Welcome to Summer I.D.E.A.S.

Dear Summer I.D.E.A.S. Families,

For the past 30 years, families in the greater Milwaukee area have chosen Summer I.D.E.A.S. as their one-stop shop for enrichment, academic, and athletic opportunities. At Summer I.D.E.A.S., campers have the chance to cultivate new skills, forge friendships, and explore diverse interests, all while enjoying the flexibility to create a personalized schedule that caters to the unique needs of each camper. Through the care and supervision provided by our outstanding faculty and staff, families return year after year to participate in Milwaukee’s premier summer program. I am excited to present to you our 2024 Summer I.D.E.A.S. offerings! This year, our booklet has undergone a transformation. What's New at Summer I.D.E.A.S.

In addition to all the great things you already know about Summer I.D.E.A.S., we have made some exciting changes to this year’s program that you (and your kids) will love! Please note that our camps have new names to indicate the age levels of campers. Wildcat Discovery Camp is for prekindergarten (ages 3 and 4) and junior kindergarten (ages 4 and 5) campers. Wildcat Adventure Camps is for campers entering kindergarten (age 5) through 4th grade. Wildcat Odyssey Camp is for campers entering 5th through 8th grade.

LUNCH AND SNACKS INCLUDED!

For all full-day campers, a healthy and delicious lunch is now included at no additional cost with your camp registration! During registration, families can opt in for lunch and provide any allergy or dietary restriction information. Snacks will also be provided to full-day and half-day campers. (Families can choose to send their child with a packed lunch in a cooler bag or lunch box, and/or snacks, but note that USM is a nut-free facility. Lunches and snacks brought from home should not contain any nut products; be sure to check labels carefully.)

CAMP OPEN EVERY WEEKDAY!

In order to accommodate families’ schedule needs, we will now offer programming on all weekdays during Summer I.D.E.A.S., including the two federal holidays, Juneteenth (Wednesday, June 19) and Independence Day (Thursday, July 4), with special activities planned for campers on those two days. (As with other camp weeks, there will be no prorated adjustments for absences on the federal holidays.)

Families still have the option to choose individual weeks of camp for their child, but we are excited to now also offer families the opportunity to bundle weeks and save! Discounted pricing will be available when registering for all nine weeks of camp, and discounts will also be available for select six-week and three-week groups of camp weeks:

RIDE THE BUS TO CAMP!

This year, Summer I.D.E.A.S. will have morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off locations in central locations in Grafton, Mequon/Thiensville, Shorewood, and downtown Milwaukee. Families can choose round-trip or one-way bus service for their child. We own and operate our own bus fleet, with buses driven by dedicated and experienced USM employees whose primary focus is the safety of the students they serve.

Summer I.D.E.A.S.

REGISTRATION

Registration can be completed online by creating or accessing an account for CampBrain using the online registration system link found at www.usm.org/summer. We suggest you access the CampBrain system using a desktop or tablet for easier registration. Early registration is recommended to ensure a spot in your desired programs. Waitlists are available for each program and families will be notified as space becomes available.

TRANSPORTATION

CAMP HOURS

Summer I.D.E.A.S. camps run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every weekday during the nine-week program, with camps divided into morning and afternoon sessions. Extended Time Care (E.T.C.) is also offered every morning from 8 to 9 a.m. and every afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at an additional cost.

ATTENDANCE

Report any student absences to the Summer I.D.E.A.S. office at 414.540.3350 or ideas@usm.org.

ILLNESS

Summer I.D.E.A.S. has a nursing staff available during the regular summer program hours. If a camper is ill or requires medical attention, a parent/caregiver may be required to pick up the child from the program. There will be no refunds for any absences due to illness.

BEHAVIOR

Appropriate camper behavior is expected while participating in on- and off-campus programs. If a camper’s behavior makes it difficult for others to learn and enjoy their experiences or for teachers to teach, a member of the Summer I.D.E.A.S. leadership team will discuss the situation with the parent/caregiver. If the problematic behavior continues, the camper may be required to withdraw from the program without a refund.

FEES AND PAYMENT PLANS

A non-refundable deposit of $50 per week, per camper is due at registration. Early-bird registration pricing is available until Friday, March 1 using the discount code provided through the website and external communications. Registration on or after Monday, June 10 must be paid in full at the time of registration. There are no fees to change or cancel a program selection through Sunday, March 31. After that date there will be a $10 change fee per activity. Tuition must be paid in full at least one week prior to the start of each week’s camp to attend camp. The last day for cancellation refunds is Monday, June 10.

Summer I.D.E.A.S. accepts ACH (electronic check), VISA, Mastercard, and American Express for deposits and payments. All credit card payments will incur a 3% surcharge; ACH payments and debit cards do not incur a surcharge.

Wildcat Discovery Camp

Prekindergarten (ages 3 and 4) and Junior Kindergarten (ages 4 and 5)

Summer days for prekindergarten and junior kindergarten students in Wildcat Discovery Camp are spent with a lead teacher and support staff, as well as smiling friends, in a comfortable and safe classroom setting. The schedule of the morning program reflects a typical academic morning during the school year, with emphasis on utilizing USM’s outdoor classroom. Activities vary from week to week, but the schedule is consistent and structured. Full-day campers have lunch in their classroom followed by rest time and additional enrichment opportunities in the afternoon.

Potty Training

Children coming to Summer I.D.E.A.S. must be 3 years old by Sept. 1 of the coming school year. They must also be toilet-trained. We consider children to be toilet-trained when they no longer wear training pants/pull-ups while awake or asleep (with the exception of medical conditions), use the toilet regularly, and inform caregivers of the need to use the toilet as necessary. We do understand accidents happen, and our staff will assist campers with clean-up and changing.

Behavior

If a camper’s behavior makes it difficult for others to learn and enjoy their experiences or for teachers to teach, the Director of Auxiliary Programs reserves the right to discuss the situation with the camper and parent or guardian. 6-week Extended Session 2

July 8-Aug. 16

The afternoon in Wildcat Adventure Camp focuses on building a community where campers are known, engaged, and safe. Summer staff work together to plan a series of fun and educational activities for the week. In addition to an on-campus schedule, campers will travel to exciting, but sometimes lesser-known, destinations around the Milwaukee area via USM's own buses. Through Wildcat Adventure Camp, we strive for campers to develop a sense of independence, create new friendships, and spark inner curiosity.

Wildcat Adventure Camp provides children in kindergarten through 4th grade with an enriching and nurturing environment where campers have fun while reinforcing the skills learned during the school year. In the morning, the 1st through 4th graders will participate in two 70-minute activities or one 140-minute activity per week to explore areas of interest or review core academic subjects. Kindergarten campers will engage with their classroom teachers for a morning of crafts, exploration, and outdoor play! Full-day campers enjoy lunch with their friends before starting afternoon activities.

Embarking on the gardening journey, campers will be part of this educational and environmentally conscious venture, cultivating the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance the flourishing beauty of USM's gardens.

Artist Workshop: Watercolor Creation: Campers will explore various techniques of the beauty and versatility of watercolor painting, helping them discover the magic of blending colors, creating stunning washes, and bringing their artistic visions to life on paper.

Little Scientists: Messy Science: Campers will make the messiest science experiments in this hands-on camp. From colorful chemical reactions to fizzy concoctions and explosive reactions, every activity is designed to captivate young minds while fostering a love for scientific exploration.

Golf: Campers will travel to par 3 courses around Milwaukee and play nine holes a day, improving their short game, gaining an appreciation for the game, increasing confidence, and having fun! Registration includes greens fees and transportation. Participants must provide their own clubs, and overnight golf club storage is available.

All Stars: Dinger Derby: This engaging program is designed to introduce young athletes to the fundamentals of baseball and softball in a fun and supportive environment. Campers will enjoy a week filled with swings, slides, and smiles as they embark on a baseball journey that combines skill development with the sheer joy of the game.

Artist Workshop: Art Through Time: Campers will immerse themselves in a hands-on exploration of various art forms, including sculpture, painting, and drawing, all inspired by captivating historical periods.

Nature Explorers: Wilderness Wanderer:

Embarking on a journey that spans the entirety of the landscape, campers will traverse the expansive 125 acres of USM's diverse terrain, encompassing woodlands, gardens, and sprawling grasslands.

Rising Stars: Theatre Fundamentals: Campers will join USM's Middle School Theatre Director Katie Gonring as she and the Rising Stars set out to explore the world of theatre using the magic of drama, music, and dance. Young actors will work together to create their own characters and stories while further developing their beginning acting skills. The class will culminate in a 20-minute showcase at week's end.

Makerspace: Character Design: Create a poseable action figure through diverse techniques such as sketching and crafting, 3D modeling and printing, laser cutting and engraving, and CNC machining. Campers will utilize the design process to turn concepts into prototypes and refine them into poseable figures. They will apply mathematical and engineering principles for precision, involving shape analysis, ratio calculation, measurement, scaling, and computer modeling.

Little Chefs: Picnic Time: Campers will move beyond PBJ and chips, joining Chef Bill to prepare simple and delicious, outdoor appropriate food for their next family picnic.

Rising Stars: Behind the Scenes: Campers will get a peak at behind the curtain and lean what it takes to bring a stage show to life, learning about set design, props, lighting, and more!

Artist Workshop: Painting Without a Brush: Campers will explore the many different tools they can use to paint without a paintbrush, including the original painting tool: their fingers!

All Stars: Basketball: Campers will boost their skills, develop teamwork, and delight in the wonders of the court, diving into confidence-boosting drills and games designed to foster a love for the game—whether on the path to becoming a basketball star or taking their first steps onto the court.

My First Craft Fair: Campers will learn about craft fairs and the ingenuity and creativity of the small business entrepreneur. Aspiring young business minds will wrap up the class by crafting handmade items to "sell" to fellow "vendors" at their very own craft fair!

All Stars: Gym Games: Campers will keep their young minds and bodies active, engaged, and smiling in this fun and fit camp filled with exciting relay races that boost teamwork and creative obstacle courses that challenge agility.

Rising Stars: Theatre Games: Campers will prepare their theatrical abilities by immersing themselves in a series of dynamic and entertaining theatre games. These carefully curated activities are designed not only to warm up their performance skills but also to foster creativity, teamwork, and spontaneity on the stage.

Builders Design: If You Build It, It Will Fly!: Campers will figure out the tricks and trades to create the best

flying object one can make while exploring and revamping their paper airplane design

Computer Explorers: Bricks, Bricks, and More Bricks: If you are a LEGO fan this is the class for you! Working with over 1,000,000+ misc. LEGO bricks along with various instructional LEGO Datca kits, this class will allow you to become a Master LEGO Builder. Equipment will be rotated to ensure a new challenge each session. Free style and instructional build will allow each student to explore new engineering concepts at their ability level. Rev up your imagination and let the building begin!

Builders Design: Lego Mania: LEGO Mania will satisfy that need to build the biggest, coolest, most complicated project that you could ever imagine. Instructional and free build projects will be offered daily to ensure that every student is challenged and meets their own personal building goals.

Campers will figure out the tricks and trades to create the best flying object one can make while exploring and revamping their paper airplane designs.

All Stars: Field Games: Campers will join friends for some fun in the sun, playing classic games like kickball while also learning new games like three-headed monster and team obstacle course.

Little Chefs: Breakfast Bites: Campers will learn how to make a variety of breakfast foods such as omelets, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy, mastering preparation and cooking techniques that will help with any breakfast dish they prepare.

Artist Workshop: Outdoor Sculpture: Young artists will explore the beauty of sculpting with a unique hands-on experience in an open-air setting. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, campers will unleash their imagination and bring their artistic visions to life.

Young Performers Workshop: Campers will spark their creativity with this class from USM’s theatre department, learning basic acting skills and improvisation techniques by playing various acting games and performing together in groups to create new characters and stories.

Kindergarten campers will engage with their classroom teachers for a morning of crafts, exploration, and outdoor play. In the afternoon, they'll join Adventure Afternoon, enjoying time with camp counselors while participating in enjoyable and educational activities, and exploring Milwaukee through our two weekly field trips.

Adventure Afternoon

Adventure Afternoon focuses on building community through group activities—such as archery, tennis, outdoor exploration, and community-building games—where campers can explore new activities and create new friendships. Tuesday and Thursday field trips will include visits to local parks, beaches, and educational institutions to explore and learn about Milwaukee.

All Stars: Games Around the World: Campers will gear up to explore the globe through fun, festive games, including cricket, rugby, bocce ball, and more.

Little Scientists: Messy Science: Campers will make the messiest science experiments in this hands-on camp. From colorful chemical reactions to fizzy concoctions and explosive reactions, every activity is designed to captivate young minds while fostering a love for scientific exploration.

Rising Stars: Ukulele: Campers will learn the basics of notes and chords to create beautiful music on this small instrument. We'll provide the ukuleles!

Ancient Myths, Legends, and Heroes: Campers will immerse themselves in history with this captivating new class, blending imagination, exploration, and the enchantment of ancient stories! As the week unfolds, campers will unleash their creativity by crafting their own myths, adding a unique and imaginative touch to their learning experience.

Builders Design: Mini Golf: Campers will design their own mini golf holes and play each other while learning the most important aspects of golf.

Artist Workshop: Watercolor Creation: Campers will explore various techniques of the beauty and versatility of watercolor painting, helping them discover the magic of blending colors, creating stunning washes, and bringing their artistic visions to life on paper.

Rising Stars: Theatre Fundamentals: Campers will join USM's Middle School Theatre Director Katie Gonring as she and the Rising Stars set out to explore the world of theatre using the magic of drama, music, and dance. Young actors will

work together to create their own characters and stories while further developing their beginning acting skills. The class will culminate in a 20-minute showcase at week's end.

Stem and Sailing: Partnering with the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, you will study the science of sailing on the Great Lakes. This innovative program will excite and engage as you explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics using sailing as a real-life, hands-on learning experience. This extended day program offers time on the water in the Discovery World Lagoon. Swim tests, medical forms, and parent/guardian permission are required for this class.

All Stars: Tae Kwon Do: Campers will focuses on character development, physical fitness, and self-defense—

with the primary goal of building discipline, self-confidence, and self-esteem.

Artist Workshop: Earthy Creations: Venture through USM’s campus with this camp which combines the love of nature and art. Campers will collect artifacts to create a masterpiece of their own.

Golf: Campers will travel to par 3 courses around Milwaukee and play nine holes a day, improving their short game, gaining an appreciation for the game, increasing confidence, and having fun! Registration includes greens fees and transportation. Participants must provide their own clubs, and overnight golf club storage is available.

Wildcat Odyssey Camp provides middle school-age students from across Milwaukee with an incredible opportunity to engage in three-hour workshops that empower them to make choices based on their interests and preferences. Whether it's delving into the world of 3D printing, mastering culinary skills in the kitchen, or exploring a diverse array of art classes, campers are guaranteed to experience a wide range of engaging activities. The sky's the limit!

Materials needed for Wildcat Odyssey Camp

It is up to each camper what to bring. Keep daily schedules in mind as you plan for weather, environment, and safety. We recommend:

• Water bottle

• Sweatshirt (some rooms may be chilly)

• Full-day campers only (if you did not opt-in for lunch): A packed lunch in a cooler bag/ lunch box

• Snacks are provided during the camp day (9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); additional snacks are recommended if your camper is signed up for morning and/or afternoon E.T.C.

If specific materials are required for a camp, such as electronic devices or sports equipment, we will share that information at least a week before the camp.

Fishing: Watch out fish, here come the Summer I.D.E.A.S. anglers! Campers will learn about the species in the area, how to tie their line, and bait and remove the fish. Campers will need their own fishing rod and small tackle box for this class.

Art Through Time: Through hands-on projects and immersive activities, campers will discover the power of artistic evolution, unlocking their own potential as budding artists. Join us for a vibrant blend of history, culture, and selfexpression, where every brush stroke tells a story.

Flag Games: Get ready for this new flag-based sports camp! From classic captures to exciting twists, our Flag Games promise endless fun and friendly competition. Campers will participate in a variety of games such as ultimate frisbee and flag football.

Sweet Treats: Campers will prepare an array of treats, including cookies, brownies, cakes, and cupcakes, gaining expertise in baking techniques and exploring the art of decorating!

Music Production: Campers will explore what it takes to produce a song from start to finish, learning how to use samples and layer their tracks to make their very own hit.

Basketball: Campers will develop their shooting, ballhandling, and finishing moves through competitive drills, working hard, competing, and improving their game!

Star Wars 101: Calling all young Jedi! This fan-favorite camp is back and is better than ever. Campers will awaken the Force within and embark on a cosmic journey filled with friendship, creativity, and intergalactic excitement.

Crafting with Cross Stitch: Campers will ignite their creativity and work to master the essentials of cross stitch and needlepoint, from understanding materials to exploring color, pattern, and texture. Throughout the week, young artists will craft unique pieces using a blend of patterns, reference materials, and their imaginations, ensuring a vibrant and personalized journey into the art of cross stitch.

Robotics: Campers will learn the basic skills of robot design, construction, and programming, designing and programming their robot to complete basic robotic challenges in a quick and efficient manner to win various robot competitions.

Chopped, Jr.: Campers will put on their aprons and get cooking! Using a wide variety of ingredients and the guidance of our in-house chef, campers will create masterpieces yummy enough to satisfy their taste buds. Friendly competitions will take place each day as they strive to be the top chef in the class!

Dinger Derby: This engaging program is designed to introduce young athletes to the fundamentals of baseball, softball, and wiffle ball in a fun and supportive environment. Campers will enjoy a summer filled with swings, slides, and

Ceramics: Grab some clay and get crafting! Campers will learn multiple techniques to bring their creations to life, and even take them home.

Flavors of the South: Aspiring chefs will discover the art of barbecue mastery, explore the secrets of crafting iconic comfort foods, and savor the diverse flavors that define the South.

Road Biking: Campers will learn the basics of bike maintenance and road safety while traveling to destinations near USM. They must know how to ride a bike and must wear a helmet, and are encouraged to bring their own bike, but some will be available to borrow.

Robotics: Campers will learn the basic skills of robot design, construction, and programming, designing and programming their very own robot to complete basic robotic challenges in a quick and efficient manner to win various robot competitions.

Debatable: Campers will argue to pros and cons of issues that interest them, practicing critical thinking, logic, and public speaking skills to defend their position while remaining relaxed and composed.

Rocket Building: Campers who dream of rocketing to the moon will enjoy this fan-favorite rocket class, where they will design, build, and launch their very own rocket.

Stop Motion Animation: Campers will squash and stretch their own clay figures to make their own stop motion animation short, learning the basics of animation, shooting a film, and bringing their characters to life!

Character Design in Makerspace: Campers will create a poseable action figure through diverse techniques such as sketching and crafting, 3D modeling and printing, laser cutting and engraving, and CNC machining. Campers will utilize the design process to turn concepts into prototypes and refine them into poseable figures. They will apply mathematical and engineering principles for precision, involving shape analysis, ratio calculation, measurement, scaling, and computer modeling.

Sailing for Youth (Novice): Join MCSC’s Youth Sailing Program and sail on Lake Michigan. Even if you’ve never sailed before‚ you can learn. Our youth program incorporates a hands-on approach to the basics of sailing and water safety. Students learn boat handling‚ sail theory‚ rules of the road and they learn and practice crew overboardmaneuvering skills along with capsize recovery skills. Students are required to have passed a 75-yard swim check in order to participate‚ and permission and medical forms are also required.
