oming6 out of our Executive Committee meeting in April, I knew that my most important goal for members of USPTA had been expressed, clarified and crystallized by all of us during our discussions.

Making the USPTA less of a "phantom" to you, the member.

And conversely, reducing the number of phantom members.

What is a phantom? Definitions abound. Something apparently seen but having no physical reality; ghost; specter.

An image that appears only in the mind. Unreal, ghostlike.

Are you a phantom USPTA member? If you are, we must do Kathy something about it. It's a twoway street and the less phantomlike USPTA is, the more likely youll be to respond to your organization. We know that.

Even if you're not physically present at many or any of USPTA's educational courses or divisional conventions, USPTA must be alive for you. It must mean something. And that's what we're striving for. We know we've got members with a wide variety of interests, skills, needs and goals. And we're aware that we exist in an industry of tennis entities with overlapping and divergent goals. Our goal is to stay focused for you, the member for your career.

We've been pursuing that goal of "dephantomizmg" the USPTA m many different ways. For one, all of your national board members have traveled many miles this year to develop relationships and create new ones with all of our allied associations. We've been present at the USTA semi-annual, annual and key committee meetings. Our membership booths have been displayed at every major industry forum. We spoke at and officially represented USPTA at CMAA and IHRSA

conventions. We met with our endorsees at The Super Show, and attended TIA forums and special PR and media training sessions for industry leaders. We're developing a pilot program for a mutually beneficial relationship with the WTA Tour after meeting with their new leaders. We spoke to ATP Tour members at their professional's course and are strengthening our ties to assist in the transition from touring professional to the teaching and tennis business. We've been networkingo with Grand Slam Sports and the Legend Pros all of whom are USPTA members.

And the list goes on and on.

Woods We are not a phantom in the industry. But we must travel and communicate in order to improve our relationships.

The same is true within our organization.

Our education plan is expanding all the time. We want to tie members' experience in the industry with satisfaction of specific criteria for their professional ratings. Open up career pathways with guidance for future mastery with Specialty Courses that match. All of this is ongoing.

If club owners and managers understand our members' competencies based on their certification ratings, we will have achieved a lot.

We had a consensus during our April meeting that if we had to choose one key market to educate on understanding the USPTA and blitz with information, it would be this group our employers. You will see a stronger message to this group. The public is important and so is the industry at large — but none has the impact of the person who hires us and gives us a professional life.

Our USPTA-sponsored programs and endorsements keep us moving forward. When we designed USPTA Little Tennis™ and endorsed see Phantom, page 32

Dear USPTA, First, let me commend Kathy Woods' inaugural President's message calling for professionals' action to "grow the game" of tennis.

As USPTA-certified teaching professionals, we must all come together and be proactive, aggressively recruiting new beginning adult and junior players to take up the sport of a lifetime, to discover new fun, fitness and friends. The industry's eyes are upon us - the TIA, the ATP Tour, the WTA, the USTA, and even the USPTR â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to significantly increase player participation â&#x20AC;&#x201D; not yesterday or tomorrow, but

now! For a solution to the problem, look for specific "how to" tips on increasing player numbers in upcoming ADDvantage articles and at future convention presentations.

Second, in response to President Woods' second message, "Should We Tinker With the Game?" I say absolutely and emphatically, yes! We must look at alternative playing and scoring formats that make tennis more fun and social rather than always so intensely competitive. Due to consumers' time pressures and society's constraints, adult recreational league matches should be

Junior recreational players should play a maximum eight-game pro set with a I2-pomt tiebreak at eight games all. Establish junior league play for 8-year-olds and under with 6 years being the minimum age level (play all doubles, nine game total matches) For the spectators' sake, make all pro tour matches (men's and women's) best two of three sets except for three of five grand slam finals. The USTA must make their leagues more user-friendly

with an easier entry level.

Alternative formats, such as mixed, mixed up or combo doubles which do not require entry-level verification or allow player disqualification, must be promoted and instituted nationally. (Take a look at Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association's success story and copy it!) Finally, let's implement a tennis handicap rating system which will kindle new and exciting ways to approach individual singles or doubles match play.

Wanted: Teaching professionals Teaching pros critical to TIA, industry success

ver the last few months, I am sure you have heard a lot about the Tennis Industry Association's Initiative to increase player participation. New and former players in 25 targeted cities throughout the United States are being introduced to tennis through an initial "Super Lesson" and the Play Tennis America program.

Through this program, the TIA hopes to expand the ranks of tennis participants by generating half a million new players over the next three years.

It is important that we encourage tennis-teaching professionals to participate in this all out effort. In fact, as a means of increasing teaching professional involvement, the TIA and its member organizations decided to pay teachers $2.50 per pupil to encourage both their support and participation.

Although this was a very appreciated and sincere gesture, the USPTA Executive Committee recently debated this issue at length when it gathered in Houston for one of its two semiannual meetings.

Since the average price of a normal group lesson is approximately $ 15 per person, per hour, the committee reasoned that the $2.50 per student paid by TIA would not encourage those pros who had not already planned to participate to do so.

Instead, the Executive Committee

overwhelmingly agreed to recommend that USPTA professionals offer their services free of charge to the TIA Initiative. The national and local recognition received by teaching pros for their free involvement in a critical industry program will far exceed the benefits of a $2.50 payment per pupil.

It's also important for everyone to know that the contributions by teaching professionals will represent the largest overall donation to the initiative. For example, if TIA meets its Heckler marketing objective of giving free lessons to half a million people, at normal market rates, the teaching professional contribution will amount to more than $75 million in lessons. Even if USPTA professionals were paid $2.50 per person for the free lessons, their donation to the TIA effort would still be the largest in the industry at $6.25 million.

important for everyone to know the contributions by teaching professionals will represent the largest overall donation to the initiative

As you can see, the tennis industry needs us to make this project a success.

It's also the ideal program to highlight the efforts of teaching professionals on behalf of the industry. If we succeed in this task, we will eradicate forever the senseless question, "What are teaching professionals doing for the game of tennis?"

Celebrate end of season with tennis Olympics

A

good way to end a season of tennis lessons for young juniors is to hold a USPTA Little Tennis™ Olympics event. This involves developing various stations on the tennis court which give the children an opportunity to test the skills they have learned.

Rick Vetter, owner and director of tennis at the Mequon (Wis.) Racquet Club, developed a tennis olympics program for his junior students based on Kirk Anderson's Tennis Olympics program.

Before beginning olympic activities, the instructor divides the children into teams and appoints a team captain, usually a teaching professional, assistant or parent. Each team is given a fun and creative team name with which the children can identify.

Vetter, a USPTA Master Professional, designed seven events for the olympics. A professional can take advantage of limited court space by using mr. peeWee tennis court kits.

Relays Don't drop the egg — A stack of balls is placed in front of the net. One player from each team runs to the net with a racquet and returns to the line, balancing the ball on the racquet strings. If the ball falls off, the player must return to the stack and try again with another ball. When he returns to the line, the next child takes a turn.

Basketball dribbles — Starting at the team line, each student runs down the court, around a cone, and back to the line, dribbling a tennis ball with the racquet. Each student goes one at a time.

Bump it up — The first player runs around a cone, bouncing a ball into the air with the racquet. When the child returns to the team line, he passes the ball to the next player and sits down.

Hot Potato Circle Catch This event tests children's catching and tossing skills.

Team members stand in a circle and toss the ball underhanded to another player across the circle. The score is

kept by counting consecutive catches. The children should have one minute to practice and two minutes to keep score.

Sandwich race This event develops teamwork. The instructor places a tennis ball on his tennis racquet and the first team member places her racquet on top of the ball. The other team members add to the stack with more balls and racquets.

The team then runs around a cone and back to the line, keeping the "sandwich" held together.

Total volleys The professional feeds the balls to the students, who start at the baseline. The students then run to the net, split step, and hit the volley. They hit forehand volleys for three minutes and backhand volleys for three minutes.

Total groundstrokes Again, the instructor tosses balls to the children, who stand at the baseline. They hit forehand and backhand groundstrokes for three minutes each.

Total serves Team players take turns serving in a three-minute time period.

Team cheer At this station, each team creates a cheer which is judged by the parents. Teams often tie in this event.

The winning team for each event is given a number of points. In the relay races, the team that finishes first is the winner. In the other events, the teams with the most catches or successful hits is the winner.

The gold medal winners (first place) receive 5 points, silver medal (second place) gets 4 points, bronze medal earns 3 points, and the other teams have 2 points each. It is important that every child be given a prize or treat. At the end of the olympics, the team with the most points is the grand prize winner.

he No. 1 seeded players won the men's and women's singles divisions during the $15,000 USPTA National Clay Court Championships in May. Scott Stewart of Martinez, Ga., defeated No. 2 seed Eric Styrmoe of Tucson, Ariz., 7-5, 6-2 in the men's open division. In the women's open division, Tory Plunkett of Arlington, Texas, defeated Margaret Lovick-Spmks of Bay St. Louis, Miss., 6-0, 3-0 (ret.)

Other division winners are: Pat Serret, Alexandria, La., and Styrmoe, men's open doubles; Serret, men's 35 and over singles, Doug Boswell, Tulsa, Okla., and Sal Castillo, San Antonio, men's 3 5 and

over doubles; and Plunkett and Glenn Barton, San Antonio, open mixed doubles.

"This inaugural tournament offered our teaching professionals a great opportunity to compete at one of the nation's premier country clubs," said Tim Heckler, USPTA CEO. "We look forward to providing further playing events, such as this tournament, for USPTA members."

The tournament, presented by Wilson Racquet Sports, was held on the red clay courts at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston.

inning a tough tennis match is akin to surviving a battle. A teaching professional's job is to maximize the player's chance of survival. One way of accomplishing this task is to triage player weaknesses. The legendary sitcom "MASH," with its comedic portrayals of a wartime medical unit, popularized the concept of triage as a system for maximizing survival.

The triage concept is simple. In the heat of battle, when casualties are frequent, one must sort through those casualties and provide treatment for the most pressing, yet treatable, conditions.

Triage involves sorting potential casualties into three types.

First are conditions which are hopeless, for which no amount of treatment will be successful. Second are those conditions which are mild and not life-threatening. And third are those conditions for which treatment is available and critical for survival.

Players have a variety of conditions that adversely affect their performance. Most of these conditions are related to weaknesses in their physi cal, mental or emotional state.

Performance weaknesses in any of these areas can be triaged using the same principals applied to casualties of war. Ignore those weaknesses that realistically cannot be im-

\ the sorting of and allocation of treatment to battle victims according to a system of priorities designed to maximize the number of survivors

through their weaknesses using the following triage system.

• List your player's weaknesses. The list should include a combination of physical, strategic, mental and emotional weaknesses.

• Assign a " 1" to the weaknesses for which there are no immediate or meaningful remedies (the foot speed of an aging player might be a good example) Assign a "2" to minor weaknesses, those least likely to affect match survival (a peculiar preservice motion, for example) Assign a "3" to the weaknesses that should be-

proved, forget about the minor weaknesses that are not critical, and focus on the weaknesses that offer the most promise for match survival.

by fringing weaknesses addressed to ensure a player's survival under match conditions.

Develop a plan for improving the No. 3 weaknesses.

Work on these weaknesses in lessons, and prescribe practice drills that will improve these areas.

Ignore all of the No. 1 and No. 2 weaknesses, or keep them in a file to work on later. Remember, the focus is on survival. Tackle only those weaknesses'that have a good prognosis for improve-

ment. â&#x20AC;˘ The triage steps listed above may be used to isolate the most critical weaknesses of players. Working on these systematically and aggressively will help the player survive on court.

See Figure 1 for an example of a triage for John Fault.

John's teaching professional can now develop a plan to address all the No. 3 triage items. The plan should include lesson activi-

ties and suggestions for practice. They should tackle items with No. 1 and No. 2 triage ratings at a time in John's tennis development when survival is not as critical.

Sorting through weaknesses is an essential component to meeting player needs and giving them the most for their lesson dollar. Triage these weaknesses and reap the rewards of player satisfaction. &

Convention provides educational opportunities

ineteen Specialty Courses are scheduled during the convention, and members who register by Aug. 15 may attend one or more courses for a $40 flat fee. This rate is available only to those who preregister for the Specialty Courses and the convention. Walk-on registration for Specialty Courses will not be accepted.

The deadline to rancel convention or course registration is Aug. 31 Anyone canceling late or failing to cancel will forfeit one-half the convention fee.

Most Specialty Courses have been condensed to four hours to accommodate the convention schedule. Members will receive 2 credits per four-hour course and 4 credits per eight-hour course toward their Continuing Education Program requirements. A partial list of courses is included below.

Members interested in taking the Certification Training Course (CTC) or upgrading their rating must preregister by Aug. 3 I by calling the USPTA Membership Department. The exam and CTC will be offered in portions over a six-day period. The CTC is also offered at a discounted rate of $40. Anyone interested in becoming certified must meet the membership requirements before they are allowed to preregister for the exam. Those interested in membership should have all requirements met by August.

Each division allowed two teams and may substitute as desired.

Substitutes play only on one team. If incomplete draw, divisions may enter more teams, which are placed in a lottery to draw for bye(s).

Senior TeamTennis format: Doubles-only, regular draw, single-elimination.

Divisions designate (for scoring points) two doubles teams in each category: women's 35, women's 45, men's 45, men's 55, men's 65.

Eight-game, pro set match scoring, with tiebreak at seven games all. Team scoring: 2 points for main draw wins. All teams may enter tournament, but only teams chosen by divisions may earn points. Each team must have players from same division.

Rules: USTA, 15-minute default, senior event players allowed minimum 30-minute rest between matches.

Healthy snacks, laughter help overcome afternoon doldrums Question: As a teaching professional, I often find myself going into a midafternoon mental trough. My concentration is low and sometimes I'm even fatigued to the point of being sleepy. I have heard this from other business people as well. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer- This is somethingo we all go through. Research studies have shown that in time isolation, we establish a 2 5-hour sleep/awake cycle.

One-third of the time we will sleep, but not all at once. We will sleep for about seven hours in one time period and then, at a time corresponding to what would be between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., we would sleep for another hour. So, regardless of one's lifestyle, there is a naturally occurring midafternoon trough in humans' physiological rhythm.

Before I go into certain strategies, let's discuss the issues of sleep for the tennisteaching professional who is trying to balance the compression of time between the court and family.

Research shows us these facts about sleep habits: • The younger a person is, the greater the length of sleep required.

• As people get older, the sleep cycle becomes more fragile.

• Delta sleep (the restorative part of the sleep cycle) decreases with age.

• Delta sleep is high in those who remain active.

• Lean body mass is positively correlated with Delta sleep.

9 Fit subjects sleep less than nonfit subjects, but have more Delta sleep.

The following are some tips on how to handle the midafternoon troughs of tiredness. How individual people respond to them depends on their age, physical condition and activity level, and how well they are sleeping at night.

First, teaching professionals should schedule a variety of activities throughout the midday that allow them to go back and forth from stress and recovery. Constant and unrelenting activity (staying on the court for hours at a time) can cause excessive stress. This overtraining phenomenon has been shown to effect the onset of fatigue.

Fun is a key component in avoiding the 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. "blahs." If you are able to laugh a lot with your students and fellow employees, it will help tremendously.

Eating a healthy snack, such as a banana, will help a person overcome the midafternoon

doldrums.

Finally, eating a light, healthy midafternoon snack (around 3 p.m.) will cause a rise in blood sugar and increase alertness. Eating a bagel, apple or banana will give you approximately 100 to 200 calories to kick-start your engine from a slow idle.

Remember this: The midafternoon trough is o part of our cycle as a biological system, and sleep is the most important recovery mechanism you have.

These are just a few ways to help you out of those doldrums 25

Good sportsmanship important in all tennis activities

I

t is the middle of the second set in a major tournament. You are watching as one of your junior students is clearly and obviously cheated.

Your player comes off the court a loser; emotions run high.

"She hooked me on that point! I can't believe I lost."

How would you handle this situation? How would you instruct your student?

In another scenario, two 10-year-old beginners have just learned to play the game of minitenms. They know how to keep score and the other ba§ic rules of the game, but they have no experience with the code of tennis. If a dispute arises with no one more experienced around to step in and make the decision, how do these youngsters resolve the issue?

Many young players have a do over where the point is replayed. If some sort of confusion exists about who won the point, it is done over again. In most instances, this is an acceptable resolution of the dispute. Why? Because their mam objective is play — fun for both players.

Each coach has a personal philosophy that reflects values he finds important. Many

Sporting event vs. athletic contest One reason that teaching sportsmanship can be difficult and confusing is that two types of tennis situations are governed by two very different sets of expectations and rules.

contests. A sporting event can be roughly classified as recreational tennis. Some of the goals are enjoyment of the activity for all participants, a spirit of generosity, and the avoidance of conflict. In short, the maximization of fun is the mam objective of a sporting event.

An athletic contest, on the other hand, has the following goals, an honorable victory, fair play, equal application of the rules, and a modest victor and composed loser.

Failing to realize the basic differences between sports and athletics, and trying to come up with a single code of behavior that is equally applicable to such diverse activities, is a mistake coaches and teaching professionals sometimes make.

They must prepare their students for the many different situations they will be called upon to face in their careers as tennis players and competitors.

Sportsmanship and beginning tennis players In teaching beginners of any age, the focus should be on the sporting code of conduct. When they are practicing in a group, it is easy to reinforce this concept by having players cooperate to learn new skills and practice the ones they already know.

In competitions within a beginning group, fair play, not winning, should be the focus.

remedied. Younger players must be handled in a sensitive manner when being corrected on a poor line call or when sportsmanship is discussed.

Athletic contests and youngsters The athletic contest was created to serve an individual end â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the objective and accurate determination of superior performance and, ultimately, of excellence. A contest is about winning and losing. Two characteristics of athletic contests are: 1 the expectation that participants won't show too much emotion, either winning or losing, and 2. the expectation that both players will follow the explicit rules of the contest.

We ask athletes to disci-

pline themselves and practice hard, sacrifice for months to increase performance skills, tram both physically and mentally, and then act like it doesn't matter when they lose.

Our society's ideal of sportsmen and women is "modesty in victory, composure in defeat."

Tennis is one of the few self-officiated sports. Players are expected to make line calls fairly and, if unsure, the code requires the player to concede the call to the opponent.

How coaches handle sportsmanship coaching situations is critical in their performance as role models for their students. Understanding that there are two sets of rules is very important in having a player respond in the proper fashion.

For example, the following scenarios happen often in a game of tennis. The choices players make in these situations might vary with the conditions under which they are playing. â&#x20AC;˘ Your opponent is on the other side of the court and your down-theline shot is 1 inch out. You see the ball clearly out, but your opponent does not ask you to make the call, assuming it was in. The code requires you to call the ball.

Sporting event: You call the ball out: the code requires it.

Athletic contest: You call the bailout: the rules of tennis require it. â&#x20AC;˘ You serve down the middle of the court and the opponent cannot make the call. The code does not require you to call against yourself.

Sporting event: Uncertainty, play a let.

Athletic contest: Uncertainty, the ball is an ace.

In the first instance in each of these examples, the goal of the players is maximizing fun so decisions are made that avoid conflict and increase enjoyment. In the second instance m each example, the players struggle to find equal and fair application of the rules of tennis.

Teaching sportsmanship Discussion opportunities for proper athletic contest sportsmanship most often occur at tournaments or school dual matches, or in practice matches. At these events, many circumstances arise that can lead to discussions about sportsmanship. If a coach travels to tournaments with her students, difficult but very powerful learning moments often occur. If the coach

doesn't travel, talking to the students on the phone at the end of the day is also a way to review their sportsmanship behavior.

The professional can teach her students the difference between sportsmanship models by putting them into different practice situations. Many times I will put older, more experienced players against weaker, younger ones, giving the older players instructions that they are not to hit any winners, but strive to play consistently. The weaker player sees his better opponent being very consistent, playing all the balls that are close, and can model his own behavior on this example.

Another way to teach more competitive sportsmanship to up-and-coming players is to place them against better players with some sort of handicap. Many elite players in our program have had to play nondommant-handed tennis (with no two-handed backhands) against a vastly weaker opponent. Both players battle, because the more skilled player hates to lose to anyone, and the less skilled player sees the opportunity for a win over someone very, very good. The matches are tight and hard fought, often with the weaker player winning.

Even if the weaker player doesn't win, he is exposed to the sort of sportsmanship that elite players practice in athletic contests â&#x20AC;&#x201D; namely, playing by the letter, playing fair and competing hard.

Areas that come up quite often in practice matches where there is uncertainty on what sort of sportsmanship rules o govern include double

bounces, serving and completely missing the ball, and line calls. Each of these areas has a very clear-cut set of rules.

Coaches can use a warmup to give their students a chance to mix the sort of behavior inherent in each of these types of events. After stretching, players start with a partner and hit close contact volleys. After a given time frame or number of hits in a row, there is a rotation. There might be 16 players warming up, with one player on each court staying stationary. The other 12 players would rotate around all four courts in a giant circle. With a mixed workout group, the strongest players stay stationary and everyone else rotates around them. Each player is thereby exposed to a mixture of levels.

Each strong player that is stationary will hit with at least five to 10 partners. In the course of that many hitting partners, some will be as good, some weaker and some very weak. The stationary player will vary how she hits by the skill level of her hitting partner. If the partner is strong, the hitting will be more competitive. If the partner is weak, the hitting will be more careful and the player will attempt to set the ball up so that a rally can be sustained. This teaches flexibility to all players. Older players know they are expected to behave this way either by instruction from the coach or from previous experience.

Weaker players again learn by modeling their behavior after more skilled partners.

USPTA The 1995 Professional Tennis Management (PTM) banquet weekend at Ferris State University (Big Rapids, Mich.) provided several opportunities for PTM students to learn from industry professionals. Workshop speakers included PTM graduates and USPTA members Robert Taylor of British Columbia, Canada, and Doug Lewis of Lansing, Mich., Kirk Anderson of Houston, USPTA director of education; and Will Hoag of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., national USPTA vice president. The new president of the Utah Professional Tennis Association is USPTA professional Warren Pretorius, director of tennis at the Park City (Utah) Racquet Club.

Pretorius USPTA professionals Mark Booth and Mark Gonzalez conducted a tournament at the Southbridge Racquet Club in Savannah, Ga., this spring to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. The tournament raised $5,500 with more than 110 players.

The program, called Hot SHOTS (Special Help On Tennis Skills), is a not-for-profit organization which will promote tennis in under-represented regions; provide a weekly release of physical energy in a controlled, fun and educational environment; promote physical education, self-discipline, healthy competition, fair play, self-respect and respect for others; and serve as a prototype for similar programs.

The free program will run yearround, beginning in September. The City of Chicago's Park District has donated an outdoor site for the summer, and other companies have donated transportation, racquets, instruction time and tennis balls.

After two days of competition, one of my students was in a tough match. He was leading 6-2, 2-1 when he experienced the onset of cramps. In this athletic contest, cramps are a loss of condition and merit no time-outs. This student was hurting and hunting for a way to get out of his predicament, so he asked for and was granted a bathroom break. He went on to lose the match in three sets with cramps occurring during the end of the second and third sets.

In discussing this event with him after his return home, I confronted him about the bathroom break. He protested that he did go to the bathroom. I pointed out that that was all well and good, but asked if the real reason he
