World Dairy Expo Highlights

Jersey breeders were recognized with several of the dairy industry’s top show awards at World Dairy Expo (WDE) in Madison, Wis., in October. Ken Melvold of Fresno, Calif., was named the 78th recipient of the Klussendorf Award, the highest recognition given to a dairy cattle showman. His experience in the show ring started with 4-H projects and progressed to work with some of the industry’s most iconic herds, including Bottema Farm (Indiana), Dreamstreet (New York), Champ Goodwood (Missouri) and Willomonte (Nevada). He also managed hundreds of sales across the U.S. for all dairy breeds. Dean Dohle was honored with the 29th Klussendorf-MacKenzie Award. He and his family operate Starstruck Dairy, a mixedbreed herd in Halfway, Mo. Though he grew up on a beef and hog operation, he found his lifelong vocation in the dairy industry at WDE at 21 yearsof-age, walking the barns and looking for work. He has not missed the exposition in the 27 years since, on the halter of many prize winThe Hills ners, including Oak Grove Nikolia, a Grand Champion Milking Shorthorn. Dohle has also judged shows in 28 states and Mexico. He has twice officiated the International Brown Swiss show at WDE and judged six breeds at the North American International Livestock Exposition, including the All American Jersey Show in 2017 and the National Jersey Jug Futurity in 2012.

Dean Dohle, left, Dr. Sheila McGuirk and Ken Melvold were honored with Klussendorf awards at World Dairy Expo.

Vostad Honored by South Dakota State University

Ann Vostad, Volga, S.D., was one of four individuals recognized with the Eminent Leaders in Agriculture award by South Dakota State University at a banquet in September. Vostad’s main passions—the dairy industry and youth—have been fulfilled through her work as morning milker for Post Lane Dairy the past 26 years and substitute teacher and volunteer for the Sioux Valley School District the past 24 years. She and her husband, Kevin, returned to her family dairy farm to milk Registered Jerseys and then dispersed the herd in December 1994. Today, they operate a small herd with their children, Stephanie Mattson, Ashley Seifert and Thorwald Vostad, and travel the youth show circuit with their grandchildren. Ann has also been an officer for the South Dakota Jersey Cattle Association, helps with FFA and 4-H and writes sports stories for the local newspaper, a service she’s done for the past 15 years.

Overlooked Benefits For 25 years, the REAP program—registration, Equity, appraisal, performance—has helped Jersey herd owners operate more efficiently and be more profitable. Often times, staff might be talking to a breeder only to discover one or another of the program’s benefits isn’t being utilized. Now, in all fairness, everyone is busy and it’s probably been some time since you took a look at the long list of services included with REAP. As a new year is just around the corner, now would be a great time to review what is included in REAP, to make sure you aren’t missing out on one or another of its benefits. Registration If registered before reaching six (6) months of age, calves born in REAP herds—female and male—are registered by the AJCA for no additional fees. You just have to send the registration application in, log onto infoJersey.com, connect via JerseyLink, use the Excel spreadsheet on USJersey.com or another usable electronic format, and that’s it. REAP herds earn discount pricing on JerseyTags, the tamper-evident eartags that meet requirements for permanent registration ID, as well as the nextGen TSU kits from Allflex, for taking tissue samples for BVD-PI testing and genotyping. Speaking of genotyping, REAP herds can order the Jersey uLD genotyping test for $28, a $10 savings from the regular price. Transfer fees are also lower. REAP herds save $2.00 on a female transfer if filed within 60 days of the sale date. If it’s a bull, the transfer is processed at no cost during those 60 days. As well, the more females transferred from your herd, the more you save. Equity This is membership in National All-Jersey Inc., which provides a wealth of specialized milk marketing services. NAJ represents Jersey interests on various issues at the plant, state and national levels and is a respected voice across the industry. Equity delivers current milk and dairy market information though the Weekly Market Update and the Equity Newsletter. NAJ staff are available for personal assistance according to your needs for business planning or market access. If you are direct marketing Jersey milk products, your Equity membership gives

you the opportunity to brand your products with either the Queen of Quality® or All-Jersey® labels. Appraisal and Performance REAP includes Total Performance Evaluation-Plus or TPE-Basic, depending upon your preference for DHI records disclosure. Either way, here’s what is included. • Type Traits Appraisal for your cows on a 7- to 10-month schedule. • Completed lactations are added to the AJCA database for pedigrees, and Quarterly Lactation Summary reports are sent by your choice of mail or electronically. • PTA reports are produced after each USDA genetic evaluation run. Monthly evaluations are released for genotyped females and genotyped bulls under 24 months of age. These are available online 24/7 at HerdView, a part of infoJersey. View all of your herds information with this management tool as part of REAP. • Official Performance Pedigrees (OPPs) are automatically issued when calves are registered and cows complete their lactations. You can choose to get OPPs only when calves are registered, or only when cows complete lactations, or not at all. In any of those cases, you receive a credit that you can apply to getting pedigrees on demand from infoJersey.com. You also get to take advantage of the JerseyMate™ computerized mating service for cows and heifers at no additional charge. You can access it any time day or night at infoJersey.com with a User Name and Password. Or you an contact the AJCA to have JerseyMate™ run for your cows and heifers.

Jersey Journal REAP enrollment includes one-year subscription— in your mailbox—to the Jersey Journal, the only monthly publication in the world devoted to the Jersey breed. You also qualify for a special discount on Journal advertising. If you’re not using REAP to its fullest potential, or at all, give it some thought and give us a call. We’ll be happy to explain how our best bundle package of services will help increase your returns from your Registered Jerseys™.

HERD MANAGEMENT Jer-Z-Boyz Ranch Shares Secrets to Reproductive Success

M

aintaining consistent, high pregnancy rates is no easy feat for even the most skillful producers. While there is no easy single formula to guarantee results on any given operation, different tips, tricks and technologies can help greatly improve the odds of getting more conceptions and healthy calves with each breeding. Daniel de Graaf of Jer-Z-Boyz Ranch in Pixley, Calif., was among four panelists at the 2019 Western Dairy Management Conference held in Reno, Nev. Each was a herd manager who has received either platinum gold, silver or bronze Reproduction Awards by the Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC). Corey Geiger, editor of Hoard’s Dairyman, moderated the discussion. De Graaf offered his Jersey-specific insights on maximizing the breed’s well-known reproductive efficiencies. The de Graaf family, who was awarded platinum honors from the DCRC for maintaining a pregnancy rate over 40%, summarizes “Jerseys, cow comfort and a passion for doing everything right” as the key to a reproductively successful herd. In 1995 they made the switch from Holsteins to Jerseys. They now milk over 4,000 cows in their all-Jersey herd. With multiple proven bulls in A.I., de Graaf cites their breeding philosophy as simple as “protecting what the Jersey cow is good at.” “For us, that’s components, longevity and fertility,” said de Graaf. “Those are some of the key traits that we try to continue to build into our herd. We brought cows in from 11 different states in that core group back in 1995 and 1996. We had a pretty mixed bag of different genetics coming into our herd. Even with all that, we’ve tried to keep the Jersey cow what she is.” All the dairies on the panel used different reproductive technologies to meet their needs and achieve the best rates possible. It takes a combination of digital and medical technologies to truly maximize efficiency and eliminate errors. Jer-Z-Boyz has been using embryo transfer and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) technologies for years, something which de Graaf considers “a learning process.” He noted Jersey IVF embryos don’t

Page 18

respond to Ovsynch treatments the same way as Holstein embryos. This makes it especially difficult because all the industry standard data is based off black and white breed research. They’ve found their best results from trial and error with their own breed-specific work in both the lab and in the field. For example, they don’t use cows that are six days past their last heat for recipients. They’ve found that they need to be seven or eight instead. Experimenting with different culture mediums for growth and stimulation by the labs has also been helpful in procuring viable embryos. One trait that’s played a big role in both sire and cow family selection is daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), de Graaf noted. They’ve found it correlates well to fertility and successful IVF transfers. “We have done Jerseys on both ends of the bell curve as it relates to DPR,” he said. “The genetic/genomic predictions hold true when it comes to getting results on flush day.” The use of sexed semen and beef semen was a common theme on all the dairies on the panel. As did his fellow panelists, de Graaf cited using sexed semen as the choice of first and second service for all heifers and certain cows followed by conventional. Beef semen added a lot of value to unwanted bull calves, especially for the large dairies. De Graaf said he breeds 30% of the herd to Wagyu beef semen. This keeps their heifer inventory low which works best with their current business model. The overall goal is to

create the most profitable calf possible, and that means avoiding pure Jersey bull calves who have very little market value. Long term, this makes the farm more profitable. Management practices were really what tied everything together for all producers on the panel. Each discussed how they tie in their personalized management styles to complement their breeding philosophies and technologies. Jer-Z-Boyz uses DairyComp to keep their records. This keeps information at the fingertips of everyone involved with the herd. It’s also a great system for identifying issues so they can be corrected in a timely manner. For his Jersey herd, de Graaf works with the breed’s strong fertility traits to optimize on pregnancies. The farm practices strict breeding protocols for each age group of cows. For example, aged cows on their fifth lactation and greater can be bred beginning at 80 days in milk. Middle aged cows, on their third or fourth lactation, are bred at 70 days in milk and young first and second lactation animals are bred at 60 days. Cows who do not breed are then enrolled on Ovsynch. Besides the reproductive advantages, de Graaf notes they’ve seen a little more of a persistent lactation curve. At the end of the day, the numbers at JerZ-Boyz dairy speaks for themselves. The heifer herd is in the high 40% range on first and second service sexed semen. That (continued to page 20)

Daniel de Graaf of Jer-Z-Boyz Ranch, far right during the Western Dairy Herd Management Conference, cited “protecting what the Jersey cow is good at” as the basis of his breeding philosophy. That includes the components, longevity and fertility which the breed is known for.

percentage goes up when conventional beef semen is used. Milk cows are in the mid-to-high 30% range on the first two services of sexed semen, but also have a higher conception rate with conventional beef semen. De Graaf notes his farm’s program is a lot of work to do correctly, but for success “there is never a good reason to cut corners.”

Proposals Sought For Jersey Cattle And Product Research The AJCC Research Foundation has issued a request for research proposals to be funded in 2020 addressing significant issues for the Jersey breed and Jersey milk producers. Current priorities for research funding are: • Nutrition of high-producing Jerseys, particularly practical feeding methods to maximize production of valuable milk components; • Factors affecting management of Jersey calves; • Factors affecting semen production of Jersey bulls; • Factors affecting yield and/or quality of products manufactured from Jersey milk; • Factors affecting economic impact of Jerseys: efficiencies, net income, longevity, and lifetime profit; • Optimizing the genetic basis for improving animal health and/or enhancing product quality; • Enhancing environmental impact associated with Jerseys; • New technologies for safe and sustainable food production from Jersey cattle; and • Feasibility of adding value and increasing consumer acceptance of Jersey-derived products through enhanced product quality and branding. Application deadline is December 1, 2019. The Research Advisory Committee of the American Jersey Cattle Association will evaluate the proposals, then forward its recommendations to the AJCA Board of Directors, which will award funds at its meeting in March 2020. Submissions are evaluated for (a) merit (e.g., potential to advance practical knowledge, creative approach to the problem); (b) competence (i.e., high probability of successful completion within the proposed time frame); and (c) relevance (e.g., problem derived from one of the areas of research priority). Since 1988, the Foundation has awarded more than $900,000 in seed money for selected projects. Juniors Recognized at Annual Iowa Cattle Club Summer Picnic

Junior members were honored in an awards ceremony during the summer picnic held by the Iowa Jersey Cattle Club (IJCC) on June 15, 2019. Robert and Patricia Horst hosted the event on their farm, Grand Central Jerseys, in Bristow. The Iowa Jersey Youth Achievement Award—the club’s highest junior honor— was presented to Mary Holtz, Maquoketa. The daughter of Jeff and Lisa Holtz, Holtz View Farms, Maquoketa, will receive a Registered Jersey heifer calf donated by an Iowa Jersey breeder, for winning the award. Mary was the 2018 Iowa Jersey Princess and a member of the recent sixth class of Jersey Youth Academy. She is a high school senior and active in many school activities including bowling, soccer and band. Mary is serving as her 4-H club president and active with her local FFA chapter. She is also on her county council and active showing her cattle on the local, state and national levels. Mary, a high school senior, is taking college classes and will have completed her associate’s degree upon her graduation. She has plans to attend Iowa State University and go onto vet school where she hopes to specialize in embryo transfer and in-vitro fertilization. Meghan Hettinga of Orange City was crowned as 2019 Iowa Jersey Princess. The daughter of Jason and Mary Hettinga is a sophomore at South Dakota State University majoring in dairy production with a focus on community and leadership. She has participated in the Hawkeye Pot of Gold Contest multiple times earning first place in 2014 and runner-up in 2017. Earlier this year, she was also selected to participate in Jersey Youth Academy. In high school, Meghan was president of her FFA chapter and earned her state

degree. She was also a member of National Honor Society, sat on student council and volunteered with the REACH program. She played volleyball and track and field, competing in shot put and discus at the state meet and the well-known Drake Relays. She also earned a spot on the track team at college. She plans to find a career which allows her to represent the dairy industry and better educate the public about dairy products and production. The recipient of this year’s IJCC Memorial Scholarship was Grace Howe. She is the daughter of Shelly and the late Matt Howe, Waukon. Grace is a freshman at Iowa State University studying ag business. An active member of the state and national cattle associations, she has served as Alternate Iowa Dairy Princess, Iowa Dairy Princess, Iowa Jersey Princess and Allamakee County Dairy Princess. As well, she placed 10th in the National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest and will be recognized at the Junior Banquet during the All American events held in Louisville, Ky. Business Meeting In the business meeting, members discussed events for the Iowa State Fair, including the selection of the state Jersey show judge. John Maxwell, Donahue, reported on the plans for the club hosting the AJCA-NAJ Annual Meetings in 2021. President Jeff Holtz congratulated the Horst family for the recognition of Dr. Ronald Horst by the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc. with the Award for Meritorious Service. Horst passed away earlier this year, but he was recognized posthumously at the association’s annual meetings this past June.

JERSEY JOURNAL

With the internet readily available on devices ranging from the desktop computer in the barn office to the cell phone, Jersey producers are increasingly relying on this technology to manage their herds wherever they roam. On the heels of the recently released Jersey Journal website (usjerseyjournal. com), staff members wanted to know other places Jersey breeders turn for information online. The Journal conducted an informal survey asking readers to identify their go-to sites for dairy information. In this month’s Jersey Jargon column, we will share the top responses. Jersey breeders named official sites, as well as email newsletters, social media and other outlets as sources on which they depend to manage the herd every day. Business Sites The following sources were mentioned most frequently as those used to help manage specific aspects of their businesses, like finances or genetics. The sites are listed in alphabetical order. • Dairy Wellness (dairywellness.com): herd health and reproduction reference from Zoetis. • Global Dairy Trade (globaldairytrade. com): reference site for worldwide dairy ingredient prices. • infoJersey (infojersey.com): online service of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) for registering animals and ordering other products. • MilkPay (milkpay.com): mobile app; simulator for income data, milk per cow per day, economic impact and more based on herd data and Federal Milk Marketing Order statistics. • MilkPoint (milkpoint.com.br): international dairy news portal, based in Brazil. • PocketDairy: mobile app; herd management program for use with PCDART. • National Weather Service (weather. gov and graphical.weather.gov): websites operated by the National Oceanic and atmospheric Administration for predicting weather. Jersey producers also heavily rely on websites maintained by state extension services, equipment providers, A.I. organizations and milk marketing cooperatives to operate their dairy farms. NOVEMBER 2019

sey.com/Home.aspx): official Jersey Genetic Summary, includes lists for marketed bulls, genomic bulls and the breed’s top cows and heifers for Jersey Performance Index. • BullsEye (https://infojersey.usjersey. com/publictools/bullseye/bullseye1. aspx): sire selection tool to sort Registered Jersey bulls in real time based on your criteria. • Jersey Directory (http://www.jerseydirectory.com): listing of Jersey breeders by state and industry suppliers by area of expertise. • JerseySites (http://jerseyjournal.usjersey.com/JerseySites.aspx): listing of Jersey breeders with websites hosted by the AJCA. • Jersey Auction Live (http://www.jerseyauctionlive.com): view sales and place bids in real time with this service managed by Jersey Marketing Service. Top Overall Sites The following were mentioned most frequently as a source of general dairy and social information from the bovine world. • The Bullvine (thebullvine.com): online dairy community. • Cowsmo (cowsmo.com): official site for Cowmopolitan magazine. • Dairy Agenda Today (dairyagendatoday.com): news portal. • Dairy Herd (dairyherd.com): official site of Dairy Herd Management magazine. • Dairy Star (dairystar.com): official site of Dairy Star newspaper. • Facebook (facebook.com): online social media. • Hoard’s Dairyman (hoards.com): official site of Hoard’s Dairyman magazine; Hoard’s Dairy Intel, the publication’s weekly email newsletter, was also frequently mentioned as a source of information. • Progressive Dairy (progressivedairy. com): official site of Progressive Dairy magazine.
