Students’ spring break plans change after coronavirus scares
Even though a person with the coronavirus traveled through Tampa International Airport, it hasn’t been ranked as a high-risk area. The Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport hasn’t seen any service changes either. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE

For USF students, the coronavirus (COVID-19) has found itself in the mix of their travel plans. After two cases of the coronavirus were identified in Hillsborough County and one case in Manatee County, it seems that many spring break plans are a toss-up. It was announced last Wednesday that USF education abroad spring break trips have been canceled. Bulls Service Break (BSB), a traveling volunteer program hosted by the Center for Leadership and
Civic Engagement (CLCE), has also had one of its trips affected by USF’s decision. The BSB program travels only during the week of spring break. “This did affect our Puerto Rico trip as Puerto Rico travel follows USF global travel processes,” said Immersive Experiences Vice Chair Aixa Cruz Rodriguez in an email to The Oracle. Puerto Rico is usually considered domestic travel as it is a territory of the U.S. and does not require a passport to travel within the U.S. Aside from the Puerto Rico trip, the rest of BSB trips are still on. “Not much has changed from the original plans for the trips — we just have to take extra precautionary measures to ensure the safety of all of our students,” said Cruz Rodriguez.
Even though USF has canceled all of its international trips for the upcoming break, it hasn’t made a significant dent in airline travel in the area. The Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport hasn’t seen any service changes, according to Senior Vice President and COO Mark Stuckey in comments to the Herald-Tribune. Information regarding flights through Tampa International Airport (TPA) is less clear after one of the women who contracted coronavirus walked through the airport. Even with the virus passing through TPA, the state government has not regarded it as a high-risk area. “At this time, the Florida Department of Health has deemed those visiting or working at TPA to be at low risk of contracting, carrying or spreading the coronavirus,”
TPA representatives said in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times. If you were planning to drive to your spring break destination, the coronavirus may have managed to affect your plans too. Gas prices in the Tampa Bay area have been the cheapest they’ve been in over a year, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The drop in gas prices hasn’t incentivized travel against the threat of coronavirus, though. Valerie Smoliakova, a firstyear student at USF, canceled a trip to Universal Studios in Orlando because of coronavirus’s increased presence in Florida. “I didn’t want to take the risk of being around so many people like that, especially with Orlando being so close to us here [Tampa],” said Smoliakova. As information regarding coronavirus is released in bits
and pieces, a growing uncertainty about the severity of the disease has been reflected in changes to students’ spring break plans. Another student, Riley O’Neal, said that her friend canceled a trip to tour a law school in the Miami-Dade area. However, one student’s family has kept their plans to travel to Tampa to visit them during spring break. Eliza Kuhlow, an out-of-state USF student from Wisconsin, is excited to see them as they land. “My family is far, so breaks like these are some of the only times I get to see them,” said Kuhlow. “The virus just doesn’t seem like enough of an emergency to stop that.”

Spring fashion trends vary every year, but that doesn’t change the fact that many spring breakers want to be “on trend” at the beach so they stand out among the crowd — in a good way. With spring break coming up March 16-20, students should keep in mind what swimwear to pack as they hit the beaches soon. Both men and women can follow the same trends and find bathing suits that fit their style while still being trendy. Designers from all price
points, ranging from OYE Swimwear, priced at $350, to Xhilaration, with tops and bottoms priced separately between $14.99 to $17.99, put out fashion shows with what they see to be the hottest new swimsuits on the market. Animal print has been in style since the end of 2019, and swimwear is no exception. Some of the biggest crazes in swimwear for spring 2020 are animal prints, ranging from classic leopard to snakeskin. “Animal prints will always be sexy, and everything from leopard to zebra was fierce on the catwalks this season,” Jaclyn Palermo said in an August 2019 Cosmopolitan article. To back this claim up, Maya Adivi said in a November 2019 Glowsly article on spring and summer trends that animal prints are “one of the biggest 2020 swimsuit trends.”
Even under the hot Florida sun, long sleeve swimsuits are gaining popularity. Brands like Sidway, Acacia Swimwear, Devon Windsor Swimwear, O’Neill and Lululemon have all put out long sleeve swimsuits this season. “Whether you’re looking for more protection from harmful UV rays or you just want to try out a more sophisticated silhouette, adding a long sleeve will do just the trick,” Eliza Huber said in a July 2019 Refinery29 article reviewing the biggest trends of Miami Fashion Week. Huber noted how popular one-shoulder bathing suits are this season as well. She featured images of oneshoulder suits from the brands MIMI The Label, Vitamin A and Chloé Rose. Specific colors have been known to be trendy from time

to time, and spring 2020 is no exception. This season the color orange has been noted from Miami Fashion Week to be a popular swimwear color that many designers are using and customers are demanding. In December of last year, The Yacht Week put out an article explaining why the color orange is so “on trend.” “Whether you’re after soft sherbets, cool corals or seriously juicy neons, orange is everywhere in 2020,” the article said. “It’s one of the ripest swimwear trends around, with a shade to suit everyone’s colour palette.” The Yacht Week also discussed how neon colors made a big splash at Miami Swim Week. “Vibrant [colors] continue to pack a punch in the sunshine with neon still a major trend for

2020. Be bold and let yourself shine in some eye-catching swimwear,” The Yacht Week article said. Other trends listed come from Sarah Wasilak’s article for PopSugar. She concluded after speaking to swimwear brands such as Zimmermann, Summersalt, Solid and Striped, Onia, Marysia and Lisa Marie Fernandez, that swimwear with a wrap effect, vegan leather, ruffles and a scarf effect are emerging as trendy this season. Vintage swimwear and maillots that double as bodysuits are also in fashion, according to Wasilak. Trends come and go, but one thing remains the same: being in fashion will never go out of style. It doesn’t matter if you’re walking the Met Gala red carpet or going to the beach for spring break with some friends, you’ll no doubt find something in line with the trends this summer.

St. Augustine, Daytona and Ft. Lauderdale beaches are popular destinations for a beach getaway this spring break. SPECIAL TO THE ORACLE By Courtney Holland C O R R E S P O N D E N T
If you’ve already spent most of your last paycheck, you might want to consider planning your spring break vacation on a tighter budget. Some people may want to travel abroad or around the country with friends, but a minivacation in Florida can be both affordable and enjoyable. Florida is home to many popular vacation destinations such as beaches, national parks and historical sights that are easily accessible. With gas prices in Florida averaging $2.37 per gallon in the first week of March according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, road trips around the state can be the best
plan. Every destination listed is two to four hours away from Tampa and will cost you $20-$40 in gas if your starting point is the city. St. Augustine, the oldest city in Florida, is home to many tourist sights such as the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument and Saint George Street. With history to learn and beautiful sights to see, St. Augustine is a destination where you can relax with friends or family during the break. Besides St. Augustine, Daytona and Ft. Lauderdale beaches are also popular destinations during the week-long vacation. Besides occasionally paying $1-$5 for parking and purchasing food, it does not cost more than $20 to
spend a day in the sand. For a quieter beach day, locations such as Lovers Key and Sanibel are filled with white sand and many restaurants to choose from such as Flippers Pizzeria and the Island Cow. Lunch for two at these places typically cost between $20 and $30. Other than beaches, a destination that could be an easy low-budget vacation would be a trip to Ginnie Springs in Gainesville. For a $15 entrance fee, guests are able to swim in the fresh springs all day. For additional charges, guests can also tube down the Sante Fe River and rent a kayak or canoe. Weeki Wachee located in Spring Hill is a natural spring that’s $13 per guest. This
