ROADMAP Transforming Education. Reimagining Healthcare. Embracing Discovery. Committed to Community.

y Histor

It started with a need. In 1999, a shortage of Pharmacists in Nevada was occurring at the very same time that a groundswell of demand for pharmacy education was growing. So, our three founders, each coming from healthcare, contributed $5,000 to start what is now Roseman University of Health Sciences. With this need came a desire to educate and train differently. To consider the varying learning styles young adults have. To develop content mastery and excellence. And so, the Roseman Six-Point Mastery Learning Model® was born. And graduates went on to exceed standards. To get excellent jobs. To see a return on their investment. To become compassionate and skilled caregivers. Now, with our 20th Anniversary behind us, we look back on two decades of applying this foundation to a broad universe of healthcare education, developing innovative programs that train a diverse student body to be exceptional leaders in their chosen fields. We look ahead to the limitless promise of the future, in providing our communities unparalleled patient care, scientific discovery and commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in our region and beyond. This is the Roseman Story of Success.

WHAT MAKES ROSEMAN DIFFERENT? Our founders approached learning in a different way. They recognized that every student has a different learning style and that adult learners may need to be engaged differently. They also believed that every student can succeed and compete at a very high level if given the right tools and training to do so. Breaking down barriers and increasing communication and partnership between student and teacher are at the core of success, proficiency and content mastery. Student-to-student collaboration develops healthcare professionals that work in teams so that the patient has the very best chance of a good outcome.

The core principles behind this difference are:

An educational system in which all students can realistically attain high levels of achievement. We do not place emphasis on grades, rather on achievement of curricular outcomes.

7

A system of assessment designed to “detect and correct” problems, thus ensuring achievement of high expectations by all students. We are committed to an assessment system that encourages and gauges progress toward the accomplishment of high academic standards by all students.

An educational experience that goes beyond memorization of facts. We believe in the concept of deep learning and mastery of content that leads to understanding and the ability to apply knowledge and make wise decisions.

An educational system that makes better use of time. We utilize the “block system” of curricular design, which provides students with the opportunity to study one content area intensely and master it without distractions from other subjects.

A curriculum that utilizes and is supported by technology. We believe that technology holds a remarkable potential to stimulate thinking and learning, as well as being an effective tool for acquiring, evaluating and utilizing new knowledge.

An educational experience that values and responds to the needs of students and encourages teamwork and communication. Our curriculum places a premium on active learning in a noncompetitive, collaborative environment.

A curricular design that stresses the importance of early exposure to the profession. We believe in building basic skills early by exposing students to early practice experiences.

ROSEMAN UNIVERSITY SIX-POINT MASTERY LEARNING MODEL?

CLASSROOM AS TEACHER

BLOCK CURRICULUM

Classroom design and layout assures that every student is in close proximity to the instructor, to facilitate learning and encourage student participation.

Students focus on one academic subject at a time, and must demonstrate competency at 90% or higher to pass.

EARLY EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Early exposure to clinical experiences enhances and supports learning in the classroom by providing students the opportunity to see, feel and understand what is taught in the classroom in an actual healthcare setting.

ACTIVE & COLLABORATIVE LEARNING Roseman University strives to produce competent graduates in an educational environment that ensures high levels of achievement from all students and fosters cooperation and collaboration in the learning process. This is the concept of mastery learning.

Class time incorporates a variety of activities to encourage participation and foster student interest, including discussions, case presentations, simulations, debates, group projects, role-playing, seminars, workshops and more.

ASSESSMENT LEARNING

COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION

Learning, assessment, feedback and re-assessment are ongoing and continuous, allowing students to gauge their learning and detect areas of misunderstanding early.

Students are measured on criterion-referenced test achievement, not against the performance of others.

Student Perspectives of the Roseman Six-Point Mastery Learning Model®

CLASSROOM AS TEACHER “I appreciate the layout of the classroom set-up and feel that I can personally benefit from being in the presence of each professor.” – Savannah Flores, PharmD Class of 2022 Savannah Flores BLOCK CURRICULUM “I’ve loved being able to master and focus on one subject at a time.” – Joshua Knapton, DMD Class of 2022

Joshua Knapton

“I believe the Block Curriculum is a successful asset to Roseman’s unique education. I am able to put all my focus into one block at a time to master it, then I get to apply the previously learned knowledge to the next block.” – Krystal McCraw, ABSN Class of 2021

“The Block Curriculum allows me, as a student, to completely master a subject before moving on. I find it a lot more difficult to juggle multiple subjects or concepts at once. Focusing on that one subject and achieving a high score in assessment will give me confidence in the knowledge that I have and will apply in my future career.” – – Anonymous, PharmD Class of 2023 ACTIVE & COLLABORATIVE LEARNING “Active and Collaborative Learning is my favorite because so much can be learned from my colleagues taking the same class! Everyone learns differently, and it helps me to be able to fill in the spaces of my learning by talking to fellow colleagues! This learning style has helped me to grow more as a person and to become my best self! I’ve learned so much about those around me and how much of an impact other people can have on your life!” – Ashley Hinkle, DMD Class of 2023 Ashley Hinkle

COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION “I like not competing with my colleagues. Since everyone has their own strengths, I think it has made my class closer because we are able to help each other without the stress.” Ella Cruz, DMD Class of 2023

ASSESSMENT LEARNING “Assessment Learning encourages true learning and provides students feedback and an opportunity to improve.” – Will Sutherland, DMD Class of 2024 EARLY EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Will Sutherland “Early Experiential Learning is essentially learning in motion. It brings many textbook concepts to life.” – Jeremy Coscolluela, BSN Class of 2020

Jeremy Coscolluela

“Early Experiential Learning helped me to settle in faster into the practical expectations of pharmacy practice, despite my limited background in the profession prior to joining the pharmacy program.” - Adewale Ajulo, PharmD Class of 2022 SIX-POINT MASTERY LEARNING “The Roseman Six-Point Mastery Learning Model® has helped me learn better than in traditional education models. The material sticks better, and more profound understanding is achieved.” – Blake Anderson, DMD Class of 2021

“The Six-Point Mastery Learning Model® has helped me in compiling what I believe to be a fantastic study guide for the NAPLEX while simultaneously immersing me in the world of pharmacy in an order that has been relatable.” – Corey Hales, PharmD Class of 2022 “I look at the Six-Point Mastery Learning Model® as a way of Corey Hales organizing my thoughts. By focusing on one subject at a time, using tools or activities, and having early clinical experiences, it has prepared me for successful rotations with my preceptors. I know that it will carry me along throughout my career.” – Jesus Ernesto De La Vega, PharmD Class of 2021
