Jon Mark Hall, Director of Athletics Jon Mark Hall was appointed to the position of director of Athletics in January 2002, after seven years as the assistant director.

in the post-season. In 2000 and 2001, Hall put the Eagles on the national map with their first two invitations to the NCAA II Tournament in the 27-year history of the program.

Under his direction, USI was the 2003-04 GLVC All-Sports and Commissioner’s Cup winner and host of the 2004 and 2009 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships.

Hall came to USI after his appointment at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg as an assistant athletic director, where he was the NCAA compliance coordinator, oversaw the academic support service program for student athletes, and coordinated the Athletes Can Educate (ACE) program. He also assisted in fundraising and promotional activities.

In addition to his duties as director of Athletics, Hall also is the chair of the NCAA Division II men’s and women’s tennis committee. He has served on the Great Lakes Valley Conference Executive Committee and the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional women’s basketball committee. Hall joined the USI Athletic Department in 1995 as an assistant athletic director and men’s tennis coach. As the men’s tennis coach, Hall was named the GLVC Coach of the Year five times, directed the Screaming Eagles to four GLVC regularseason titles and GLVC Tournament crowns, and had a 123-47 record (.724).

The native of Murray, Kentucky, is a 1990 cum laude graduate of Murray State University, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. While at MSU, Hall was on the tennis team for two seasons, earning Academic All-Ohio Valley Conference honors in 1987. Hall received his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio State University in 1992. In 1998-99, he completed the Sports Management Institute Executive Program at the University of South Carolina and the University of Notre Dame. Hall and his wife Patti reside in Evansville and have four sons, Nathan, Garland, Ty, and Owen, and daughter Mary Claire.

During his final season as head coach, Hall led the Eagles to their third straight appearance in the NCAA II Tournament and their first victory

USI is a comfortable drive from the major metropolitan centers of Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville, Nashville, and St. Louis. The Campus The Health Professions Center, Science Center, Wright Administration Building, Education Center, and Orr Center are located on the north side of campus. Rice Library, University Center, Liberal Arts Center, Technology Center, and Business and Engineering Center form the quadrangle in the center of campus. The Physical Activities Center and the Recreation, Fitness, and Wellness Center are located east of University Boulevard, a major thoroughfare through campus. Apartment buildings and residence halls are home to 2,800 students who live on campus.

Academic Life The University enrolls 10,702 students and offers undergraduate majors in 70 areas of study. An ever-increasing number of post-graduate programs also are available to students who wish to continue their education, including a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Opportunities are available for service learning, study abroad, and internships. Campus Life Outside the classroom, students have opportunities to participate in more than 90 organizations offering co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Special interest clubs, student government, sororities and fraternities, music and drama groups, and other organizations enable the students to enjoy and contribute to campus life.

Residence Life Students living on campus have their choice of two types of housing. Students can live in standard apartments or in residence halls which have amenities such as Internet connections, wireless Internet, and cable television. Computer labs, laundromats, a convenience store, outdoor and indoor recreation areas, and student lounges contribute to an efficient living environment that has proven to be overwhelmingly popular with students. Meal plans also are available at the University Center, which is located in the center of campus. Financial Assistance USI provides families with an affordable way to a higher education. While some families find that they can handle the cost of a USI education without financial assistance, others qualify for need-based financial packages, including grants, loans, and on-campus jobs.

ituated on the banks of the Ohio River, Evansville is a mid-sized city that welcomes USI students and offers them plenty of things to do. A 10,000-seat arena will open in downtown in fall 2011. Traveling Broadway shows and feature performances come to The Centre. he University of Southern Indiana softball team is counting on a deep and talented pitching staff as well as a competitive roster that features 21 players to lead it back to the top of the GLVC standings in 2011. Meshing 11 returning players with 10 newcomers will be a big challenge for 10th-year Head Coach Sue Kunkle, who is the program’s all-time winningest coach with a 252-204-1 (.553) record. Although the Screaming Eagles return seven position starters, including their entire infield and outfield, Kunkle believes the depth of her roster will provide plenty of competition at several positions. Seven seniors, including All-GLVC first baseman Brittany DeWeese and All-GLVC second baseman Amanda Brendel, will lead the Eagles. DeWeese, a second-team All-GLVC performer in 2010, led the Eagles in batting average (.353), hits (49), doubles (11),

home runs (7), and RBIs (36) last season. She ranks fourth all-time at USI in home runs (17) and is eighth all-time at USI in RBIs (88). A second-team All-GLVC honoree in 2009, Brendel battled through injury a year ago to post a .229 batting average with five home runs, 18 RBIs, and seven doubles. Senior third baseman LeAnn Collins and senior shortstop Dani Finkelstein round out the Eagles’ returning starters in the infield, while senior outfielders Reva LeDuneBourgasser and Heather Swarts formed two-thirds of the Eagles’ starters in the outfield in 2010. Collins earned second-team All-GLVC honors a year ago after hitting .318 with nine doubles, five home runs, and 24 RBIs. Finkelstein, who hit .246 with three home runs and 10 RBIs a year ago, solidified USI’s middle infield a year ago with a .953 fielding percentage in 41 games. LeDune-Bourgasser also earned second-

team All-GLVC honors in 2010 after hitting .308 with six home runs and 25 RBIs. Swarts started 29 games in the outfield last season—most coming in leftfield— and had a home run and four RBIs. Senior utility player Dani Monks, who has played a majority of the last two seasons in the outfield, will compete for the Eagles’ starting catcher duties after spending the fall season behind the plate. USI’s lone junior this season is third baseman/pitcher Kristen O’Haver, who could also serve as the Eagles’ designated player. O’Haver played in 21 games during her sophomore season, hitting .267 with a home run and seven RBIs in 30 at-bats. She also appeared in the pitching circle five times, posting a 1-1 record with a 3.68 ERA. Rounding out the Eagles’ returning players are a trio of sophomores—outfielder Katherine Belsito, pitcher/infielder Stephanie Bittner, and outfielder Jessica McCullough.

Brendel earned AllGLVC honors as a sophomore in 2009 after hitting .307 with 10 doubles and seven home runs. Belsito earned third-team All-GLVC honors as a freshman last season after hitting .293 with six doubles and 10 RBIs as USI’s lead-off hitter.

Gogel, catcher Lauren Hatfield, pitcher/ utility player Kelsey Jankowski, utility player Lindsay Kivett, outfielder Teri Newmaster, and utility player Alison Nord.

Bittner became the Eagles’ go-to player in the pitching circle during her freshman season, posting a 7-3 record with a 2.38 ERA and a save after entering USI’s starting rotation in April.

Brink graduated from Castle High School where she was a first-team All-State performer after posting a 23-2 record in the circle as a senior. Gogel, who will compete for time in the middle infield, earned secondteam All-State honors as a senior at Heritage Hills High School.

McCullough, who saw limited action in her first year of collegiate softball, is expected to compete for a starting job in 2011. USI’s list of newcomers includes three transfers and seven freshmen. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Brittany Ashton and sophomore right-handed pitcher/infielder Brandy Wright will compete for time inside the circle, while sophomore catcher/ utility player Kati O’Reilly will challenge for a spot behind the plate. Ashton transferred from John A. Logan College where she went 13-2 with a 1.55 ERA in 2010. Wright, who sat out the 2010 season, went 4-2 with a 1.28 ERA as a freshman in 2009 at Lakeland College, while O’Reilly hit .346 with 28 RBIs during her freshman season at Heartland Community College. Hatfield hit .317 with 21 RBIs as a senior at Martinsville High School and is expected to see time behind the plate in 2011. Jankowski will see time in the circle and at first base during her freshman season after hitting .467 as a senior at Hanover Central High School.

USI begins the 2011 season February 18-20 when it competes at the UAH Charger Chillout in Decatur, Alabama. The Eagles begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play March 12 and open their 18-game home schedule March 20. The GLVC Tournament returns to East Peoria, Illinois, and the EastSide Centre May 6-8, while the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament is May 12-16. The NCAA II Midwest Super-Regional is May 20-21, while the NCAA II Championship Series is May 26-30 in Salem, Virginia.

Kivett, who graduated from Plainfield High School, will see time in the middle infield during her freshman season. Nord also will see time in the infield, while Newmaster will compete for time in the outfield. Both Newmaster and Nord graduated from Tecumseh High School where they won a state championship in 2009. Sue Kunkle, Head Coach Sue Kunkle has the University of Southern Indiana softball program looking to get back to the top of the GLVC standings and into the NCAA II Tournament as she enters her 10th season at the helm of the Screaming Eagles. In 2010, Kunkle’s Eagles returned to the GLVC Tournament after a brief oneyear hiatus by going 15-12 in league play during the regular-season. Her squad finished the 2009 season on a strong note after starting the year with 11 straight losses. Her team, however, showed how good they could be when they swept the eventual NCAA II Midwest Region champion University of Indianapolis to close out the campaign.

USI also has gotten the job done in the classroom under Kunkle, with her players earning 13 Academic All-District V awards and 69 Academic All-GLVC honors. In 2005, Kunkle’s squad overcame a rough start before winning 30 of its last 42 games to finish with a 30-20 record, including a 10-8 mark in GLVC play. In the process of their strong finish, the Eagles set a school record for consecutive victories, stringing together 18 consecutive wins on the heels of an 0-8 start. Despite an up-and-down conference season, Kunkle’s squad rebounded to win three straight elimination games in the GLVC Tournament before falling to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. In 2004, Kunkle’s Eagles battled some of the top teams in Division II and jumped out to an 8-0 start in conference play before finishing the campaign with a 26-24 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the GLVC.

During the 2009 season, Kunkle’s squad defeated NCAA II Championship Series participant Le Moyne College and NCAA II Midwest sub-regional host Ashland University. In 2008, Kunkle led USI to a 31-23 overall record, 14-10 GLVC, and had the Eagles on the brink of an NCAA II Tournament berth. Despite missing the NCAA post-season, Kunkle became USI’s all-time winningest softball coach and enters 2011 with a 252-204-1 (.553) overall record. Three years ago, USI overcame injuries to post a 31-24-1 overall record, 13-10-1 GLVC, finishing fourth in the GLVC. Like most of Kunkle’s squads, the 2007 version had a strong finish as it went 9-4-1 in the final 14 games, just missing a berth in the NCAA II Great Lakes Region Tournament. In 2006, Kunkle guided her Eagles into the NCAA II Great Lakes Region Tournament for the first time since 1998. Her squad went 39-18, 17-5 GLVC, finishing third in the NCAA II Great Lakes Region Tournament. Kunkle was named the GLVC Coach of the Year after USI’s second-place finish in the GLVC during the regular season. Under Kunkle, the Eagles have consistently been at the top of the GLVC—one of the top conferences in Division II softball— during the last eight years. USI has posted one second-place finish in the GLVC Tournament as well as two third-place finishes and two fourth-place finishes in the league’s post-season tournament. In addition, Kunkle has seen her student-athletes garner one AllAmerica honor, 20 All-Region awards, and 37 All-GLVC accolades.

• 2 0 11 S O F T B A L L C O A C H I N G S T A F F • Kunkle began her coaching career as a volunteer assistant at California University of Pennsylvania. She gained a year of coaching experience at Morehead State University before being named assistant coach at Bethel Park. A four-year starter at California, Kunkle became the winningest pitcher in school history with a career record of 54-12 from 1990-94. The Vulcans earned PSAC West Championships in Kunkle’s last three seasons, and were the conference’s overall champs in 1991. An All-Region pitcher as a junior, she earned All-Conference and All-Regional Tournament honors as a senior, while leading her team to a regional championship and California’s first-ever appearance in the Division II College World Series. Kunkle, who resides in Evansville with her daughter Morgan, earned a bachelor’s degree in education from California-Pennsylvania in 1994. She received her master’s degree in sports science and coaching at Akron in 2001.

Kunkle directed the Eagles to a 27-18 overall record and a 13-7 mark in the GLVC in 2003. That squad produced six All-GLVC and four All-Great Lakes Region performers. During her first season, Kunkle led the Eagles to a second-place finish in the GLVC Tournament and to within an eyelash of a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Kunkle also set the USI record for wins by a first-year coach with a 31-18 overall record, 10-7 in the GLVC. She also has coached two USA Athletes International squads. Kunkle led her first squad to a first-place finish in Holland in the summer of 2005 and her second squad to a third-place finish in Australia in 2006. Kunkle took over the USI softball program in 2001 after a tenure at the University of Akron. In addition to her coaching duties, Kunkle teaches in the USI Physical Education Department. Kunkle helped develop some of Akron’s best hurlers, including 1998 UA Female Athlete of the Year Shelby Howell (1995-1998). She was responsible for recruiting and coordinating the team’s travel arrangements as well as organizing the Zips camps and clinics, the Dugout Club, and alumni relations.

Katie Berkemeier, Assistant Coach Katie Berkemeier begins her first season with the University of Southern Indiana softball coaching staff. She assists Head Coach Sue Kunkle in all aspects of the program. Berkemeier, who worked two years with the hitting coach for team USA standout Crystal Bustos, graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University where she was a four-year starter. During her collegiate career, Berkemeier hit .277 with 32 doubles and 63 RBIs. During her senior year in 2010, Berkemeier hit .295 with nine doubles and 25 RBIs while helping IWU to a thirdplace finish in the National Collegiate Christian Athletic Association Tournament. She hit a career-best .307 as a junior in 2009. A two-time All-Mid Central College Conference honoree, Berkemeier has spent the last four summers coaching travel teams and umpiring little league games. The Rushville, Indiana, native earned her bachelor’s degree in health promotion from IWU in May of 2010. “Katie brings new ideas to our program and helps in all areas including offense, defense, recruiting, and office management,” Kunkle said. “She wants to continue coaching in the future and is eager to get started with our program.”

Kim Dean, Assistant Coach Assistant coach Kim Dean begins her second season with the University of Southern Indiana softball coaching staff. Dean assists Head Coach Sue Kunkle in all aspects of the USI softball program. Dean played four seasons with the University of WisconsinParkside Rangers, amassing a .294 career batting average and more than 175 career hits. She also racked up more than 50 RBIs and scored more than 100 runs, while earning second-team All-GLVC honors as a sophomore in 2003. During her career, Dean played and started in nearly 200 games, helping UW-Parkside to 113 victories and 42 GLVC wins. After completing her eligibility in 2005, Dean broke into the coaching ranks as a student assistant at UW-Parkside. A native of South Elgin, Illinois, Dean earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UW-Parkside in 2006 and has spent time working in the University of North Texas intramural program. She also worked with the city of Denton, Texas, athletic programs from 2008-09. “Coach Dean is an irreplaceable part of our staff,” Kunkle said. “She is aggressive and extremely hard-working in helping with the success of this program. We are fortunate to have her on our staff.” Dean, who also teaches in the Physical Education Department at USI, is pursing a master’s degree in public administration while at USI.

USI All-Americans Amber Huse ’96 (left) is a member of USI’s inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame class after becoming the Screaming Eagles’ first All-American in 1994. From 1993-96, the Eagles’ centerfielder racked up a .373 career batting average and finished as the Screaming Eagles’ all-time leader with 10 home runs and 108 RBIs. In 1994, Huse hit .397 with three home runs, 12 doubles, seven triples, and 24 RBIs. In 1995, Huse earned second-team All-America honors when she hit .382 with two home runs, 13 doubles, a school-record 11 triples, and 42 RBIs. Lori Leonard ’98 (right) earned third-team All-America honors as a freshman in 1995 when she hit a blistering .426 with seven doubles and 17 RBIs. Her 80 hits in 1995 were among the most ever compiled in a single season by a USI player as she finished her career as the Eagles’ all-time leader with 238 hits. The two-time AllRegion performer also finished her career ranked second all-time at USI in RBIs (80) and doubles (32). Leonard’s 17 doubles in 1998 stood as the Eagles’ single-season record for seven seasons. USI All-Americans Trisha Poling ’02 (left) earned first-team All-America honors as a junior in 1998 when she hit .451 with 35 stolen bases and a single-season school-record 50 runs scored. Poling’s play during her junior year was instrumental as the Eagles went 48-17 and won their third GLVC title. Poling, the Eagles’ second baseman during her four-year career at USI, still holds the school’s all-time record for career hits (282), at-bats (735), runs scored (190), and stolen bases (147). Sara Loete ’11 (right) had one of the most memorable seasons in USI history when she racked up 10 home runs and a school-record 54 RBIs as a sophomore in 2008. Her efforts landed her on two All-America squads that season, marking the first time in the program’s history that a player had earned two All-America honors in one season. USI’s designated player from 2008-10, Loete hit .405 in 2008 and became just the second player in program history to record at least 10 home runs in one year. The 2006 USI softball team (above) finished 39-18 overall and 17-5 in the GLVC as it went on to its first NCAA II Tournament appearance since 1998.

NCAA II Tournament Appearances 2006 USI rebounded from an 0-5 start to finish with a 39-18 overall record and a 17-5 mark in the GLVC. The Eagles’ performance in the regular season earned them their first NCAA II Tournament appearance since 1998. USI, which won its first two games of the NCAA II Tournament, finished third following a heartbreaking loss to Northern Kentucky and a tough setback to SIU Edwardsville. 1998 The Eagles posted their best record in school history when they finished 48-17 overall and 22-6 in the GLVC. USI, which was third in the GLVC during the regular season, went on to win the GLVC Tournament and advance to the NCAA II Tournament for the second time in the program’s history. 1995 USI posted a 38-19 record and was 8-0 in league play as it won the GLVC Tournament for the second time in the program’s history. The Eagles advanced to the NCAA II Tournament for the first time in 1995.
