Letter from the PRESIDENT
Dear Roseman University Community,
As the crisp air of winter settles in, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude as we reflect on another transformative year for Roseman University. Everyone in our university community has remained strongly committed to our mission of advancing healthcare education and wellness.
This year holds particular significance, as we celebrated Roseman's 25th Anniversary. What began as the Nevada College of Pharmacy has blossomed into a comprehensive health sciences university, offering programs in pharmacy, nursing, dental medicine, graduate studies, and now, the soon-to-launch College of Medicine. In this winter edition of SpectRUm, we are thrilled to highlight some of the remarkable milestones that have defined our silver anniversary. I encourage you to read about our 25th State of the University address, where I had the honor of reflecting on Roseman's journey and our bold vision for the future. If you missed the presentation, I invite you to watch it. There is a link included in the article.
At the heart of Roseman’s success are the exceptional individuals who make up the Roseman family. This edition includes our newest class of Hero Scholars - an inspiring group of students who embody the spirit of healthcare heroism through their academic achievements, community service, and leadership. Their stories of resilience and dedication humble me, and I know they will make an indelible impact as the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Our commitment to innovation in education includes adding new programs to advance healthcare professions. We are delighted to share details on the launch of our new Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs in Family Nurse Practice and Nurse Anesthesia. These cutting-edge offerings will empower our nursing students to elevate their practice and make a profound difference in their communities.
Furthermore, we are proud to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of Dr. Alice Chen, associate professor and pediatric dentist in the College of Dental Medicine’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program, and Dr. Sarah Franklin, a Doctor of Dental Medicine Class of 2019 alumnus. As we look ahead to the next 25 years, I am filled with profound optimism. Our commitment to innovation, our dedication to our students, and our passion for creating healthier communities will continue to drive Roseman's success. Together, we will elevate the future of healthcare, one remarkable graduate at a time.
I am honored to be on this journey with you, and I look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead.
Warm regards,
Dr. Renee Coffman President Roseman University of Health Sciences
Roseman University Celebrates 25 Years:
By Jason Roth
CELEBRATING OUR PAST. ELEVATING OUR FUTURE.
In a milestone celebration marking Roseman University's 25-year journey, President and Co-founder Dr. Renee Coffman delivered the 25th Anniversary State of the University address on October 29, 2024. Speaking to a virtual audience of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends, Dr. Coffman reflected on the institution's evolution from the Nevada College of Pharmacy to its current status as a comprehensive health sciences university.
"Twenty-five years ago, as the Nevada College of Pharmacy, the first and only pharmacy school in Nevada, we embarked on a bold, but simple mission: to produce highly competent graduates through improved pharmacy education," said Dr. Coffman. "As we grew to what is today Roseman University of Health Sciences, our mission evolved -- to advance the health and wellness of the communities we serve by educating current and future generations of health professionals, conducting research, and providing patient care."
From its humble beginnings as a single college in Henderson, Nevada, Roseman has expanded to include campuses in Henderson and Summerlin, Nevada, and South Jordan, Utah, offering programs in pharmacy, nursing, dental medicine, and
graduate studies. The university's growth is guided by four foundational pillars: transforming education, reimagining healthcare, embracing discovery, and a commitment to community.
The university's innovative Six-Point Mastery Learning Model ®, first implemented in its Doctor of Pharmacy program, has been a cornerstone of its success. "Because of the Six Point Mastery Learning Model ® created by Roseman, we found that the PharmD curriculum could be delivered in three years, rather than the more traditional four years without sacrificing quality," explained Dr. Coffman.
This successful approach has been adapted across other programs, most notably in the transformation of the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from a traditional four-year curriculum to three years. The College of Dental Medicine has also implemented a team-based clinical education model that moves beyond traditional single-practice paradigms. Through primary and secondary provider teams, DMD students treat four to six patients daily, accelerating their clinical proficiency while preparing them for modern healthcare's collaborative nature.
The transformation has enabled significant growth, with the College of Dental Medicine expanding from 100 students per cohort to 140 first-year students this academic year, with plans to reach 156 students next year. The success of this model demonstrates Roseman's commitment to innovative education approaches.
The College of Nursing has also expanded its offerings, launching two doctoral programs: the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesia – the first nurse anesthetist program in Nevada – and the Doctor of Nursing Practice—Family Nurse Practitioner program. Additionally, the college has transformed its Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum to a concept-based model, enhancing students' critical thinking skills and adaptability.
A significant milestone in Roseman's growth is the upcoming launch of the College of Medicine. Following the completion of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education site visit in August, the university anticipates a decision on preliminary accreditation in early 2025. If approved, the College of Medicine will be located at the Summerlin campus and will incorporate Roseman's innovative educational model while addressing crucial healthcare needs in the region.
Central to the College of Medicine's approach is the GENESIS program, which will embed medical students in Southern Nevada's most vulnerable households from their first year. "Through GENESIS, we're not just going to train physicians; we're developing community health leaders who will help shape the future of healthcare in
Southern Nevada," said Dr. Coffman. The program emphasizes the importance of social determinants of health, which account for 80 to 90 percent of health outcomes.
Roseman's commitment to community service extends beyond education through innovative programs and healthcare initiatives. The EMPOWERED program provides vital resources and support to pregnant and new mothers in recovery from substance use disorders, demonstrating the university's dedication to addressing critical healthcare challenges. Additionally, the university has expanded its dental clinics, with the South Jordan campus growing from 106 to 155 patient chairs, and plans to expand the Henderson clinic from seven to 40 chairs. These expansions support both student training and community access to affordable dental care.
Research excellence remains a priority for Roseman. The university's annual Research Symposium has grown from 65 presentations in 2015 to 371 research contributions in 2024. Roseman’s Bioscience Collaborative has provided the infrastructure, facilities, workforce development and collaboration opportunities to reinforce Nevada and Utah as attractive locations for bioscience companies conducting breakthrough research.
Roseman's commitment to the communities it serves is perhaps its most defining characteristic. From free dental screenings and cleanings for underserved children to Medicare assistance programs that have saved beneficiaries millions, the university's community engagement initiatives have had a profound impact.
"Our success stems from the dedication of our entire university community – our passionate faculty who lead by example, our committed students who embody service through action, and our valuable partners who amplify our reach," said Dr. Coffman. "Together, we've created a model of community engagement that transforms both the lives of those we serve and the educational experience of our students."
Looking ahead, Roseman is undertaking an ambitious expansion of its Summerlin campus. The three-phase, ten-year project is projected to generate $1.86 billion in economic impact, support 10,624 jobs, and produce $37.5 million in tax revenue for Nevada by 2032.
"Over the past 25 years, we've built a strong foundation with a track record of accomplishments that propels us forward into the next 25 years with anticipation and confidence to continue Roseman's innovation in higher education, patient care, research and discovery, and community service," Dr. Coffman concluded.
As Roseman University marks its silver anniversary, it stands poised to continue its mission of advancing healthcare education and community wellness through its commitment to innovative teaching methods, cutting-edge research, and dedicated community service. The institution's growth and achievements over the past quartercentury serve as a strong foundation for its ambitious plans to elevate the future of health sciences education and healthcare delivery in the communities it serves.

Since its inception in 2021, the Hero Scholarship has awarded an impressive $350,000 in scholarships, making a significant impact on the lives of future pharmacists, nurses, and other medical professionals.
This year's class of 12 Hero Scholars is no exception. Hailing from Roseman's Henderson, Nevada and South Jordan, Utah campuses, each Hero Scholar’s journey reflects a unique blend of dedication to community service, a passion for healthcare, and the resilience to overcome formidable obstacles.
"The Hero Scholarship is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit," says Vanessa Maniago, Vice President for Strategic Implementation and Engagement at Roseman University and creator of the Hero Scholars program. This sentiment is echoed by the program's generous donors, whose contributions not only provide crucial funding, but also demonstrate a steadfast belief in the potential of these students. "Their investment in our Hero Scholars is an investment in the future of healthcare and the communities these students will serve," Maniago adds.
Our Hero Scholars’ stories serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that can occur when a community rallies behind the dreams and aspirations of its future leaders. EXPLOSIVE GROWTH, Empathy and Evolution–
THE HALLMARKS OF THE PRACTICE OF NURSING
By Vanessa Maniago
In response to the exceptional demand for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) in the US, Roseman University’s College of Nursing, under the leadership of the Dean of the College, Dr. Brian Oxhorn, launched two Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs, Doctor of Nursing Practice—Family Nurse Practitioner (DNPFNP) and the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesia (DNPNA) in 2024. Nursing, like many healthcare professions, has over time raised the level of training and qualifications for nurses, with explosive growth, multiple pathways, increased areas of specialization, educational options and levels of licensure, offering more options than ever in the history of nursing practice.
States, and nurses were the ones who stepped in to educate families about health promotion and prevention. Across the country, it was noted that nurses were exceptionally skilled in the healthcare needs of children and families. It was at this time that nurses’ roles paralleled the roles and responsibilities of a primary care physician, and the role of the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, a registered nurse who has completed graduate-level education and training, was formalized.
Medicine and Nursing Co-Evolve Post-War
The practice of Nursing has evolved dramatically in the last 75 years and has been significantly influenced by the evolution of the practice of Medicine. World War II marked an extraordinary sea change for Medicine, as medical education advanced and physicians post-war increasingly chose medical specialties. In 1940, 24% of US Physicians were specialists, and trained by rotating “internships”. By 1960, nearly 38,000 doctors were in medical “residencies”, contributing to a shortage in primary care physicians as physicians increasingly specialized. In underserved and rural areas, primary care physicians relied on the vast expertise of registered nurses. According to the American Nursing Association (ANA), the introduction of the Social Security Amendments of 1965 increased the need for primary care throughout the United
APRN Nursing Education Formalizes
An extraordinary partnership formed that would revolutionize not only the practice of Nursing, but how nurses were trained and licensed to excel in their expanded role. In 1965, Loretta Ford, a nurse leader and Henry Silver, a physician, partnered to create the first training program at UC Colorado, which led to the establishment of the first nurse practitioner programs nationally. Throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s, nurse practitioners expanded their practice further and established themselves as a critical voice in their field through the start of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. In 2008, the ANA endorsed the APRN Consensus model to: 1) promote uniformity in the regulation of APRN’s across the US, 2) provide guidance in areas of licensure, accreditation, certification, and education, and 3) advocate for legislation that supported APRN’s like inclusion in the Affordable Care Act. Nurse practitioners are one of several different types of APRN’s.
Critical Care Nurses wishing to specialize in anesthesiology as an entry-level Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) were previously required to have a master’s degree, and by 2025, a doctoral degree (DNPNA) will be required for entry-level CRNA’s. Critical Care nurses with experience in the ICU with surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro, pediatric, neonatal or trauma patients who hold a license as a registered professional nurse and/or APRN are eligible to apply for Roseman’s DNPNA program.
Outlook for DNPFNP’s and DNPNA’s
Today, there are over 385,000 APRN’s, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for NP jobs will grow by 35% by 2026. Salaries for FNP’s average $121,993 with top earners making $167,000 per year.
The demand for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists who earn DNPNA or a Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) degrees is projected to increase by 40% by 2033, as CRNA’s evolve to become primary anesthesia providers. As our population ages, and chronic disease increases, the demand for surgery is expected to increase concurrently with the demand for CRNA’s to serve patients in the operating room. According to the BLS, mean average salary for CRNA’s in 2023 was $214,200, among the highest of any nursing specialty.
Roseman’s DNPFNP and DNPNA
Roseman’s 36-month, full-time, online Doctor of Nursing Practice— Family Nurse Practitioner program is designed for nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree who wish to achieve the highest level of nursing practice and prepare for the national call to elevate the academic preparation of nurses to the doctoral level. The DNPFNP enables graduates to practice as Family Nurse Practitioners, lead in administrative roles within healthcare systems, teach in academia, conduct and translate evidence-based research, improve safety and quality, and advocate on behalf of their patients. The program allows students to earn their MSNFNP in just under two years, and to sit for licensure, while continuing on for another year to earn their DNP. This program will welcome its inaugural class in July 2025, with applications closing in June, 2025.
–Dr. Jason Major, DNP, MSN, FNPBC, APRN, Interim Director of Family Nurse Practitioner Program
The DNP prepares graduates for multiple roles including health policy development, leadership, administration, advanced clinical practice, and information technology in an environment of interprofessional collaboration. Educating the next generation of healthcare providers is a critical step for increasing access to quality healthcare and improving healthcare outcomes.
Roseman’s 36-month, full-time, year-round hybrid-online program Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesia program is designed for aspiring nurses seeking to embark on a fulfilling journey toward becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). Developed specifically for those holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or an equivalent baccalaureate qualification, approved by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA), the program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and clinical expertise needed to excel in the dynamic field of nurse anesthesia. It is the only DNPNA program in Nevada. This program will welcome its second class of students in July 2025, with applications closing in February 2025.
–Dr. Nathaniel Apatov, PhD, MHS, MSN, CRNA, LTC USA Retired, DNPNA Program Director
“Roseman’s DNPNA students will learn how to administer anesthesia and deliver anesthesia-related services independently and as part of an interprofessional team Students will learn through realworld scenarios using state-ofthe-art simulation and training in collaboration with clinical partners in Southern Nevada Further, students will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and systems-level thinking, while learning their important role in a healthcare team ”
“We are very excited to offer the DNPFNP to nurses, as the demand for nurse practitioners is rapidly growing, with the BLS citing nurse practitioners as the third fastest growing occupation between 20222033 For students wishing to achieve the highest level of training with a DNP, our graduates will be prepared to practice, lead, advocate, educate and make a difference in the world ”
Both programs leverage Roseman’s unique teaching and learning model, the Six-Point Mastery Learning Model®, which ensures high levels of achievement for all students and fosters cooperation and collaboration in the learning process.

SPARKING Curiosity & Excitement
FOR HEALTHCARE CAREERS IN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
By: Rachael Thomas & Tom Wood
The Alpine School District’s Medical Explorers Program is an immersive initiative designed to inspire high school students to explore diverse career paths in the healthcare industry. Organized in collaboration with local medical facilities, universities, and professionals, the program provides hands-on experiences and firsthand insights into the world of healthcare and the allied health fields.
“Roseman University is proud to be part of this inspiring program, which introduces high school juniors and seniors to the vast array of healthcare career opportunities they may have never considered before,” said Dr. Jeremy Wells, Chancellor of Roseman University’s South Jordan campus.
Participants in the program engage in activities such as touring state-of-the-art healthcare facilities, observing live demonstrations, and interacting with professionals from various disciplines, including nursing, pharmacy, dental, physical therapy, radiology, and more. By connecting students with experts and cutting-edge resources, the program helps them gain a comprehensive understanding of the skills, education, and dedication required to succeed in these roles.
The program emphasizes experiential learning through unique sessions such as virtual anatomy labs, emergency medical simulations, and mock disaster drills. These activities are not only educational but also spark curiosity and excitement for healthcare careers. Students are encouraged to ask questions, reflect on their experiences, and consider how their interests align with specific career paths.
On November 13, Roseman University hosted Medical Explorers Day where students immersed themselves in the dynamic fields of pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, and graduate studies. They experienced hands-on learning by creating an exfoliant sugar scrub while discovering the role of a Compounding Pharmacist. In the Nursing Skills Lab, they explored the critical importance of sterile technique and infection management. In the Dental Sim Lab, students had the unique opportunity to perform a dental filling simulation. The day concluded with an engaging session on Roseman’s graduate studies programs, highlighting the transformative impact of research on the health and well-being of our communities.
Ultimately, the Medical Explorers Program aims to bridge the gap between education and industry, preparing students for future success while addressing the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals. Through this program, students gain invaluable exposure to real-world scenarios, helping them make informed decisions about their education and career goals. The healthcare fields continue to offer graduates strong salary potential, job security, and rewarding careers that impact communities. The program is a testament to the power of partnerships between schools, businesses, and healthcare providers in shaping the next generation of professionals.
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Roseman University Dr. Alice Chen Proudly congratulates
For being named “TOP DENTIST” by her peers in the Annual Top Dentists Rankings in Desert Companion for the 8th year in a row!
By Vanessa Maniago
Dr. Chen joined Roseman’s College of Dental Medicine in 2022. With a warm smile, kind face and gentle way, it is obvious that she has a gift for connecting with children. Born to parents who guided her toward a professional ethos, “be helpful and take care of others,” Dr. Chen has followed this guidance many times over.
After a decade in private practice, in 2021, Dr. Chen decided to focus more time on the practice of pediatric dentistry and part with the administrative and business tasks associated with running a practice. The opportunity at Roseman Dental & Orthodontics was a perfect fit. “Joining Roseman allowed me to focus more on doing what I love most—treating children. I couldn’t be happier about the opportunity to focus on children while training dentists to be caring and competent providers,” she said. In her role in an academic dental practice, Dr. Chen has the chance to shape and inspire dentists in training through Roseman’s AEGD residency program.
Dr. Chen practices at Roseman Dental & Orthodontics in Henderson and at Roseman Dental – Summerlin, Roseman’s pediatric dental clinic focused on treating medically compromised children in need of specialized dental care. Dr. Chen works alongside Dr. Matthew Thacker, Clinic Director, to treat patients of Roseman’s partner organization, Cure 4 The Kids (C4K). C4K treats children with cancers, blood diseases, and other life-threatening diseases.
These children often put their dental needs aside, in need of a dental home that can deliver what is often specialized care.
Dr. Chen is a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Chen is an advocate for HPV prevention, serving on the American Cancer’s Society’s National HPV Vaccination Roundtable’s dental task group charged with updating ACA dental action guidelines. She lectures on behalf of the Nevada Cancer Coalition, the AAPD, the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, and Roseman’s Neighborhood Health Series. She is a CCSD volunteer dentist, an evaluator for the NV State Board of Dental Examiners, serves as Board Secretary for the NV Association of Pediatric Dentistry, and is Board Treasurer for the National Charity League.
Dr. Chen received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from UCLA with an emphasis on developmental psychology, graduated cum laude from Boston University, and pursued her specialty degree in pediatric dentistry at Temple University Hospital. She is married to Dr. Matthew Raddue.
Congratulations to Dr. Chen!
Oral Pathologist and Educator:
Dr. Sarah Franklin's Journey
By Marie Schildknecht
Meet Dr Sarah Franklin, a 2019 graduate from Roseman University College of Dental Medicine’s Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program Her pursuit of advanced education has taken her across the United States, from California to New York to Kentucky
Dr. Franklin completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2020. She then pursued her Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology residency at Northwell Health in New York. Following her completion of the residency program in 2023, the American Academy of Maxillofacial Pathology presented Dr. Franklin with the William G. Shafer Award in recognition of her outstanding performance as an oral pathology resident and for receiving the highest score on their Fellowship exam. "I attribute this success to the foundation I acquired at Roseman," she remarked. "I entered residency with an understanding of how to master new material."
Now serving as an assistant professor at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, Dr. Franklin has distinguished herself as a rising star in oral and maxillofacial pathology and as an educator. As an oral and maxillofacial pathologist, she specializes in diagnosing and managing oral diseases, combining clinical, radiographic, and microscopic skills to provide comprehensive patient care. She divides her time between treating patients in her faculty practice, teaching students, and providing biopsy services for other practitioners.
Dr. Franklin finds particular fulfillment in microscopic diagnosis. "Using my specialized knowledge to perform microscopic diagnosis is my favorite and most challenging aspect of my role," she shares. "It is intellectually demanding and meets an important need in the community."
This multifaceted role allows Dr. Franklin to make a lasting impact on both patients seeking answers and students embarking on their dental careers.
"My patient population is generally afraid and/or in pain," she explains. "Being in a position to help them discover answers and implement appropriate therapy is incredibly rewarding." This commitment to patient care extends to her teaching philosophy, where she works to ease students' anxieties about challenging subject matter in general dentistry and oral pathology.
Reflecting on her time in the College of Dental Medicine, Dr. Franklin said that Roseman was her first experience with meaningful learning happening in the classroom. Prior to her dental school experience, most of her learning happened at home as she studied. At Roseman, the Six-Point Mastery Learning Model™ allowed her to maximize the value of each class session, leading to mastery of concepts that would have taken hours of individual study to accomplish. The emphasis on collaboration also completely shifted her approach to learning and working effectively.
"By far the most important lesson Roseman taught me was the value in remaining flexible and trying nontraditional methods," said Dr. Franklin. "Leveraging nontraditional methods to accomplish real- time learning is a skill I use every day, with patients, students, and in my independent studies."
In addition to expanding her learning toolkit, Dr. Franklin's experience at Roseman University helped to focus and direct her career's trajectory. "I developed a passion for education during dental school that I'm not sure I would have discovered had I attended a different university," she explained. "My goals shifted from a desire to practice general dentistry to a desire to find a career with meaningful patient interaction, intellectually challenging subject matter, and teaching opportunities. Oral Pathology has been the perfect career path for me."
To current Roseman students, Dr. Franklin offers valuable perspective, "Dental school can be challenging and stressful, and there is often a looming temptation to fixate on flaws you may identify within your academic environment. I would challenge you to focus your attention on embracing the opportunities Roseman provides."
She emphasizes the unique value of the Roseman experience. "When you leave dental school and interact with other dentists, you will likely realize that our environment at Roseman is entirely unique,” said Dr. Franklin. “If you take full advantage, I am confident you will graduate with the clinical skills, relevant knowledge, and emotional intelligence necessary to succeed in your career."
