As I reflect on the future of agriculture, I cannot stop thinking about the power of technology to address the problems that plague this sector. Climate change, population growth, and food security concerns have pushed for innovative technological solutions to agriculture.

In this section, we will look at what AI is, how it is used in agriculture, and the common AI applications used. AI in agriculture Personal farming work on the farm, for example, planting, maintaining and cultivating crops requires money, energy, labor, and resources. What if we could use technology to replace some human activity and guarantee efficiency? That’s where artificial intelligence comes in. For example, a team of researchers has developed AI that can detect diseases in plants. The team used a technique called transfer learning to teach AI to detect crop diseases and pest damage. They used Google’s open-source library, Tensor Flow, to build a library of AI 2,756 images of cassava leaves from plants in Tanzania. Success was able to detect disease with 98% accuracy. See other examples here AI applications in agriculture Agriculture is slowly becoming digital, and AI in agriculture is emerging in three main areas: (i) agricultural robotics, (ii) soil and crop monitoring, and (iii) predictive analytics. Farmers often use sensors and soil samples to collect data, and this data is stored in farm management systems, allowing for improved processing and analysis. The availability of this data and other relevant data will pave the way for implementing AI in agriculture. We see a number of tech companies investing in agriculture-friendly algorithms. For example, there are yield estimation algorithms based on aqua and satellite imagery by a Georgia-based startup for image recognition in the potatoes, natural language toolkit for field notes.
