University of Southern Indiana Foundation Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2010 We are pleased to present the 2010 Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors. This year we continue our format with stories and photos of incredible individuals associated with the University. Some are recipients of your generosity and others, by their gifts, participate in the University of Southern Indiana Foundation’s mission of support. This report also is cost-conserving and environmentally friendly. Please visit the Foundation web site at www.usi.edu/foundation for a complete list of donors to Foundation programs. Click on the Honor Roll of Donors cover image. If you do not want your name to appear in the online listing, notify the Foundation office at 812/464-1918. These compelling stories depict only a fraction of the people supported through the generosity of those who make gifts to the University of Southern Indiana Foundation, but dramatically illustrate the profound benefit private gifts provide. We hope you enjoy this year’s edition.
A complete list of donors to Foundation programs can be found at www.usi.edu/foundation. Click on the Honor Roll of Donors cover image. If you do not want your name to appear in the online listing, notify the Foundation office at 812/464-1918.

Dear Friends, I never tire of stories—and there are many—about generous gifts of support from good friends of the University of Southern Indiana who are passionate about helping USI students achieve success. We are blessed with alumni and friends whose stories reflect their dedication to our students, our mission, and our goals. Your gifts to the USI Foundation benefit a diverse and deserving group of University of Southern Indiana students and allow them the opportunity to accomplish their goals in higher education. Thank you for your generous support of USI and your commitment to providing valuable opportunities to our students—opportunities we could not offer without your help. In July 2010, the University Board of Trustees approved goals developed for the 2010–2015 Strategic Plan. Your continued support is vital to the accomplishment of these goals:
•▪ Enhance experiential learning opportunities •▪ Improve the graduation rate •▪ Preserve and nurture our campus community •▪ Provide leadership to Indiana and the region •▪ Increase the diversity of faculty, staff, and student body •▪ Become a 24/ 7 campus
The Board of Trustees also approved exciting new vision and mission statements:
Vision: Shaping the future through learning and innovation Mission: The University of Southern Indiana is an engaged learning community advancing education and knowledge, enhancing civic and cultural awareness, and fostering partnerships through comprehensive outreach programs. We prepare individuals to live wisely in a diverse and global community.
The next step in the process will be to develop strategies necessary to achieve the Strategic Plan goals. USI already stands as a model for student-centered postsecondary education, delivering high-quality teaching at an affordable cost. As we seek to develop more opportunities for our students, we will keep you informed about our progress and will ask for your continued support. Thank you for being part of the success of the University of Southern Indiana. Sincerely,
Linda L. M. Bennett, Ph.D. President University of Southern Indiana

How empty learning, and how vain is art, Unless it guides the mind, and mends the heart. Nothing but what is solid and refined, Should dare ask audience of mankind. Edward Young 1681–1765
Dear Alumni and Friends of USI, Thank you for your continued generosity. Your gifts to the USI Foundation to benefit the University for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010, totaled $5,121,830— a slight increase over the previous year. Total assets of the Foundation increased from $57.1 million during 2009-2010 to the current level of $64 million. We remain grateful to all of you and recognize that without your continued interest and support, we could not report these figures. Once again in our Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors we offer stories about how your gifts are changing the lives of University of Southern Indiana students for the better. You make a difference, and on behalf of the many students who benefit from your generosity, we thank you. The poem quoted above describes in an eloquent way how this University — your University—strives for excellence in every aspect of university life as we continue to fulfill our mission to prepare individuals to live wisely as productive citizens of the world. As alumni and friends of this great institution, you are an integral part of the University and we thank you for your generous support.
Sincerely,
David A. Bower Director of University Development President, USI Foundation

Running with the elite N ine-time All-American Mary Ballinger capped her historic USI career with an All-America award and a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2010 NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. An Academic All-American and a two-time GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in cross country/track and field, Ballinger is one of three female student-athletes to win a national championship after finishing first in the steeplechase at the 2009 NCAA II Outdoor Championships.
students such as Ballinger to perform well on the field and in the classroom.
Women’s cross country started at USI in 1984, with women’s track and field beginning in 1995. These are two of the 15 men’s and women’s sports offered at USI. The Varsity Club, the University’s athletic fund-raising organization, has provided the impetus for raising needed dollars in support of athletic programs. Funding from the Varsity Club makes it possible for
She will graduate in May 2011 and plans to continue her training in hopes of competing at an elite level and possibly running professionally. She is considering management in the corporate fitness/wellness field, when her professional running career is over.

Ballinger has balanced academics and athletics and has excelled in both areas. She hails from the College of Nursing and Health Professions as a food and nutrition major with a 3.54 grade point average. She attributes her classroom success to having understanding professors willing to work with her schedule and an ability to manage her time.

For the love of music M usic permeates the life of Phyllis Grimm. She is a singer, a listener, a leader, and a benefactor.
From piano lessons in childhood to glee club in high school to leading a dormitory singing group in college, she has been an active music maker. Currently she is a soprano in the Chancel Choir at Evansville’s Old North United Methodist Church, where Daniel R. Craig, director of the USI music program and assistant professor of music, is director of music. A devotee of the USI Chamber Choir, she called the group’s last Madrigal Feaste “magnificent.” Grimm has served on the boards of the Musicians’ Club, the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Evansville Philharmonic Guild. In 2008, she and her late husband, Dr. William C. H. Grimm, Jr., received the Vanderburgh County Arts Award for their years of involvement in the arts.
Grimm’s belief that music adds an important dimension to life has led her to provide a leadership gift that will benefit the University of Southern Indiana’s choral music program. “For everyone, I think music adds depth and sensitivity to life,” she said. “I can’t imagine life without it.” With her gift, the USI Foundation has established the Dr. William C. H. Grimm and Phyllis R. Grimm Choral Music Program Fund and a music endowment also bearing their names. Grimm’s gift will contribute to the growth and development of the choral music program, which now has 80 to 100 student participants.

is another benefit,” he said. The group has toured New Harmony, Indiana, and has taken a three-day trip to St. Louis.
“I cannot thank the Newman Family enough,” Holt said. “I’m doing everything to make them proud of sponsoring me.” He has met Newman family members at the scholarship luncheon hosted by the USI Foundation.
Holt planned a career in flavor chemistry, but his interests have changed and pharmacy is in his graduate school plans.
Fred C. Newman was a banker and Evansville opinion leader who supported public higher education and the University of Southern Indiana. Family members continue the funding. “The scholarship benefits have been amazing,” Holt said. “I’m able to attend college without worrying about finances. I can focus on the schoolwork. The son of Gregory and Theresa Holt, he was valedictorian in 2009 at Evansville’s Bosse High School. “Being at USI and close to home is a benefit to me. I live on campus so it feels like a separate city, but I can return home as needed.” Holt is a member of the American Chemical Society college chapter and serves on the executive committee for Phi Delta Theta, a social fraternity.

Twofold patronage R onald D. and Connie S. Romain’s first brush with the campus was as students in the early 1970s. Ron graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from the College of Business, and Connie graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the Bower Suhrheinrich College of Education and Human Services.
They both continue the relationship as loyal alumni, business leaders, and generous donors who are proud of their alma mater. Their most recent gift equipped a 52-seat boardroom in the Business and Engineering Center. Students and faculty will use the room for advisory board meetings, student organization meetings, student presentations, and collaborative efforts that bring business and engineering students together for scholarship and innovation.
President and CEO of Evansville-based United Companies, Ron Romain said, “We hire USI graduates in all the various parts of our company. Having a school that equips those students with the tools they need to do their job is not just an asset to our business but an asset to all businesses in Evansville.” He is the alumni representative on the USI Board of Trustees and past chair of the USI Foundation Board of Directors, the first alumnus to hold that position. Connie Romain served as a director for Southern Indiana Higher Education, Inc., a nonprofit organization which raised just under $1 million in 1967 to purchase a 1,400-acre tract of land for higher education institutions. The Romains also support a baseball scholarship, a music/ theatre scholarship, the Trustees Distinguished Merit Award, and the USI Annual Fund.

he Distinguished Professor Award, funded in 1983 by National City Bank and continued after the bank name changed to Integra Bank, singles out a faculty member selected by peers for recognition and a monetary gift. The award, announced during Honors Week, is presented during the Commencement ceremony in the spring. The recipient is also offered the opportunity to select a student to receive a scholarship in his/her name. David E. “Dave” Mitchell, above left, senior vice president and Wealth Management chief investment analyst at Integra Bank, said the bank treasures its relationship with the University of Southern Indiana and believes recognizing the wonderful work of the faculty is good for the University, the bank, and the community.

The award has been given to more than 20 faculty members over the years, honoring faculty in the sciences, education, liberal arts, business, health professions, and engineering. It is given for significant contributions to the University, the students, and the community. The current Distinguished Professor is Dr. Brian L.
