he University of Southern Indiana volleyball team is looking to make history when it takes the court in 2011. With nine players, including All-Region and All-Great Lakes Valley Conference senior middle blocker Danielle LaGrange returning in 2011, seventh-year Head Coach Leah Mercer has her Screaming Eagles eyeing their second straight trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament after qualifying for the program’s third trip to the big dance a year ago. If the Eagles can qualify for the NCAA II Tournament in 2011, it would be the first time in the program’s history that USI has reached the national tournament in consecutive seasons. Mercer, who is just 11 wins shy of becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach, directed USI to an 18-12 overall mark and a 10-4 mark in GLVC play. The Eagles finished third in the GLVC standings before grabbing an at-large bid into NCAA post-season.

A big reason for the excitement surrounding the Eagles’ program is the return of LaGrange, who finished second in the GLVC in kills (3.53) and points (4.11) per set a year ago. USI’s juniors include outside hitter Abbi Williams, right side hitter Emily Meyer, and setter Ashley King. Williams, who played in all 30 of USI’s matches last year, averaged nearly two kills per contest during her sophomore season and will be counted on to fill the void left due to the graduation of All-Region and All-GLVC outside hitter Brittani Oliver.
Sophomore middle blocker Emily Diedrich also made a big impact for the Eagles during her first season as she was second on the team with 0.69 blocks per set while racking up 1.64 kills per set and a .295 attacking percentage.
Meyer, who will compete for a starting job after playing in 18 matches a year ago, averaged 1.13 kills per set last season. King, who also will compete for more playing time after seeing action in 14
Mercer counted heavily on her freshman class last year and expects that group to excel during their sophomore seasons. Setter Jorae Bradbury was fifth in the GLVC with 10.02 assists per set last season and was the top freshman in assists.
In addition to Bradbury and Diedrich, USI’s sophomore class includes defensive specialist Kayla Heldman and outside hitter Kristy Gerardot. Heldman averaged 3.48 digs per set, including 4.55 digs per set as USI’s starting libero, a position she held for the second half of gousieagles.com

Head Coach Leah Mercer Leah Mercer ’02 enters her seventh season as the head coach of the USI volleyball program after leading the Screaming Eagles to NCAA II Tournament for the first time since 2004 and the third time in the program’s history. In 2010, Mercer became second coach in the program’s history to reach the 100-win plateau as she guided her squad to an 18-12 overall record and a 10-4 mark in GLVC play, good enough for third in the conference’s regular-season standings. In addition, Mercer’s Eagles advanced to the GLVC Tournament semifinals for the third straight season and the eighth time in 11 years. Mercer, who ranks second all-time with 105 career victories at the helm of the USI volleyball program, led her squad to an 18-14 overall mark, 9-5 in the GLVC, in 2009. Three years ago, Mercer brought the Eagles back to the GLVC Championship for the first time in four years and the sixth time since 2000. Her squad was 18-15 overall, 9-8 in the GLVC, and finished third in the GLVC West Division. The Eagles won six of their final eight matches, including upset wins over nationallyranked Northern Kentucky University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
She helped guide the Ramblers to a 22-9 overall record and a 10-4 mark in the Horizon League. Loyola won the Horizon League Tournament championship and qualified for the NCAA Division I Tournament before falling to the University of Wisconsin in the first round. Prior to her one-year stint at Loyola, Mercer spent a year as a graduate assistant coach at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She helped lead the Bobcats to a 28-5 overall record, the MidAmerican Conference regular-season and tournament titles, and the program’s first-ever berth in the NCAA I Tournament. Mercer, who started her coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Purdue University in 2002, was a two-time All-GLVC performer and helped lead the Eagles to a three-year record of 61-27, including a 49-14 mark as a junior and senior. She averaged 3.1 kills per game during her three seasons of collegiate volleyball. Mercer also averaged 5.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in two seasons with USI’s women’s basketball program. Mercer, who has a bachelor’s degree in physical education (teaching K-12) and a master’s degree in recreation and sports science (coaching education), is the Screaming Eagles’ 11th head coach in the history of the program.
Throughout Mercer’s career with the Eagles’, USI has been among the GLVC’s best teams at the net. Her squad led the GLVC and was eighth in the nation with 2.43 blocks per set in 2008. The Eagles’ 454 block assists in 2008 eclipsed the program’s alltime record, which was set the previous year when USI amassed 450 block assists. In 2007, Mercer’s squad finished 15-14 overall and was fourth in the GLVC West Division with a 9-10 conference mark. The 2007 Eagles set season records for digs (2,147) and block assists. Mercer led the Eagles to a sixth-place finish in the GLVC regularseason standings with a 17-11 overall mark, 9-7 GLVC, in 2006. In the Great Lakes Region, the Eagles knocked off eventual region champion Ashland early in the season. In 2005, Mercer led her squad to a 19-13 overall record and an 11-5 mark in the GLVC. Her squad also posted wins over fifthranked North Alabama and 11th-ranked Northern Michigan. A native of Evansville and a 2002 graduate of USI, Mercer served Loyola University (Chicago) as the top assistant coach in 2004. 10

Assistant Coach Kathleen Yony Kathleen Yony is entering her first season with the University of Southern Indiana volleyball coaching staff and will assist Head Coach Leah Mercer in all aspects of the Screaming Eagles’ program.
Yony, who graduated from Nova Southeastern in 2011 with her bachelor’s degree in psychology, will be seeking her master’s degree in social work while at USI.
A native of Miami, Florida, Yony comes to USI after a stellar career at Nova Southeastern University that saw her set the school’s all-time record with 1,721 digs. In 2009, Yony earned All-Sunshine State Conference honors as well as AVCA All-South Region accolades after helping Nova Southeastern to the NCAA II Tournament. Yony, who helped Nova Southeastern claim the NCAA II South Region title as a sophomore in 2008, earned tryouts with the U.S. National Team following her sophomore and junior seasons. As a coach, Yony has worked with a pair of club teams, the Tribe Volleyball Club (Deerfield Beach, Florida) and the Boomer’s Volleyball Club (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), since 2008. She was the Head Coach for the Boomers Elite 12 team and an assistant coach for the Boomers Elite 13 squad as well as the Tribe Elite 17 team. “I’m excited to have someone join our staff with the type of resume that Kathleen brings to the table,” Mercer said. “She’s a winner and an accomplished athlete; and I look forward to her experiences contributing to our continued success at USI. Kathleen will assist in all areas, but will work closely with our defense.”
