THE BIG E The Story of the USS Enterprise, Illustrated Edition

DAZZLE Disguise and Disruption in War and Art

By Edward P. Stafford

By James Taylor

A lasting tribute to the USS Enterprise—the Big E—this heavily illustrated new edition tells the classic tale of the carrier that contributed more than any other warship to the naval victory in the Pacific.

While it is a constant throughout history that conflict has inspired and engendered great art, it is a much rarer event for art to impact directly upon the vicissitudes of war. Yet, in the course of World War I, a collision of naval strategy and the nascent modern art movement led to some two thousand British ships going to sea as the largest painted modernist “canvases” in the world. ESSAY CONTESTS for those who dare to write. . . ESSAY CONTESTS HAVE BEEN PART OF THE NAVAL INSTITUTE’S FABRIC SINCE 13 JUNE 1878. On that date, with Commander Alfred Thayer Mahan serving as the chair and vice president of the Naval Institute, Commander William T. Sampson delivered his committee’s proposed rules for the Prize Essay Contest. The proposal was adopted without change, creating the

General Prize Essay Contest

Naval Institute’s first essay contest. In 1948, the Naval Institute’s Board changed the name to the General Prize Essay Contest. Currently, the Naval Institute sponsors 11 essay contests a year. The bottom line in all these contests is the Institute’s commitment to those authors who dare to write to advance the naval profession.

RULES OF THE GAME

“For all naval historians, riveting reading.” — Sunday Telegraph

BEFORE JUTLAND The Naval War in Northern European Waters, August 1914– February 1915

At Jutland in 1916, the British Grand Fleet, the most powerful in the world, finally engaged and should have crushed its German rival. It failed to do so, and this study aims to reveal that important failures in its handling of the battle originated in conflicting styles of command and different understandings of the rules of the game. Andrew Gordon here examines issues of peace and war relevant not only to Jutland but to all fighting services, and to the present as well as the past. When published in hardcover in 1997, this book was praised for providing an engrossing education not only in naval strategy and tactics but in Victorian social attitudes and the influence of character on history. In juxtaposing an operational with a cultural theme, the author comes closer than any historian yet to explaining what was behind the often-described operations of this famous 1916 battle at Jutland. Although the British fleet was victorious over the Germans, the cost in ships and men was high, and debates have raged within British naval circles ever since about why the Royal Navy was unable to take advantage of the situation. The book is the winner of the 1997 Westminster Medal for Military Literature and was the Longman/History Today Book of the Year in 1997.

ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM

T

he Naval Institute Press is pleased to announce the publication of the oral history of Admiral Joseph W. Prueher, USN (Ret.). Admiral Prueher served the U.S. Navy and the nation during a time of conflict in Southeast Asia, increasingly heated global competition with the Soviet Union, and change in how the Navy treated female, AfricanAmerican, and enlisted sailors. He flew hundreds of combat missions in A-6 Intruder attack planes during the Vietnam War. He describes in detail the nature of those operations, life on board an aircraft carrier in a combat theater, and the impact of losing squadron mates to enemy air defenses. He also relates the challenge of flying from carriers at night and in stormy weather during later tours in the North Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. Prueher crowned his military career as Commander in Chief, Pacific. He was a key figure in the 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis with the People’s Republic of China. His political-military duties brought him into contact with China’s Jiang Zemin, Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, and other civilian and military leaders in the Pacific region. He also worked closely with the Clinton administration’s secretaries of defense William Perry and William Cohen and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1999, Prueher was appointed as the U.S. Ambassador to China. He was key to settlement of the April 2001 Hainan incident with China. Other key issues during his tour in Beijing were China’s accession to the World Trade Organization and the Six-Party Talks regarding North Korea’s nuclear program. As Edward J. Marolda, Ph.D., Admiral Prueher’s interviewer, notes in his preface, “An important aspect throughout his oral history is Admiral Prueher’s connection to the men and women who inspired him, shared the dangers of combat with him, and provided him with support and insight. In many cases these individuals became lifelong friends and trusted advisors. In short, this oral history documents the service of one of the nation’s most significant naval leaders and statesmen of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.”

The U.S. Naval Institute’s Oral History Program gratefully accepts tax-deductible gifts of all sizes. This support allows the Institute to preserve the life experiences of today’s service men and women so they may enlighten and inspire future generations.
