of science, using fuel – that usage, no matter how small, should register on the gauge. It’s either full or it’s not, right? And that’s not to mention the manufacturers that have done away with a gauge altogether and decided a few digital blobs are a fair representation of the fuel contained in the car’s bladder. Voice control that never works, or takes five times as long to execute a simple task that your finger could have done moments ago needs removing. I’d understand if the buttons that do the thing you’re trying to command with your voice were located in the boot, but they’re not, they’re less than an arm bend away. So, here’s an idea: Use your arm. Automatic lights that illuminate at inappropriate times? They can go. Rain-sensitive wipers that come on too late or not strong enough – get rid of

Use Locally - Issue 18 November 2014 them. My point is (and yes, there is one) we’ve made some incredible progress over the years but in an attempt to get one over the competition, car firm tech departments have been let loose to engineer things that don’t need engineering. There’s a lot to be said for simplicity. That’s why I’m just a little bit worried about selfdriving cars. You only have to picture a supermarket car park of the future – yummy

mummies engaging self-park and edging ever so slowly into a bay by the power of divine car brain intervention – to see the problems that may lie ahead. Yes, those cars may be finally parallel in the space, but judging by the time it takes to apply an electronic handbrake, how long do you think it’ll take to execute a reverse park? Whatever happens with driverless tech, I can see one good thing for dealers – and that’s the fillip it’ll offer

servicing departments. I don’t think the government, or insurers for that matter, will take too kindly to owners who miss annual services when the car is driving itself around. That’ll be great news for dealers who currently rarely see owners once the warranty period has expired. Maybe that’s why all this new tech is invented in the first place… to keep technicians busy. Once a cynic, always a cynic, eh?
