When our students carefully considered the options and ultimately chose The Music Man as their production, my heart swelled with joy. This Golden Age classic holds a cherished place in the hearts of anyone familiar with musical theatre or those who have ever been swept up in the thrill of a marching band. Whether your introduction to the show was through the Academy Awardwinning film or perhaps the recent revival with Hugh (Wolverine) Jackman, The Music Man transports us to an era far removed from today’s constant digital noise—a time when the arrival of the mail, or a simple town gathering, sparked excitement. Oh, how times have changed.
Today, it often takes a moment of hardship to remind us of life’s simplest pleasures. Remember the days following Hurricane Katrina when our community rallied together to rebuild? Or the tornado that tore through this very auditorium but that saw us rise from the rubble stronger and more united? And of course, the joy we felt when the isolation of the pandemic gave way to our first public gatherings. The Music Man invites us back to that time. While the spirited “Seventy-Six Trombones” makes us all want to join the parade, perhaps it’s the passion behind it that truly moves us—the thrill in a child’s eyes as they pick up an instrument for the first time. It’s about feeling a part of something bigger than ourselves and the joy of sharing that connection with others. Maybe the “think system” isn’t just for the kids in the band—maybe it’s a lesson for all of us.
Our cast and crew have taken that lesson to heart. With limited rehearsal time, they’ve poured their energy, creativity, and enthusiasm into every detail of this production. From painting sets to making their collegiate stage debuts, they’ve embraced River City and now offer it to you with pride. And when you realize the average age of this cast is just 21, their dedication to bringing a musical set in 1912 to life in 2024 becomes all the more impressive. Yet the themes of The Music Man remain as timely today as ever. The change-resistant, stubborn Iowans of River City exist in each of us—and the gentle reminder that something wonderful can happen if we open ourselves to a new idea or perspective feels more relevant now than ever.
So, “shipoopi” one and all! Let’s celebrate the timeless magic of community, music, and possibility.

FUN FACTS

The Music Man definitely has staying power as it has been parodied on The Simpsons and Family Guy (at least twice)
”The song “Seventy-Six Trombones,” is the same tune as “Goodnig,ht My Someone,” but in a different time signature
