If USTA's only intention is to supplement the skills of teaching professionals to train competitive players and not to use the coaching program to broaden its control over teaching professionals, the recommendations made by USPTA will more than satisfy USTA's goal.

The thingo we fear most is that USTA will begin to mandate specific qualifications that have little or nothing to do with coaching for those who want to receive the USTA coaching credential. We have no guarantees that USTA will not refuse player subsidies to competitors who don't have a USTA coach, or that the USTA coaching credential will not be required for a teaching professional to run a USTA-sanctioned tournament.

These are just two examples of what we may be facing. And, this will be the first step toward controlling the employment status of teaching professionals and the tennis marketplace.

Expanding USTA control over the entire spectrum of the tennis industry is not best for the sport, even if USTA rationalizes its actions with heavy doses of spin, such as: 'As the national governing body, we need to be more responsible than we have been in the past" or "Having just one brand (USTA's of course) is less confusingo to the public" or the one that always strikes a sympathetic cord: "We're doing this to grow the game."

No matter what spin the USTA places on its coaching credential program, it's important to remember that USPTA's president, board members and I have spent endless hours analyzing, negotiating and compromising to find a way of accepting USTA's rationale. It just won't fit!

USTA's plans to get into the certification or credentialling of coaches and teaching professionals (there's no difference in the minds of teaching pros or the public unless 7you're willingo to admit that teachingo professionals cannot handle the enr tire job) is just another attempt for control. The USTA claims it wants to get into the certification business "just a little bit."

It is comprised of computers and networks of computers all over the world.

It is estimated that there are 35 million users worldwide, a total that some experts expect to increase to 300 million by the year 2000.

The most popular features of the current Internet are e-mail, online "chatting," information retrieval and bulletin boards. Email and information retrieval are the two most relevant features for tennis professionals.

Another thing to consider is whether the ISP includes Internet access software. As the ISP market has become more competitive, the product offerings for end-users are rapidly changing. A product and pricing analysis is recommended before signing on with any service.

Getting hooked up Since most tennis facilities are not part of a university or private research effort, it will be necessary for them to hook up to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider, or ISP. Such a connection is made with an internal or external modem and access to a telephone line.

(A modem with at least a 28,800 baud rate is recommended.)

The most v i s i b l e ISP is America Online. Many local and regional ISPs are also capable of o 1 providing good service. There are a number of considerations w h e n choosing an ISP, with the most important being cost. It is important to select an ISP with a local dial-in number to avoid paying for long distance service.

Because of the vast volume of information on the Internet, many people find it an overwhelming experience to try to find anything. A variety of search engines has been developed to assist in this process. Some of the more popular search engines are Lycos, Magellan, Excite, Infos/ o eek, Yahoo, WebCrawler, HotBot and Alta Vista.

Engines such as Yahoo are more like directories in that they can help you find individuals or organizations listed by categories. For example, an April 1998 search in Yahoo identified 55 categories andl,388 tennis-related sites.

Searching in Yahoo can be accomplished through the search engines or by looking in the recreation and sports directory until you come across the "tennis" listing.

To use a search engine, it is necessary to identify key words related to a desired topic. The process of identifying appropriate key words is more sophisticated than is initially apparent.

Selecting "Options" provides you with more features that allow you to fine tune your search.

Creating your own web site Now that you are familiar with the Internet, you might entertain the idea of creating your own web site. An effective web site for your facility and racquet program can help protect your job and profession.

The development of a successful web site begins with preliminary research to identify what type of site is appropriate for your facility and programs.

A goals assessment will help identify what you want this site to accomplish and how you might measure it. Based on your o 7 research and goals, the contents of the web site can be developed and put in place. The work doesn't end here, as all effective sites must be maintained on a regular basis to give tennis enthusiasts a reason to return often. You do have a convenient â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and free â&#x20AC;&#x201D; option, however, if you do not wish to develop and maintain a web site yourself.

You don't even have to own a computer to take advantage o of this service. However, this is the most user-friendly method of becoming involved with computers, and it shows how they soon will affect the employment of teaching pros.

USPTA cannot make frequent changes to your Personal Website, but will, upon request, consider updating your site on a limited basis.

Preliminary research Although the Internet has been in existence for a number

of years, only recently has it become an accepted and recommended marketingt> tool. If a tennis professional or a club decides to create an independent web site, it can be an effective marketing campaign for the facility and its tennis programs. The site will most likely include a mix of advertising and promotional efforts in the following media: print, radio, television, telemarketing, Internet and direct mail.

The tactics, format and protocol for marketing on the Internet are different from those used in other types of media. It is important for newcomers to realize that the Internet has a distinct culture with a set of idiosyncrasies that define acceptable and unacceptable methods of marketing.

A great way to learn about the Internet and tennis-related web sites is to browse around for the major tennis industry associations, manufacturers and facilities. For example, check out the USPTA web site at www.uspta.org.

Preparation and development The goals for a web site should be identified in realistic, measurable terms as a means of monitoring its effectiveness. Counters may be placed on certain pages to track the number of hits, and web site coupons can be used as a means of directly identifying who visited the web site. Today, an effective web site can provide a tennis professional with a competitive advantage. In the future, such a web site will be a necessary part of doing business.

Information on your web site should be presented in an attractive manner. It is necessary to provide rich content and valueadded information that improves the "surfing" experience. Common, understandable "tennis language" will make users comfortable reviewing the web site. see Web site, page 25 O

Participants are encouraged to take their loved ones along in the name of "growing family tennis ." Activit~es are scheduled for family members of all ages, and parents will receive a special deal on registration for their children.

Former Olympian Marilyn K:ing, who competed in the 1972 ~nd 1976 Olympic Pentathlon, will be keynote speaker.

Other presenters include Vic Braden, Jack Groppel, Ph.D. , Gundars Tilmanis, Joe Dinoffer, Luis Mediero, Dave Kozlowski, Tom Martin , Bill Tym and Marcia Rodriguez, the 1997 national seminar contest wmner.

Various opportunities for education, net worki ng and social activity are planned. The schedule includes more than 50 seminars, five Specialty Courses , the $30,000 USPTA International Championships (sponsored by Wilson) , and the USPTA International Tennis Buying Show.

Each Specialty Course is worth 2 credits in USPTA's Career Development Program and costs $25. A list of topics and a registration form will appear in a . future issue of ADDvantage.

Members interested in taking the -Certification Training Course or upgrading their classification must register by Aug. 15 by calling the USPTA Membership Department. The exam and CTt: will be offered in portions over a six-day period. The CTC will cost $40.

Player/event regulations: Each eligible player is limited to two events.

An event is two players or teams competing. Men's open limited to a 128-draw. Events may use block seeding, depending on size and strength of draw.

Mixed doubles rule: Players may play regular doubles and mixed doubles.

Surface: Hardcourt Individual entry fees: $50/singles, $20/doubles. Tournament players must register for the World Conference on Tennis ; tournament and convention fees must be paid separately (see convention registration form, Page 15). Singles entry and fees deadline, August 15. Doubles may register at tournament site, preregistration encouraged.

It is also necessary to consider technical subtleties, such as those that allow for efficient retrieval of information. A web site can be developed in a way that allows people with different browsers to access the information in various ways.

No users should be excluded from the process. Safety, security and privacy will be issues that should also be addressed.

Web site users who purchase goods or submit their name must be assured that their privacy will not be violated.

A final crowning touch to your web site is to provide links to USPTA, Tencap, Penn, Wilson and other key industry web sites. The inclusion of links makes the statement that your site is a gateway to all that is happening in tennis.
