University of Southern Indiana Foundation Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2011 We are pleased to present the 2011 Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors. This year we continue our format with stories and photos of incredible individuals associated with the University. Some are recipients of your generosity and others, by their gifts, participate in the University of Southern Indiana Foundation’s mission of support. These compelling stories depict only a fraction of the people supported through the generosity of those who make gifts to the University of Southern Indiana Foundation, but dramatically illustrate the profound benefit private gifts provide. We hope you enjoy this year’s edition.

A complete list of donors to Foundation programs can be found at www.usi.edu/foundation. Click on the Honor Roll of Donors cover image. If you do not want your name to appear in the online listing, notify the Foundation office at 812/464-1918. On the cover The watercolor painting of John Cooper, a successful farmer who owned land east of New Harmony, was created by Jacob Maentel, one of the foremost folk artists of the 19th century. The portrait, a recent gift to Historic New Harmony from Mr. and Mrs. Hugh B. Lee, is one of six that Maentel painted of the Cooper family. The six portraits have remained together through the generations, and this is the fifth painting the Lees have donated to USI and Historic New Harmony. Mrs. Lee is the great-great-granddaughter of John Cooper. The portrait shows Cooper with his trusty dog, Snap, and his home and fields in the background. The portrait, which is in excellent condition, is a standout piece that strengthens the collection.

Dear Friends: Welcoming new and returning students to campus each fall reminds me how many people it takes to make the dream of a college degree a reality. Families, spouses, children, and the students themselves make sacrifices to achieve their educational goals. Faculty dedicate themselves to providing a caring intellectual environment wherein curious minds can thrive. Staff members reach out to support, guide, and encourage students to be persistent in their educational quest. Administrators work to achieve efficiency in hard times while keeping the educational mission as the primary focus of their efforts. But without friends like you, who understand the dreams our students have for a college degree, many of those dreams would die and USI would be a far lesser university. Your gifts to the USI Foundation support excellence in education, represented by the achievements of our students. One great example is Kenneth Schnautz, an engineering major and recipient of an international award for his leadership in helping to establish USI’s student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering. In fall 2009, Kenneth participated in a 15-week internship at NASA’s Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. A recipient of the Biagi Chance Cummins London and Titzer Engineering Scholarship, the Lilly Endowment Internship Scholarship, and a USI Departmental Scholarship, Kenneth has benefited from your commitment to education. This story of success is repeated hundreds, even thousands of times across this campus every year and you make that success possible. As USI continues to develop as a premier institution of public higher education, your support will increase the number of success stories we have to tell. With your help our graduates are emerging as tomorrow’s leaders for this region and for Indiana. Thank you for believing in the dreams of our students.

Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire. William Butler Yeats 1865 – 1939

Dear Alumni and Friends of USI, Considering the words of William Butler Yeats, it is clear you have kindled a great fire! Your conviction about the merits of higher education, your belief in the excellence of the University of Southern Indiana, and your passion for the development of this great institution—all are evident in the marvelous way you have supported USI. Because of your generosity, I am pleased to report that gifts to the University of Southern Indiana Foundation increased by $852,803 in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011. You can be justly proud that this year’s total contributions of $5,974,633 will benefit nearly 11,000 students—providing scholarships, internships, travel abroad, service learning projects, involvement in leadership training, and a host of other benefits that will shape the future through learning and innovation, and prepare those who study at USI to live wisely in a diverse and global community. Thanks to a spirit of philanthropy shared by friends of the University through the years, private gifts to the USI Foundation have transformed the institution in countless ways. The Foundation was established in 1968, just three years after the University was founded. As of June 30, 2011 total assets of the Foundation were $77.5 million. Another milestone was celebrated recently by USI Volunteer Services. In 2011, we passed the mark of one million volunteer hours donated since Volunteer USI began in 1996. That translates to an overwhelming $22 million in volunteer efforts. To each of you we offer sincere gratitude and a promise of continued service. With your support, we are energized to give our best to the University of Southern Indiana—truly an engaged learning community advancing education and knowledge. Sincerely,

David A. Bower Director of University Development President, USI Foundation University of Southern Indiana Foundation

Generosity backs students and honors family E

lmer and Doris Halwes honor excellence by supporting student scholars who have financial need and helping them achieve college degrees. Understanding that often the path to higher education can be overshadowed by financial restraints, the couple established the Bess C. and Elmer W. Halwes Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in the Vanderburgh Community Foundation, the fund benefits University of Southern Indiana students in the College of Business who are studying accounting or finance. The fund honors the memory of Elmer’s parents, Bess C. and Elmer W. Halwes. The couple’s generosity and support of education continued when they partnered with James A. Sanders, the brother of Doris, to establish the Roy W. and Adelaide Daudistel Sanders Scholarship. That scholarship honors the parents of Doris Halwes and Jim Sanders. Elmer and Doris also were among the first University friends to establish a Deans Scholarship, a merit scholarship for exceptional students who graduate at the top or

6

near the top of their high school class. Five of the competitive Deans Scholarships are awarded to students in any major. The other five are awarded, one each, to a student scholar in business, education, health professions, science or engineering, and liberal arts. It is evident through their generous support of USI academic scholarships that Elmer and Doris hold a special place in their hearts for academia. Their continued support of scholarships, academics, and the arts through the USI Foundation helps to create an atmosphere that fosters success for students and University programs. In addition to their financial support of USI, Doris is active on the USI Foundation Board of Directors and is a member of the President’s Circle. They served as honorary cochairs of the 2009 Toast to the Arts, a fund raiser for the Society for Arts and Humanities, an organization that supports USI’s various arts and humanities activities and academic programs.

Gina Happe Topper ’97, left, meets Nazish Chaudhry at USI.

Topper Scholarship is best thing to happen N

azish Chaudhry, a USI biology major, is the first-ever recipient of the Thomas E. Topper Endowed Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine (B/MD) scholarship. The daughter of a physical therapist and an occupational therapist, Chaudhry had dreams at an early age of entering the medical field. She embarks on her freshman year at USI eager to begin meaningful coursework. “This scholarship is the best thing that has ever happened to me,” she said. “I intend to take full advantage of this opportunity. Even with the financial burden of medical school in my future, I can focus solely on my undergraduate studies, which will provide me with a critical foundation of knowledge for all of my future endeavors.” Dr. Thomas E. Topper, a surgeon with The Heart Group, died in 2008 at the age of 60, shortly after completing his term as chair of the USI Foundation Board of Directors. A bequest from Dr. Topper’s estate endowed the Thomas E. Topper B/MD scholarship. The competitive B/MD

scholarship offers a provisional seat in the Indiana University School of Medicine in addition to a scholarship to USI. At a USI Foundation Board meeting, Dr. Topper said, “Education has always been…one of the real enablers of people. I think that the privilege and right to have access to an education belongs to everyone, and that’s no better embodied than by USI.” Chaudhry, a resident of Fishers, Indiana, is a dedicated volunteer involved with many organizations including Methodist Hospital and Wellington Manor in Indianapolis. She is bilingual and plays the viola. Dr. Topper was a lover of music and supporter of the arts at USI. Dr. Topper’s wife, Gina Happe Topper ’97, remains active in her alma mater as a member of the Society for Arts & Humanities Board of Directors.

r. Joey V. Barnett is an Evansville native and 1981 graduate of the University of Southern Indiana. An educator and research scientist, Dr. Barnett is on the faculty at Vanderbilt University in the Office of Biomedical Research Education and Training. He completed a Ph.D. in pharmacology at Vanderbilt University and held a fellowship at Harvard. He has served on the Vanderbilt University faculty for nearly 20 years. He instructs new scientists who will be leaders in academia, industry, and regulatory affairs, and he continues his own research of cardiac development as a co-principal investigator of a heart valve project that is being funded from a $24 million five-year grant by the National Institutes of Health. He serves as vice chair of Pharmacology and director of Graduate Studies in pharmacology in the medical school at Vanderbilt. A number of graduates from USI’s Pott College of Science and Engineering have worked or are currently working in Barnett’s lab at Vanderbilt including Rachel Byerley ’05;

8

Walter Jermakowicz ’03; Joey Love ’08; and Matt Mazalouskas ’04. Dr. Barnett is a member of the USI Foundation Board of Directors and often visits USI. “The University of Southern Indiana is incredibly good at providing the educational leadership required to really push Evansville forward,” said Dr. Barnett at the opening of the David L. Rice Library in 2006. A generous donor to the USI Foundation, Dr. Barnett is also an active fund raiser. He led a campaign for scholarships for the Baccalaureate/Doctor of Medicine program in the Pott College of Science and Engineering, and he established the Victor Barnett Engineering Scholarship to honor his own father. He is a member of Reflections Planned Giving Society and contributed to the Science Center room named in honor of cherished faculty members Mike and Anne Denner.

hen Brandon Burton ’05 and Courtney Burton enrolled at the University of Southern Indiana, grandparents Robert and Helen Haddad began a fervent partnership with the University. During their continued relationship with USI, they learned of the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics program called STEM in the Pott College of Science and Engineering and the efforts of the Stem Resource Center to help Indiana’s K-12 schools build the capacity necessary to make gains in delivery of STEM educational achievement for students. “The Haddad Foundation encourages and fosters an environment of continuous learning,” said Tammy Burton, a Haddad daughter and mother of Brandon and Courtney Burton. “We invested in the STEM program because it is offered to multiple schools and age groups, and it allows USI students mentoring opportunities.” “I learn well doing in addition to reading and hearing how something works,” said grandson Brandon Burton. “STEM gives students like me an opportunity to be hands on and get the experience of working with so many different aspects of the math and science world.”

The Haddad Foundation was established in 2002 as a means of passing on the Robert and Helen Haddad philosophy and philanthropy to Haddad generations to follow. Family members Tammy Burton, Robert Haddad Jr., Tracy Haddad, and Hayden Haddad Bishop, Roger Fromer, CFO of Columbus Container Inc. and attorney Kevin Alerding are the directors. The senior Haddads graduated from Oklahoma University and married in 1954 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Robert Haddad Sr. started Columbus Container Inc. in Columbus, Indiana, in 1975. The manufacturing company produces corrugated packing boxes. It now has plants and warehouses in various cities and the employees in its workforce are skilled in STEM fields. The USI STEM Resource Center is a leader in the Indiana STEM Resource Network to help develop a workforce of the future and innovation necessary to be competitive as a region, state, and nation.
