The USPTA World Conference is Going Virtual! John R. Embree, USPTA CEO

ach year when we produce the July issue of ADDvantage, it is focused on the upcoming World Conference. We provide a schedule of specialty courses and seminars, highlight the social activities planned, preview our awards luncheon and promote the Merchandise and Trade Show. All of that is done to entice you to travel to the venue and invest in your professional development. Needless to say, 2020 is a year unlike any other we have ever seen. With the whole world turned upside down, the economy struggling and our health and safety foremost on everyone’s mind, the USPTA was faced with a gut-wrenching decision about the viability of hosting our usual annual gathering in September. New Orleans was such a fantastic destination for us in 2015, so everyone was excited about returning to the Crescent City! Earlier this year, the landscape changed dramatically in just a few short months. With New Orleans being a hot spot for the pandemic, there is no certainty when the city will re-open for business. Even though the event is still two months away, how many of you would feel comfortable traveling in the first place, let alone to a place where COVID-19 was rampant in March and April? Does the French Quarter or Harrah’s Casino have any allure at this moment? With the majority of our members

having faced financial hardship for two months or longer, how many could afford to take the time to come to a conference when they could stay home teaching and making up for lost time? How many clubs that usually pay for their pros to attend are unable to do so this year? Would vendors want to come to a trade show while their businesses are suffering? How would we handle social distancing in seminar rooms or around the indoor court, at our committee gatherings and awards presentation? How would we sanitize our merchandise area or the session rooms in between all seminars? These were all the tough questions that the staff and our board have wrestled with ever since the pandemic began. Even though a segment of our membership would do anything they could to attend, we determined that the risks would just be too sizeable to overcome. Thus, we have elected to

conduct a virtual World Conference this year so that everyone can stay home, stay safe, yet still get valuable education credits, industry news and product information from our vendor community from the comfort of their home. Pivoting like this is a giant undertaking for our staff, especially at the eleventh hour. But, we are up to the challenge and know we can put together a dynamic World Conference online. Tough times such as these require innovative thinking and proactive leadership. The USPTA has always led the way when it comes to progressive action. Now is the time to take an alternative approach to providing first-rate virtual education. Details about our plans will be highlighted in next month’s edition of ADDvantage. Struggle Leads To Opportunity Bill Mountford, USPTA Vice President

or many members, these have been the most challenging times of our lives. Businesses are closing, careers will be shifting and uncertainties about the “safety” of playing tennis will linger. The question is: how do we emerge from this fog? The resources being shared among those in our industry are impressive. USPTA Master Professional Jorge Capestany made a remarkable offer to all members to sell off his online instructional courses while allowing them to keep 100% of the profits. Jorge put in tremendous effort to support fellow members who have been laid off, furloughed or are struggling to make ends meet. What an incredibly selfless act. The USPTA got involved as well, emphasizing continuing education opportunities, such as expanded access to TennisResources.com, at no cost to members. With the pandemic effectively shutting down all tennis courts, USPTA members had unprecedented time on their hands. The USPTA correctly reasoned that this time could be used effectively to become better and more informed teaching professionals for when the time comes to return to the court. The participation was fantastic, and the number of members taking advantage of this offer exceeded ambitious expectations. The USPTA COVID-19 Task Force was formed and served to share viewpoints and best solutions from professionals around the country at all levels of the industry. This task

force also served to inform local groups petitioning state governments regarding re-opening procedures and informing them of the inherent social distancing in tennis. The USTA Relief Fund was another generous offer available to USPTA members. The USTA is offering dues relief for 2021 for all certified members in good standing. The Tennis Industry United collaborations, among others, have been a silver lining during such a dark time. The term “we are all in this together” can sound trite, but it is truly the case. The USPTA Board of Directors, leaders from all divisions serving on the Executive Committee and the National Staff continue to collaborate to find solutions for our members. Every single member has been affected, and each of us has absorbed hardship. This shared experience is one we might never have imagined, but it has also fortified our need to be cooperative, collaborative and solution oriented. Among the new realities we face, certified teaching professionals will garner more of their education online than ever before. This is practical and more efficient, and this pandemic has forced us to adapt. Clubs and business will look for the most versatile professionals to fill their staffs, placing a premium on well-rounded, experienced teaching professionals. Broad training is vital. Tournaments will be forced to adopt different formats to remain safe and relevant, so innovative organizers

will shine. We learn from trial and error, but also by taking online seminars from the most successful competition organizers. Traditional pro shops will struggle, but direct-to-consumer business transactions will thrive for companies that we promote. Reinvention will become more essential than ever. Tennis coaches might need to also be competent organizers of platform tennis. Monetizing activities like pickleball (or even ping pong!) will become crucial. Discovering new ways to profit from virtual or online instruction will become a priority. Reduction in staffing will mean that jack-of-all-trades expertise will be required in racquet stringing and accounting and marketing and scheduling, and, yes, on-court coaching as well. Thankfully, tennis is a sport that can be played with safe social distancing – and that will really matter over the coming years. The basic dynamic that struggle can lead to opportunity will prevail. We are a strong trade association, and this career path we have chosen binds us together. I truly hope that each of us makes it through this pandemic and that we emerge better equipped than ever in dealing with a rapidly changing world. *

Passion, Perseverance Mark Josh Surowski’s Coaching Career Lucas Casás, USPTA Communications

osh Surowski always knew that if he was patient, his opportunity would come. He was a recent grad and working as a court maintenance man at two clubs in Louisville, Ky., waiting for his chance to coach a tennis lesson. At first, Surowski’s supervisor only gave him “the lessons that nobody really wanted,” he said. “Then I kept going and got more and more people that were requesting me, so they were filling up my schedule and I was able to start full-time.” In hindsight, it’s really no wonder Surowski was so popular among his students. Surowski’s father Lenny is a long-time tennis professional and started taking Josh to lessons when he was around 10 years old. Surowski played his freshman year of college tennis at the University of Louisville before finishing his career

at Indiana University Southeast, where he was a second team AllAmerican in 2005. Surowski eventually worked his way up to tennis director at Harmony Landing CC, a small club in Louisville. But after a couple years, a change of ownership offered Surowski a chance to learn from the experiences of Alladin Mitha. Soon, he met Magnus Gustafsson, a tennis pro who’d just moved to Louisville from Vero Beach, Fla. Surowski made enough of an impression on Gustafsson that he recommended Surowski to Sam Garcia, a USPTA Elite Professional and the tennis director at Quail Valley Golf Club in Florida. “When you’re looking for a pro, you call your other pros that you’ve known for a long time,” Garcia said. “We interviewed Josh twice. The first time

it didn’t work out, we had someone in Florida. Then a year later we hired him. We brought him in town and everybody absolutely loved him.” Surowski’s ability as a teacher was apparent from the beginning, but his aspirations extended beyond the court. He had some prior experience, but he needed to continue learning how to manage programming and other offcourt aspects of the job, especially at a large club. “I told him, ‘If you want to be a director of tennis at a big club, you need to become a USPTA Elite Professional,” Garcia said. “He did.”

Why not jump in the front?

“When I first started, I wasn’t very good at coaching, honestly,” Surowski said. He could lean on his skills as a player, but knowing proper technique isn’t the same as communicating it. So he started watching USPTA continuing education videos online whenever he could. “That gave me a lot more confidence to say, ‘Okay, this is what I need to know. You can do this.’” It also added a new sport to his repertoire — pickleball. “I saw pickleball exploding. I could just see it coming,” Surowski said. “There is a buzz and I wanted to be one of the people in the front with the buzz, not one of the people standing back fighting it off. I felt like it’s coming no matter what, so why not jump in the front? I also thought getting more certifications of different sports will give me more opportunities.” Surowski also committed himself

to attending Regional Education Days and other USPTA coaches workshops around Florida. He would drive to venues across the state, showing up late if he had to, so he could listen to a presentation — without missing a single lesson. It didn’t matter if it was a seminar on court maintenance or teaching a new drill; Surowski did everything possible to become the best coach he could. There was also the added benefit of networking, and that soon paid off. “Next thing you know, he met a pro who called and said, ‘Hey, did you hear there’s a director of tennis job in Orlando?’” Garcia said. “He’s networking instead of just looking at the website. Within eight months [of upgrading to Elite], he got that job and he was so excited. And he has been excited ever since he’s been there.”

Itching to get back

It’s been almost two years since Surowski became director of tennis and pickleball at Reunion Resort in Orlando. One of his first changes was to host tennis clinics every day and to increase them from an hour to 90 minutes “because I felt like if they get here, let’s have them here longer so I can grow their game more.”

The biggest change Surowski has implemented, though, has been an increase in evening and social programming “to create a community here.” “My goal was to have not just people come play tennis, but I want to build friendships, have their whole social lives built around this,” Surowski said. “We’ll do a Tuesday night clinic where it’s like a social every Tuesday. Players come out 7 to 8:30 and then eat afterwards. We fill the place up and people can’t wait every Tuesday.” Reunion has two “really nice pickleball courts,” Surowski says, and the sport has proven incredibly popular among Reunion’s members — to the point that he’s able to bring tennis players into pickleball and vice versa. “I had people come in through pickleball because it’s easier to access or their friend plays,” he said. “So many players intermingle and now they’re doing both, so I have a daily tennis clinic from 8:30 to 10 [a.m.] and a pickleball clinic from 10 to 11 and I have a lot of players stay for the pickleball. “It helps to have more activities and being able to get those players

that play pickleball that would never consider tennis or pickleball, and now they’re tennis fanatics that came through pickleball.” Keeping that sense of community has been difficult during the coronavirus pandemic, but Surowski gets creative by sending videos of drills to clients that can’t make it out to the courts. “Members who live in Canada and different places can’t get down here, so I’ll make a video so they can still feel like they’re part of the program,” Surowski said. “Sometimes they’ll shoot me a text and say, ‘Hey, we miss the family.’ That’s encouraged them. They’re just itching to get back.” *

Special Announcement on Dues Relief for Certified Tennis Professionals John Embree, USPTA CEO

s mentioned last month, the Tennis Industry United Task Force has been working hard to provide resources for tennis-teaching professionals and clubs/facilities during the worldwide crisis we are experiencing. Teaching professionals have filled out the survey and the data have magnified the struggles many in our Association are facing. All of the stakeholders serving on the TIU task force recognize that those on the front lines of delivering our sport (tennis facilities and professionals) need help. Thus, I am excited to announce that the USTA is coming to the aid of those pros who are certified members in good standing with the USPTA. Owing to the incredible generosity of the USTA and USPTA our mutual commitment to assist those who are responsible for delivering tennis each and every day, your 2021 dues for professional members will be FREE. While we are not in a position to help provide financial relief immediately as some have hoped, this gesture is significant for our certified professionals. As of this writing, many details of the subsidy are still being worked through, but the guts of the program are such that the USTA will provide a grant to the USPTA to cover the lion’s share of each member’s dues in 2021. The USPTA Board and Executive Committee have voted to cover the remainder. In addition, there is a similar offer

for our Recreational Coaches who are interested in converting to become Certified Instructors. Because of the pandemic, all of the face-to-face workshops were cancelled for three months, meaning it would have been unrealistic for Rec Coaches to meet the obligations of transitioning their status over to the new category by Dec. 31, which was the original target date. Thus, current Rec Coaches and Rec Coach Applicants will have from Sept. 1, 2020 until June 30, 2021 (a six-month extension) to make that transition. If they are able to do so, their dues will also be FREE, depending on when they complete the certification. The USTA will also grant them a subsidy toward those dues with the USPTA making up the difference. This is an incredible offer that will be communicated with regularity over the next four months. We don’t want any member to miss out because they were not made aware of this opportunity. As a result, you will see messaging in social media, on our website, in ADDvantage, through eblasts and even in video. Please make a point to share this plan with your colleagues and encourage them to make sure that they meet the qualifications. I applaud the USTA and USPTA for “stepping up” to support a relief package that is bound to be appreciated by our membership. It goes to show when the industry works together for the common good, amazing things can happen. *

In order to qualify for the grant, USPTA members must: 1. Teach and reside in the USA 2. Be a certified teaching professional in good standing as of Oct. 1, 2020 3. Pass Safe Play training, policy terms and a background screening before Oct. 1, 2020 4. Be current with their continuing education requirements. For those whose cycle ends in 2020, you must have completed your 12 credits before Oct. 1, 2020. 5. Show “good faith” and introduce 50 “new” people, be they kids or adults, to the sport. We want to welcome people back to tennis that may have left, as well as a new cadre of players that want to take advantage of the health attributes of tennis while observing social distancing, which is intrinsic to our sport.

Exam reservations must be made by calling the USPTA World Headquarters at 407-634-3050 ext. 2 at least 21 days prior to the dates listed. Each date includes an exam and upgrade. PTCA I is included in the two-day exam. Exam cancellations must be received no later than 14 days before the exam, or a cancellation fee will be charged accordingly.

Member News Rachelle Lifpitz, an 18year USPTA member, has authored “Just Love Tennis 4 Kids”, a tennis manual and coloring book for children ages 3 and older. The book engages kids through learning to love tennis and provides parents and coaches with fun activities and tools for children both on and off the tennis court. Additionally, the kids can use the manual as a coloring book. In this book, kids will learn what equipment to use, rules of the court, how to hold a racquet, how to move their feet, all strokes, how to play fun games, etiquette and sportsmanship. They will also learn to play a full match. “Just Love Tennis 4 Kids” is available on Amazon.com and portions of proceeds go to Soles4Soles, a non-profit organization helping families in need. *
