FROM THE RECTOR/PRESIDENT VERY REVEREND ROBERT BARRON
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Dear Friends in Christ,
During my sixteen years as Archbishop of Chicago, one of my great privileges has been to work with the faculty and staff at Mundelein Seminary. Mundelein’s professors think with “the mind of the Church” and strive to form holy priests with a strong vision of and commitment to the good of the Universal Church. The University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary plays a vital role in the formation of our men to become priests who will serve the Church and God’s people with love and dedication.
Thank you for your support of Mundelein Seminary in the past year. As I begin my work as rector/president, I think of an illustrious predecessor who served as Mundelein’s rector from 1936 to 1945, Msgr. Reynold Hillenbrand. Hillenbrand’s passion was to explore the connection between liturgy and social justice, and he communicated that enthusiasm to a whole generation of Chicago priests. When I was a deacon and a young priest, I had the privilege of meeting some of these “Hillenbrand men,” including Father Lawrence Kelly, Father Joseph Kinane, Msgr. Jack Egan and Msgr. Bill Quinn. To a person, they were still on fire with the ideals that their rector had placed in them decades before.
Since accepting his assignment as Rector on July 1, 2012, Father Robert Barron has brought his trademark energy and enthusiasm for sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others to the job. His years as parish priest, professor of theology, author and television and radio personality have prepared him well for the task that lies before him; transforming Mundelein into a school of the New Evangelization, one where the way in which we transmit the Gospel message is as important as the message of the Gospel itself. As we all noted during the wonderful media coverage of the election of our new Holy Father, Pope Francis, the world is hungry for the truth imparted by the Catholic Church; we need to train our priests to share that truth with others, while never compromising it. This annual report of Mundelein Seminary provides a broad overview of the generosity of so many people supporting this most important mission of the Church. Thank you for your financial gifts, without which we could not continue, as well as for your prayers for our seminarians. They gratefully remember our benefactors at daily Mass and in their daily prayers and devotions. You and those you love are also in my own prayers; please keep me and the needs of the Archdiocese of Chicago in yours.
The call of the last two popes has been for a “New Evangelization,” a proposal of the age-old faith in Jesus Christ risen from the dead to an increasingly secularized culture. Blessed John Paul II said that this outreach must be marked by new ardor, new expressions and new methods. I want to make Mundelein Seminary a powerhouse for the New Evangelization, a place where missionaries to a secular age are formed. As Hillenbrand set his students on fire for liturgy and social justice, I want to set our current seminarians on fire for this indispensable work. We have a great faculty, a stunningly beautiful campus, a splendid tradition, terrific students and generous partners like you who pray for our seminarians and financially support our mission. I am fiercely proud of this place. Please pray for me as I begin my work as rector and president of my alma mater, and know that I will keep you daily in my prayers as I thank God for your generous hearts. Gratefully yours in Christ,
Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago 2

Reverend Ron Hicks Master of Divinity, Class of ’94 Doctor of Ministry, Class of ’03 Father Ron Hicks (M.Div. ’94, D.Min. ’03) is a great example of the giving spirit of our alumni priests. As Dean of Formation at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary, he helps form and prepare seminarians for the priesthood in their final years of study before ordination. He is also passionately dedicated to a mission which cares for orphaned and abandoned children in Latin America. Before starting his graduate study at Mundelein Seminary, he took a year to learn Spanish in Mexico working with Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH), a home dedicated to caring for orphaned and abandoned children in nine different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and serviced by another Mundelein alumnus, Fr. Phil Cleary (’79). And he fell in love. He fell in love with the mission, the children, and the way that he
6
experienced God’s love through them. Since that first encounter, Fr. Hicks continued to stay connected with NPH on his vacations and breaks. After his ordination with the Chicago Class of 1994, he was assigned as Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Chicago for two years. He then became Associate Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Orland Hills through 1999. He was then appointed for five years as Dean of Formation for St. Joseph College Seminary, overseeing the personal and spiritual growth of the college seminarians for the Archdiocese of Chicago. In July of 2005, with permission from Francis Cardinal George, Fr. Hicks moved from Chicago and rejoined NPH as their Regional Director for a five year term at the NPH orphanage in Honduras. NPH currently cares for more than
3,600 children world wide. “It feels like a big family,” Fr. Hicks mentioned before recounting a story about the kids: “One morning, we took the kids to the beach for the day. When they returned, there was a little boy, probably eight or nine years old, who had joined the group. He was homeless and living on the beach. He met and played with some of our kids that day and when he told them that he didn’t have a family, they said that he could be a part of our NPH family.” In 2010, Fr. Hicks was named the Dean of Formation at Mundelein Seminary, overseeing the spiritual and professional mentoring, evaluation and accountability for 174 seminarians from 30 different dioceses. “I work with a great team on the faculty at Mundelein. They really help make this a special place for our seminarians.” He recently had dinner with some lay friends, all who attend the same church, and they were
talking about how much they liked their new associate pastor there. “They didn’t know that he was one of my students at Mundelein. I was filled with a sense of satisfaction and joy to hear good things about one of our newly-ordained priests.” His highlight every year is the ordination of the new priests. “It is a time when I get the chance to take a step back and be proud of these men who are committing their lives to God. There are such good men here studying for the priesthood who fill me with great hope.”

Priests from Mundelein
Convocation for the Class of 2012
25th and 50th Anniversary Masses
“In Service of One Another” Awardee
Our alumni continue to serve the Church as priests of Jesus Christ in parishes throughout the country and around the world. Over 40 men were granted graduate degrees from Mundelein Seminary in May of 2012. In Chicago last year, 14 men were ordained for the Archdiocese.
On September 23, 2011, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary and Francis Cardinal George welcomed the ordination Class of 1962 to campus for a 50th Anniversary Celebration Mass and dinner. The photo above shows how many bishops and priests are still serving our Church from that class!
On September 13, 2012, Reverend William J. Zavaski was honored at our annual Golf Outing and Dinner with the Joseph Cardinal Bernardin “In Service of One Another” Catholic Humanitarian Award.
Every year, Mundelein Seminary invites our alumni priests to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversaries on campus with a Mass, hosted by Francis Cardinal George, Fr. Barron and the seminary community. This provides an opportunity for classmates to reconnect and share stories of their 25 and 50 years in the priesthood. It also gives our seminarians the chance to interact with these experienced priests and learn from their examples.
The event saw more than 500 people, including many of Fr. Zavaski’s current and former parishioners attend the evening’s dinner celebration on the campus of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary. We congratulate Fr. Zavaski with this award and thank him for his 43 years of priestly service to the people of God!
Over the past ninety years, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary has graduated more than 3,500 priests to serve in dioceses throughout the country and around the world.

Ms. Sharon Harris At her home in Libertyville, IL with pictures of her family and at Pine Meadows Golf Course with friends. Sharon Harris loves the great outdoors. In fact, it was an outdoor fishing trip with St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville that first brought her to the Mundelein Seminary campus. The parish took a group of children to St. Mary’s lake in the center of the campus, and Sharon went along to teach the kids how to fish. “I remember how beautiful the entire place was. There’s nothing like it. And it is great to know that this is where our priests are trained and educated.” Sharon is also very proud of her Catholic faith. She is an active member of her home parish, St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville, where she has lived for over 50 years and raised her four children. She is also involved with the Lumen Cordium Society through the Archdiocese of Chicago and is a member 8

Annual Christmas Concert
2012 Evening of Tribute
When Cardinal Mundelein built our campus in the 1920s, he said that he wanted it to look like Heaven so that when the men departed here as priests, they had a vision of what Heaven was like. Since that time, this campus has only grown in majesty and beauty. Over the past decade, the Seminary has taken large steps to bring the campus into the 21st century, while maintaining the reverence of the original campus plan. Recently, this included a complete renovation of the Mall, the center of our campus leading down to the docks on the lake.
Our 39th Annual Christmas Concert was held on the first Sunday of December. Rich Daniels and the City Lights Orchestra provided a fantastic band, and were joined by the Mundelein Seminary Choir. Once again, the crowd was so numerous that we had an overflow.
At our 2012 Evening of Tribute, Mundelein Seminary presented the “As Those Who Serve” Award to Fr. Robert Barron for his work as a faculty member for the past 20 years. Also at the Evening of Tribute, Cardinal George presented the “Christo Gloria” Award to Michael and Jackie Winn for their years of dedication, service and support. More than 500 family, friends and supporters turned out for this event whose proceeds go to support the Study Pilgrimage to the Holy Land for our third-year men and other needs of the seminary.

Our Future Parish Priests Mundelein Seminary currently educates and forms 174 young men for the priesthood, making us one of the largest seminaries in the country. In the Classroom
Parish Pastoral Internships Holy Land Study Pilgrimage Service to the Poor
The graduate degree program at Mundelein seeks to build the capacity for deeper selfknowledge through the disciplined use of reason guided by the Rule of Faith. Intellectual formation seeks to help a man deepen his appropriation of the content of the Faith, understand it so as to penetrate its mysteries and prepare to share it with Christ’s faithful and the world.
Our goal is to develop the leadership qualities of all candidates for priesthood. Not only is a priest a public leader entrusted to direct and guide a parish, he also is a religious leader who represents the larger Church.
Seminarians have unceasing opportunities to deepen their love for the Lord through daily Mass, Eucharistic adoration, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, and directed retreats. Every seminarian meets twice a month with his spiritual director. Seminarians have the opportunity to attend multiple retreats each year.
2011-2012 Annual Report
In their second year at Mundelein Seminary, students are given a parish assignment and serve there with the pastor as a pastoral intern. They are given their first responsibilities within a parish and many form bonds with parishioners that last beyond their time there. It is a great opportunity for mentorship with an experienced priest and leadership development within a parish community.
Each year, a group of third year seminarians make a study pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where they deepen their relationship with the Lord, as the Sacred Scriptures come alive for them. The faculty joins them and “uproots” their third year of study to the Holy Land for an entire semester. This commitment to an entire academic quarter is unique among seminaries, and our students regularly say that it is a life-changing event. Being able to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and spend the time to make it their home, our seminarians are able to experience a deeper connection to the scriptures in preparation for the priesthood.
The seminarian will prepare for priestly life and ministry by engaging in a range of pastoral experiences. Mundelein’s program allows the seminarian to gain exposure to the variety of ministries and work that are common to diocesan priesthood. At the heart of Mundelein’s pastoral experience is a vision of service flowing from the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. These include opportunities to minister to the sick, visit the imprisoned, teach RCIA, and help the poor. Also, mission trips to Arizona or Africa are offered to seminarians. All seminarians participate in two, full-time internships: one is a parish of their home diocese and one in a hospital setting.

Thank you. In the past year, more than 25,000 people answered the call to support Mundelein Seminary with more than $4 million in total giving. Rev. Kevin McCray, Class of 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: “It is with a full heart, and a heart on fire, that I express my gratitude for your continued and generous support, both financially, and for your unceasing prayers for vocations. I have felt your prayers sustain me during these last six years of seminary formation and have strengthened me in my preparation for the priesthood.” “May we all come to recognize Christ in the breaking of the bread, and in the faces of our fellow travelers and our fellow pilgrims. May our hearts continue to be set on fire to continue the Lord's work, and may we, as the disciples did, turn back on fire to Jerusalem, so that we may work together in the mission of the Church, so that all may know the love and salvation that comes from recognizing Jesus.” ------------------------------------------------------Thomas J. Byrne Archdiocese of Chicago: “When I look at what I've been truly privileged to undertake during my years at Mundelein, all I can say is ‘Who am I to be given such gifts?’ I am in gratitude for the financial and spiritual generosity of all those who made this education possible in whatever situation I find myself.” “May God bless you abundantly for your generosity.”

Rev. Michael Warden Diocese of Green Bay, WI ! “For a little over five years before entering seminary I worked as a tradesman. I came to understand in that time the value of having the right tools for the right job. A priest also needs good tools for the same reason. I want to take this opportunity to thank both the spiritual and financial benefactors of Mundelein Seminary. I am very grateful to those who have contributed in any way to helping equip us with the tools that we need in order to be good priests today. I know as I begin the continuing ministry of Jesus Christ that I have what I need now in order to manage the things that may arise within the day-to-day life of a priest. So, I thank you with deepest gratitude for providing for our work as priests in the Church. “
Christ. May the Almighty God keep bestowing many more blessings upon you and your family. I assure you of my prayers and I humbly ask that you continue to keep me in yours as well.”

Rev. Mr. John Bosco Ssekkomo Archdiocese of Kampala – Uganda: “The journey to the Lord’s altar is never travelled alone. It is only possible with help and companionship of others. For the same reason our Lord sent out the twelve two by two and also gave them an instruction to take nothing but a walking sticks—no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” “Right now I can testify that I came in the same way from Uganda. But my four years’ spiritual and formation journey here at Mundelein Seminary has been possible because of your ---------------------------------------------- companionship. Allow me to express my Deacon Rodlin Rodrigue gratitude for the prayers and financial Archdiocese of Chicago: support you have given to me and my “When I look back, I realize that brothers at Mundelein.” my journey to the priesthood would have “As I near my ordination to the never been possible without people like priesthood of Jesus Christ and start you holding my hands along the way; I serving His people in Uganda, I promise am taking this opportunity to extend my you my consistent prayers.
