Awa r d s & R e co g ni t ion 2020 Henderson Campus
greetings from the deans
I am very honored to recognize our scholarship and award recipients for the 2019-2020 academic year. You are being recognized for your contributions both in the classroom and at your clinical sites. Know that the Roseman University College of Pharmacy is proud of you for all of your accomplishment. This academic year has been particularly challenging and the fact that you are being recognized speaks volumes to your success. All of our students are award winners. You have been chosen because you have stood out amongst the standouts. Congratulations!
Larry D. Fannin, BSPharm, PharmD Dean and Professor
In this booklet you will find a list of this year’s scholarship recipients. College faculty members of the Awards and Recognition Committee choose each recipient individually each year from submitted applications based upon indicated criteria including academic accomplishment, professionalism and service to the College, their fellow students and the pharmacy community. These selections by the committee are recognition of special achievement by each recipient. The scholarships themselves are made possible through donations both large and small to the College for its scholarship fund. This support is greatly appreciated by our students and, without the generosity of these donors and sponsors, none of this would be possible. Please allow me to say thank you to the Awards and Recognition Committee members for their work in allocating the scholarships and a special thank you to each donor and sponsor of our scholarship fund for their support of our students. Finally, allow me to extend a congratulations to our recipients. I know that each of you are very deserving of recognition.
Erik C. Jorvig, Ph.D. South Jordan Campus Dean

This scholarship is awarded to CVS Health Spanish Pathway students who are proficient in Spanish and are dedicated to serving underserved Spanish speaking communities.
Alex Campos, Class of 2021 “Thank you for your generosity. I was very happy and appreciative to know that I was selected as a recipient of your scholarship. Pharmacy combines two passions of mine, providing a helping hand to individuals in need while building knowledge in the sciences. This stage in my life, approaching my last year of pharmacy school, has brought so much joy not only to myself but to my family as well. I am the first in my family to attend college and will be the first to obtain a Doctorate in Pharmacy… With your generosity, it has inspired me to continue my journey in becoming a pharmacist and help give back to others.”
James Tejeda, Class of 2021 “I chose a career in pharmacy to help give back to the Latino community. In my experiences as a technician in a Latino community, I realized the need for bilingual pharmacists, specifically Spanish-speaking pharmacists here in Las Vegas. I would spend a majority of my shifts translating for the on-duty pharmacist and it became a very fulfilling and rewarding job I wanted to pursue. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.”
Andrea Grana, Class of 2021 “Thank you for accepting me as one of the CVS Spanish Pathway program recipients. Not only has this program provided an amazing opportunity and a very generous scholarship, it has led me to find my true passion in assisting the Hispanic community. This program has also given me the resources needed to excel as a future pharmacist. Through this rewarding experience, I have been able to directly assist hundreds of Spanish-speaking patients. I cannot thank the CVS University representatives and the Roseman faculty enough. Gracias!”
Emmanuel Vergara, Class of 2021 “There is a big need for Spanish-speaking pharmacists. I had the privilege to have my IPPE sites at Spanish-majority pharmacies. It made a difference to help counsel and follow-up with patients that usually do not have a healthcare provider that speaks the same language as them. Patients sometimes do not disclose crucial information due to the language barrier. These interventions make me feel pharmacy is the right profession for me. With this passion, I hope to serve the under-represented community that I have grown up in. Thank you for helping make my dream into reality.”

This scholarship is awarded to CVS Health Spanish Pathway students who are proficient in Spanish and are dedicated to serving underserved Spanish speaking communities.
Liliana Rodriguez, Class of 2022 “I am absolutely honored to have been chosen to receive this scholarship and I am beyond ecstatic to continue this path to help the community using my skills in pharmacy. As a Spanish-speaking student pharmacist in Nevada, I’ve been given a chance to work with a diverse number of patients that teach me so much on how to be a better student and future pharmacist… This experience allowed me to see that people will be more open to learn when they see compassion and ultimately, someone that understands them. As a future pharmacist, I hope to be able to always give the best guidance to my patients when they need me the most.” Jose Garcia, Class of 2022 “I am honored to receive the CVS Health Spanish Pathway Scholarship. I am a first-generation college student and I am the first in my family to continue my education in graduate school. My parents are from Mexico and came here to find a better opportunity. I decided to become a pharmacist because I want to make a change in my community. I have noticed that Latinos and Hispanics are underrepresented in the medical field and I want to change that. I am looking forward to continuing creating a healthier community for all patients as a student pharmacist now and in the future, as a pharmacist.”
Laura De-Toro Lopez, Class of 2022 “Thank you so much for the scholarship! I truly feel grateful for the amazing opportunity to be in the Spanish Pathway to help better the Hispanic Community. I am very grateful that I can help my community because I can relate to having a language barrier. My first language was Spanish, and I learned how to speak English when I started elementary school. I chose pharmacy because I wanted to help people in a way where I can help patients improve their overall quality of life when dealing with chronic illnesses.”
Gabriela de Ortiz de Mena, Class of 2022 “I have decided to become a pharmacist due to the realization of the need for bilingual pharmacists… It is relevant that patients understand everything related to their medications so they can appropriately follow the directions from doctors and pharmacists. I want to thank you for the generous support. It makes a significant impact on my life, and it is not just for financial assistance, it is because it makes me feel that I have been noticed. I will continue putting all my effort not only to be an asset in the medical field but also to be a compassionate professional.” Saul Umana, Class of 2022 “I am very thankful and excited for this opportunity to have been chosen to receive this Scholarship from Roseman University and the CVS Health Spanish Pathway. My life has always revolved around Spanishspeaking people and having to translate for my parents as a child on how to take their medicine. I think that is where my appreciation for wanting to become a Pharmacist started. Thank you for being able to provide this great opportunity in being able to use the bilingual skills I have acquired and improved throughout my life so that I am able to use it to help others through my rotations at CVS Health and possibly after I graduate as well. I would also like to thank Dr. Helen Park for being a great mentor throughout this program and giving me an opportunity to work with CVS and prepare me for a future career with CVS Health. This scholarship has further motivated me to continue to work harder and further obtain more knowledge about the Pharmacy field.”

The Albertsons Companies scholarship recognizes outstanding pharmacy school students who demonstrate academic excellence, are employed in a community pharmacy setting, are in the final three years of pharmacy school and resides in a state where the pharmacy school is located in which Albertsons Companies operates stores. Roshni Mapara, Class of 2022 “I want to become a pharmacist so I can make a positive impact in people’s lives and in the community. I want to be able to educate patients on the medications they are taking so they can recover. I want to help long-term ill patients by alleviating their pain and explaining how and why the medications they are taking is so important, and what to expect when taking their medications. I would like to express my gratitude for this generous support and I promise that I will continue to work hard at school and as a healthcare professional.”
Nathan Heger, Class of 2022 “Thank you so much for making this scholarship possible. I was so ecstatic to see that I was chosen as a recipient. My interests have always included working in a health-related field, helping others… As I have gone through my life, the career goal of being a pharmacist has always been the option that made the most sense for me. I will try to make you, my friends, and my family proud of what I can accomplish as a healthcare professional once I graduate.”
schol arship recipients college of pharmacy Walgreens Diversity & Inclusion Excellence & Multilingual Scholarship
Since 2008, Walgreens has donated over $1 Million annually to support diversity initiatives at schools and colleges of pharmacy through our Diversity Donation program. The goal of the Walgreens Diversity Donation are to; 1) promote a diverse and inclusive institutional culture and 2) increase the enrollment of racial/ethnic sub-groups in colleges of pharmacy that are underrepresented in the U.S. pharmacy profession. Emmanuel Vergara, Class of 2021 “I am honored and grateful to be selected as one of the students to receive this scholarship. I served as president of Movimiento Estudiantil Roseman, and vice-president of the LGBTQA Student Association. As president, I helped with organizing a new fundraiser to help raise funds for our organization. We also held blood pressure and blood glucose screenings for Spanish-speaking patients at Cardenas, a Hispanic supermarket, so our community can be aware of our services and be aware of their own health. We counseled patients on eating habits as well as the surprising quantity of sugar and salt in common Hispanic beverages and food. For LGBTQA, it was fulfilling to help organize and represent Roseman in the Las Vegas 2019 Pride Parade. To me it was an honor to represent Roseman University in many events. Thank you again for helping make my dream into reality.” Dr. Rithy Khim, Class of 2020 “Thank you for your generous Walgreens Diversity and Inclusion Excellence Award. I plan to pursue a career where I can help those in need, especially in the underserved community. My goal is to become an Emergency Department pharmacist or a trauma pharmacist as well as working in a clinic to help the underserved population. I would like you to know that your generous award will aid me financially in my journey. It is philanthropists like you that makes all the difference in students’ lives, and we appreciate everything that your generosity has given us. I’ve just recently graduated so this has inspired me to keep my community service active with Roseman University and the organizations that I was in. Again, I would like to give my sincerest thank you for the generous support.” Dr. Selina Liang, Class of 2020 “My interest of becoming a pharmacist was sparked when I was little girl. Frequently, I visited local community pharmacies for over the counter recommendations ... Since my parents are immigrants, they did not know what the best medication was for me due to the language barrier. They encouraged me to ask advice from the pharmacist and that is when I had my first interaction with a pharmacist. To me a pharmacist is the best healthcare provider that I can access when I needed help. I knew I wanted to become a pharmacist that so I can provide the same service to other people that needed help. I sincerely thank you for your contribution for helping aspiring pharmacists achieve their dreams and goals.” Hyacinth Gayle Ruiz, Class of 2021 “Your warm support inspires me to keep working hard in order to achieve my dreams of becoming an excellent pharmacist. I am so grateful for your support! Since being admitted to Roseman, I have fallen even more in love with pharmacy. While I had my initial impressions about what a pharmacist’s role was in health care, I never would have imagined just how much of impact pharmacists have in patient care. I hope to one day be able to give my passionate support to both the patients and health care team in any ambulatory care setting, as well as any student driven to embark upon the path of pharmacy. I have many dreams and plans for my future in pharmacy, and with your support and generosity, I am once again incredibly inspired to pursue my goals for the future.”
schol arship recipients college of pharmacy Scott Smoot Memorial Award
The Scott Smoot Memorial Award honors an exemplary student in the College of Pharmacy who made a positive difference during their Critical Care APPE rotation to better their patient outcomes. To be considered for this award, the P3 graduating student must have exemplified (1.) strong communication and interpersonal skills, (2.) continuity of care, and (3.) perseverance.
Cecilia Fisher, Class of 2020 “Thank you and your family for recognizing me this year with The Scott Smoot Memorial Award. Pharmacy school has been an incredibly rewarding process, and it is extremely special to me to be recognized for my communication and interpersonal skills, continuity of care and perseverance. I am so grateful for wonderful role models like Dr. Oswald who inspired me to practice patient-centered care on a healthcare team and am equally grateful for individuals like you who have taken the time to recognize me for doing just that. This award serves as a reminder to me to always continue practicing exceptional communication and perseverance so I can contribute to the best outcomes for my patients.
Baoling Yu, Class of 2020 “Words cannot express how humbled and exhilarated I am to receive the Scott Smoot Memorial Award! I felt a career in pharmacy was my calling. I was especially empowered to pursue this path by the knowledge and caring interactions my mentor had with her patients at a local pharmacy. I enjoy talking with patients and I find it enriching to improve and educate patients on their health. The real world can be tough. But I will always remember why I become a pharmacist. I will continue my mission to make a positive impact in my community one patient at a time.”

My experience … reiterated to me the realities of pain management and palliative care and our responsibilities as health care professionals to go above and beyond when caring for these patients … who feel unheard, unsupported, and vulnerable. I chose Roseman because they showed me that they care about giving back to our communities and improving the health of patients first. I want to thank you for your support and generosity; your contributions are truly helping me and my classmates to reach our goals.”

Angelina Marcee, Class of 2022 “Thank you first and foremost for awarding me this scholarship. I am beyond appreciative that you believe in me and want to see me succeed in my career goal as a pharmacist. I decided to become a pharmacist because I discovered the importance of drug adherence in my own family. My goal as a future pharmacist is to be clinical pharmacist or an ambulatory care pharmacist, so that I can be involved in both the pre- and post-care for the patient … I got accepted by the Cleveland Clinic to do both my hospital and community rotations in Cleveland over the summer. Thank you again for your kind support … I want to make this organization proud so that you can see the impact your scholarship had on my success in my PharmD program”.
