What a great time we had in Las Vegas for the 2019 USPTA World Convention. From the speakers, the weather, to catching up with fellow professionals and the fact that we just happen to be in Las Vegas. I just want to say if you have never been to a World Convention I would highly recommend than you put that on your bucket list especially that for 2020 when we will be in New Orleans and then back to Las Vegas in 2021. This is the time that we start talking about Missouri Valley USPTA Division Convention. Well, I am happy to say we are back in Kansas City for 2020! Home of the CHIEFS! Our dates are set for February 20th & 21st at The Kansas City Country Club. So mark your calendars as we prepare to deliver a conference with some "wow" factor for you. Details coming soon with our Friday email blast. For some of you this December is the end of your 3 year cycle to earn your 6 educational credits. It is imperative that you get the necessary education credits. It is so easy. You can log into uspta.com then under "Education" put your curser on "Continuing Education Credit" and click on "Get Your Six" and follow the directions from there. Lastly, I encourage you all to remember those less fortunate than ourselves at this time of year. Get together with your staff and find an organization that you all feel strong about helping. Come up with an event, donate your time and have your members help out. It is the time for caring and the holidays are the best place to start!

USPTA Names Five New Master Professionals at 2019 World Conference in Las Vegas LAS VEGAS – The United States Professional Tennis Association held its Awards Lunch on Wednesday during the 2019 USPTA World Conference presented by Havana Bob’s at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Jason Hazley, Dan Hopkins, Levander Kelley, Dave Moyer and Sid Newcomb were named USPTA Master Professionals. Becoming a USPTA Master Professional is the highest rating achievable by a tennis professional. Qualified applicants must hold an Elite Professional rating for 10 years, complete the required number of education hours and fulfill a broad spectrum of industry service. The Master Professional Committee makes the final decision on the review of applicants. Hazley currently serves as the president of USPTA Louisiana and works as the Director of Tennis at the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club, where he works alongside general manager and fellow USPTA Master Professional Brett Schwartz. Hazley played collegiately at LSU and was a two-time Second-Team All SEC selection and a First-Team selection in 2003. Hopkins coached tennis at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana for 31 years. Hopkins led the men to the NCAA DIII Tournament each of his last four seasons. He founded the women’s team in 1996 and led them to two HCAC regular-season championships and two NCAA DIII Tournament appearances. Hopkins also coached at Terre Haute South High School, where he led the boys for 17 years and the girls for nine. He led the boys to two state Final Four appearances and the girls to a state runner-up finish. He was named Indiana Coach of the Year in 1992 and was inducted into the Indiana High School Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998. Continue Pg 8

Kelley has coached high school tennis for over 25 years and currently coaches the boys’ varsity tennis team at Powhatan High School in Powhatan, Va. In his first year coaching the team, Kelley led them to their first-ever playoff appearance. He is very involved in the community, volunteering his time at local high schools and founding the Richmond Tennisbums. Kelley overcame racial discrimination and taught himself to play tennis as a child, and continued playing while he was in the Army – he served over 20 years and retired as a U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Medic – and has competed in various USTA tournaments and Pro-Ams since retiring. Moyer is the regional vice president of the USPTA Southwest Division Board of Directors and serves as Director of Tennis at The Country Club at DC Ranch in Scottsdale, Ariz. In his nine years at the club, Moyer has overseen a tennis operation that has more than doubled in adult participation, increased in junior participation by 600% and grown to have three full-time USPTA professionals on staff. Newcomb is the National Head Tester at the USPTA World Headquarters in Lake Nona, Fla. Previously, Newcomb was the director of tennis at Peninsula Community Center in Redwood City, Calif., where he helped establish the Life Advantage Tennis and Tutoring program. Newcomb played tennis and varsity basketball at John Brown University before a brief career on the ATP Tour.

USPTA Hall Of Fame Welcomes Dick and Frank LAS VEGAS – The United States Professional Tennis Association held its Awards Lunch last week during the 2019 USPTA World Conference presented by Havana Bob’s at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Longtime Stanford University tennis coaches Dick Gould and Frank Brennan, Jr. were each presented with the Tim Heckler Hall of Fame Award. Gould coached men’s tennis at Stanford for 38 seasons from 1967 to 2004. He won the program’s first NCAA team national championship in 1973 and repeated in 1974. Gould and the Cardinal would go on to win 15 more national championships; every senior class until 2004 won at least one national championship. Gould coached such greats of the game as John McEnroe, Roscoe Tanner, Sandy Mayer and Bob & Mike Bryan. Fifty of Gould’s players became All-Americas, 13 went on to win Grand Slam titles and eight became Olympians. Gould was also instrumental in fundraising for Stanford’s $20 million Taube Tennis Center. He was inducted into the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994. Gould is a USPTA Elite Professional and has been a member for 38 years. Brennan, Jr. coached women’s tennis at Stanford for 21 seasons from 1980 to 2000. He won 10 NCAA team national championships in that time, including six in a row from 1986 to 1991, and posted four undefeated seasons. When Brennan, Jr. retired after the 2000 season, Lele Forood, a former player of his since her childhood, took over coaching with his son, Frankie, as an assistant. Forood and Brennan III have continued Stanford’s dominance with 10 national championships since 2000. In addition to his 10 championships, Brennan, Jr. coached 41 All-Americas and posted a win-loss record of 510-50. He was inducted into the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 and the ITA Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006. Brennan, Jr. is a USPTA Elite Professional and has been a member for 54 years. Tim Heckler was elected president of the USPTA in 1980 and was CEO for 30 years until 2012. As CEO, Heckler increased membership five-fold, revolutionized the Association through computerization and established the USPTA as the foremost organization of tennis-teaching professionals in the world. He was inducted into the USPTA Hall of Fame in 2000.
