Right, let’s take stock of the situation, Mr. Spoker.

RIFF REB’S was born in Algeria and lived his formative years in Le Havre, France. He attended The School of Decorative Arts and later co-founded the Azylum Studio, a place of creativity for now-recognized artists.

The men have broken into the spirit-room, Captain!

My men, there is no sense in this! The ship is going down in ten minutes, and what then? To the philosophic eye, there is nothing new in our situation…

“A storybook style that entrancingly depicts deep emotions with its use of stark, macabre colors, harsh shading, and darkly cartoonish faces.” —Publishers Weekly All our lives long, we may have been about to break a blood vessel or to be struck by lightning.

I assure you, with my hand on my heart, I fail to comprehend your attitude!

And that has not prevented us from eating dinner, no, nor putting money in the Savings Bank!!!

This is a very painful sight, Mr. Spoker!

And yet, to the philosophic eye, or whatever it is, they may be said to have Been getting drunk since they came aboard.

GOOD GOD!!!

Let me tell you, Lieutenant, philosophy won’ t have been your strong point in this life.

And that pains me, too.

we go to our hut. again there is the lofty sky with the stars and the on-coming dawn. by my side, stooping and angular, goes kat, my comrade. the outline of the huts are upon us in the dawn like a dark, deep sleep.

there are rumours of an offensive. we go back to the front two days earlier than usual. on the way we pass a shelled schoolhouse. stacked up against its side is a high double wall of yellow, unpolished, brand-new coffins. they still smell of resin, and pine, and the forest. there are at least a hundred.

that’s a good preparation for the offensive.

For more than 30 years WAYNE VANSANT has been writing and illustrating comics and graphic novels on historic and military subjects, beginning with Marvel’s Savage Tales and The ‘Nam. Since then, he has produced Days of Darkness, Battron: The Trojan Woman, Blockade, The War in Korea, Stephan Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage, Normandy, Grant vs. Lee, Bombing Nazi Germany, The Battle of the Bulge, The Red Baron, and others.

they’re for us.

you be thankful if you get so much as a coffin...

don’t talk rot, detering.

...they’ll slip you a waterproof sheet for your old aunt sally of a carcase.

the others jest too, unpleasant jests, but what else can a man do? the coffins are really for us.

“This isn’t a Classics Illustrated version of the story, it’s a very adult, brutal retelling. There’s bravery and cowardice, hope and fear, life and death all through the story. This book will have its place in libraries and in places where graphic adaptations of classic literature are popular.” —ICv2 the first night we try to get our bearings. when it is fairly quiet we can hear the transports behind the enemy lines rolling ceaselessly until dawn. kat says they are bringing up troops: troops, munitions, guns.

...and they have put in trench mortars.

the english artillery has been strengthened. there are at least four more batteries of nine-inch guns...

we are now in low spirits. our own shells have been falling in the trench. if it were simply a mistake in aim no one would say anything, but the truth is that the barrels are worn out.

The Stringbags WRITTEN BY GARTH ENNIS; DRAWN BY P.J. HOLDEN; COLORED BY KELLY FITZPATRICK; LETTERED BY ROB STEEN

Britain’s Royal Navy squadrons went to war equipped with the Fairey Swordfish. A biplane torpedo bomber in an age of monoplanes, the Swordfish was underpowered and undergunned; an obsolete museum piece, an embarrassment. Its crews fully expected to be shot from the skies. Instead, they flew the ancient “Stringbag” into legend.

Churchill A Graphic Biography WRITTEN BY VINCENT DELMAS; ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTOPHE REGNAULT AND ALESSIO CAMMARDELLA; FOREWORD BY ANDREW ROBERTS

Churchill is a unique depiction of the life of Winston Churchill that places his story in the context of the times while enabling the reader to truly visualize the key moments in his life and career.

1934

The Germans have, right now, as I speak to you, between 400 and 500 munitions factories that have been manufacturing day and night for two years . . .

$19.95 978-1-68247-528-7 120 Pages | 9¼ x 12¼ Paperback

Mr Churchill, where are you getting these numbers from?

Nothing! For fear of frightening the population . . .

But I say, better to be frightened today, than dead tomorrow.

Is this doomsayer just about done?

VINCENT DELMAS writes for television, film, and comics. Notably, he is co-author of Charlemagne in the collection Ils ont fait l’Histoire and scriptwriter of the series Synchrone, published by Lombard. CHRISTOPHE REGNAULT, also known as “Bis”, illustrates role playing games (2d sans face), works for various educational comics (Une Bulle en Plus) and for the gaming publications Dofus Mag and IGMag (Ankama).

As for us, what have we done for our country’s air defences?

Allocating 100 million to defence, Mr Churchill, would disrupt industry, cripple exports and demoralize the financial markets.

He’s probably drunk! I refuse to turn this country into a giant arms factory!

I’ll tell you again. The grievous errors in calculation which we are being fooled with today . . .

. . . will make us victims tomorrow!

Mr Churchill. The British people want peace.

Therefore, it naturally follows that their government does too!

36

“A wholly original and fresh approach to historical biography. Churchill would have been delighted to be a comic book hero!” —Phil Reed, Emeritus Director, Churchill War Rooms

"This week, our Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, has gone to Munich to meet with Adolf Hitler . . ."

September 1938

" . . . in an attempt to resolve the crisis around German claims to the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia . . . "

The lights have gone out across Europe. Chamberlain had the choice between war and dishonour, and he chose dishonour . . .

. . . and he will have war!

"The agreements signed provide for German occupation of the Sudetenland and commit the parties to a peaceful way of negotiating their future disputes . . . "

"Conscious that Britain has just avoided a major conflict, some commentators have nicknamed our Prime Minister the Peacemaker!"

The Munich agreement is a cowardly surrender. The Prime Minister behaved like a petty conciliator, feeding the crocodile in the hopes of being eaten last.

Because believe me, the crocodile counts on chewing up all of Europe!

Marcel will stay with you. I am going back to Paris to get things up and running again. When all is calm… I’ll come back for you.

Y…you’re kidding?!

When did you decide this?

I know the Germans. I’ve been working with them for years. They’ve always been reasonable.

Just now.

…Do you realize what the Nazis are going to do to us if we stay? You must have some idea, don’t you?!

You’re completely crazy!… 63

““Nury's story is gripping, brutal, and morally complex, dramatizing the fleeting nature of power. The first chapter spills out a jumbled chronology, presenting this complicated man as an overturned jigsaw puzzle, and the pages that follow fill in the blanks and tighten like a noose. Vallée's art has the cartoonish realism and cinematic verve of Steve Dillon. Thrilling, haunting, superb.”” —Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review Trust me, Eva. You know I wouldn’t be taking the risk if I weren’t certain it’ll be fine.

Why?! You’ve always dreamed

But why?!

of going to America! We’ve talked about it so many times!

I built us a life in this country. I became rich in this country. And now you want me to run away like everyone else? No, no way…

But you…

…not me.

Forget it, Eva. You know how he is when he has decided something.

And her?

I need Lucy in Paris. And besides, it’s not as dangerous for her as it is for you. Of course…

Theresa? Helen? Come say hi to Dad…

The Jewish Brigade BY MARVANO

In the waning years of World War II, as the tragic plight of the European Jews was coming to light in ever more horrific detail, a Jewish fighting force, known as the Jewish Infantry Brigade Group, was born as part of the British Eighth Army. Leslie Toliver, a racecar driver in the pre-war years, eagerly joined the all-volunteer force for a chance to fight with his people against those who sought to murder them. Born in Belgium, MARC VANOPPEN, known as MARVANO, started out as an interior designer. Years later, he began an alternate career as an illustrator, eventually becoming editor-in-chief of the magazine Kuifje, then managing the comics department of Flemish publisher Den Gulden Engel. All the while he published his own comics and went on to write and illustrate dozens of graphic novels over decades, most notably adapting Joe Halderman’s famous novel The Forever War.

“The art works very well in this piece. The artist uses a very expressive, cartoony style that allows for the characters to emote in a way that’s more effective and engaging than a more photorealistic style would permit. The colors also add to the story nicely, especially the way that it juxtaposes the bright Afghan days with the dark Afghan nights. . . . Machete Squad is easily [a strong] title.” —The Fandom Post

Resisted, Arrested, Deported The Concentration Camp Memoir of Francine R. BY BORIS GOLZIO

Francine R. is arrested with her sister by the Gestapo on April 6, 1944 for the resistance actions of their brother. From there, they left in a convoy of women and were then separated. Throughout her journey, she was spared nothing: beatings as soon as she was arrested by the Gestapo, continuous humiliations, train rides in a cattle car, being greeted by wolf dogs on the platform of the concentration camp station, medical experiments, stripping the dead, looting the living, forced labor . . . But also, the permanent hope of getting out of this hell alive to find her sister. $24.95 978-1-68247-891-2 Paperback

Francine told Boris Golzio her story in detail in a long interview. The author decided to transcribe these words in a graphic novel where the text is composed only by Francine’s voice, in her own language, raw, made of hesitations, repetitions and tremors, in order to respect the ontological truth of her words and to give the best possible account of the life of this woman. A Resistance fighter, deported, among thousands of others, but whose every voice, every word is unique and must be saved from oblivion.

BORIS GOLZIO is a comic book author and illustrator. He first worked in advertising but moved to comics in 2000. In 2005, he launched the series Les Postiers with Christian Godard for Bamboo editions under the pseudonym of Du Vigan. In 2009, he resumed the series Le Rugby des Barbares for Hugo BD. Under the name of Boris Golzio, he has done many illustrations, including short stories. He considers The Chronicles of Francine R. the most important of his career, bringing to life his interview with Francine using her own words to tell the moving story of her deportation to her liberation in 1945. He resides in Lyon.
