USPTA FROM THE CEO
MAY DAY, MAY DAYS, MAY DAZE!
N
o, this is not an emergency communique: our boat is not sinking! Far from it. It is a prideful message to our membership about the dizzying level of activity here at the USPTA and at the USTA National Campus during the month of May (plus, I thought the title was catchy!). Buckle your seat belts because I have a lot to report. In this space last December, I reported on an Industry Summit that took place in the USPTA HQ in October. Representatives from many of the key stakeholders in
be telling as to how the sport was performing, 2) that the industry would only grow if there were a significant increase in the number of tennis teaching professionals/providers but also of higher quality (the best trained), and 3) that we develop an army of experts who could deliver entry level programs for juniors and adults. Having boots on the ground is one thing, but actually measuring their success is another. To understand if this army is effective and making a difference, we must be able to monitor their outcomes and grasp the impact that they will have in the marketplace. Thus, during the first weekend in May and in conjunction with the second Industry Summit, a boot camp of sorts was held with 24 people who were from across the country from various NJTL Chapters, Professional Tennis Management Programs, manufacturers reps, USTA section staff, and equally notable, young professionals who are just getting started in our association, etc. The purpose of the boot camp was to train

our game (manufacturers, USTA board representatives, USTA section executive directors and USTA senior staff, TIA, the media, directors from two of the largest multi-club organizations in the country and of course, USPTA leaders) came together to discuss how we could kick start the industry (like we did back in 2003). In that December piece, I said that it would not be good enough just to talk about possible solutions but that there had to be concrete action steps to do something about our malaise. I also committed that I would provide you a report as to where things stand. Here is that update: Much has transpired since that initial get together. I am happy to report that we reconvened with the same group, again in the USPTA HQ, in early May to inform the participants as to initial plans that came out of that original discussion and how we intend to move forward. From the October meeting, I reported on three resounding takeaways: 1) create an industry dashboard that would accurately measure a variety of metrics that would
USPTA these providers on how to deliver quality entry level programming for players of any age. WOW! This two-day immersion was incredibly powerful. The confidence that these instructors left with on how to go about conducting these programs was palpable. Thanks to the enthusiastic leadership of Craig Jones and Steve Keller, both from USTA-U, these 24 participants are the forebearers of what will become a nationwide group of tennis ambassadors. In fact, there are plans to hold fifteen of these sessions called “Teaching Essentials Level 1” around the country between now and the end of the year with between 12-16 people per session. Imagine nearly 200 people loaded for bear who are responsible for introducing tennis across the country beginning now. As the certification pathway begins to unfold over the next year, these Teaching Essentials courses will be required for all new certification applicants. We expect to host close to 50 of these events around the country in 2020. For two days prior to the boot camp, the USTA also brought in a cross section of top-level tennis teaching professionals and directors to conduct a train-the-trainer session. The goal was to educate these knowledgeable leaders (all who are USPTA certified, by the way) so that they could train staff and other professionals on how best to educate those who are going to be delivering these entry level programs. In total, it was an amazing four days of high energy and learning but just the start of more positive things to come. Yes, the industry dashboard is coming together with a multitude of categories that will be objectively monitored so that every segment of the industry can be informed as to what is happening in our game. We will be finalizing those metrics before the US Open. And yes, the Industry Summit attendees were made fully
USTA/USPTA co-branded ad showcased how both organizations are raising the standards of tennis pros nationwide. aware of the new certification pathway that will be implemented in January 2021 and what full accreditation of the USPTA means to clubs and the tennis teaching professional in general. This will absolutely elevate the standards of tennis teaching professionals (our current mission) and make the oncourt experience so much better for consumers. Lastly and maybe most critically, there was a resounding call to action to redirect precious marketing dollars to those areas of focus that truly will make a difference in driving growth and participation. The consensus amongst the group was unanimous: dramatically increase dollars and marketing resources to those initiatives at the grass roots that will have an impact on participation, both short and long term. This is not a quick fix, it will take constant reinforcement and a persistent commitment to make this happen. After catching a quick breath, the NCAA Team and Individual championships came roaring into town. Eight men’s and eight women’s teams who survived regional and super regional competition arrived for a chance to capture national titles. The USTA National Campus was electric. The weather was incredible and the turnout of local patrons and fans from across the country was awesome. During
the semi-finals and finals of the team event, the parking lots overflowed, including ours! I hope you got a chance to see some of the 50 hours of Tennis Channel coverage and our new, cobranded 30 second commercial that was aired showcasing how USPTA and USTA are raising the standards to raise our game. Congratulations to Texas for winning the men’s team title and to Stanford for taking the women’s crown. During the week, we hosted the ITA Division I Operating Committee meeting in our training room, had a ton of coaches come through our building to say hello, hosted a USPTA booth in a vendor area on the campus and held two mornings of education at the start of the individual tournament with USTA Player Development. Why not take advantage of the time that coaches were here to provide education on fitness and nutrition from experts in those fields? Simultaneously, a national Level II junior tournament took place which was awesome to see those kids get a feel for what the NCAA experience is like. May was without a doubt a dazzling month for tennis and for the USPTA. It is events like these that reinforce the decision that we made to move to the epicenter of tennis in the USA. I am so glad we are here and you should be too.*

USPTA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
LAYING THE FOUNDATION by Gary Trost USPTA President
A
s I start reflecting on my term as president of the United States Professional Tennis Association, one thought continues to come to mind: There is no tennis certification association that comes close to what the USPTA has to offer and where it is going in the future. This is what attracted me to the USPTA over 30 years ago and it is now time that we attract younger, better educated tennis professionals and future leaders of this association. The U30 movement continues to grow every year, the initial momentum has blossomed into an exciting committee with goals for education, growth and involvement in our association. These are our future leaders that are volunteering their time and efforts into
our existing committees and sharing their new ideas. Many of these U30 leaders have come from Professional Tennis Management (PTM) programs and know the importance of the PTM program and the full accreditation that the USPTA has achieved. Just imagine what we look like in 30 years when Every member has had the same education entering our association as these individuals have! Our governance is unparalleled – we have national and divisional boards, national and divisional committees – all these positions are to be renewed in 2020, and all the positions will be advertised in an ADDvantage Magazine later in 2019 and I encourage everyone to apply for what interests you. These groups are all transparent and bring enthusiasm and knowledge from all over America to make the best decisions for our association. Once again, no other association comes close to the governance and the opportunities that are offered to their members. Please volunteer your time and share your ideas as this truly is our strength. The education that is offered and constantly being created is out of this world. With the new accreditation, the very best educators in the world are working to create the education material for this new generation of tennis professionals. Tennis Resources already has terabytes of information available and this will remain available to all of us as we move forward in our own continuing education. The new education

programs of RacquetFit, the Leadership Academy, and Pickleball certification are all offered by the best in the business and for our membership only. Once again, each of the 17 divisions have conferences for you to learn from the best, and network with the leaders in your area. Our new national headquarters staff in Lake Nona has recently celebrated its second birthday. The time has flown by since we opened our doors because of how busy our headquarters is every day. It is a vibrant learning center, staffed with excellent service personnel helping our members excel daily. The executives and staff are truly amazing! The collaboration with the neighbors, the national and USTA Florida staff is outstanding, I truly hope that every member has seen and toured our national headquarters and met the incredibly talented staff. We are the only association with a presence in Lake Nona and we are here for a reason – to be independent and grow tennis with our industry partners. During my tenure on the board, the business of the association was reviewed and modified by the national board and executive committee. Reviewing and modifying the national and division bylaws was a time consuming task but makes the association strong now and for the future. This past year, the national and division banking procedures and the national election procedures were revised and adopted. A new strategic plan is being constructed and we hope to have this in place with the new accreditation in the near future. Working with the leaders of your association, the national board, the division leaders and directors and national staff was a pleasure, and the time has passed quickly. The stage has been set and the time is now for the next generation to learn from our current leaders and continue the tradition to make USPTA the leaders in certification and education of tennis. The foundation was laid long ago, we have never been stronger. *

INSIDE COACHING Creating Value as an Assistant
Tennis Professional by Boris Fetbroyt, USPTA Elite Professional
A
re you considering getting into the tennis industry? Do you want to be a director of tennis one day? If you answered yes to both questions, I welcome you to the tennis residency! The most important thing you can do to start your career off on the right path and gain credibility in the industry is to get USPTA certified! A medical resident is a person who has an M.D., meaning they have completed four years of school, but they are not yet qualified to do anything. An M.D. is just a piece of paper saying you did your time in the lecture hall/lab. A medical resident practices medicine in a supervised setting for three years to complete training in general internal medicine and is where they learn how to be a doctor. So how do we translate that to the tennis industry? Consider your USPTA Certification the same as a medical student completing medical school and getting their M.D. Now let the residency grind begin! Often you hear a director of tennis say, “we wear many hats in our position” and yes this is true. However, it’s important to understand that it’s not only the director who wears many hats, its also the assistant tennis professionals! Research has shown that country clubs are struggling to survive; less people are joining country clubs and clubs are reducing initiation costs just to get members through the door to cover operating costs through monthly dues. So, you might ask how does that affect the tennis department? Simple; the tennis department will undergo budget cuts and will have to find ways to keep expenses low. So, what should you expect? Expect 70-hour weeks, be prepared to call it your
second home, understand it’s a lifestyle and learn as much as you can! Speaking from personal experience, I started my career right after graduating from the University of Maryland in 2010 and was hired at the Country Club of Fairfax. I was hired as an Assistant Tennis Professional where part of my salary agreement was working the tennis desk four days a week which included a mixture of day and night shifts. My day shift hours were from 6 a.m. till 4 p.m. and my night shift hours ran from 4 till 11 p.m. So, what value and experience did I obtain during my desk shifts? Below are some key components that I learned working the desk shift and how it helped me build my lesson book.
Court Maintenance
Every morning shift I had a few on court duties that I was in charge of as the assistant tennis pro. My first duty was manually watering our indoor red clay courts with a hose. This taught me how to properly water indoor red clay courts and learn how much water was needed based on how dry they were and based on the weather outside. The courts were covered by a tennis dome so outside weather played a key role on how much watering was needed. This process would usually take an hour. My second duty was to sweep and line our eight outdoor Har-Tru courts before morning play started at 8 a.m. Learning how to properly sweep the courts with a golf cart and line the courts is very key in time management and getting the courts open in time. If the courts irrigation system requires above ground watering, you want to make sure you
know how to use the watering control box if extra water is needed. The control box usually has a set time on it, so you need to understand how much time is needed based on the condition of the court and the weather for that day. My third duty was to make sure all water coolers were replaced with fresh water, cups restocked, trash containers were emptied, and towels were fully restocked. My night shift duties were pretty much similar as my opening duties. Making sure your courts look clean and play well is super important to your current membership as well as perspective members that take tours of your facility. Most importantly, the experience you obtain regarding court maintenance is priceless and takes repetition to learn.
Stringing
Another important aspect of the tennis residency while working the front desk is stringing. The string machine is often located in the pro-shop where you’re visible to incoming members and prospective membership. Often the person working the desk is also stringing racquets. It’s very important to be efficient in stringing because there could be times where you go from having a slow month to members dropping off 20 racquets in two days. Another benefit of stringing is you earn commission from every racquet you string, so the quicker you can string during your desk hours, the more money you earn. Starting out as a young pro in the private club industry and not having a full lesson book, the stringing commission is a great source of revenue. (Continued on p. 52)

Communication
Communication is super key in the private club industry and first impressions play an important role when it comes to greeting members and prospective members that come through the door during your desk hours. Impressions of people are often formed very early in a relationship and an impression once formed, is very difficult to change. In general, it is worth noting that first encounters with potential staff, members or vendors will set the tone of the relationship. Whether or not people join your staff, join the club, take lessons or buy from the pro shop may very well depend on their first impression. So, what must you do to make a good first impression? Below are some main actions you can take to enhance your image. 1. Appearance– Make sure your dress, grooming and health are excellent. This means wearing clean, well fitting clothes, being neatly groomed and appear fit as a fiddle. Look like you are the tennis professional! 2. Name – Take the initiative by introducing yourself, learning the club members names and something about him/her. Continue to use his/ her name throughout the conversation as it will make you closer immediately. Visualize his/her name as if it was written on the front of their shirt. 3. Attention – Show that you are interested in them. Make eye contact, smile and lean forward slightly. Ask questions about their work and family without being intrusive. Learn what his/her personal and family needs are. 4. Attitude – Convey a positive and confident, but not arrogant, attitude about your abilities to produce a successful product. Carry yourself in a strong, but sympathetic manner that exhibits your leadership talents.
5. Informative – Be informative, cooperative and agreeable. Show the person that you have common interests and views. Let them know what is available at the club and what a quality tennis operation you direct. Show how these meet the needs of the family. 6. Comfortable – Put the person at ease by eliminating any talk of selling or pressure to buy. You want to be the information center that gives membership the facts to make their decision. You also want good feelings in the person anytime the member is at the club. This means when taking a lesson, buying a racquet, playing in a tournament or being a guest of a member, make the person feel at home and soon it will be their home. 7. Thank You – Let the person know how much you enjoyed meeting him. Thank them for their time. Thank them for their business. Do whatever is necessary to show sincere appreciation for the experience of their encounter. Follow up with a note or call.
Visibility
One of the best values of working day and night desk shifts is the visibility access to your tennis membership. The fact that you work some shifts during the day and some during the night, you get to experience the different types of membership that play tennis. For example, during your morning shifts is the time when you’re visible to most of the members that play interclub, contract time, cardio tennis and general
lessons. In the afternoon, your time may be with juniors that participate in your clinics followed members who play in evening contract time or drill groups. By being visible to most of the membership, you are adding potential lesson revenue as long as your communication skills are proper.
Building your Book
There are many ways to build your lesson book. Members take lessons for many various reasons. Some members like to take lessons with the director or head pro, who have the best coaching certifications or a high-level playing career. Others like to take lessons where personalities are the best fit. It’s important to remember each member has a different goal when it comes to lessons: some want to get better to play in competitive leagues, some play just for the social aspect of it and some play just for the workout. Others just walk in and reserve whatever pro is available at that current time. By being visible to most of the membership and learning how to properly communicate with membership along with obtaining proper certifications, you have put yourself in the best position to build your lesson book. In conclusion, working the desk will help build supplemental income while trying to increase your lesson book. The knowledge you can learn is priceless. As you move up in the industry, you will be ready to wear many different hats that are expected of a tennis professional. Don’t expect your director to do everything for you. Go out and build your own value! Remember: success isn’t owned, its leased and rent is due every day!*
