Top 10 things to do within 10 minutes of campus By Matthew Cutillo S T A F F

W R I T E R

No. 10 Studio Movie Grill at University Mall Studio Movie Grill allows you to eat restaurant-style food while you watch a film. The opportunity to watch the film, while not having to worry about going to refill your drinks or get more popcorn provides an entirely different cinema experience. Plus, the student discounts available are always nice. No. 9 IceSmile IceSmile is an ice cream store with a completely different

process than what you’d normally expect. The ice cream is prepared in “roll” form, and you’re allowed a ton of different toppings to go with your order. There’s something therapeutic about standing up against the glass and watching the server roll the liquid substance into icecream form, but the magic does not end there. Always served with a chocolate koala bear on top, it takes this unique ice cream experience to the next level. No. 8 Imagine Escape Games A group activity for you and your friends, there are a few escape rooms around the Tampa area but this one is much easier

to get to from campus. Solving riddles against the clock with your friends is a great bonding exercise, or maybe a great frustration depending on present company. Overall, with the right group of people, escape rooms can be a lot of fun. No. 7 USF Botanical Gardens Not just close to campus, but actually on it, the USF Botanical Gardens is 15 acres of land dedicated to wildlife and natural scenery. It is truly a place every USF student should visit before graduation. Although places like Lettuce Lake Park offer a bit more variety (more on this later), the USF Botanical Gardens are

still worth a walk on a nice day.

No. 6 Chewy Boba Chewy Boba is a drink company focusing on bubble tea beverages. With a large variety of different options you’re bound to find something that strikes your interest. More than just a place to grab something cool to drink, the establishment also provides an unique environment to kick back with a couple of friends, or even study during the semester. No. 5 World of Beer For fans of craft beers, World of Beer (WOB) provides on of the largest selections in the area. It’s

not all about the booze, though, as they have a relatively large menu and even Sunday “BEERunch.” If you are just looking for a place to hangout during the day, there is plenty of relaxed seating space that includes video games, foosball tables and darts to keep you entertained. No. 4 Adventure Island Adventure Island is a water park near USF with water rides, slides and dining. There are dozens of activities to keep you entertained throughout the day and is a nice place to go when the summer heat is just too much. Come hungry, because there is

a wide variety of food and drink options in the park. The park has been around for years, but go while you can, because it closes during the off-season months of the fall and winter seasons. No. 3 Lettuce Lake Park Lettuce Lake Park is a huge, sprawling nature area with bicycle paths and jogging trails as well as options to kayak or fish. It’s a beautiful place to explore on a cool day with endless amounts of wildlife and plants to see. If you’re a nature lover or someone who needs photos for a summer course, it is definitely worth checking out. No. 2 Busch Gardens It would be hard to make a list of some of the most exciting things to do around campus without mentioning Busch Gardens. It is a massive theme park with rides, safari tours and live shows. If you have the money, it’s definitely worth everyone in the USF area giving a chance. Coming in toward the top of the list, you are destined to have a lot of fun if you spend a day seeing all of the attractions. No. 1 Mojo Books & Records Mojo Books & Records is Tampa Bay’s largest independent book and record store. The variety of the products they sell allows for a new experience each time you visit. The employees are very knowledgeable about what they do and the “employee recommendation” section provides great insight into items you may not normally chose. It has a calm and inviting vibe that lends itself well to the slow paced exploring you’ll need to do to get the full experience.

Affordable one-way flights out of the Tampa International Airport

College can be an interesting time financially. Some students are on their own, spending entire summers abroad in Europe and Central America. Others still live at home, with vacations being limited to those they go on with their family. Most, however, are somewhere in between, eating cheap for a week in order to buy concert tickets or travel somewhere for a weekend. This is for those in the middle. With budget airline Spirit regularly flying in-and-out of Tampa, the destinations achievable for under $200 round trips are more plentiful

than ever before. Here’s five of the best deals flying out of Tampa International Airport from July 18 to Aug. 18. No. 5 Destination: Atlanta Price: $89 Dates: Aug. 14-16 A quick trip to Florida’s neighbors to the north right before fall semester begins? Spirit airlines can get you from Tampa to Atlanta for as cheap as $89 before classes begin on Aug. 21. Points of interest include touring CNN, the World of Coke, exploring the site of the 1996 Olympics at Centennial Park or catching an Atlanta Braves game, which will be playing at home the 14th through 16th.

No. 4 Destination: New Orleans Price: $111 Dates: Aug. 11-14 Have a flair for jazz music and cajun cuisine? Only $111 could land you in one of America’s most unique cities. Walk down historic Bourbon Street, grab beignets and coffee from the historic Cafe Du Monde or indulge on a crawfish as you listen to jazz music in the streets. No. 3 Destination: Chicago Price: $118 Dates: Aug. 14-18 More than just a Broadway Musical about vengeful

women, Chicago offers high rise views of the city, plentiful nightlife options and some fantastic deep-dish pizza. For the artistic, Chicago offers a number of museums including the American Writers Museum and the Art institute of Chicago, which also offers education in the arts opportunities. No. 2 Destination: Seattle Price: $177 Dates: Aug. 14-18 Can you really go wrong? Despite the gloomy weather, The Emerald city has much to offer those who visit. The Space Needle allows you to get a full panoramic view of the area. The city also offers a number of fishing and yachting charters

for those interested in spending a day on the water. The big city atmosphere, paired with all sorts of excursions, allows fo a truly one of a kind experience. No. 1 Destination: Los Angeles Price: $177 Dates: Aug. 7-10 Perhaps while visiting Los Angeles, you could book a night or two at Hotel California, it’s a lovely place. The Hollywood Walk of Fame, movie stars left and right and plenty of tours to take what’s not to love? The city’s location in the western parts of the country also allow for quick access to other cities like Las Vegas, if you are looking to expand your trip somehow.

The top five most bingeworthy series on Netflix

By Jesse Stokes E D I T O R

I N

C H I E F

No. 5: Dexter If blood and guts gross you out, then look right past Dexter. The serial-killing vigilante the show follows also works as a blood spatter analyst for the Police Department, acting as the (almost) perfect cloak for him to hide under. This show offers it all — love, murder, coming of age, workplace dynamics and yes, even the ever growing strange dynamic of a brother and sister. No. 4: American Horror Story Much Like Dexter, this series is certainly not for the faint of

heart. American Horror Story, however, has a deserving spot on this list because of the series being able to reinvent itself season after season with its unique structure. In the series, each season has a completely new theme, storyline and structure, completely unrelated (at first sight) to those that preceded it and come after. While some of the actors return each season, their characters are entirely different from those that they may have played in seasons past. No. 3: Orange is the New Black If you have not heard of Orange is the New Black by now, you must have been living under a rock — or perhaps,

in a prison. The series follows a unique group of characters living together in a female prison. What may be the most admirable quality of the series is that because of its setting, it offers actors and actresses that do not have the stereotypical “Hollywood appearance” the opportunity to do what they love, all the while on an Emmy nominated pop-culture phenomenon. With one twist and turn after another, the show certainly captivates the viewer. Honorable Mention: Friends So, no one ever told you college was going to be this way? That’s okay, look no further than the cast of Friends for inspiration on how to develop

new relationships with people you may not have otherwise known. Overlooking Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe on this list would have been a mistake. The reason this is included as an honorable mention is because the series is in a league all of its own. THEY. WERE. ON. A. BREAK! No. 2: Sons of Anarchy No other series offers a look into the lives of members of a motorcycle club quite like Sons of Anarchy. Jax Teller is a relatable character in the sense that throughout the whole series he is searching for himself. With a number of spinoffs already in the works, “the Sons” do not seem to be going anywhere for awhile. Also, the

last few episodes of the series surely will not disappoint. No. 1: Scandal It’s hard not to admire a strong, independent, force to be reckoned with of a woman, especially in a largely maledominated workplace, like the American political arena. If you are looking for a source of female empowerment and inspiration, then look no further than Olivia Pope. A series, so relevant with what is going on in the current world, all the while making constant references to historical events is what makes Scandal the most bingeable series that Netflix has to offer.
