depth and a spark off the bench in key situations throughout her first three years in a USI uniform. Her 33 assists helped the Eagles end nationally-ranked Lewis’s 45match regular-season home winning streak.
Excitement and expectations are high, and rightfully so, as the Screaming Eagles return four starters and 10 letter winners from a squad that was 20-11 overall and 14-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play a year ago.
Meyer had a breakthrough season last year when she recorded 0.48 service aces and 2.37 points per set. Her play on the opposite side provided the Eagles with a strong offensive presence in 2011 as she averaged 1.62 kills per set, including a career-high 13 in USI’s four-set win over Missouri S&T.
Head Coach Leah Mercer ’02, already the program’s winningest coach as she enters her eighth season at the helm, has three seniors, four juniors, three sophomores, and five freshmen to mold together as she looks to have the Eagles in contention for a GLVC and NCAA II Midwest Region title. USI’s senior class consists of setter Ashley King, right side hitter Emily Meyer, and outside hitter Abbi Williams. King, who averaged 9.00 assists per set a year ago, has provided the Eagles with 8

Williams, who played a major role in USI’s surge into the 2010 NCAA II Tournament, saw limited time a year ago after spending the 2011 off-season recovering from a knee injury. She averaged nearly two kills per set as a sophomore when she played in 30 matches for the Eagles. USI’s offense has run through the finger tips of junior setter Jorae Bradbury during the last two seasons, and if the Eagles are going to continue their climb toward the
top of the GLVC and the Midwest Region, her play will be a key factor. Bradbury recorded more than 1,000 assists during her sophomore campaign in 2011 and is averaging more than 10 assists per set during her first two years in a USI uniform. In addition to Bradbury, USI’s junior class includes middle blocker Emily Diedrich, outside hitter Kristy Gerardot, and libero Kayla Heldman. Diedrich, who had eight kills, a .375 attacking percentage, and three blocks in USI’s four-set loss to Indianapolis in the opening round of the NCAA II Tournament a year ago, has been a force at the net for the Eagles during her first two years. She was second on the team and 10th in the GLVC a year ago with a .296 attacking percentage, while her 0.83 blocks per set also ranked second on the team. Gerardot saw a significant increase in playing time during her sophomore season as she averaged 1.23 kills and 1.31 blocks per set gousieagles.com

Junior middle blocker Emily Diedrich (left) and senior right side hitter Emily Meyer (right) will be two of the primary targets for junior setter Jorae Bradbury (middle) in 2012. Bradbury averaged more than 10 assists per set a year ago, while Diedrich racked up a .296 attacking percentage and 0.83 blocks per set. Meyer, who was second in the GLVC with 0.48 service aces per set last year, had a breakout season as a junior when she amassed 2.37 points per frame. in 20 matches a year ago. She had a seasonhigh 12 kills in USI’s three-set win over Upper Iowa and racked up eight kills and 18 digs in USI’s win at Lewis.
Bowden recorded 201 digs and 2.7 digs per frame as a senior at Minooka Community High School (Minooka, Illinois), helping her squad to back-to-back regional titles.
Heldman has continued to give the Eagles a strong presence in the back row since taking over the libero duties as a freshman in 2010. Last season, Heldman became the first player since 2007 to eclipse the 400dig plateau as she finished the year with 404, including a season-best 24 in USI’s five-set victory over Wisconsin-Parkside.
Goldschmidt was an honorable mention AllState performer and one of the St. Louis area leaders in digs after recording 544 as a senior at Gibault High School (Waterloo, Illinois).
The emergence of sophomore outside hitters Lauren DeShaney and Fawn Ryan was crucial in USI’s NCAA II Tournament run last year. DeShaney was second on the team in kills (265), kills per set (2.82), and points (314) in her first year of collegiate volleyball, while Ryan was third on the team kills (213) and kills per set (2.09) as a freshman. Sophomore middle blocker Ashley Rakers rounds out USI’s returning players after recording 1.50 kills, 1.50 blocks, and 2.25 points per set in two matches a year ago. With coaches having the ability to use 15 substitutions per set instead of 12, freshmen defensive specialists Haley Bowden and Erin Goldschmidt figure to compete for playing time immediately. gousieagles.com
The biggest question mark for the Eagles entering the 2012 season is the replacement of GLVC Player of the Year and AVCA All-American middle blocker Danielle LaGrange ’12, who led USI in attacking percentage, kills, blocks, and points as a senior in 2011. Mercer brought in a pair of freshmen middle blockers—Molly King and Abbey Winter— to help fill the void left by LaGrange. King, who red-shirted at Division I Cleveland State in 2011, was a two-time All-State and All-Area honoree at Lafayette Central Catholic High School (Lafayette, Indiana). Her 2.46 kills and 0.69 blocks per set as a senior helped LCCHS to the 2010 IHSAA Class A state championship. Winter, a high school teammate of Rakers, helped lead Mater Dei High School (Breese, Illinois) to two straight IHSA Class 3A state championships. She recorded more than
200 kills and 160 blocks during her senior campaign as MDHS finished the year with a 39-3 record. Rounding out USI’s newcomers is freshman right side hitter Erica Oberbroeckling, who earned second-team All-State honors as a senior at Westfield High School after averaging 2.96 kills and 3.67 digs per set. She amassed more than 500 kills in her final two prep seasons and helped lead WHS to a sectional and regional title in 2011. USI, which begins the season with classicstyle tournaments in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Rolla, Missouri, opens its 11match home schedule September 11 against Cedarville. The Eagles start GLVC play with three straight home matches before hitting the road for a four-match trip that includes visits to Indianapolis and Lewis. The GLVC/GLIAC Crossover is October 12-13 in Aurora, Illinois, and is sandwiched between USI’s four-match swing against the GLVC West Division. The final 10 matches of the regular season see the Eagles host five contests, including home bouts against Indianapolis and Lewis.

Leah MERCER
Head Coach | 8th Year | University of Southern Indiana ‘02 | Evansville, IN
MEET LEAH MERCER Leah Mercer ’02 enters her eighth season as the head coach of the USI volleyball program after leading the Screaming Eagles to the NCAA II Tournament in 2010 and 2011. Last year, Mercer became the all-time winningest coach in the program’s history as she guided the Eagles to a 20-11 overall mark and a 14-4 record in GLVC play. Her Eagles finished in a tie for third in the powerful GLVC East Division before advancing to the NCAA II Tournament for the second consecutive year and the fourth time in the program’s history. In 2010, Mercer became second coach in the program’s history to reach the 100-win plateau as she led her squad to an 18-12 overall record and a 10-4 mark in GLVC play, good enough for third in the conference’s regular-season standings. In addition, Mercer’s Eagles advanced to the GLVC Tournament semifinals for the third straight season and the eighth time in 11 years and to the NCAA II Tournament for the first time since 2004. Mercer, who has 125 career victories at the helm of the USI volleyball program, led her squad to an 18-14 overall mark, 9-5 in the GLVC, in 2009. Four years ago, Mercer brought the Eagles back to the GLVC Championship for the first time in four years and the sixth time since 2000. Her squad was 18-15 overall, 9-8 in the GLVC, and finished third in the GLVC West Division. The Eagles won six of their final eight matches, including upset wins over nationally-ranked Northern Kentucky University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Throughout Mercer’s career with the Eagles, USI has been among the GLVC’s best teams at the net. Her squad led the GLVC and was eighth in the nation with 2.43 blocks per set in 2008. 10

• 2 012 V O L L E Y B A L L C O A C H I N G S TA F F • The Eagles’ 454 block assists in 2008 eclipsed the program’s alltime record, which was set the previous year when USI amassed 450 block assists. In 2007, Mercer’s squad finished 15-14 overall and was fourth in the GLVC West Division with a 9-10 conference mark. The 2007 Eagles set season records for digs (2,147) and block assists.
Mercer, who has a bachelor’s degree in physical education (teaching K-12) and a master’s degree in recreation and sports science (coaching education), is the Screaming Eagles’ 11th head coach in the history of the program.
Mercer led the Eagles to a sixth-place finish in the GLVC regularseason standings with a 17-11 overall mark, 9-7 GLVC, in 2006. In the Great Lakes Region, the Eagles knocked off eventual region champion Ashland early in the season. In 2005, Mercer led her squad to a 19-13 overall record and an 11-5 mark in the GLVC. Her squad also posted wins over fifthranked North Alabama and 11th-ranked Northern Michigan. A native of Evansville and a 2002 graduate of USI, Mercer served Loyola University (Chicago) as the top assistant coach in 2004. She helped guide the Ramblers to a 22-9 overall record and a 10-4 mark in the Horizon League. Loyola won the Horizon League Tournament championship and qualified for the NCAA Division I Tournament before falling to the University of Wisconsin in the first round. Prior to her one-year stint at Loyola, Mercer spent a year as a graduate assistant coach at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She helped lead the Bobcats to a 28-5 overall record, the MidAmerican Conference regular-season and tournament titles, and the program’s first-ever berth in the NCAA I Tournament. Mercer, who started her coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Purdue University in 2002, was a two-time All-GLVC performer and helped lead the Eagles to a three-year record of 61-27, including a 49-14 mark as a junior and senior. She averaged 3.1 kills per set during her three seasons of collegiate volleyball. Mercer also averaged 5.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in two seasons with USI’s women’s basketball program.
