WHAT IS THE LIFETIME COST OF A TIMBER FENCE VS A COLOURFENCE? Obviously there are many variables, not least the weather conditions; a strong wind could easily take down a timber fence causing the panels to need repair or replacement, but if you work on the basis that a good quality timber fence will generally be guaranteed for 15 Years, then it can be estimated as follows: Really good quality fence treatments can protect your fence for up to 5 years, but after an initial treatment this is still 3 further treatments to get you to 15 years, 5 if you go to the end of the ColourFence guarantee of 25 years.
Y
ou are probably going to have to clean your wooden fence annually with an algae remover or something similar, to keep it looking as it did when it was newly installed. Based on a 2017 survey by Foxtons, the typical British garden is 45x36ft, equate to around 21 traditional fence panels. This means that over the 15-year lifespan of your timber fence you are looking at investing around £550 in consumables, not including brushes, brush cleaner or dust sheets etc. This also equates to about 70 hours of labour over the years, more if you need to paint more frequently or undertake repairs. All this time and money invested only takes you to the end of the 15-year average lifespan of the timber fence; if you want a truly comparable figure then you need to look at the 25-year warranty period that comes with a ColourFence. In this additional 10 years you could be looking at another £300 of treatments over 40 more hours. Add to this that a significant number of the panels may need 8
replacing and you could be shelling out in excess of £2,000
for new panels and fitting. To add insult to injury, this only treats one side of your fence, you may well be relying on your neighbours to maintain their side and if they don’t keep up their side of the bargain so to speak, the life of your fence could be significantly impacted. So, whilst the initial £105 cost
of a typical ColourFence panel, compared with around £90 for equivalent timber feather edge fencing may seem high, when you consider the £50 of treatments, 7 hours of labour and £45 of repair/ replacements per panel that you save over the 25-year lifetime of the ColourFence, the value becomes apparent.
Sources: 5 year (brush on) treatment, £2.80 per litre, at stated max. coverage. ½ hour per panel Typical dilute to use sprayable algae remover £32 per 100m2 coverage. 5 mins per panel Foxtons typical British Garden Survey 2017. Prices Correct at time of writing – January 2018

Why Should I Make a Will?
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)
Many of us aren't very good at talking about death, so it's not surprising that over of us risk leaving our nearest and dearest with a lot of hassle and confusion by not making a Will. Most of us, at some time in our lives consider putting their DÎ?DLUV in order, but we never quite manage it and no further action is taken. There are of course the normal excuses of 'we're too busy', or 'I don't plan on dying just yet!'
Other than a Will, an LPA is singularly the most important document that every adult ought to have. Without it, if incapacity strikes you down, your family will have to dealing with the Court of Protection. A body which has been called evil by many people for how its decisions destroy families all under the guise of the Mental Health Act. The expense alone of dealing with the Court of Protection makes the cost of setting up an LPA positively miniscule in comparison. Whether it’s a simple Will, advice on protecting your property from Care Home fees or you have an even more complex issue, Stepping Stone Wills can provide you with the most appropriate solution together with a truly personal service.

A Vets Voice By Mark Lainchbury
We are hoping by February all the various strains of flu with associated problems have disappeared and some sunshine is heading our way! There have been numerous problems recently at the clinic and unfortunately euthanasia has been all too prevalent lately. It's such a sad time for all. The final choice to have an animal put to sleep is not easy. One has to weigh up the options, take on board the professional advice given and then make an informed decision. The welfare of the pet is always the chief factor in these cases . Hard to let go but quality of life is of the utmost importance and it is a decision not to be made lightly. The staff at the clinic understand and are very aware of each particular situation. A pet is another member of the family and when they are no longer around to meet and greet with such enthusiasm , it leaves a gaping hole. It is only natural to feel very sad and lonely especially to return home and the house feels empty. The Blue Cross have a Pet Bereavement Support Service which may be helpful in coming to terms with the loss of a pet. Collingham Vet Clinic
Does Your Pet Have Joint Problems? Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way. Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of them suffering from arthritis. What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. These are some of the indicators to watch out for: • Stiffness when your dog gets up, or after a walk. • They walk with a limp, even if only for a few minutes. • Your cat’s reluctance to jump

A big year ahead for Newark’s newest neighbourhood Middlebeck, the new community taking shape on the land south of Newark, remains a hive of activity. Bowbridge Green, the first of many open spaces that will characterise the development, is now finished. The new loop road, which forms the outline of the first homes at Middlebeck, is also on the point of completion.
And the groundwork that began in 2017, to create the vital infrastructure and services that will support the entire community, continues to run according to schedule. Look out for more updates on the planning and design of the future phases of Middlebeck both online and in ‘Use Locally’.

And Another Thing... Tom Receives a Proposal II by Tom Hughes @groomsdaybook

Nigel stared at the object for less than a second. “Terry, put that away and don’t be silly.” Now it was my turn. “Here everyone, put these on.” Twelve black t-shirts appeared - “WATCH OUT LADIES - IT’S NIGEL’S STAG!” A few of the guys pulled them on over their shirts, the material straining to cover their considerable girths. Colin, Nigel’s brother (clearly miffed because he wasn’t the best man), objected. “I can’t wear that - it won’t go with these chinos.” “Listen Colin, if you prefer, I can ring Val and see if you can go on the hen do?” Then it was Brian’s ÀQDQFH WXUQ WR SLSH XS Brian was bald, 5’ 3” and wider than he was tall. He squinted through round spectacles. “Tom, do I have to wear one? What if I get chatted up? I won’t be able to look Margaret in the
eye.” Brian blinked as he pushed his mist-covered glasses back up his little nose. “Don’t worry Bri, if I see any strange women approaching you, I’ll be sure to let them know you’re completely off limits. Right, everyone follow me - Liverpool here we come!” And so The Dirty Dozen hit Liverpool’s bars. As I was best man, it was only reasonable that I was in WKH FKDLU IRU WKH ÀUVW URXQG “OK, what are we having?” &ROLQ ZDV WKH ÀUVW WR SLSH up. “Err, Tom, can I have a lime and soda?” “No. You can have a Guinness. Ken?” “I’ll have Guinness. And I’ll have Colin’s too if he doesn’t want it.” After a few ales, in order to line the stomach, we repaired to a pre-booked Chinese restaurant. After a gut-busting banquet, it was time to settle up. On

If you recall, Dear Reader, previously on And Another Thing, my old chum and workmate Nigel had been fatally struck by Cupid’s bow and had resolved, for reasons best known only to himself, to make an honest woman of Val, his long term squeeze. Yours truly was appointed best man and was duly tasked with organising the stag do. So, after rejecting Newcastle (too chilly), Amsterdam (too hazy) and New York (too far), Nigel, being a big fan of the Beatles, plumped for Liverpool. And so it came to pass that twelve middle-aged workmates alighted the train at Lime Street and, rucksacks in hand, trudged towards the Adelphi. We were standing in the lobby when Terry (marketing) unzipped his suitcase, pulled out an enormous ÁHVK FRORXUHG UXEEHU VXLW and presented it to the groom. “Here Nige, the lads want you to wear this.”

Time to Get Pruning by Pippa Greenwood
At this time of year the weather is often perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants, so take advantage of the fact that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are now devoid of leaves and get stuck in. Here’s how to make sure your SUXQLQJ ZLOO UHDOO\ EHQHÀW \RXU plants: • For a small hedge or to roughly reshape a shrub, a good, sharp pair of well-oiled shears should do the job. Angle the blades to make a level trimmed surface. To make a neat and level surface when cutting the top of a hedge, use a taut string as a guide line. For large hedges consider using a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer, but make sure you can use it safely! • When removing stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses, use ‘loppers’, which are much better at cutting through relatively thick stems than shears or secateurs and yet also allow for accurate positioning of the cut. When cutting back branches above your head, wear protective headgear and goggles. • Secateurs are used for the most precise pruning of smaller woody stems. 34
Provided they are good and sharp, you can make a perfectly clean and accurate cut. Always cut to an outwardfacing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems as well as for formative pruning (where you are helping to ensure the plant grows in the direction you want it to), and for pruning to HQFRXUDJH ÁRZHULQJ • To remove larger tree branches or if you have fruit trees to prune, then a pruning saw is the perfect tool. Use a sawing action for best results and make the cut a few millimetres from the main stem to which the branch you are removing is joined. A cut like this will heal quickly and the wound will be smaller and less prone to fungal rotting. • Check the best pruning time for the plants you have in mind. Although most hedges and many shrubs can be cut back now, there are exceptions. • Some trees - mainly those in the Prunus family such as cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines - are very prone to a potentially fatal fungal
infection known as ‘silver leaf’. To reduce the likelihood of this, prune these trees in the summer unless there is no alternative. • Pruning tools should be really sharp; if blunt, the job will need more effort and may result in damage to the plant from a jagged cut or crushed stems. • Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off (wetness encourages wood rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud to allow new growth without dieback - you will need to use secateurs, loppers or a saw to do this. • Stand back from time to time when pruning to check the overall appearance of the plant and judge which part to tackle next, as close up it is harder to see how your pruning is affecting the overall shape of the plant. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, biocontrols, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Citizens Advice Sherwood and Newark shares tips for people to land a new job Citizens Advice Sherwood and Newark is sharing tips with people who want to change jobs, from how to find a role that’s a good fit, to the best way to tell your boss you are moving on. Past research has found 1 in 5 people consider changing jobs in January, making it the most popular time of year for job hunting. National Citizens Advice helped with 2,300 problems around applying for jobs last year, with nearly half these issues (1,100) concerning references. Often people can either struggle to get hold of a reference that is suitable, or can’t get hold of one at all. Other problems workers sought help from Citizens Advice Sherwood and Newark on include when to disclose an illness to a potential employer, or how much notice they’re required to give their boss when nothing is specified in their contract. Lesley Barrick, of Citizens Advice Sherwood and Newark said: “Changing jobs is often top of people’s to-do list in January, but some can trip up because they don’t have the right paperwork. “It’s really important to get your references lined up and to pass any other checks that are required before handing in your notice. Otherwise, you could run the risk of having your job offer withdrawn and your current employer may not be in a position to rehire you. 42
Top tips for finding the right role and handing in your notice Do your homework Do a bit of digging on what the employer offers to see if matches your priorities. Most employers publish their staff benefits on their website, so you can see how much holiday and parental leave you can get, and how much they pay into your pension. If they don’t have a website, contact the person who’s posted the job ad directly. Disclosing an illness or disability You shouldn’t be asked about having an illness or disability during the application process, and you don’t need to disclose this unless you want to. However, if you need reasonable adjustments to be made at an interview let the employer know - the law says they have to be accommodating.
Make sure the job fits your circumstances All employers need to consider requests for flexible working, but they don’t have to accept it. It’s your call when to make a request about changes to working hours - you could bring it up at interview or when you’re offered the job. Get your references lined up An employer usually only gives a firm job offer once they’ve received one or more references. It’s best to tell your employer you’ve been offered another job and ask them if they’d be happy to provide a reference. Keep the conversation or email professional and friendly so as to avoid any problems down the line if the job offer falls through.
