SPTA's 1994 National Convention has come and gone, and 'm happy to report that most people rated it one of the best. The La Quinta Resort & Club was a magnificent setting for all of the events, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Our goal of " Growing the Game' certainly was accomplished. While we didn't succeed in chan9.ing the course of history where tennis is oncerned , we did a lot to boost the attitudes of the people who attended the convention . The education , tournament competition and special activities demonstrated that there are a lot of people who care about tennis and are working to improve its status among today's top sports.

The nine-day convention entertained and educated everyone in every imaginable way.

The World TeamTennis/USPTA match attracted a crowd of about 1,000 people including local members of the public. Billie Jean King brought along Luke Jenson and other professional players to challenge a team made up of USPTA members and Vijay Amritraj. What ensued was a stimulating mix of fun , camaraderie and competition . still don't know who had the most fun the fans or the players.

USPTA Little TennisTM the Association's introductory tennis program for children 3 to 10, was the highlight of the convention. It was unveiled through a seminar arid Specialty Course and was a big hit with professionals and parents. Little TennisTM was especially popular with the many children who attended the convention , since it allowed them to

participate in a convention activity specifically geared to their age level Many proud parents had a great time cheering on their children's fun learning experience.

I encourage everyone to continue promoting Little Tennis. Also, you can vyatch for new program information and tips on teaching children in each issue of ADDvantage1 beginning with this one.

The 1994 convention was made possible with the support of many people and organizations. USPTA especially would like to extend a speciaJ thank you to its endorsees Penn Racquet Sports and Wilson Racquet Sports. These two companies did a fantastic job of making the convention one that we'll remember for years. o

Celebrate 'February Focus on Education' USPTA's " February Focus on Education" is a special month-long promotion highlighting USPTA's Continuing Education Program- the world 's most extensive system for educating teaching professionals.

February is an especially busy month for US PTA's education program, with activities scheduled nearly every day at various sites around the country The US PTA School of Pro "Shop Management at The Super Show/95 in Atlanta will kick off February's educational events. Numerous divisional conventions and other learning opportunities are scheduled throughout the month.

USPTA's " February Focus on Education" will be promoted through upcoming issues of ADDvantage, other tennis publications and associations. This special promotion will show the entire tennis industry that USPTA professionals are committed to continuing education.

You 're encouraged to attend divisional conventions, enjoy a USPTA Specialty Course, and learn now skills. Whatever you do, make education a part of your own personal "February Focus on Education, " and help us take our profession to new heights.

USPTA grows the game with ~e

1994 National Convention was an exciting week, filled with entertaining tennis, informative seminars and numerous opportunities for USPTA professionals to greet old acquaintances and meet new ones.

Approximately 2,000 people from across the United States and around the world attended the 67th annual convention, Sept. 17-25, at La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, Calif 'This year's National Convention focused on growing the game of tennis, said Tim Heckler USPTA CEO. 'Through education , the introduction of USPTA Little Tennisr• and other events, USPTA members learned more about promoting tennis to people of all ages.

For some, this was their first experience at a USPTA National Convention .

'This is my first convention and it's been a real good time, said Frank Fanning of Walden , NY love the desert.

Fanning , currently working toward USPTA membership, took advantage of the testing opportunities and completed the Certification Exam during the convention.

Other people who attend the annual event make it a permanent part of their yearly calendars.

make sure to schedule the convention in my calendar every year," said Dudley Bell of Lyndonville, Vt. Bell has been a USPTA member for 35 years.

Tournaments The week got off to a hot and competitive start with the $30,000 USPTA National Championships, presented by Wilson Racquet Sports. Under the desert sun and in temperatures topping 100 degrees, USPTA's best tennis players competed for the prizes. Laura Glitz of York, Pa. and Sean Brawley of Pacific Palisades, Cal if won the women's and men's open singles divisions, respectively.

The USPTA TeamTennis Championships, presented by World TeamTennis, became a state rivalry when the Cal ifornia Division's No. 1 team defeated Northern Cal ifornia's No. 1 team for the title.

94Natlona1Conventlon Continuing Education requirements, and members who attended any of the more than 20 four-hour Specialty Courses earned two credits per course. Some of the well-known speakers who taught seminars and Specialty Courses included Billie Jean King , Stan Smith and Jack Groppel , Ph .D.

World TeamTennis One of the most exciting events of the week was the World TeamTennis exhibition , starring Luke Jenson, Billie Jean King and Vijay Amritraj.

Parties The convention parties were a big success again this year, with the tournament player party starting the festivities, Sept. 19. Wilson Racquet Sports hosted a tennis carnival.

Tuesday, Sept. 20, complete with game booths and mr. peeWee .tennis.

The following night, the National Tennis Buying Show cocktail party Kicked off the buying show, which featured nearly 100 exhibitors displaying their latest merchandise and technology. Penn Racquet Sports entertained the attendees Thursday, Sept. 22 , with a live band and downhome barbecue. The parties ended w ith the Battle Bash Extravaganza, Sept. 24.

The USPTA National Tennis Buying Show attracts many people who are interested in viewing the goods and services offered by the manufacturers.

'The USPTA convention is awesome, said Jenson. It's important for everyone to know that many of our country 's great players were the result of coaching from USPTA pros.

The USPTA 'Hoagsters' defeated the King 's Aces, 16-1 3, in a two-hour exhibition match .

Hoagster's team members were Amritraj, John Austin, Kim Barry, Tracy Houk-Kuhn, Mark Fairchilds, Lisa Seemann , Dexter MacBride and Desi McBride. They were coached by USPTA Vice President Will Haag. The King 's Aces were made up of King, Jenson, Rachel Jenson, Cammy MacGregor, and Danie Visser, and were coached by Angel Lopez, the 1994 World TeamTennis Coach of the Year and USPTA San Diego Division President.

Luke Jenson was a big hit, especially with one young boy, who was overheard to say, 'Andre Agassi used to be my favorite player, but now Luke is. When grow up, I want to play just like him , and I want to be like him.

The Midwest Division continued its winning streak, capturing fi rst place in the Battle of the Divisions for the th ird year in a row. The ntermountain Division came in second , and Texas finished third .

The traditional Lip Sync competition was replaced this year by the karaoke contest, and USPTA professionals proved they have talent in areas other than tennis. The top three winners were represented by solo performances. Missouri Valley came in first with an excellent performance of Three Times a Lady- Midwest was second with Fire and Rain, and Southern came in third with I

Golf tournaments After putting down their racquets, many USPTA professionals picked up their golf clubs and joined the 1994 USPTA Team Scramble, presented by Wilson , and the USPTA Cup, presented by Pro Penn .

The team of Mary Pat Faley, Dino Bondallian, Brad Ferreira and Barton Clark came in first in the team scramble with a score of 64. Tom Galbraith made the longest putt in the team scramble, and Linda Howell made the longest drive.

The USPTA Cup had winners in several categories, including longest drive, Mike Flynn; longest putt, Greg McTaggart, first place gross, John Janes; and first place net,

Richard K. Maier.

The 1995 National Convention is scheduled for Sept. 16-24, at the Boca Raton (Fla.) Resort & Club, USPTA's national resort headquarters. Next year's convention theme is "Game, Set, Success," and it will be the third time the convention is held at the popular location . o ADDvantage October/November 1994

Kathy Woods began her term as the new national president, Dave Porter, Ed.D. took office as a vice president, and Mark McMahon began serving as secretarytreasurer.

She is a past president of the USPTA Middle States Division , and was honored as the division's Professional of the Year in 1988 and 1991 As a player, Woods won the USTA National 30s Doubles Hardcourt Championships n 1993, and earned the USPTA national ranking of No. 1 women's singles in 1982 and No. 1 women's doubles in 1985.

Gordon Collins, former national president, fills the immediate past president position on the board , and former president Jack Justice leaves the board after 10 years to serve at large on the Executive Committee.

All other board members were re-elected to the board. They are Kurt Kamperman, first vice president; and Will Haag , Joseph Thompson and Jim Davis, vice presidents.

Woods has been a USPTA member since 1977 and on the Association's national board of directors since 1988. She is a frequent speaker at tennis conventions throughout the country. nternationally, she has made presentations at forums in Japan for the JPTA 8

A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Woods is on the professional staff at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Fla. and travels throughout the year to provide tennis programming for corporate entertainment.

Porter is the men's and women's head tennis coach and an associate professor of physical education at Brigham Young University-Hawaii in Laie. He also is the d rector of tennis for Hawaii Porter Aces, a group of USPTA professionals which services Oahu 's Army bases.

Porter is a speaker for USPTA Specialty Courses'M sport science symposia, coaching clinics and workshops. He has conducted coaching clinics in the former USSR and the

South Pacific, and has represented the U.S. nformation Agency as part of the Sports America Program in South America.

He served as a member of the national USPTA Executive Committee from 1988 to 1994. He was honored as the USPTA Hawaii Division Coach of the Year in 1990, 1991 and 1992, and the Hawaii Division Tester of the Year in 1992, 1993 and 1994.

Porter is a member of the National Association of ntercollegiate Athletics National Tennis Committee, and is the past president of the NAIA tennis coaches association . He holds a doctorate from the University of Hawaii McMahon assumes the position of secretary-treasurer McMahon a USPTA Master Professional , is the director of tennis at Dunwoody (Ga .

Country Club, near Atlanta. McMahon is a three-term past president of the USPTA Florida Division , and has McMahon held national USPTA rankings in singles and doubles.

McMahon is knowledgeable in club operations and programming , personnel development and pro shop management. He speaks at USPTA conventions, USTA Tennis Teachers Workshops and ATP Coaches Workshops.

He has served as a USTA clinician, and chairman of various USPTA and USTA committees, and established two local USTA Tennis ndustry Councils. McMahon is a member of the Prince and Penn advisory staffs.

The 10-member board consists of eight voting members: the president, five vice presidents, the secretary-treasurer and the immediate past president. Two nonvoting members Tim Heckler, USPTA CEO, and Paul Waldman legal counsel attend board meetings to observe the proceedings and offer input to the board . The board meets several times during the year between meetings of the Executive Committee. 6

Members, endorsees honore~ O n e of the hrghlights of this year's National Convention was the annual Awards Breakfast, during which members, divisions and endorsees were honored for their industry participation and service to the Association .

One of the Association's most coveted awards, the Alex Gordon Award for the National USPTA Professional of the Year, went to Kurt Kamperman.

Tennis has a f!lajor challenge, Kamperman said. 'The competition for America's leisure time is at an all-time high .

It's not going to happen in a board room or committee meeting . The only place a resurgence of tennis is going to happen is on the tennis courts. And the only people who can make this happen on the tennis courts are the tennis-teaching professionals.

Kamperman, a USPTA Master Professional is director of¡ tennis for Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C. He tias been active in the tennis industry since 1977 and speaks frequently at many national conventions and workshops. Kamperman recently published Two Racquets and a Briefcase, a resource guide and workbook for tennis professionals, and is a contributing editor to Tennis Buyer's Guide and Court Products Report.

Kamperman is the first vice president on USP>lA's national Board of Directors.

Coaching honors Paul Xanthos, tennis coach for Los Angeles Pierce College, was honored as Coach of the Year.

During his 28 years at Pierce College, he amassed a 550-94 win-loss record, led teams to 23 conference championships, and experienced winning streaks of 96, 50, 37 and 27 wins in a row. This fall , he became the first junior college coach to be inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.

The High School Coach of the Year award went to Jay Kramer, the varsity boys' tennis coach at Hinsdale (Ill.) Central High School. Mervyn Webster, coach of touring professional Lori McNeil is the Touring Coach of the Year. He is from Wichita, Kan .

On-court awards

the men's open singles and doubles divisions in the 1993 USPTA National Championships. His collegiate successes include four-time, All-American honors at the University of Arkansas, and the 1982 NCAA National Doubles Championships.

Other play~l. award winners were Sal Castillo, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. and Bob McKinley, San Antonio, co-winners of the Male Player of the Year (35 and over); Sue Bartlett, Chattanooga, Tenn . Female Player of the Year (35 and over); and Howard Hunt, Birmingham, Ala. Male Player of the Year (45 and over).

Community service Deborah Gavin, a teaching professional and assistant manager at the Canyon Hills Racquet Club in Escondido, Calif. received the USTA/USPTA Community Service Award. .9 This award honors ~ USPfA professionals who Gavin have been active in community service on behalf of the USJA.

at USPrA Awards Breakfast Barnes wins USPTA's newest award

SPTA member Tim Barnes is the recipient of the new USPTA Industry Excellence Award, an award developed to honor the person who has done the most to grow the game of tennis.

'Tim is very involved with tennis at the grassroots level and has been instrumental in 'growing' the sport of tennis in his area, said Tim Heckler, CEO of Barnes l,JSPTA USPTA is proud to recognize his efforts in promoti1lg tennis and increasing interest in the sport.

Barnes is the director of tennis programs for the Kiwanis Recreation Center in Tempe, Ariz. head coach for the USPTA-Phoeni x Area Training Center and Phoenix District Tennis Association Junior Exce llence Program ; and coach for the Southwest Junior Zonal Team and the PDTA Junior Interdistrict Team.

A the Kiwanis Recreation Center, he and his staff service 100 to 150 juniors per eightweek season in clinics and leagues including National Junior Tennis Leagues and Junior Team Tennis.

As part of his efforts to grow the game, Barnes initiated after-school tennis programs at two local elementary schools through the Tempe After School Enrichment Program .

Barnes also worked with the SWTA junior schools program coordinator, Amy Vogt, to promote tennis to more than eight local elementary schools and 1,000 children with school assemblies and physical education class in-service programs.

Barnes also has developed and supervises several tennis programs for adults, including lessons and leagues, and directs junior and adult tournaments.

Barnes hosted a USPTA Across America Tennis Day event this spring, and has been active in USPTA divisional and national conventions, as well as other USPTA programs. Barnes serves on the marketing committee for the USTA Southwest Section for the 1994-95 term . <3

men's and women's open singles and doubles winners of the 1994 $30,000 USPTA National Championships were firsttime winners of the tournament. The championships, held in conjunction with the National Convention, attracted USPTA's best players, who competed on the cou rts of La Quinta Resort & Club (La Quinta, Calif.). The tou rnament was presented by Wilson Racquet Sports.

No. 1 seed Laura Glitz of York, Pa. defeated No. 2 seed Tracy Houk-Kuhn of Rancho Cordova, Calif 6-1 6-1 in the women 's open singles competition . Gl itz is a teaching professional at the Yorktown Racquet and Fitness Club in York. She played on the women 's professional tou r up until about four months ago, where her top singles ranking was No. 280. She was ranked No. 3 in the 1993 USPTA rankings. " This is the fourth time 've played the tournament, and it feels great to finally wrn it, Glitz said .

On her way to the final round , Glitz defeated Susie Campbell , Tracie Johnstone and Mary Norwood in the 32-draw division. n the men's open singles competition, No. 5 seed Sean Brawley of Pacific Palisades, Calif defeated No. 3 seed R.J. the Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo, Calif defeated Warren Pretorius, Jim Kohr, Roberto Saad and Jeff Cohen on his way to the finals in the 64-draw division . n men's doubles competition , No. 2 seeded Mark Basham of Santa Barbara, Calif. , and Antony Emerson of Aventura, Fla. teamed up to win the title. They defeated the No. 1 seeded team of Dexter MacBride and Desi McBride, 6-2 , 6-3.

The No. 1 seeded team of Linda Howell and Lisa Seemann won the women's doubles competition by defeating the No. 2 team of Kim Barry and Tory Plunkett, 6-3, 6-7 6-4. Seemann was part of the 1990 and 1991 winning doubles teams in USPTA s nternational Tenn s Teachers Championships.

All of the players worked tremendously hard while competing in the desert heat, said tournament director Frank Kelly. 'The level of play at this year 's National Championships was as high as it has ever been .

Division honors Six divisions took national honors for their accompl ishments during the past year. The California Division received the Most Improved Newsletter award , and the Midwest Division received the Newsletter of the Year award for the second year.

The Division of the Year award went to the Southern Division, which also received an award for the division with the greatest increase in new members. The San Diego Division was honored for the greatest percentage of increase in new members.

SPTA added two hono rary members to its ranks at the National Convention . Rod Laver and Welby Van Horn are the newest members in the special membership category, wh ich honors a person who has made an outstanding co~tribution to tennis or US PTA. Laver is the only two-time winner of the coveted 'Grand Slam of Tennis, winning the singles title in the Australian French Wimbledon and U.S. championships in a calendar year. He won .___......;..=------"'--..... the Wimbledon singLaver les title four times, twice as an amateur and twice as a professional player, and earned two U.S. Open titles in singles. With a lifelong commitment

to the sport and a dedication to sportsmansh ip, Laver has served as a role model for many of tennis' top professional players.

Laver has been a USPTA member since 1981 Van Horn s a nationally and internationally recogn ized player and teacher whose career spans more than 40 years.

He ranked among the top four players in the wo rld for seve ral years, and won many Van Horn amateur and professional championsh ips, including the U.S. Professional Championship. Van Horn also holds the record as the youngest finali st to play in the U.S. Open at Forest Hills. His dedicated efforts to build tennis in Puerto Rico produced top junior players. o

Business plan necessary for success

Although there always will be the occasional entrepreneur or business tycoon who is successful without a game plan, the majority of successful people not only had a plan, but they believed in it and were willing to be patient in their endeavors.

In ~erica, the last few decades have brought a mentality of short-term planning. Americans want everything to be successful the day before yesterday. This has hurt the economy, particularly when comparing American business successes with those of the Japanese, who plan for the long term.

An excellent example of the comparat~ve thought processes between the Americans and the Japanese became evident during a conversation with the president of an international hotel management company based in North America. He said that most American hotel owners want a return on. their investment in three to five years, whereas the Japanese look for a return in 20 to 30 years.

Fortunately, the quick buck mentality is starting to fade, ¡but people need to guard against its return, as it is a certain death trap.

There are drawbacks ...

What is a business plan?

A business plan is a specific and detailed plan which lists all the steps necessary to bring about the creation, recovery or cessation of a business.

It involves determining one's business goals, both long- and short-term, and writing them and the steps necessary to achieve them.

A professional considering starting a business must look beyond the fmancial aspect, and consider everything that might have an impact on his success or failure.

A good business plan should be flexible if it is to work. Situations often arise, which will cause the business to fail if a person is too rigid in his or her thinking and planning.

Tennis professionals considering going into the business of running a tennis facility must develop a good infrastructure. The pillars of this infrastructure include flexibility, creativity, emergency planning, skill development and service to the customer

There are several key points and questions a professional must consider before beginning a business.

A professional should look at the big picture,

the game of tennis. Where does one see it in the year 2025 (or beyond)? A professional should try to see it as he hopes it would be, and keep in mind that if the business plans and implementation are sound, he will direct part of the game of tennis.

Many tennis professionals did not go any further in their education than learning how to teach tennis, and more than teaching knowledge is needed to run a business. Professionals should study successful businesses and speak to the owners to see how they did it. In studying_ successful businesses, professionals should transfer that element of success back into tennis. Also, they should look at businesses that have failed in order to learn what not to do. The professional should ask many questions of successful people,

especially those who have been successful in the field of interest.

There are many components of a business plan which must be examined before beginning the business, including finances, competition, marketing plan, legalities and emotional readiness .

Finances A professional should look at the physical assets she has to work with - finances, num-

ber of courts, pro shop, current membership and potential membership. Are they adequate for now? What should they be as one progresses with the plan? Are the plans for the future feasible?

Financially, a professional must be realistic about what she can borrow and pay back. A person should keep 10 percent to 25 percent of her income in savings or emergency funds.

When first planning, the professional should consider the cost from the bottom. For example, a tennis professional is planning to run a tennis clinic for up to 32 participants, and eight professionals are required to run it successfully She

should figure the cost of running it with two, four, six or eight professionals based on fewer participants, so that she can hire additional professionals as the number of participants increases. It would be a poor business decision to hire the full number of professionals at the beginning, without knowing how many people will attend. It is important to have a contingency on which to build.

If a professional is planning to open a pro shop, he first must understand the function of the pro shop, which is to provide an integral service to the tennis facility The goal of the professional must be to at least break even. Very few pro shops make money, and the majority are losing money It is important to think ahead. Setting goals is good, but one must plan for emergencies or less-than-ideal situations. A professional should visualize a worst case scenario and build from there, planning what to do to recover The professional also should plan his strategy if his facility is doing only half the business that was expected.

Competition Servicing customers is the best way a professional can beat the competition. Competition is good, even though many professionals feel threatened by it.

If a pro shop is competing against a megastore or discount store, the professional must offer something the big stores cannot. A pro shop â&#x20AC;˘ ¡ sells more than equipment. It sells a service and a specialized knowledge of the sport. For example, a pro shop can offer good stringing with quality service.

Successful pro shops offer unique products, which cannot be found in discount stores, such as tennis-ball key chains and special T-shirts. A professional might consider selling tennis videos or books. Creativity is a necessity

Marketing plan Before beginning any program, the professional should ask what the clientele wants from it cost, number of people involved and type of activity A professional considering running a club should plan tennis programs with pizazz. For example, Peter Burwash International created Turbo Tennis, an activity which uses a ball machine, loud and lively music and pmctical drills. It is a very popular activity and is sold out every night.

It is important for the professional to develop

marketing ideas which will defeat the hurdles that people offer as excuses to not play tennis . For example, if someone will not play because he has a bad knee, the professional should tell him about wheelchair tennis. If a woman says she is too old to play, the professional should tell her about senior tennis activities the facility offers.

If there are complaints about lessons which cost $48 per hour, the professional can offer group lessons for eight people at $6 an hour. The professional makes the same amount of money, and the students have the opportunity to learn tennis from a professional with seven other people of a similar skill level.

Legalities There are many legal issues which must be considered before beginning the business, such as city fees, tax codes, building codes, zoning laws, hiring laws, insurance and employee benefits.

These will vary from city to city, state to state, and year to year The best way to get the information is to research. A professional may call other people in a similar business, go to a library, or call the local or state tax office. Once the basic information is discovered, the professional should consult a lawyer to work out the details.

With success comes jealousy and envy from all angles. One must be ready for it. It is this final stage that is the reason so few people truly get to the top in their field. They see how alone No. 1 is, and so many people feel comfortable with mediocrity

If the professional has a family, it is important to have their support. Starting and running a business is time-consuming and stressful, and family support is necessary for reassurance, comfort and advice.

Bacso inducted into US PTA Hall of Fame Known worldwide, George Bacso is a legend among tennis-teaching professionals, and at the USPTA National Convention in September, he was inducted into the USPTA Hall of Fame.

'George has been nstrumental n the development of many USPTA programs, from the Certification ExamsM to USPTA Little TennisTM' Bacso said Tim Heckler, USPTA CEO. He has done everything there is to do in tennis and won every US PTA award. He truly is the type of person the Hall of Fame represents.

Bacso was instrumental in developing and implementing the USPTA Certification Exam on a national level. National testing began in 1970, but prior to this, divisions use.d different tests to certify members at the divisional or regional levels.

Bacso also developed the Master Professional category USPTA's highest certification rating. It was initiated in 1984 to give tennis-teaching professionals the opportunity to become more involved in the Association and attain a new level of certification .

US PTA Little Tennisâ&#x201E;˘

The USPTA Little Tennis'M program can be enhanced by using equipment designed specifically to develop the striking and coordination skills of young children .

Wilson Racquet Sports has produced the new Wilson Tennis Carnival equipment, a collection of unique teaching aids, which allow young children to participate in tennis-related striking skill games and activities. Stations which help develop specific skills may be used individually or positioned together to transform a tennis court into a tennis carnival.

Teaching Tower This tool may be used to teach groundstrokes, overheads or serving motions, depending on the length of the cable. The cords are adjustable for student height , and the overhanging extension of the tower can be locked into place. The tower comes with interchangeable cords for groundstrokes or overheads. One cord has a permanent ball, and the other has an attachment for a ball that releases on impact.

Teaching Cables Students can practice hitting balls across the court with this teaching aid. Weather-resistant cords are attached to court fences and hung parallel to the court. • Q. At what age should I start my child in tennis?

A.

The answer is an extremely individual one, and depends on the child's maturity and basic motor skill development. You must determine if the child has reached a level of maturity that allows him or her to do the following : • Listen and follow directions.

• Share and take turns.

• Attend to a task for a few minutes.

• Enjoy playing with others.

Questions such as this are frequently asked of Rick Vetter, owner and director of tennis of the Mequon Racquet Club in Mequon, Wise. Vetter works with children' daily, and has been in business for 17 years .

As teaching professionals and as parents, it is important to understand the stages of skill acquisition , so that what the child is asked to do is age appropriate. Based on information from Gessell's The First Five Years of Life and The Child from 5-10 Years Old and his own coaching experience, Vetter and his staff developed guidelines for planning their activities. Children should be able to do the following skills: • 4-year-olds run smoothly· stand on one foot for a very limited time; catch a bounced ball hop four to six steps on one foot; throw a ball underhanded four feet; catch a large ball.

• 5-year-olds have a more mature sense of balance ; keep their heads steady when walking ; skip, hop and jump smoothly· balance on one foot for four to eight seconds; hop 16 feet; run directly to a target 20 feet away· throw a ball forward 18 feet; bat a balloon aloft for 30 seconds; throw a bean bag into a basket.

• 6-year-olds stand on one foot with eyes closed ; show mature throwing skills; walk 2-inch balance beam ; coordinate several motor skills in an activity· slide in either direction; catch a small ball ; are very active, but sometimes clumsy because they try to overdo or go too fast.

•

• 7- to 8-year-olds are spontaneous; receptive to learning ; show an increase in speed and smoothness of eye-hand coordination .

• 9-year-olds have developed individual eye-hand skills, good or bad ; show interest in competitive sports; imitate role models.

Demo racquet program brings products to the players

After purchasing at least six specially priced demo racquets, the professional will receive a free demo racquet display. The display, which holds up to eight racquets, can be taken out on the court, hooked onto a teaching basket or fence, or set on the ground. Many people who take tennis lessons do not know much about racquets, Dillman said.

To help address this problem, the demo racquet display also features information to help players determine their swing speed and stroke style. Teaching professionals can then lend their expertise in advising players on the types of racquets that are best for the players' style of play.

Professionals who are interested in the program, but do not have a Wilson pro shop account may contact their local Wilson sales representative for information on accounts near them . These professionals then have

Pro shop school offers business skills Running a pro shop takes more than the right stuff it takes the right staff attitude, marketing skills and more.

USPTA members can learn the specifics of running a pro shop at the two-day USPTA School of Pro Shop Management, to be held in conjunction with The Super Show/95 in Atlanta. Attendees also will earn eight credits toward USPTA's Continuing Education Program requirements.

The cou rse will be offered 8 a.m.-5 p.m Feb. 1-2. Klaus Hilgers and Paul MacDonald will present both portions of the course Pro Shop Management on Wednesday, and How to be a Better Head Professional or Tennis Director on Thursday.

People interested in attending must contact the USPTA Membership Department, (713) 97-USPTA, by Jan. 13. The course fee is $150 for USPTA members and $225 for nonmembers ..

Attendees will learn what tools are needed' to operate a pro shop profitably, as well as

how to strengthen their own and their staffs' organizational and marketing skills. Within his first year of playing tennis, Lopez was ranked No. 1 In 1973, his first year out of high school , he qualified for the California Interscholastic Federation singles championships. Lopez earned an academic scholarship to the University of California in San Diego. Soon he was playing No. 1 in singles and doubles.

The next year, he was red-shirted on the tennis team at San Diego City Junior College,

which finished No. 2 in the state in 1976. He then accepted a full tennis scholarship to the University of Arizona. In 1978, Lopez was No. 1 in singles and doubles in the conference tournament, and competed as a professional on the USTA Missouri Valley circuit.

constantly strives to learn more to improve himself If anyone is interested in becoming the best tennis-teaching professional he or she can be, Uoining) the USPTA is the best way to go about it, he said. 'Following the Master Professional guidelines was the best thing I ever did. It guarantees you to be a well-rounded pro.

Lopez thinks all beginning tennis-teaching professionals should become USPTA certified, follow the continuing education guidelines, and get involved in divisional activities and community associations. He also thinks a new professional should have a mentor. Lopez said all of the people who influenced him as a player were USPTA professionals.

'As tennis teachers, I feel we should not only share our knowledge of the game, but share our love of the game, as well , he said .

'Our passion for tennis is addictive: Lopez, a member of the national USPTA Multicultural Committee, thinks USPTA could encourage more minorities to join the Association if scholarships were available for people who coach in recreational centers. It is an economic issue, rather than a racial one, that keeps minorities from joining , he said.

Young Hispanic and black players need Hispanic and black instructors as role models who wiil understand the students' lifestyles, he said. It's hard for Caucasians to understand that need, Lopez said .

1994 has been an exciting year for Lopez.

He coached a World TeamTennis team for the first time, and was honored as the World TeamTennis Coach of the Year. Newport Beach was the first franchise in WTI history to go undefeated in the regular season .

Also this year, Lopez was featured in the 100 Role Models photographic exhibit of the Mexican Heritage Foundation in San Diego.

This traveling exhibit will be displayed throughout the San Diego community for one year, through September 1995. It was designed to inspire Hispanic children and provide them with greater self-esteem and pride in their heritage. ~

US 1\'s Ed Semes was guiding light in tennis-teaching profession ~e

senior division of this year's National Championships just wasn't the same. The difference Ed Serues' name didn't appear on the draw sheets that were posted in La Quinta, Calif The resident of Naples, Fla. passed away Aug . 8 at the age of 77 The 43-year member of USPTA became a familiar name in the championship circle, after winning the 1984 men's 65 singles division of the National Championships. Known Serues for his determination, will to win and his stamina on the tennis court, he continued to add his name to the USPTA record books.

After winning his first USPTA championship in 1984, he went on to win the men's 65 singles division in 1985 and 1986.

Other singles titles include the men's 70-75 singles championship in 1989, 1990 (with co-winner Bob Stubbs), 1991 and 1993 (in 75 division) .

Serues' National Championships doubles titles include the 1985 men's 60 division, the 1986 and ¡1988 men's 65 division, and the 1989 and 1991 men's 70 division .

USPTA honored Serues in 1989 as the cowinner of the Player of the Year award in the men's 45 and over category. He was ranked No. 1 in the men's 75 division in 1993, and was part of the No. 1-ranked doubles team (with John Huber) in the men's 75 division the same year. He and partner Frank Kenney were ranked No. 2 in the men's 70 division in 1993.

His love of the game kept him on the tennis court, even after a heart attack in August of 1993. One month later, he won the men's 75 singles title of the USPTA National Championsh ips in Boca Raton , Fla. Although his reputation as a competitor was well known to those with whom he played tennis, he did his most valuable service to his profession quietly and unannounced, according to Don Henson, USPTA, of Coronado, Calif Serues, a Master Professional, served both on the New England Division and national board of directors. He was secretary on the

national board of directors from 1973 to 1976; and served as secretary, first vice president and president of the New England Division .

He was politically active. at both divisional and national levels for at least 30 years.

Before moving to Florida, Serues coached the boys tennis team at Amherst College, where he was a physical education professor for 30 years. He continued to work with young tennis players after he moved to Naples, where he coached the boys tennis team at Naples High School.

As a USPTA member, Serues was a 'father figure' to many young professionals, said Henson. He was a guiding light to many people, and that had a great impact on them he said.

Ed always had good stories to tell and brought a sense of dedication to our profession , said Ed Torroni a USPTA member from Naples. 'We will miss Kim dearly.' o

Dear USPTA, Having been on vacation for over a month and out of touch, I just learned today of Ed Serues' death.

Our relationship goes back to the '50s when Ed was in Boston. While working for a degree at Boston University, Ed became my coach and produced a highly successful team.

As a player, coach, gentleman and family man, Ed had a profound influence on me. I only wish that I might have grown to be more like him.

His accomplishments in tennis are well-known, but it is his morals, ethics, patience, knowledge and grace that truly set him apart. He is simply the finest professional/ have ever known. I miss knowing he is not in reach, but I celebrate his life.

Shoulder rotation, knuckles forward will cure 'wristy' problem QUESTION: I have a player who seems very "wristy" on the backhand side, both on the one-handed groundstroke and the backhand volley. In your consulting with players, have you run across this? What causes it and how cal) I correct it?

ANSWER: recently worked with a collegiate player who competes for a top American university. Although he is a good player who can hit with anyone, even a top professional player, he tended to lose control of his onehanded backhand and backhand volley under pressure. When my staff and studied a slow-motion analysis of these two strokes, we found some interesting things. To the naked eye, both strokes looked all right, but upon slow-motion review, some major problems were revealed .

On the backhand groundstroke, the player had excellent preparation. He exhibited a great shoulder turn with very little arm moveJack Groppel, Ph.D. , is the executive vice president of LGE/Saddlebrook Sport Science Inc. He is an instruction editor for Tennis magazine, and is the author of High-Tech Tennis and co-author of The Science of Coaching Tennis. Groppel is a certified USPTA Master Professional and was named 1987 USPTA Professional Groppel of the Year.

Groppel is an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Florida. He is chairman of the USPTA National Committee on Fitness and Health, and a member of the National Youth Tennis Development Steering Committee. He also is a member of the Prince and Penn advisory staffs.

ment. If there was any concern at this point, it was only that he tended to take the racquet back a little too high for a topspin backhand.

This could be corrected with minor adjustments.

We weren't sure if the next thing we saw could be corrected as easily. He began his forward swing with slight hip and shoulder turn, but then pulled his arm straight forward toward the net instead of letting his arm follow an arc pivoting about the shoulder. This forced him to lag his hand as he approached the contact point. His elbow was flexed slightly, but the real concern was that he had to 'flick' his wrist, elbow and shoulder to get the racquet around to impact the ball.

He was skilled enough to hit the ball with control and consistency if there was no competitive pressure; but in a pressure-filled match, there was not enough time to hit effective shots.

Our cure for him was to get all four knuckles on his right hand (he is a righthanded player) around toward ball contact well before impact. Previous to this, these four knuckles got into position at the last

instant, making control difficult. Although there probably were other cues that would work with this player, this cue was quite effective.

For the volley, he wasn't preparing with enough shoulder turn. In addition , his right arm (or racquet arm) would go forward as his shoulders turned slightly. The combination of these two movements (or lack of movement) left nothing to develop force for the volley. The only way he could generate adequate force was to 'flick' his wrist at the last instant, which causes poor control and consistency. â&#x20AC;˘ Our work with him was to develop an adequate shoulder turn to prepare the stroke.

We did not want to see too much arm movement, except to allow a slight elbow bend .

As he moved forward into the volley, we wanted to see a slight shoulder rotation toward the ball, and then an immediate elbow extension. If the wrist stays firm and 'quiet' (no wrist flick), the stroke becomes much more controlled.

In summary, the more wrist action that occurs in any stroke beyond what may be acceptable, the greater the chance for errors.

Whatever cues you choose to use for your player, be sure they correct the wristy shot while not hampering the fundamental mechanics. Because wrist action is usually very fast, slow-motion video replay usually is required to evaluate the student's progress. o

Put Pro Peoo balls in the customers' hands ~en

it comes to tennis balls, players tend to buy the brand that is handed to them .

That's how the Phoenix Country Club pro shop began selling only Pro Penn tennis balls after exclusively selling another brand one year before.

'We get the lion's share of the customers to buy Pro Penn by simply putting it on the counter,' said USPTA member Jack Michalko, the club's director of tennis.

When he first decided to sell only Pro Penn balls, 80 percent of the customers took the can without asking any questions, he said . The remaining customers asked for another brand, which they were given.

When asked why they. requested the other brand, customers usually responded that it was the only ball they had ever used.

After the staff member explained the benefits of using a Pro Penn ball, most of those customers agreed to try it, and became loyal Pro Penn users.

Those who refused to buy Pro Penn were given a free can to try, usually left over from a tournament. After using it, they, too, began to use Pro Penn.

By automatically putting Pro Penn in the hands of the customers, we raise the awareness of the product and gradually increase the volume sold ," Michalko said. 'We work hard to keep them aware of Pro Penn by displaying banners and coolers.

Internal Revenue Service ruled in August that dues paid to trade associations, such as USPTA, will remain a deductible business expense, as reported in Association Trends, the nevvspaper for association executives and suppliers.

Other organizations with tax-deductible dues or membership fees are local chambers of commerce, business leagues, boards of trade, real estate boards, professional organizations and civic or public service organizations.

However, dues for clubs that organize for business, pleasure, recreation or other social purposes may not be deducted as business expenses. Under the new regulations, dues for country clubs, golf and athletic clubs, hotel clubs, airline clubs and other clubs operated to provide meals no longer will be tax-deductible. o

Former touring players Bob Howell and Marty Reissen gave a presentation on competitive doubles, and Jim Courier hit tennis balls with 20 children and played some exhibition points.

The USPTA/RCA Ladies and Seniors Day had more than 170 participants. USPTA Midwest Division professionals who helped were Sai les, Dan Hopkins, Mike O'Connell, Bob Velasco, Ernesto Castanares, Annette Riley, AI Wermer, Jack Etchison, Jim Amick, Paul Gill, Joan Krease Bunte, Jim Bray, Dan Moster, Kevin Doyle, Bill Reed, John Condreay and Dean Snyder.

• Mary Seiferd, USPTA member and tennis professional for Hidden Palms Racquet Club in Brandon, Fla. is the tournament director for the annual Humane Society of Tampa Bay Benefit Tennis Tournament. Th is year, proceeds in the amount of $10,129 helped fund the daily operations and develop education programs atl the local animal shelter. Seiferd has been tournament director for si x years.

• Mark Bearby, former national sales manager for Head Racquet Sports, founded Bearby and Associates, a new sales agency in Chicago. The USPTA member joins his wife, Lori Bearby, in selling Descente golf apparel for men, Bolle eyewear, Tail golf and tennis apparel for women, and a high-end custom awards product group from Field and Associates.

• The North Carolina Coaches Association held its annual tennis coaches clinic at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

USPTA member Paul Lubbers, the university's head tennis coach , hosted the event.

More than 75 high school coaches attended.

• Bob Litwin of Port Washington, NY and Larry Turville of Houston teamed up for the first time and defeated Armisted Neely of Atlanta and Brian Marcus of Duluth , Ga. in an aii-USPTA final at the Atlanta Senior Invitational in 45 doubles.

• The new director of tennis activities and men's and women's head tennis coach for Old Dominion University, Norfolk: Va. is USPTA member Darryl Cummings. He was the women's head tennis coach for the past two seasons. Cummings was named Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year in women's tennis last spring after leading the Lady Monarchs to their best record in the school 's history, 18-6.

• USPTA member John Joyce is the new director of tennis for Boca We st Count ry Club Inc. in Boca Raton , Fla. Joyce supervises five tennis professionals and a nine-member tennis staff Joyce was the director of tennis for Joyce ndian Spring Country Club in Boynton Beach Fla. New Canaan (Conn .) Field Club, and The Shore and Country Club in Norwalk, Conn.

• Len Simard and Mike Puc, both USPTA members, captured the doubles title in the Canadian National 35s Championships in Montreal. Simard is the director of tennis at the Boca Lago Country Club in Boca Raton , Fla. and USPTA Florida Division vice president. Puc works at tbe Timu-

quana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. Simard finished third in singles competition and is a candidate for the 1995 Canadian National Team.

• USPTA member Raymond A. Yost, owner and operator of Westwood Racquet Club, Erie, Pa. is the new men's and women 's head tennis Yost coach at Mercyhurst College in Erie. Yost is ending his second term as president of the USTA Allegheny Mountain District.

• USPTA professional Rob Cornell has joined the tennis coach ng staff at Flinders Park National Cornell Tennis Centre in Aus. tralia. He also coaches wheelchair tennis and works with Daniella de Toro, the No. 5 female wheelchair player in the world .

USTA • The USTA conducted for the first time random drug testing on junior tennis players at two of the five sites of the USTA National Junior Championships. The drug testing follows two years of drug education as required by the USTA Standing Orders adopted in September 1991 • The USTA and Florida Tennis Association developed a college hotline pilot program in which state-ranked junior tennis players in Florida who are interested in playing college tennis call a toll-free number. A database of players who are high school seniors will be compiled, and the information will be available to college coaches. Manufacturers • nvestigators hired by Wilson Racquet Sports led a successful raid against LewisSonic Manufacturing Co. Ltd. in Xiamen, China, permanently shutting down its counterfeit operation of Wilson tennis racquets, a press release stated. Approximately 8,000 racquets were confiscated during the raid , as well as racquet parts, decals, silk screens and racquet covers.

Wilson has introduced its newest traditional performance racquet, the Pro Staff Lite Classic 7.0si, to the U.S. market. This racquet is designed for players with long, loopy

strokes and fast swings who are seeking more control in their games. The racquet is made of 70 percent graphite and 30 percent fiberglass, and comes with a Cushion-Aire® Grip.

• lntellimedia Sports has introduced a new interactive software program , ESPN Let's Play Tennis, which incorporates sound , graphics, text, animation and fullmotion video on CD-ROM to provide tennis instruction by Tracy Austin , Cliff Drysdale and Fred Stolle. Users may build a customi zed lesson plan in which they select particular modules on which they wish to work.

• GRT Inc. has developed the FootMaxxer, a pressure-sensitive footpad designed to measure and improve a tennis player's foot quickness. To activate the FootMaxxer, the user steps on the center pad , waits for the start signal , and steps up and down on the two outside pads as quickly as possible for 10 seconds. Associations • The Hilton Head Island Tennis JSrofessionals Association raised almost $5,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the 1994 spring and summer seasons.

HHITPA President Eric Wammock, a USPTA professional, planned a HHITPA pro league for the fall season which solicited sponsors and members to donate more toward the defeat of muscular dystrophy.

• Effective Oct. 1 IRSA, The Association of Quality Clubs became the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA). The new name was chosen to be more descriptive of the composition and purpose of the association , a press release stated.

Miscellany • The Randy Snow Tennis Camp, held before the Japan Open this year, involved students from Cambodia, China, ndia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau , Thailand and Vietnam . • The Landings Club, Savannah , Ga. received the 1994 Center Court of the Year award sponsored by Tennis magazine. The Landings Club has 32 Fast-Dry and two hard courts in three separate facilities, two tennis pro shops, and a permanent-seat center stadium court which seats 400 people.

• Wilson Racquet Sports' Kris McTavish, sales and promotion representative, married Stephen Johnson, director of sport science for the U.S. Ski Team and director of sports medicine for the University of Utah . McTavish served as president of the Colorado Tennis Association for three years and vice president of the Intermountain Tennis Association.

• The Thermal & Golf Resort Bad Tatzmannsdorf in Austria and the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy signed a management agreement for the resort's tennis center. NBTA will manage the day-today operations of the tennis center and provide the marketing , programming and promotional expertise for the tennis operation at the resort.

Passings • Paul Babolat, 79, former chairman of the Babolat company, died recently. He was born in Lyon, France, and was the grandson of the first chairman of Babolat.

Babolat defended his country in World War II during which he was taken prisoner. He received the Croix de Guerre (cross of war) from the French government.

After taking charge of the company's sales, he organized the export department and developed the products that are part of the company today. Babolat is survived by his wife, daughters and son , Pierre, who has assumed his position as chairman of the board.

Evaluation can improve teaching skills

A s coaches know from working with athletes, improvement in any particular area comes from being made aware of a weakness and working to improve it. Despite this knowledge, coaches rarely are evaluated in any organized and systematic manner as a means of developing their abilities. It's even more rare for coaches to receive feedback from those who are the recipients of the coaches' skills namely, the players.

A common practice that occurs within the field of higher education is the evaluation of teachers by students. This information is used as constructive feedback for the future development of instructors and in hiring and promotion decisions. This same process could benefit the coaching profession and the sport of tennis.

Students could assess coaching performance in a variety of areas on a five-point scale: poor, below average, average, good and excellent. Along with each numerical rating , a section for comments would enable players to provide specific feedback to the coaches.

• Coaching knowledge - The depth and breadth of knowledge the coach possesses in the areas of technique, physical and mental training, and equipment.

• Manner and explanation - T'he ability of the coach to convey clearly relevant information to players.

• Enthusiasm and stimulation - The amount of energy and love for the sport the coach brings to his or her coaching responsibilities.

• Attitude toward the athletes - The manner in which the coach treats the players in terms of respect, concern and discipline.

• The coach - How the player views the coach in general.

n addition to these assessments by the players, other important areas of coaching performance could be evaluated by the program director and head coach. Of particular note are the coach's off-court responsibi ities, nclud ng organizational and administrative capabilities, interpersonal skills

with other staff members, parents and individuals in the tennis industry, and interpersonal attributes such as initiative and time management skills. n taking this approach, it is important for the coaches to view this process positively and constructively rather than as threatening.

In fact, using such a systematic evaluation approach would benefit coaches by removing potential arbitrariness and subjectivity from the decision-making process in hiring, pay raises and promotions. On a more personal level, it would enable coaches to obtain clear information which they could use to improve their coaching. o Jim Taylor, Ph.D., is a USPTA-certified teaching professional, a regular speaker for the USTA and USPTA, and works with many junior, collegiate and professional players.
