greetings from the deans

I am very honored to recognize our scholarship and award recipients for the 2019-2020 academic year. You are being recognized for your contributions both in the classroom and at your clinical sites. Know that the Roseman University College of Pharmacy is proud of you for all of your accomplishment. This academic year has been particularly challenging and the fact that you are being recognized speaks volumes to your success. All of our students are award winners. You have been chosen because you have stood out amongst the standouts. Congratulations!

Larry D. Fannin, BSPharm, PharmD Dean and Professor

In this booklet you will find a list of this year’s scholarship recipients. College faculty members of the Awards and Recognition Committee choose each recipient individually each year from submitted applications based upon indicated criteria including academic accomplishment, professionalism and service to the College, their fellow students and the pharmacy community. These selections by the committee are recognition of special achievement by each recipient. The scholarships themselves are made possible through donations both large and small to the College for its scholarship fund. This support is greatly appreciated by our students and, without the generosity of these donors and sponsors, none of this would be possible. Please allow me to say thank you to the Awards and Recognition Committee members for their work in allocating the scholarships and a special thank you to each donor and sponsor of our scholarship fund for their support of our students. Finally, allow me to extend a congratulations to our recipients. I know that each of you are very deserving of recognition.

Erik C. Jorvig, Ph.D. South Jordan Campus Dean

This scholarship is awarded to CVS Health Spanish Pathway students who are proficient in Spanish and are dedicated to serving underserved Spanish speaking communities.

Odily Alvarado, Class of 2021 “I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for awarding me this scholarship. I will receive a PharmD and MBA degree in May 2021. These degrees will assist me in obtaining my goal of becoming a Pharmacy Manager. I have a strong passion for helping others. For that reason, I assisted in the creation and implementation of a new club at Roseman University South Jordan Campus called Moviemento Estudiantil Roseman (M.E.R). I was the Coordinator of MER and I led and planned Spanish Language Workshops and Practice Sessions. The goal of our club was to promote learning Spanish in the medical setting to help facilitate language barriers. Another goal of the club is to help underserved communities around Utah by volunteering and having health fairs.”

Savannah Flores, Class of 2022 “I am very grateful to have been awarded this scholarship to assist in my academic career … and allow me to further contribute to the community, especially to the minority community. Roseman University has been everything I thought it would be and more and has pushed me to learn quickly and effectively. Currently I am interested in applying for a residency program and looking into Oncology pharmacy. I recently was elected the President of APHA and was recently elected as Vice President of Movimiento Estudiantil Roseman (M.E.R.), a club that develops the importance of Spanish speaking health professionals in the Spanish community to build respect and confidence. I assure you that I will continue to work hard and am honored to have this chance to learn and develop as a health professional.”

The Albertsons Companies scholarship recognizes outstanding pharmacy school students who demonstrate academic excellence, are employed in a community pharmacy setting, are in the final three years of pharmacy school and resides in a state where the pharmacy school is located in which Albertsons Companies operates stores. Daisy Hoehn, Class of 2021 “I am writing this to express my gratitude for the scholarship that you have provided. Honestly, this scholarship came at a perfect time to help my family from the financial burden that have resulted from COVID-19. I have decided to become a pharmacist because growing up in the Philippines, quality health care and medicine was always hard for my family to get when needed. Being able to give back to the community through outreach and service has always been a passion of mine because I enjoy interacting with people and do what I can to advocate, educate, or even just help make a difference in their lives. Again, I would like to say thank you for the donation and express my deepest appreciation that you have chosen me to be a recipient for this scholarship. I will continue to work hard and dedicate myself to the College of Pharmacy and to help advocate and advance the pharmacy profession.”

Since 2008, Walgreens has donated over $1 Million annually to support diversity initiatives at schools and colleges of pharmacy through our Diversity Donation program. The goal of the Walgreens Diversity Donation are to; 1) promote a diverse and inclusive institutional culture and 2) increase the enrollment of racial/ethnic sub-groups in colleges of pharmacy that are underrepresented in the U.S. pharmacy profession. Bertha Castrellon, Class of 2021 “I would like to express my profound gratitude for being selected to receive the Walgreens Diversity Scholarship. I am of Mexican heritage (and) have always found it fulfilling to be able to assist the Latino community by teaching them about their health and what ways they can make healthy lifestyle changes. At Roseman I was the president of a student organization called Movimiento Estudiantil Roseman (M.E.R.) from January 2019 until May 2020. In M.E.R. the goal was to promote awareness of the importance of Spanish speaking healthcare professionals, to encourage members to venture out into Latino communities, and to provide health education to those in the Latino community. Being able to create a positive change in the Latino community and to educate aligns with why I wanted to become a pharmacist in the first place.”

Renee Holder Scholarship

This scholarship was established by colleagues, family, and friends in memory of Dr. Renee Holder, who had served as a faculty member at Roseman University. Reflective of Dr. Holder’s passions, preference for the award is given to students pursuing employment, residency, fellowship, or a clinical pharmacy affiliation in the areas of pain management, palliative care, or global health. Joshua Christensen, Class of 2021 “It is an honor to be selected as a recipient of the Dr. Renee Holder Memorial Scholarship. Thank you for helping me achieve my goals in the field of medicine. My pharmacy experience has been challenging and rewarding. During my first two years I have had the tremendous opportunity to become involved. This past year I have been in the presidency of two pharmacy clubs on campus, The American Pharmacist Association and The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. My current interests are geriatrics, oncology, and palliative care. As part of my third year of rotations I was selected to do my rotations with the Cleveland Clinic. There is so much opportunity for learning in this field and I am excited to make a difference in it. I know that my progression in this field of study would not be possible without inspiring teachers, researchers, and supportive community members like you.”

Stapley Pharmacy was the recipient of the 2019 Most Valued Pharmacy Award by the Independent Pharmacy Cooperative (IPC). The owner of Stapley Pharmacy, Jana Stapley, chose Roseman University’s College of Pharmacy to receive the awards to support pharmacy student scholarships. Kasey Heusdens, Class of 2021 “Thank you for your generosity in donating scholarships to Roseman University, and I am extremely honored to have been chosen as the recipient for one. Since setting out at breakneck speed on this path to becoming a pharmacist I have learned so much more than I imagined was possible. It was definitely a challenge to absorb all the information in any two-week block, but it led to some great character building and also taught me how to be a better learner. Roseman University’s great integration of longitudinal rotations and summer rotations also helped to solidify what we learned in class. It was rewarding to be out on rotations, both institutional and community, and realize that I had learned something that was beneficial to my patients; I had gained the power to help better someone’s life with the knowledge I got from pharmacy school. I am very excited to take this new-found knowledge and power with me into the field of pharmacy upon graduation.”

Amanda Nielson, Class of 2022 “I applied for this scholarship because it would be so helpful in all the expenses I have. Just like most pharmacy students that are in school full time it is hard for me to work enough to pay for my tuition and all my personal expenses. This will allow me to feel less stressed and work extra hard in school. Getting a scholarship can seem like a small gesture but to me it has significantly blessed and changed my life. It not only helps me with my financial needs, but it helps me recognize that I am special and have a great future ahead. I’m excited to become a pharmacist and help people every day with their healthcare needs. I hope to one day be successful and be able to give back in a community pharmacy setting. Thank you for your generosity.”

Mikayla Rosqvist, Class of 2022 “I am honored to be one of the recipients of the College of Pharmacy Scholarships. In the 2nd grade we had career day at school and my friend’s mom talked about how she was a pharmacist. I thought it was such a cool job, that she got to help patients with their medicine and talk to nurses and doctors. I told my mom I wanted to be a pharmacist and I never changed my mind. I know I made the right choice academically choosing Roseman. Over the past school year I have passed all of my courses without having to reassess, and I attribute my success to a couple of key things. The first being the amazing professors I have had at Roseman. I’ve never had professors care so much about my academic wellbeing than I have during my time at Roseman. The other key has been the friends I study with every day. I am truly thankful for the relationships I have made the past year. To be able to have the support I have and on top of that be able to receive this scholarship means the world. Thank you for believing in me and my pursuit to become the best pharmacist I can be.”
