Students find cheap entertainment By Sabrina Cruz C O R R E S P O N D E N T

For many college students, struggling with money is a distinct part of the university experience. With so much to think about when it comes to spending, finding affordable and fun places to go to can become difficult. According to USF’s “Completion/ Graduation and Transfer Out Rates from 2011 Freshmen” 69 percent of students received the Pell Grant, 59 percent of students receive subsidized loans and 65 percent of students received unsubsidized loans. With more than half the student population in need of financial aid, wise spending habits are necessary. However, that does not mean fun and relaxation has to be cut out of the college experience. Places such as Tampa Bay Riverwalk offer a free, gorgeous

view of the Hillsborough River. The two and a half mile long walkway provides students an affordable place to spend time while treating their eyes. Populated with benches, Riverwalk provides an interesting place to eat throughout the day. Sophia Urena, a freshman majoring in chemistry and Pell Grant recipient, takes advantage of Riverwalk to hang out with her friends. “Riverwalk has become one of my favorite places to visit. The view and vibe are great for hanging out and even picnics,” Urena said. For students with a preference for nature, the USF Botanical Gardens are a cheap place to visit. The wide variety of plant assortments range from cactus displays to orchids. The beautiful arrangements allow for a peaceful escape of the city. The garden provides many opportunities

to take fun pictures with friends and make memories. There is a small entrance fee of $1 for all USF students. The Contemporary Art Museum on campus is conveniently located near the Marshall Student Center in front of a Bull Runner Stop. At the Art Museum, students can find contemporary art exhibited from all around the world. Students can enjoy the museum without worrying about price and staying within a budget. Christopher Cruz, a senior majoring in secondary education and Pell Grant recipient, often spends afternoons at the museum. “The art museum gives me a relaxing experience while allowing me to view different sociocultural perspectives,” Cruz said. “I’ve visited the museum frequently throughout my years at USF.”

Felicitous offers students a good place to have a good coffee By Andrea Martin C O P Y

E D I T O R

USF alumnus Rani Chehal created Felicitous Coffee when she realized the lack of local, offcampus study spots. Now with two locations comfortably close to USF, students have a place to sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and get some work done. Jessica Ulett, a senior majoring in mass communications, has been working at Felicitous since October. “I love working at a coffee shop that has so much love put into it,” Ulett said. “The owner, manager and my coworkers are some of the most caring and hardworking people I’ve met, and we all love being a part of the Felicitous family.” According to Ulett, each location has its perks. The location on 51st street has a cozier atmosphere,

being small and its own freestanding building while the 42nd street location because it’s larger, offers more seating and is located right inside the Uncommon Apartments building.

Sage Fannon, a senior majoring in humanities and cultural studies, takes advantage of both locations to get her homework done. “It’s a great study spot!” Fannon said. “There aren’t a lot of

distractions, and its always nice to study or work in an area where the people are there to do the same.” Having frequented many times, Ashley Gallinaro, a junior majoring in communication sciences and disorders, is partial to the 42nd street location inside Uncommon because of the mural painted on the walls. “It was painted by one of the baristas who works there and has tons of ‘Easter eggs’ alluding to different songs, for people that read sheet music check out the music notes and try to see what song it is, tea flowers and drinks that are made only at Felicitous,” Gallinaro said. “Try to find the part that references the drink ‘The Honey Bear.’” The ambiance of the locations, from the hanging lights in the 42nd street location to the stickers

adorning the walls and doors on the 51st street location, attract guests to come in and relax for awhile. “I believe many students are attracted to Felicitous because of the atmosphere,” Ulett said. “It is a nice place to get away from campus and enjoy a latte while doing homework. There are also options for everyone, including gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options.” Giving herself the challenge to try a new drink every time, Fannon most recently tried the Cafe Au Lait — coffee with steamed milk and foam. “They have a lot to choose from, so it’s fun trying new drinks,” Fannon said. “The staff has been wonderful each time I’ve gone. They’re very friendly and super open to answering any questions. They also make some mean coffee.”
