Executive Director’s REPORT As Winter turns to Spring, we are preparing to start moving outdoors and enjoy our great game with the sun shinning on us all. Like the weather, the business of tennis continues change and as professionals we need to adapt to those changes. 10 and Under tennis has gone from a controversial teaching method to an industry standard. Tournament formats and high-performance programs continue to evolve as members require more attention to detail from clubs and professionals. Many of us face the challenge of integrating Pickle ball events at their clubs and tennis centers. Pickle ball has become a “tsunami” on the racquet sport landscape over the past 5 years. And like the weather, as professionals, we need to adapt to these changes. The USPTA Eastern Division continues to be a leader in educating and providing opportunity to our membership. Our Annual Conference will be held May 3-5 at the Doral Arrowwood Conference Center Hotel in Westchester. We have a strong line
up of presenters and programs for the conference. Please make time to attend this year’s conference. You will earn 8 credits for registering for the conference and one credit for every 2 hours of educational events you attend. You can earn your 6 credits in one day. Please take advantage of this opportunity! We will also be hosting a Pickle ball certification on May 25th at the Solaris Sports Club in Yorktown Heights, NY. There are limited spots, so do not procrastinate. We will be having workshops and webinars throughout the Spring and Summer, please register early. Members are working on getting their 6 credits and space is limited for some educational opportunities. Our Division continues to grow. We had a 4% increase in membership in 2018 and we are trending at an 8% growth in 2019. Our sport continues to evolve and we need to keep up with the changes and challenges ahead of us. I look forward to seeing you at our conference in May and thank you for being a member of the USPTA. Remember this is your association, be an active part of it.

The 36th Annual Instructors and Coaches Clinic was held Friday, March 22 at Elevate Fitness Club in Dewitt, NY. The Clinic was 6 hours of presentations on the part of instructors from all over Central New York and organized by Western District President Steve Pekich. All presentations concerned tennis tactics and strokes in drill format. The attendees were a mix of USPTA pros and many high school coaches who were in the process of beginning the New York high school boys seasons. The Clinic ran from 9am to 3pm and featured lots of information and exercise, as attendees were expected to do the demonstrations of the drills themselves (which they actually look forward to every year!).

USPTA EASTERN / 2nd Qtr Edition 2019
PRESS RELEASE
USPTA Receives Full Accreditation Status by USTA February 21, 2019 LAKE NONA, Fla.– Yesterday, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced that the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) has received full accreditation under the USTA’s new accreditation program for organizations and institutions that certify U.S. tennis teaching professionals, making the USPTA the first and only accredited association. “The quality of tennis delivery in our country is the single most important ingredient to growing tennis participation,” said Gordon Smith, USTA CEO and Executive Director. “In order to attract and retain new and diverse generations of tennis players, we must do everything possible to ensure their on-court experience is of the highest caliber. Raising the standards for teaching professionals in the United States will positively impact players of all ages and
Accreditation will run for a three-year period abilities.” Moving forward, the USTA and USPTA will collaborate on a wide array of education initiatives. New certification standards will require new USPTA applicants to complete significant experiential learning. This will include on-the-job training along with precertification education, online course work and face-to-face workshops. “On behalf of the USPTA board of directors and the Executive Committee, we are proud to have achieved full accreditation status,” said Gary Trost, USPTA President. “We received our provisional accreditation in March 2018 and being able to achieve
the comprehensive provisional and full accreditation process within a year reflects the vision of our board, Executive Committee members and staff – both past and present. Being fully accredited from the governing body of tennis in the U.S. is a true indication that we are the leaders in tennisteaching certification.” With the shared goal of ensuring that tennis is a safe sport for kids, the USPTA will require all new members to complete the USTA’s SafePlay program, which includes a criminal background screening and education on prevention of misconduct in sport. Now that the USPTA is a fully-accredited teaching organization, USPTA pros will receive a host of benefits, including priority listing on the Net Generation website, as well as a wide array of online and face-toface education and USTA marketing and promotional opportunities.

Our Story A passionate company with unique history
Led by founder Jim Fromuth and CEO Pat Shields, we are a tennis wholesale distributor based in West Lawn, PA. We first opened our doors nearly 50 years ago. The Fromuth Family liked and played the game of tennis, so they bought a stringing machine and had a few tennis frames to sell in the shop. In the late 1970s, tennis began to be televised and business took a different direction. Fromuth Tennis was born. As the tennis industry grew, so did our selection of racquets, strings and apparel. We began helping small pro shops get the product they needed to boost their own business. Then & Now CEO Pat Shields and Founder Jim Fromuth
Today, we have a 25,000 sq. ft. warehouse. On a busy day in August, UPS trucks are lined up outside waiting to load more than 800 packages. Although bigger, we are still a family-owned operation with more than 70 employees who share a passionate drive for tennis and helping our customers.

USPTA EASTERN / 2nd Qtr Edition 2019
How to Provide Great Customer Service... 1. Anticipate the needs of the player. Use knowledge about the player and question them about their game to predict future needs. These needs might be unusual or recurring, either way getting to know your players shows them that they have not been forgotten and you have their best interests in mind. 2. Greet players with a smile. This should be done with a warm and friendly greeting as soon as they enter your premises. Even if you are dealing with players over the phone, it’s thought that a warm smile can be sensed. 3. Make time for the player. In a busy environment it can be frustrating for a teaching pro if a player wants to stop and chat when they have a lot of work to get done. However, the player will be able to tell if the teaching pros heart is not in the conversation, so always make the player top priority. 4. Make students feel important. This can be achieved through little details such as addressing them by their name or making them feel genuinely welcome when they taking a lesson. If students feel valued and appreciated by a teacher then they are more likely to return and make more purchases. 5. Apologize when things go wrong. No business is perfect all of the time and mistakes may be made. Often it is the way that the business deals with this mistake rather than the mistake itself that will determine whether the customer returns to the business. As soon as it is realized that a mistake has been made, the business should admit the mistake, apologize sincerely and do everything in their power to rectify the mistake. 6. Give customers more than they expect. Customers are more likely to feel loyalty towards a company that have exceeded their expectations, both in terms of customer service and the products that they have purchased. Everybody likes to be
16
surprised now and then! 7. Ask customers for feedback. A business may think that it is performing well in terms of customer service but they can never really be sure until they ask their customers what they think. After this information has been gathered it should be acted on to fix specific issues and improve areas that are identified as having weaknesses. Take time to thank customers for their help and reward them accordingly. 8. Treat employees well. In most cases it will be the employees of a business who have the most face to face contact with the customers. The better they are treated, the happier they will be while at work and this will be evident in the way that they deal with customers. The atmosphere that is created by a good working environment will be more pleasant for customers too. 9. Be truthful about the products that are being sold. If a customer asks advice
about a product then the advice that is given should be honest. If a customer is mislead in order to make a sale then they will not appreciate it when they find the product doesn’t work as expected and probably won’t return. 10. Bend the rules if needed. If a regular customer makes a special request that would not normally be part of the business policy then this request should be given consideration rather than the customer being told no. Customers will appreciate that you have empowered your employees with common sense and the ability to see the “big picture”. Author Ian Miller is Editor of Customer Service Manager Magazine – the leading resource and community for customer service professionals.
