e held our Executive Committee meeting at the end of April (with two delegates from each of our 17 divisions in attendance) and we're gearing up for our long-range planning meeting at the end of this month. We're going full blast into master planning and setting our course for the future.

At the top of the list is our initiative in certification and education. Internally and externally, it describes us. It's the first part of our mission statement or "purpose" of USPTA, and always a top priority in long-range planning. Our purpose is to raise the standards of the tennis profession and promote the sport.

Promoting the sport is not unique to USPTA. Every industry partner has made this part of its mission, too. But you, the USPTA professional, have direct control over this. Dear USPTA: I e-mailed a few questions to USPTA on Monday, and by Tuesday I was provided with a totally concise and detailed answer to all of my inquiries. It is rare to see such service anywhere. I just wanted to send one more message to thank you for your rapid response.

Scott Alexander, USPTA Fort Bragg, Calif via e-mail Dear USPTA. This letter was prompted by Tennis Today" in the March issue of Sportstyle.

What's wrong with tennis? Why are people turned off to tennis? Why do we lose prospective new players to other sports? One of the main reasons is the industry itself. Nobody wants to take the blame in an industry looking at the bottom line. What is lacking is educating those who should be in the know — those who sell and string racquets and those who teach. They should know what to do after the racquet leaves the manufacturer.

The ads tout the miracles of modern technology and what it can do for your game. But what they don't tell you is how this can be achieved — by matching the player to the frame and the string. We lose the potential player to another sport if this is not achieved. We can get them onto the court, but we must put the right equipment in their hands.

For example, I watched a local pro giving a tennis lesson. When the student hit the ball, the resonance wasn't right, there was no depth to the shot and it lacked direction. After the lesson, the student told me that she had owned the racquet four to five years and it had never been restrung. The string had lost its resiliency, elasticity and elongation. This person's game will stagnate because of lack of direction from her pro and her lack of knowledge as to why she should restnng.

Not enough is being done in our industry to educate its professionals. PGA professionals don t get their cards if they can't repair and rework a golf club. One highly placed executive told me, "It's the stringer s job to educate the public. We sell the product." What a myopic approach.

I've strung at the U.S. Open and other tournaments and spoken to ATP pros.

They know what they like, but a majority don't know why.

How many club players give their string order to a salesperson or desk clerk at the club where they play? What about the person who comes on court for a lesson with a 10-year-old hand-medown? There is a racquet company out there that prestrings its demos in Asia three to six months before they are used.

By the time it gets into a player s hands, the string is practically dead. I was told by their research and development department that my complaint was the' only one ever received. (Not according to my conversations with other shop owners at The Super Show.)

My feeling, from experience and what I've seen, is that the industry sells string, but many people can't tell you about the interaction of that string with a racquet.

There s a company selling string because they have to. They pass on what the manufacturer tells them to without the foggiest notion about what they are saying.

The USTA and TIA may get new players onto the court, but it's our job to keep them there through a strong educational program.

Hall of fame opening a tribute to world's teaching professionals and Tooley's vision to honor his profession

T

he United States Professional Tennis Association realized a long-standing dream on April 20, with the opening of the USPTA International Tennis Professional Hall of Fame.

President Kathy Woods and 1994 hall of fame inductee George Bacso cut the gold ribbon that opened the hall of fame and archives during a semi-annual Executive Committee meeting at USPTA World Headquarters in Houston. The Board of Directors, Executive Committee, divisional executive administrators and USPTA staff were on hand for the dedication.

The occasion also allowed us to remember one of our own who dreamed of a special place of honor for his peers and the archives that chronicle the history of our great Association. Fay Tooley, who died in 1992, donated $5,000 to urge our directors to take this project as seriously as he dreamed it should be. His contribution was instrumental in beginning what will be the ongoing task of both honoring the achievements of tennis-teaching professionals throughout the world and recording and displaying the artifacts and historical documents of the teaching profession.

It wasn t until we purchased a permanent home for USPTA that we could begin the process of establishing an appropriate place for the USPTA International Tennis Professional Hall of Fame. This new domain for the tennis-teaching profession is yet another way to legitimize the role of teaching professionals in our industry, while creating a home in which to recognize and honor our peers.

As Fay once said, "As in the case of all legitimate professions, it is an historical fact that for a variety of reasons people commonly attracted to a single calling band together for their mutual benefit."

As the world's oldest, largest and most credible body of teaching professionals, it was our duty to create a place of distinction for the exceptional people who have earned a place on the walls of USPTA's Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame inductees George Bacso and Arthur Ashe are the focal points of the new area. Their pho-

tographs and inductee plaques are displayed in the center of the "wall of honor." Other hall of fame categories include the Alex Gordon Award for USPTA National Professional of the Year, USPTA National Champion, Coach of the Year, High School Coach of the Year, Touring Coach of the Year, Division of the Year, Master Professional, USTA/USPTA Community Service Awards and Player of the Year (male and female open and various age categories) Other awards that will be displayed in the future include a meritorious induction category for members who exceed normal standards in a combination of three areas service to the profession, teaching merit and playing merit.

Some of the famous names of yesteryear that grace the National ChamHeckler pions wall include Vmce Richards, 1927- Bill Tilden, 193 I Fred Perry, 1938; Ellsworth Vines, 1939' Don Budge, 1940; Bruce Barnes, 1943 Welby Van Horn, 1945 Bobby Riggs, 1946; Jack Kramer, 1948; Pancho Segura, 1950; Tut Bartzen, 1962, Sam Giammalva, 1964; and Mike Davis, 1965 Another wall is dedicated to past national presidents of USPTA and includes a display of photos for each president dating back to 1927 The next addition to the hall of fame will be glass cases that will house special memorabilia, business records and other materials that document USPTA's 69-year history.

The USPTA International Tennis Professional Hall of Fame is a special place that will grow more valuable with time and the outstanding accomplishments of our peers. We would also appreciate any information that will add to the historical authenticity of our commitment to this continual process.

I have no doubt that Fay Tooley would be very proud of USPTA's most recent accomplishment — its ability to recognize and suitably honor its own members and those who uphold the standards USPTA has established. Most of all, he would be proud that this remarkable place has established an incentive and ability for each member to serve the industry, their peers and themselves. SP°

Fast-food options can be healthy • When I take my players to tournaments, we always seem to be eating on the run. I know I can pack lunches and snacks, but what are your recommendations when you absolutely, positively have to eat at a fast-food restaurant?

This is an age-old quesIhat has bothered parents and coaches for years. First, let me say that the concept of eating fast does not fit into the normal regimen I recommend, but I recogV > H* mze there are times you must live this ; s lifestyle. Since there's no way around it, here are my suggestions on the quick hits.

There is nothing wrong with eating at fast-food restaurants, unless all you ever order are burgers and fries. Several fastfood restaurants have very healthy selections. Burger King has the BK Broiler, McDonald's has the McGrilled Chicken Sandwich

11";;:: A ,:;:vy| hamburger percent fat. and Hardee's and Wendy's have their versions of the same meal. And all these fast-food chains have very good salad selections (but watch out for the dressing) I go to fast-food restaurants quite often because I have two young children. When ordering, I always ask them to omit the sauce but I sometimes substitute mustard or ketchup in its place.

Lettuce, tomato and pickle add flavor to any sandwich.

At hotels and some fast-food

restaurants, pizza is a very popular item. A cheese pizza with nothing else on it is about 27 percent fat — not bad for fast food. A hamburger is 56 percent fat.

Here is a tasty trick I learned by chance while dining at a pizza restaurant with a friend who has a lactose intolerance and can't eat cheese. My friend ordered a small pizza with no cheese, but with extra tomato sauce, mushrooms and other vegetables.

This astounded me. I asked the manager if it was a common request. He said it ::> ! :;•":;• : happened occasionally but not too often. :;: T I decided to ,^,.,:a~r order the same thing.

Yes, I know. We grow up with certain tastes, the idea of pizza with no cheese seems incredulous. I must tell you, though, it was absolutely terrific. As an extra bonus, it ended up being 5 percent to 10 percent fat instead of 27 percent to 30 percent. Adding meat to a pizza raises the fat content even more.

Many fast-food restaurants also feature pasta bars. Just be wary of how much butter is on the pasta. If prepared poorly, a very healthy staple can become unhealthy by being loaded with fat. &•

A goal-setting approach for professionals

oal setting is a vital part of a tennis instructor's job. How we prioritize our time, direct our attention and instruct our pupils should be based on goals that we develop for the maximum benefit of each student.

For instance, if a 4-5 player wants to improve backhand steadiness, look to see if different situations such as high topspin balls or balls requiring large amounts of lateral footwork — are causing consistency to break down. If a I 5 player has the same desire, look closely at the shot construction, especially the use of the kinetic chain. Your analysis will help you zero in on specific goal setting for their improvement.

Goals help to direct our focus and instruction. To make rapid improvement possible, goals must fit into a logical progression. If a goal is established to change the shape of a player s stroke, all energies from both the professional and the student — must be maintained there.

Comments like, "You need to hit it closer to the corner," are inappropriate because the instructor's focus would have been turned to the shot's result.

Similarly, if a goal had been established to take short balls on the rise and approach the net as soon as possible, commenting on backswmg length would be inadvisable. If backswmg is cited as a continual problem, the goals and instruction must be turned away from the strategy of approaching and redirected to the technical

skill in need.

Professionals should not mix and match their instruction to students. Learning requires many focused, gradual steps for a skill to become automatic. All efforts must be directed toward one goal and only one goal at a time.

To keep this requirement in check, I have developed a system to stay on track. All our oncourt teaching activities fall into three phases. A brief description follows.

Phase 1 The first phase, skill acquisition, focuses on maintaining form in the strokes of tennis. As a student masters the elements of a stroke, he will automatically play smoother, more complete strokes. Our focus here should be on providing feedback limited to attaining these ends.

Little attention should be given to a shot's result at this time.

Phase 2. The second phase, skill refinement and tactical develop-

ment, centers on keeping a developed stroke intact as it is played in increasingly demanding situations. The student must adapt the developed stroke to controlled amounts of pressure.

Increased footwork and efficiently responding to harder, deeper balls becomes the instructional focus. You may gradually add some demands on placement. Changes in a stroke s shape should not be addressed.

Phase 3. The third phase, strategy application, focuses on the correct use and choice of skills in game-like situations. Responding automatically in specific play situations is the goal in this phase. Drills that promote effective responses to game-like situations are helpful.

Since students should be concentrating on developing and applying strategically correct choices, a comment on form would only divert attention away from the goal.

A common mistake is to flood students with a barrage of information. While your advice may be accurate, it cannot be processed if it is applied unsystematically.

To develop a learning pro gression that is sensitive to the various stages of skill development, set goals that are very specific. As each goal is attained, set another, and then another. When you present students with the conditions that enable them to focus upon and work through specific challenges, learning occurs very quickly. S?°

The USPTA liability policy includes $2 million in liability insurance, while on court, for bodily injury to others, and for damage to property not in the tennis professional's care, custody or control. Players compete for $35,000 in prize money

SPTA members who love to play tennis will put their skills to the test in the $ 30,000 USPTA National Championships, to be held during the 1996 USPTA National Convention.

The tournament, presented by Wilson Racquet Sports, is scheduled Sept. 14-18.

Men and women may play singles or doubles in a variety of age categories. A wheelchair division with competition for men's and women's singles and doubles will be offered if there are enough participants.

A registration form for the National Championships is on page 13 It must be returned to the World Headquarters by Aug. 13 The USPTA National Team Championships are scheduled Sept. 19-21 Each division may have two teams, with each team consisting of two men's doubles, one women's doubles, one mixed doubles and one men's 3 5 doubles. The Team Championships will use an eight-game pro set (no-ad scoring) with a tiebreak at seven games all.

The USPTA National Senior Team Championships is a doubles only, regular draw, single-elimination tournament. Divisions will designate two doubles teams in each category: women's 3 5 women's 45 men's 45, men's 55 and men's 65 A total of $5,000 in prize money will be split between winners of both team tournaments.

USPTA Adult Tennis League™ attracts players and fills courts

eople have good intentions. At least when it conies to setting personal goals throughout the year- save more money, take one great trip, get more exercise Unfortunately, the money goes to bills, vacation time is spent planting a garden and a regular tennis partner still hasn't been found.

The USPTA Adult Tennis LeagueSM provides an answer to one of the most common tennis complaints: "I can t find anyone to play with!" Professionals like this league for many reasons. It is flexible enough to be used during any seven weeks. Large and small facilities may adapt it since it requires only two courts. And the doubles-only format is open to men, women or mixed doubles.

If you've never used it before, here's how it works. A facility may have one or more squads. Each squad consists of eight teams divided between four levels of play (two players per team and two teams per level) The recommended levels are 3.0 and below, 3 5, 4-0 and 4-5 5.0. However, pros may adjust the levels within squads to meet player availability.

A squad should have at least 16 players. If there are not enough players at a level to form a squad, the pro may adjust the format to include the four most popular levels within his area. He may also duplicate levels within a squad. The bottom line is, go with whatever works best for you.

Another possibility to closing the gap between skill levels is Tencap, the official handicapping system of the USPTA. This popular alternative is currently in use at hundreds of sites around the country. Designed to 16 ADDvantage/Junel996

equalize play, this computerized system assigns each participant a Tencap ranging from 0 (the best) to 65 The handicap is the difference between two players on the Tencap scale and is the number of points that may be taken by the player with the higher Tencap at any time during the game.

A player's Tencap is based on the percentage of games won relative to the caliber of the opponents played, and is recalculated every two weeks.

One big advantage to this system is that players are able to find more competitive matches against suitable opponents, which results in more people signing up for lessons, browsing through the pro shop and enjoying a cold drink at the snack bar after the match.

It is recommended, however, that the Tencap between two players not exceed 10 points for the same reason you wouldn't put a novice on the court with Venus Williams — both players would wind up exasperated.

Teaching pros may run the USPTA Adult Tennis League during any sevenweek period from July through December. To participate, a player must be affiliated with a sponsoring club, facility or organization and be at least 19 years old. Local squad entry fees may vary depending on court costs, clinics or special league events, but should be relatively inexpensive.

Leagues are a powerful medium for increasing tennis participation in a community. Most people who oin are between the ages of 18 and 54, and are more likely than the recreational player to play regularly, involve their children and buy tennis apparel.

So in the end, everyone wins. The

Each league consists of a maximum of eight squads, and each squad has eight doubles teams. Although a league may have fewer squads, eight squads offer the greatest player enjoyment. A facility may have more than one squad.

Area Director — A USPTA pro who runs the league in a designated Area and sets the schedule, determines squad and doubles formats, selects awards, sets entry fees, provides incentives to Site Directors and relays information to USPTA.

Squads are divided into Tencap or NTRP equivalent levels with two doubles teams at each level.

Squad — Eight doubles teams (two at each level) that represent a tennis facility or organization. The recommended squad size has a minimum of 16 players.

Each Area Director sets the seven-week league season (any time from July 1 through Dec. 31). Site Directors should be consulted when setting the schedule.

Site Director The tennis pro or volunteer at a facility who coordinates one or more squads. The Site Director does not have to be a USPTA tennis professional.

Level — One of four playing divisions (based on the Tencap or NTRP levels) of a squad. Each level has two doubles teams.

Tencap A computerized tennis rating and handicapping system based on a scale from 0 (best) to 65 (beginner). Tencap is the offical tennis handicap system of the USPTA.

A squad member may play at a higher skill level than his or her rating but not at a lower skill level.

Failure to play at the correct level will result in a forfeit.

Level captain A player in charge of the two doubles teams on his or her level. Level captains must make sure team members play at correct Tencap or NTRP levels and report for each rnatch. At home league matches, level captains ensure their teams provide balls (USPTA Pro Penn). Before matches, level captains of opposing squads must exchange lineups in writing. Also, both captains must record match results and send score cards to the Area Director each week.

Names of players added to the roster or moved to an advanced level must be submitted in writing to the Area Director before the match.

The third move of a player is permanent.

Team — One of two doubles teams at each level on a squad.

Professional players and full-time teaching professionals are ineligible.

Mixed level One women's doubles team and one men's doubles team play at each level in a squad.

FORMAT An Area Director may choose from among four types of doubles formats: men's, women's, mixed doubles or a mixed level league.

Score card instructions Complete the upper portion of the score card and write the players' full names. each match and circle the winners' names.

Each match is worth 1 point. Record total match points for home and visiting teams. Both level captains must complete and sign the score cards and return them to the Area Director the match. If neither score card is received, each team will receive no points.

Area Directors will mail schedules to each Site Director whose squad has paid its fees by deadline. It is recommended that two levels play at home and two levels play away each week to minimize court time at each facility

MATCHES Play will be the best two out of three sets, regular scoring, with a 12point tiebreaker if play reaches 6-all. Each squad member may play only one match per day If time becomes a factor use no-add scoring or play a 12-point tiebreaker to determine the third set if the match is at one set each.

Warm-up is limited to 10 minutes with a 15-minute default rule.

The Area Director will send a schedule of matches to each Site Director who will forward it to level captains.

Home squads will furnish new balls to ensure consistency from court to court. It is recommended that only USPTA Pro Penn tennis balls be used for league play.

PUyoffs The Area Director will decide if playoffs will be held and how many squads and teams at each level will participate. Season results may not affect playoffs.

If there is no playoff: Champions will be named in each category top squad and the top four levels. Winners will be the squad and level teams who won the most matches during the season.

If two squads or teams are tied, the tie shall be broken by the first of the following procedures that applies: •

Most matches won during the season in head-to-head competition between the two tied squads or level teams.

•

The least number of games lost during the season.

•

The two squads or teams will have a head-to-head playoff to determine the season champion.

Scorn NQ Each match is worth 1 point. A squad may earn up to 8 points per week. Score cards must be received by the Area Director within one week of the match. Both level captains must sign and return score cards. If only one card is received, it will be the recorded score; if neither is received, teams for both squads wi I receive no points.

All forfeits shall be noted as a forfeit, and the non-forfeiting team shall be given the score 6-0, 6-0.

Rained-out matches should be made up within one week or both teams will receive no points. If a match is suspended because of rain, begin with the same set and game score when play resumes.

If there is a playoff: • Squad playoffs. A tournament could be held for all squads in the league, with seedings determined by the final season results.

Level playoffs (recommended). Same procedure as for Squad playoffs, but will follow by at least 24 hours. If there is a tie, the winner will be decided by the first that applies: the least games lost during that playoff match, or a 12-point tiebreaker between the squads' No. 1 doubles teams at that level.

Creating tension-free players

by Rami Zelikovich, USPTA Do you find yourself teaching tense and "unnatural" beginning players?

Do you find yourself using the latest information about the science of hiomechanics but the tension does not go away?

Do you find yourself telling your students to be patient because tennis is a difficult game to learn?

Tension is a part of almost any player s game, from beginners to pros. It is also the biggest barrier for achieving peak performance. Understanding its sources and being able to teach students how to relax will improve the rate of your success dramatically.

Tension can be caused by physical or mental reasons and, at times, a little of both. While intermediate players are often tense due to poor stroke technique, and advanced players are tense because of mental reasons, beginners tend to have a

mixture of both. Poor coordination or lack of muscle memory on the physical side, and fear and misperceptions on the mental side, often produce tense, reactive and dysfunctional actions.

Using a total approach one that interrelates both physical and mental aspects — can create tremendous improvement almost instantly.

There are three common patterns that can lead to dysfunctional actions: • The way the follow-through motion is taught • The way a student perceives time • The way a student perceives energy and force The follow-through motion is the most basic action taught to beginners.

It is the movement of the racquet through the ball in the direction of a target. Although some techniques are scientifically proven to be superior to others, most students, and especially beginners, have difficulty performing them. Since they often find themselves in anything but perfect positioning, they must choose between using the suggested "perfect stroke technique" and possibly missing the ball, or adjusting and compensating their swing for the situation, which demands sacificmg the "perfect form." see Tension, page 25

The details of stroke technique can be modified later, when a player s positioning, coordination and confidence improve and tension disappears. Use more game simulated drills, rather than feeding drills, which are often unrealistic.

Change student's time perception Obviously, there is much more time available to these players than they think. Just before a student is about to hit the ball, keep using the following words in a dramatic fashion. "Slow, slow, slow" or "Wait, wait, wait" (as if you are pulling on his shirt to slow him down)

Change student's energy and force perception Say "Soft, soft, soft" or "Gently, gently, gently," or use zero force.

Tennis has the reputation of being a difficult sport to learn. By reducing tension and easing up on detailed stroke techniques we can speed up beginners' progress and reduce their frustrations. They then will become more accurate consistent, confident and committed to the game. S?°

Tennis Carnivals, equipment create enthusiasm for tennis "Mr. Rogers" has a whole new type of activity for chil dren at the Handlery Swim & Tennis Club. The Mr. Rogers Little Tennis program, run

by Mike Rogers, USPTA, is for children, ages 3 to 7 It has been running almost every Saturday for one-and-a-half years, and children of club members and nonmembers attend.

There is no formal registration — children just show up in the morning. Parents are welcome, too. Rogers puts them to work feeding balls and helping the children at the Wilson Tennis Carnival equipment stations.

In addition to the regular weekly clinics, Rogers has special, free holiday clinics.

He holds a one-day clinic the week before Christmas that is popular with the kids. Last year, more than 50 children attended. After the tennis lessons, Rogers sneaks away and Santa Claus returns wearing tennis shoes and giving away prizes to everyone.

USPTA Little Tennis™ is a huge success at the Hmsdale Racquet Club in Hinsdale, 111., where more than 85 children participate each week.

"Every day is a tennis carnival" theme days with carnival music include: "Helium Balloon Day," "Hat Day" and "Bring a Friend Day." Each session is followed with reward stickers and daily snacks for everyone.

The road to success began when the club held its free Little Tennis Carnival™ days earlier this year. It caught the attention "of the community and local child care centers with the help of press releases in local newspapers, mailings and hours of phone calls.

"We are very excited about the interest in tennis that this has stimulated," said Mike Lange, USPTA, director of tennis at the club.

ave you ever wondered how you would fare against the pros?

Could you win a few games against the best in the world? If these questions have ever entered into your mind, then you'll be interested in this list of the top 10 ATP Tour players and their Tencaps.

Ten Cap Inc. decided to put the official rating and handicapping system of the USPTA to

the test. All the results from the 1995 ATP Tour were entered into the computer and processed every two weeks. The results were quite interesting! Please keep in mind that each tournament and match were weighted equally, whether it was a first round or the final.

All players started with a temporary Tencap of zero, and only players who had recorded at least 50 sets were included in

this test. Also, these ratings were effective for Dec. 31 1995 and changed throughout the year.

Note in the graph how the fluctuations occurred.

Are the pros just a little more out of reach than you thought? Don t be discouraged!

Just think, if your Tencap is near zero, then you could be playing on the tour. We also found the ratings to span just over 10 points, even among all the pros who had played more than 50 sets. The 125th rated player in our list, Aaron Krickstem, came in with a Tencap of 4-6 after recording 108 sets. It is also interesting to note that Thomas Muster, ranked third on the final ATP standings (which count only a player s best 14 results) ended up 16th on the Tencap list (which counts all results) with a rating of-2.6 with 252 sets.

Moreover, accord ng to ITF's rules, on the women's side, one has to "make herself ava lable" for Fed Cup in at least two years from 1 993 to 996 to be eligible.

Neither Seles nor Capriati played Fed Cup from 993 to 995, but usua ly superstars are above the rules. One can argue that Seles did "make herself ava lable" to play in the 995 fina So most kely Seles wi play singles. The question is the other two singles slots and whether Capriati wi be grandfathered nto the team Another question is doubles. Apparently, Martina is still nterested but Gig Fernandez, the best U.S. doubles player, openly says she wi not team up with Martina because Gigi doesn't th nk they can win (with Martina playing). Therefore, if the USTA/B.J. King would ke to grandfather Martina into the team, they have to give up Gig , making the team even weaker It rema ns to be seen whether the superstars will continue to get specie treatment and personal connections will have priority over a "fa r" selection process.

I wouldn't be surprised if Martina is picked. And I wouldn't be too disappointed if the rules were bent for her.

When tennis first came back to the Olympics, Martina got shafted She was a ready committed to TeamTennis and the Fed Cup was held in the middle of the TeamTennis season.

Fed Cup format was different then. The United States won severe Fed Cups with Martina teaming with Chris Evert and Pam Shriver It would be nice for this great player to play in the Olympics once in her lifetime.

As for Gigi, she has a point, but a lot of usual doubles teams will be split since the teams are by country for the Olympics. I think she and Martina could play well together.

It will be interesting to see what transpires.

fter years of playing tennis, I've noticed how many players try to get the mental edge prior to and during a match with their comments, behavior and attitude, sometimes more ethically than others! For example, in a recent tournament, I watched a player argue with his opponent on two occasions that his let serve was actually 5 feet over the net! This was obviously an attempt to make his opponent angry and throw off his concentration, and not very sportsman ike.

There is a fine line between clever gamesmanship and crude dishonesty and aggression Any similar experiences?

What is acceptable behavior? What is not? How should we respond to unethica behavior?

It pulled my partner out of the court He hit the ba around the net instead of over it know that is legal, but n the process of doing that, he stepped not on our opponents' court but out of bounds on their side. Who wins the point?

Peter Burwash, USPTA Master Professional and founder of Peter Burwash International, and Kathy Woods, national Burwash USPTA president, are the 1995 recipients of the International Tennis Hall of Fame s Tennis EduWoods cational Merit awards. The awards are presented annually to a man and woman who have made notable contributions to the expansion and development of the sport and demonstrated leadership in

USPTA member Kevin McClure, director of tennis for the Arlington Y Tennis and Squash Club, was the winner of the USPTA Mid-Atlantic workshop and convention seminar contest. His topic, "Are You Wasting Your Timet" dealt with developing an industry-wide communication network through a voicemail system.

Derin Riley USPTA, has )omed Bonita Bay Club as a tennis professional. He will organize and conduct group clinics, private and group lessons and other member programs.

The USTA Western Section's 1996 Cap Leighton Award winner is USPTA member Tom Martin. This award recognizes teaching professionals who contribute to tennis in their communities beyond their livelihood.

Former world champion Stan Smith, USPTA, was on hand for the kickoff of the city of Charleston (S.C.) department of recreation s inner-city tennis clinic.

More than 150 children participated. Arthur Anastopoulo, USPTA, is director of the six-year-old program.
