Some Like It Hot

Technology taking the expense out of heating your home

With summer a rapidly fading memory it’s likely that you’ve had the central heating on for weeks or even months. With energy prices constantly increasing, a few simple bits of kit can make a huge difference to your outgoings. One of the simplest changes you can make is to replace your boiler’s old timer with a modern digital programmer, such as Siemens’ RWB29. This £45 device enables you to set different times for weekdays and weekends, and you can set three different heating times per day. Installing it and any similar programmer isn’t a particularly GLIÀFXOW MRE DQG WKH H[WUD FRQWURO it offers can help reduce your heating bills. SPOTLIGHT ON

Gracegentle

Gracegentle celebrates their first birthday in style! Gracegentle celebrates 1 year of bringing style and chic to Newark. Denise Starkey, Grace Gentles founder and owner looks back on her first year of bringing beautiful gifts, home and garden accessories with a passion that is obvious when you visit the shop. It’s a boutique that smells divine when you enter and leaves you with feeling you have discovered a new friend and treasure. Grace gentle was Denise’s grandmother – effortlessly 8

elegant and with a genuine desire to make her family’s home beautiful in every way, Denise not only aspires to continue her grandmother’s ethos, but goes one step further and actually achieves it, not only for herself, but for her wide variety of clients too. Indeed it’s a near impossibility to visit and leave without a new treasure for yourself or your home. Its one of those places, where you think “that would be perfect for …. Whatever you choose, you can be sure that is it something that Denise has chosen herself, with the same attention her grandmother would have given to everything. Nestled beside adorable gifts, are home and garden accessories, quirky signs and plaques, cushions, mirrors, lamps, occasional furniture. For a more personal piece there are beautiful cold cast bronze sculptures of hares, hounds and cats, and a superb range of scarves, jewellery, and leather goods. Theres also hand-made greeting cards to go along with your treasures. "The feedback has been tremendous" Denise said. "People say it is a beautiful shop, and just what Newark needs." Gracegentle's Facebook page is full of praise from customers. "I love visiting Gracegentle." said one. "The range and quality of the items is fantastic and I love the amazing candles and oils - they smell divine." I know exactly what they mean! Denise has recently introduced a loyalty card that gives a discount off future purchases, for those customers who keep returning, and to reward new ones. It’s one of the ways

10

Denise honours Grace gentle by valuing her customers. Customers are also pleased to find pieces not available anywhere else in the area. These include contemporary jewellery from Dansk Smykkekunst, home accessories from Lene Bjerre, decorated scented candles and reed diffusers from Stoneglow, timeless leather goods from Bolla Bags and Tumble & Hide and the adorable cold cast bronze ornaments of hares, hounds and cats by Frith Sculptures. Not that the prices at Gracegentle are high, the attention to details ensures that stock is carefully chosen with an eye on both quality and value. "The image of the shop gives the impression that prices are high, but people are pleasantly surprised when they come in to find how reasonable things are," Denise said. When preparing to open Gracegentle, Denise spent hours researching suppliers and seeking advice on what to stock. In the end, she decided to opt for classic, timeless pieces that she would like to have in her own home. Her instinct proved right. Gracegentle is full of beautiful, stylish items that would complement any home. Many pieces are in natural colours and materials that look equally at

home in traditional or contemporary settings. Wood, glass, leather, silver and bronze feature strongly, as they have a timeless quality that is widely appealing. Denise is already choosing stock for the coming season, with one eye of the Christmas market, of

course. Although, as one customer put it: "It's an all-year-round shop, not just a Christmas shop." Next time you are in town, make time to visit and browse round the shop‌.you are sure to find something you just cant live without ‌.or something perfect for that special person. Gentlemen, let Denise guide you into a stunning gift for your lovely lady, one she will definitely thank you for this year!

Putting People’s Lives back on Track Over the past couple of weeks Andrew & Co has secured almost half a million pounds (£431,000) worth of compensation on behalf of five clients who had been injured in accidents which weren’t their fault. The settlements had varying degrees of value, but the outcome from all of the cases will have a huge impact on the lives of the people involved. £150,000 was awarded to an elderly and disabled widow who sadly lost her husband in a fatal road traffic accident. We spent just over three years working on the case for her due to complications surrounding the cause of the accident. But now this money will provide her with the much needed social care she requires for the rest of her life. A further £225,000 was secured for another client whose long-term health and future has been seriously affected by the impact of another road traffic accident. These cases had the highest value and highlight an important point for anyone affected by personal injury. Insurance companies will do their best to offer you a ‘recommended’ law firm to work with following a road traffic accident. More often than not you won’t get to meet them, nor will you receive the specialist advice and personal service Andrew & Co provides. Most people don’t realise they have the right to choose a solicitor to represent them as opposed to working with a generic law firm. Undoubtedly the local knowledge we have along with the specialist experience in personal injury law, helped us to win a considerable sum of money for our clients. We also secured a further £13,000 for a pedestrian who was hit by a stolen car after it mounted the footpath, £8,000 for a woman who suffered facial injuries and a fractured knee following a fall caused by a rocky paving slab in Grantham and £6,000 for a man in his 70s who was injured by the doors of a bus closing on him. Each incident was very different, but in personal injury cases we have to prove who is to blame and the experience we have is hugely beneficial in helping us to win compensation for our clients. As these cases all prove, choosing a reputable firm with dedicated specialist solicitors really does pay off. If you would like to talk to us and have been injured, please get in touch on 01522 512123 or email Michael.pace@andrew-solicitors.co.uk In order to receive a free half hour consultation please quote "Use locally". Is It Time To Part With Your Old Mattress? by Kate McLelland An old mattress is like an old relationship: worn-in and comfortable, with the odd uneven bit that you have learned to avoid. It may have been beautiful when it was new, but now you’ve ceased to notice the frayed corners, the sagging middle and the missing studs. Although it is comforting and familiar, your old mattress may not be giving you the good night’s sleep you deserve. Here are three common mattress myths that may deny you a peaceful rest: “My old mattress is comfortable because it has adapted to the way I lie in bed.” Unfortunately you can still feel comfy long after your mattress has lost its ability to provide your body with the proper support it needs. “The stiffness I feel each morning is due to too much exercise, or old age – or both!” It may simply be due to a mattress that doesn’t give you enough support. If you generally feel better in the morning when you’ve slept elsewhere, it’s time for a change. “My mattress is still under guarantee!” The warranty exists to protect the consumer from product

indicator of how long a mattress should be used. A mattress that has been LQ FRQVWDQW XVH IRU ÀYH WR seven years may need to be replaced. If it is time for you and your mattress to part company, how do you go about choosing a newer model? Pocket sprung mattresses have springs sewn into individual fabric pockets so your partner’s movement won’t affect your side of the bed. These mattresses can be costly but proved most popular in a survey conducted by the consumer association Which? Continuous coil mattresses are made from a single looped wire, while open-coil mattresses are made of VLQJOH VSULQJV À[HG WRJHWKHU by one wire. The springs move as one unit, so you are more likely to be disturbed by your partner’s movements at night. These mattresses are cheaper, but tend to wear out faster than those with pocket springs. Memory foam mattresses are good at relieving pressure on painful joints, but usually cost more than a sprung mattress. Memory foam is affected by room

reacts to body heat, it moulds to your shape. This reduces air circulation around your body, which makes the memory mattress feel warmer, but it may make it harder for you to move around at night. Latex mattresses are hypoallergenic and so can prevent fungi, bacteria house dust mites from accumulating. Latex is made from rubber so has natural elasticity, retaining its shape as soon as the pressure is removed. Mattress toppers: As the name suggests, a topper sits on top of your ordinary mattress to give you extra comfort and support, but it won’t help if your mattress has already begun to sag. Toppers can also provide a useful protective layer between the sleeper and full mattress in the event of night-time accidents or spills, however prices vary and some can be as costly as buying a new mattress. Remember, comfort, support and durability are key when it comes to buying a new mattress. It’s worth taking time to search for the right one, as your reward will be many years of blissful sleep. Onwards and upwards for dynamic estate agent Now Homes are fast approaching their fifth year as one of the freshest and most dynamic estate agents in Newark. Due to their continuing success, co owners Sallyann Buckley and Stephen Ferguson decided that now is the time to expand. With this in mind they have joined forces with new team member Jon Leigh, and have opened Now Rent. ‘As a well established Estate Agent in Newark we have regular contact with both buyers and sellers who have an interest in the buy to let market’ said Stephen. ‘We felt the time was right for us to build on the Now Homes brand and open our own lettings agency. This way we can provide both Landlords and Tenants with the same great value and excellent levels of customers service that our vendors and purchasers currently enjoy’. New team member Jon Leigh joins the Now team bringing with him over ten years of experience in the property sector. Having worked in both Estate Agency and Social Housing Jon is excited to be a part of the new venture. ‘This is the ideal time for us to expand and open Now Rent. The private rental market is

extremely buoyant with many customers currently choosing to rent for a variety of reasons’ said Jon. ‘We are seeing people on a daily basis who are either potential tenants or Landlords, so we are perfectly placed to meet their needs. Now Rent will carry over the same principles and practices as Now Homes, ensuring its customers the same customer focussed experience’. As co owner of Now Rent Jon understands the need for a ‘hands on’ approach and is committed to providing landlords and tenants with a

personal, one-to-one service. ‘Whether you’re a landlord looking to buy your first

property or expand your portfolio, or a tenant looking for a home, it’s essential that you deal with an agent who is passionate about property and passionate about providing great customer service. That’s what you will get as a customer of Now Rent’. Available 7 days a week from 8am – 8pm. All fees are VAT free – saving you 20%. A local, independent business providing a personal service. These are probably some of the reasons many people are taking the plunge and starting their own business. When deciding if working for yourself is the right thing to do there are many things to consider including: l l

Who will be my customers? How do I attract customers to buy my goods or services? How much should I charge? How much cash will I need to get started? What equipment will I need? What records do I need to keep? How much tax will I pay? Do I need to register for VAT?

Duncan & Toplis can help anyone taking their first steps to answer these questions and set off on the right foot. An initial free no obligation meeting is offered to explore some of these questions. Once your

business is up and running the team of experts at Duncan & Toplis can assist in a wide range of ways including yearend accounts, tax returns, payroll and bookkeeping. Contact Simon Shaw and his team on 01636 640 321 to find out more and to arrange a free initial meeting.

Life Begins Too Many Phish In The Sea ... by Kate McLelland Looking at my inbox, it’s a wonder that I’m not in serious trouble with a lot of people. “HM Revenue and Customs” emailed me several months ago and asked me to go through my tax return - attached to the email - and reply immediately. I ignored them. Then I received an email confessing to an “operational error” that meant I had overpaid my tax and was due a refund. I deleted it. It’s the same with my friends. They email me in crisis from various exotic holiday locations, but I turn my back on their desperate pleas:

“We were mugged in an alley by a gang of thugs on our way back from shopping. All our money, phones and credit cards were stolen and I’ll be grateful if I can get a loan of £1,750.” All emails originate from my friends’ actual addresses and are signed with heartbreaking messages such as: “All hopes on you, Joanna”. But I’m not a heartless millionaire, too rich to care. All these emails have been sent by criminals trying to get my money or steal my identity (or both). The generic term for these attempts at online extortion is “phishing”. We’re all so busy these days that it’s easy to assume the

Three Easy Ways to Save Money This Winter

Fuel bills are a major worry for all of us in winter. Prices go up but the need to stay warm remains, and it’s not just heating the house that’s the problem. Skyrocketing costs of petrol and IRRG GUDLQ \RXU ÀQDQFHV RQ D weekly basis, but there is a little cheer on the horizon. Below are three ways to help you make ends meet this winter. All are easy to implement, they just take a little thought and planning, so make a start now before the bad winter weather strikes.

Reduce energy consumption According to the Energy Saving Trust, savings of around ÂŁ300 a year can be made using cavity wall and loft insulation in an average semi-detached house. At the time of writing, British Gas offers free or subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation to eligible homeowners on mainland Britain. Even small measures make a big difference though, the result being a warmer home and reduced bills:

Energy monitors - These monitors let you know how much energy each appliance consumes. Most people quickly change their habits once they see the spikes in energy usage recorded by the monitor. Lighting - This is one of the easiest areas in which to reduce consumption. Energy-saving light bulbs, external light sensors, and switching off lights when not in use all help to keep down costs. Appliances - Freezers work PRUH HIÀFLHQWO\ ZKHQ IXOO DV GR ovens. Not only that, but you’ll save money buying and cooking food in bulk.

Halve grocery bills A little planning goes a long way when it comes to shopping. Preprepared menus and shopping lists are easy ways to reduce waste as well as save money. The ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ website has some useful tips in this respect, and offers advice for saving money on food. The main message is buy and cook in bulk. Cooking becomes less of a chore when you can just grab a home-cooked meal out of the freezer several nights a week. Late Sunday afternoon shopping trips are a revelation, when incredible deals can be found in the ‘reduced’ aisle if you time it right. This alone saves a huge amount of money over the course of a year. Cooking from scratch, making your own bread, home brew and wine all save money, and if results are good you can always give away your goodies as Christmas presents.

By Ann Haldon

Switch suppliers If you’ve never switched gas and electricity suppliers before, you could be in for a pleasant surprise. The biggest savings of around 5%-10% can be made when you manage your own account online and pay by direct debit. Suppliers like their customers to pay by direct debit as there’s less likelihood of default. It keeps their credit control costs down, and they earn interest on any overpayments you make during the summer months. To make sure you get the best deal: • Always read your own meter – don’t rely on an estimate from your provider • Don’t assume that dual fuel is always the cheapest way to buy • Use a price comparison ZHEVLWH WR ÀQG WKH EHVW GHDOV • Avoid pre-payment meters – the choice of tariffs available is very limited Saving money is often about changing your habits. Things like unplugging appliances and turning off lights are simple to do, and can save you hundreds of pounds over the course of a year. http://www.energysavingtrust. org.uk/Insulation/Roof-and-loftinsulation http://www.energysavingtrust. org.uk/Insulation/Cavity-wallinsulation http://www.britishgas.co.uk/ products-and-services/energysaving/home-insulation/freeinsulation.html http://www.energysavingtrust. org.uk/Electricity/Products-andappliances#computer http://england. lovefoodhatewaste.com/

Draught excluders - It’s surprising how much heat is lost through small gaps under doors and around windows – not something you’d always notice day to day. 42 Log on to our website: www.uselocally.co.uk

Handel’s Messiah sung by the Cathedral Choir Following on from the sell-out performance in the autumn of 2012, the boys, girls and men of the Cathedral Choir will once again be singing Handel’s Messiah in the cathedral on Saturday 22nd November 2014. Handel’s famous oratorio reflects on Jesus Christ as the Messiah, from the Old Testament prophecies to the story of his birth, passion and resurrection, culminating in his glorification and victory over

death. Since its first performance in Dublin in 1742, it has become a firm favourite with British choirs, and contains many popular melodies, in particular the Hallelujah chorus which never fails to bring audiences to their feet. The Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Aric Prentice, will be joined by the Lincoln Chamber Orchestra. The soloists this year will be soprano Kate Semmens, who is particularly

experienced in historic performances of Handel and his contemporaries; London-based alto Joe Bolger; operatic tenor Mark Wilde, who sings regularly with the Cathedral Choir; and bass-baritone Bozidar Smiljanic, a former Lincoln choral scholar. In the magnificent setting of the cathedral nave, this promises to be a delightful and enjoyable evening of music in the approach to Advent and Christmas.

Seasons of mists and mellow fruitfulness… I think and we can safely say that autumn is well and truly upon us, but October is a great time to get out walking or cycling after the heat of the summer has passed. The leaves are turning to beautiful shades of reds and oranges and there can be some wonderful bright sunny days to enjoy the great outdoors. There are lots of lovely circular walks in this part of rural Nottinghamshire and some wonderful parks and open spaces to explore too. You may have already taken your children to the popular play park and Queens Sconce at Sconce Hills in Newark but did you know that the park; set on the banks of the River Devon, is home to a Local Nature Reserve with acres of meadowland, woodland, grassland and an orchard, all open daily for the public to enjoy. Sherwood Forest is known all over the world, but not so well known and therefore quieter areas of the Forest are Sherwood Pines, Sherwood Heath and Vicar Water Country Park. Rufford Country Park is an ideal place for a day out walking. Set in 150acres of beautiful parkland with lakeside walks, formal gardens and even a children’s maze, it’s a perfect place to enjoy the autumn colour. If it’s peace and quiet you like from your walk, why not try one of the Nature Reserves in the area. Besthorpe Reserve is a haven for wildlife with a series of viewing screens and a hide to watch the wide variety of bird species. Also, Eakring Meadows and Duke’s Wood Reserves at Eakring are a great place to explore. Both Newark and Southwell have a good 44

variety of Town Trails which you can follow and find out about local history while you enjoy a gentle stroll. For more information on all the attractions and trails mentioned and for Ordnance Survey maps and other ideas on where to walk or cycle, call in to Newark Tourist Information Centre. We’re open all year round, seven days a week, 10.00am – 4.00pm. www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/tourism Or follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news. TANGFASTIC! Did you think I was talking about the sweets? Well there’s something even more delicious for grown ups (and kids!) in Newark! Peking Tang has risen above other buffet restaurants, with its delicious food and incredible cocktails. We sampled a delicious concoction made by Dave the manager, with apple & ginger, (non alcoholic), and that alone was enough to keep me going back for more. Whatever your preference, I’m sure Dave can find a cocktail with or without alcohol to suit you. The food is nicely presented, but the difference here is in the taste. Each dish was actually seasoned and full of flavour, unlike many of the other wanna be buffet restaurants. The variety of dishes was well thought out to complement each other, and it was the best sweet & sour chicken that I have had in a long long time. What a difference a chef that cares makes! Food should always be this

appetizing, but its not easy to find a restaurant that actually provides food that is. How lucky are we in Newark to have a restaurant that can provide this! The restaurant itself was spacious and there is a separate room for larger parties, I liked the layout of the buffet too as it was easy to get to and didn’t end up with queues at certain points. Desserts were enticing with a

chocolate fountain and a wide array of fruits and jellies plus cakes and other tempting sweets to sample. Its really easy to give a restaurant a good review, but I think the proof was in the eating here, as 2 days later I took the whole family back to enjoy a Sunday Buffet, and even my youngest, notoriously difficult to please, enjoyed his meal. Peking Tang is open for Christmas parties and for regular meals with friends and family, or special occasions. Prices are very reasonable, and service is just right. There’s a lift to get upstairs, so there’s no reason not to take the whole family. So what are you waiting for – best to book as Peking Tang is only going to get busier. And Another Thing by Tom Hughes I have a blended family. I don’t mean one night I went mad, chopped them all to bits with an axe then heaved their dismembered corpses into a giant Moulinex. What I actually mean is Sarah and I have four kids between us. And no, it’s not Piccadilly Circus in our house, it’s Grand Central Station.

I sit back down in my coat. Ollie (the dog) sees that I am now wearing my anorak and trots off to retrieve his lead. He drops it at my feet and gives me his, “Well, come on!” look. We make it to the front porch just as the heavens open. “I’m taking Ollie out, bye!” (slam).

“So…that’s a no?”

“Yes I know, I’ve come in to say I’m going out. Bye.” (slam).

Don’t think door banging is FRQÀQHG WR WKH HQWUDQFH WR RXU castle; all the internal doors take a hammering. I am an expert in counting down the slams.

Amateur. And so another week begins - football, gymnastics, swimming, cinema, proms, cheerleading, sleepovers, horse-riding.

“Dad, will you take me to the cinema?”

“Dad! That’s so unfair! Right! Fine.”

“Emma, what are we going to see?”

“Three, two, one …(slam!) Ooh, right on the money.”

“I’m going to watch The Hunger Games.”

Sarah was impressed. “You’ve got that down to a tee.”

“Half way through the movie, will I feel like a Lyons hot dog?”

“Here, do you want a go?”

“A what? Dad you’re not coming, you’re just giving us a lift.”

Right on cue, Evan popped his head round.

“Dad, I’m just going out.” “But Rob, you’ve just come in.”

I get ready to take Emma to the cinema in my trusty Mondeo Ghia (half leather trim, heated seats). Now, do I have everything? Keys, coat, shoes, glasses….ready. Beep! Beep! Hang on, who is that outside sounding their horn?

“OK”

“Dad, can I have a lift on Friday?” “No problem, where to, your girlfriend’s? The cinema?” “Glasgow.” “Glasgow?” “I’ve got tickets to see The Sausage Knotters.”

“I’m not entirely sure the Mondeo is up to it.” “Fine!” Sarah delayed her countdown just a touch too long “Three…..two (slam), oh damn!”

Have you ever tried to organise a parent’s lift rota on Facebook? It’d be easier WR VWDUW D SURWHVW ÁDVK PRE outside a G8 summit. No one tells me who is picking up who. Emma was in the back seat ready to go to Duke of Edinburgh (It was a meeting about his Award, he hadn’t called round to see if she was playing out) and I was just about to set off when a Chelsea tractor with blacked out windows skidded to a halt on the pavement in front of us. A strange creature with Gucci bug eyes and a mouth like a salmon was at the wheel. I shrugged. The creature shrugged back. Emma looked at me and shrugged. We all shrugged. Then the creature sped off, beeping her horn and pouting rude words at me.

“It’s OK, Rebecca’s Mum’s “Glasgow?” here, she’s taking us now, mix Eyebrows up, chin down, up, bye!” (slam). 56 Log on to our website: www.uselocally.co.uk

PEUGEOT GETS PERSONAL AS NEW 108 TAKES ON NEWARK New to Pratt and Gelsthorpe Ltd this month, Peugeot’s all-new compact car, the 108, is taking personalisation to a whole new level. The descendant of the popular 107 has a wide range of customisable options to suit every driver, including eight paint finishes, three interior trim variations and seven stylish themes. These themes, including tattoo, diamond and barcode, give the driver the option to add personality to different 58

sections of the vehicle, such as the wing mirrors, roof, and dashboard. Available as a 3-door or 5-door hatchback or cabrio, the 108 has a raft of enhancements making the urban runabout exceptionally user-friendly for everyday motoring needs. The car benefits from generous

interior space for up to four occupants and also boasts a carrying capacity of 196 litres, complete with a boot which is 20mm lower than the 107 for easier loading. Technology is a key factor in the car’s appeal, with a 7” touchscreen, keyless entry and reversing camera, improving the overall driving experience. Why not call in to our coffee mornings, which are held on the first Thursday of every month from 10am–12pm People always tell me they feel right at home as soon as they step through the door at Lancaster Grange, and that's music to my ears. After all, we pride ourselves on our genuine warmth and friendliness – it's all part of the first-class care and support that we provide to the people of Newark. We have a range of services and facilities for all care needs, including: • Dementia care • Nursing care • Activities programme • Respite and Daycare • Residential care • Beautiful gardens

If you fancy a look around our home, or just need a bit of friendly advice, give me a call on 01636 880 626
