USI’s Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education helps you explore the latest scientific, mathematical, technical and education knowledge, while experiencing hands-on training through field work, student teaching, research and community outreach. Our state-of-the-art equipment, instrumentation and advanced manufacturing machinery for science and engineering is current and comprehensive. Innovation, like the Children’s Learning Center for early childhood education majors, gives you the knowledge you’ll need to succeed in a competitive job market. Through a strong partnership with USI’s Romain College of Business, you’ll follow the development of innovative ideas from lab testing to market research. Our ongoing relationships with local schools and partnerships with internationally renowned corporations provide real-world opportunities, experiences and professional development, while strengthening campus and community ties.

POINTS OF PRIDE Our Applied Engineering Center features equipment found nowhere else in the country, and is a learning factory for students in engineering, advanced manufacturing and industrial supervision programs. In the last five years, the College has received more than $8 million in external support, including grants and contracts. Pott College houses the Southwest Indiana STEM Resource Center (SwISTEM). The College received over $850,000 for the Teaching Eagles Scholarship Program to recruit and retain STEM educators.

The College of Nursing and Health Professions offers 10 academic programs providing challenging and innovative learning experiences, excellent clinical and internship opportunities and a wide array of activities that allow you to engage with the community. More than 800 designated healthcare facilities across the United States, and internationally, provide real-life clinical practice experience. You’ll interact with our diverse and highly experienced faculty, many with specialized credentialing in their professions.

POINTS OF PRIDE Interprofessional education activities are available, including a state-of-the-art Simulation Center that provides students in multiple disciplines the opportunity to participate in collaborative clinical experiences. Graduates who earn degrees offered by the College consistently score above state and national averages on credentialing examinations. As a result, many report employment immediately upon graduation and experience success in their professional fields.

The College established three community health centers at Lodge, Glenwood and Cedar Hall. The inner-city primary care nursing-managed clinics are designed to increase community healthcare services. The College implemented Designated Education Units in St. Mary’s Medical Center and Deaconess Health System, offering an innovative clinical learning environment for multiple disciplines.

As one of only 15 percent of the world’s business schools with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation, the Romain College of Business is dedicated to your development, both academically and professionally. The Romain College of Business is housed in the 76,800-square-foot Business and Engineering Center, which opened in 2010.

POINTS OF PRIDE USI Performing Arts offers an educational experience few undergraduate programs can match. Many students have the opportunity to work with professional artists through a direct relationship with New Harmony Theatre, a nationally-respected regional Equity theatre. USI’s new teaching theatre opens in fall of 2014. The Shield, USI’s student newspaper, won Division II Newspaper of the Year for the second year in a row. The Edge/WSWI, USI radio, won two national awards from the 2014 BEA Festival of Arts, including second place for On Air Personality and honorable mention for Radio Newscast. UNIVERSITY DIVISION If you are new to USI and have a broad range of interests, University Division is a place to explore all USI has to offer. Incoming freshmen often take advantage of University Division to help determine courses of study that are right for them. University Division will help guide you toward your educational goals and advise you on course selection that will lead to success while you complete University Core Curriculum requirements. You’ll have access to the same amenities and services enjoyed by students who have already declared majors. We understand the transition process for those entering college and will work with you on time management, problem solving and career exploration. With a University-sponsored writing lab and an academic skills division, you’ll have the resources needed to choose your major while earning college credit.

HONORS PROGRAM If you are academically motivated, talented and looking for an intellectual challenge, the Honors Program is the right fit for you. It is selective, demanding and rewarding, and caters to those who are prepared to invest extra effort to meet the challenge. As an honors student, you’ll benefit from smaller classes, close contact with faculty, grants to study abroad, research opportunities, exciting extracurricular activities and residing in the Honors Living-Learning Community. HANDS-ON EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING The USI Service Learning Program enables students to engage in community-based service experiences that are integrated into the academic curriculum. Each semester, approximately 78 different service learning courses are offered that represent a variety of academic disciplines. As an education student, you’ll tutor at local schools; nursing and health professions students provide care at free health clinics; communication studies majors participate in literacy programs with the Boys and Girls Club; and criminal justice students work with at-risk youth. Structured service opportunities allow you to develop critical academic and leadership skills while learning social responsibility and service. These experiences strengthen your resumÊ and make you more marketable upon completion of your degree.

CAMPUS LIFE Campus life at the University of Southern Indiana is represented by student clubs and organizations; experiential learning, service and volunteer opportunities; recreation and fitness events; education and fine art events; and entertainment. There are plenty of ways to engage in your campus community and connect with other students with similar interests. You can be a deejay on WSWI, the campus radio station; spread the news as a journalist or editorialist for the student-published newspaper The Shield; hone your acting or technical skills by joining one of the many campus theatre productions; or volunteer in the local community. At USI, we provide you with a wide range of opportunities to experiment with the depth of your interests and talents. Just want to relax and merely participate as a spectator? USI also sponsors a variety of student-centered events, like free-of-charge movie nights, musical performances, a Core Speaker Series on timely topics, novelty entertainment and many exhibits throughout the campus. Clubs and Organizations There are absolutely no excuses for being bored at USI. There are over 120 student clubs and organizations at USI that represent a wide range of interests such as academic and professional organizations, special interest clubs, club sports, and social, political and religious organizations. Fraternity and Sorority Life Being a member of a fraternity or sorority at USI is about making friendships that will last far beyond your college years and committing yourself to scholarship, leadership and service. It is about being respected for your individuality while being part of a brotherhood or sisterhood with individuals who share the same goals and values. Your brothers and sisters are there to support you, not just through your college years but throughout your entire life. Food Services USI has a wide variety of dining options conveniently located within walking distance of on-campus housing, labs/classrooms and many off-campus apartments. They vary from full-course dining to on-the-go snacks. Dining on campus gives you the opportunity to gather with friends, take study breaks, hang out, relax and unwind after a hard day of classes and activities. Meal plans or pre-paid food service accounts make dining convenient and affordable.

HOUSING AND RESIDENCE LIFE Students take advantage of our affordable, modern residential facilities. Four suite-style residence halls—Newman Hall, Governors Hall, O’Bannon Hall and Ruston Hall—offer incoming freshmen a traditional campus living environment. Ruston Hall and O’Bannon Hall house USI’s nine LivingLearning Communities exclusively for first-year students. At the heart of the campus apartment area is the Residence Life Community Center, a state-ofthe-art building with a large shared living room, an expanded convenience store with pizza delivery, wireless Internet and a laundry room. Campus apartment housing facilities include the Joseph E. O’Daniel Apartments and the Frank F. McDonald Apartments.

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES At USI, we believe that freshmen who have similar interests, goals and academic programs can benefit from living on designated floors within the residence halls. We call them Living Learning Communities (LLCs). They help create a strong link between your life in the residence hall and your classroom learning experience. If you reside on an LLC floor, you’ll enjoy all the same amenities as other residents with the added benefit of an enriched living experience. University departments sponsor LLCs and help organize programs, activities and events that highlight the LLC’s major or area of interest. CLUB SPORTS So you want to play sports at a higher level than intramural, but not quite at the NCAA division level? Then club sports are for you. USI club teams play against teams from other colleges and universities in sports that include rugby, Ultimate Frisbee and Quidditch.

RECREATION, FITNESS AND WELLNESS Staying active is a concept that brings many students together on campus, whether it’s a pick-up game of basketball, group exercise class or intramural activity. The heart of recreation activity on campus is the Recreation, Fitness and Wellness Center. Nature Trails USI’s campus has a series of paved and unpaved trails for students to enjoy. Evansville Attractions: AROUND TOWN Situated on the banks of the Ohio River, Evansville is a mid-sized city that welcomes USI students and offers them plenty of things to do. The Ford Center, a 10,000-seat downtown arena, is the home of Evansville’s hockey team, the IceMen. Traveling Broadway shows and feature performances and concerts come to the various entertainment venues. For a relaxing walk or invigorating run, the downtown riverfront features a greenway with a view of the changing river traffic and the Evansville skyline. Movie theatres (including an IMAX) and Swonder Ice Arena draw students together for fun, activity and fellowship. Evansville’s coffee shops, restaurants, historic district, museums and shopping areas also are places where students like to spend time. Less than three miles from campus, shopping centers and restaurants are plentiful. USI’s suburban location in the rolling hills of western Vanderburgh County is just minutes away from all that Evansville has to offer.

SCHOLARSHIPS The University of Southern Indiana awards millions of dollars in scholarships and waiver awards each year. Scholarships are awarded based on academic record, financial need or a combination of each. Scholarships are generally considered merit-based aid, and recipients are selected based on academic achievement or a specific talent.

GETTING STARTED—ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS If you’re an incoming freshman, you’ll be interested in Student Development Programs. They know how important it is to make a smooth transition. The University’s New Student Orientation Program will bring you and your family to campus prior to your first semester of classes to begin the transition to the University and register for your first semester of classes. Orientation is designed to introduce your intended academic major program of study, campus resources, the advising and registration process and other new students. Student Development Programs offers a wide range of activities and services that will get you involved and off to a great start at USI before classes begin. Here are some of the programs or services you can connect with: Archie’s Scoop—A newsletter for incoming freshmen designed to help students get to know their new school and inform them about the activities planned for Welcome Week. Welcome Week—A set of programs designed to help new students get acquainted with campus, meet faculty and other new students, learn about their academic college and have fun. Camp Eagle—A three-day adventure, where incoming students participate in challenging outdoor exercises, team-building activities, educational sessions and opportunities to learn leadership skills and how they can make a difference at the University of Southern Indiana and in their community.
