Depth & Taking Time Away Focus: Consistency Depth Take shots early Know how to volley Always looking to work on consistency with depth. I want my players to have their consistent deep shots produce short balls so they can approach or have an easier shot. You have to have drills and games that force this habit. CC & movement are both equally important. Teaching kids to take the ball early and take time away is a lost art. Preparation on the volley is something I really focus on. Have the racquet all the way back immediately is so important so they don’t take too big a back swing. Make everything as simple as possible.

Karen Ronney Karen is an award-winning national coach, author, speaker, mentor and social media/marketing specialist. writing skills to author Proud Parents’ Guide to Raising Athletic, Balanced, and Coordinated Kids, which won 34 publishing awards. As a player, Ronney received an NCAA All-Conference singles and doubles honors from California State University Northridge. She is currently the Director of Marketing for SCTA Foundation. Karen is honored to present the ROG Pathway in this USPTA California Conference. A Compass of Competencies in the Red-Orange-Green Pathway Developing a tennis player is not a race to the yellow ball but more like a long distance marathon. Ever wonder about the steps from moving a student through each milestone of tennis fundamentals from Red to Orange Ball, Orange to Green, and Green to Yellow? It’s something many pros ponder. For example, when should you introduce the various grips, spins, footwork, swinging volleys and slice serves? When should kids start competing? How do you teach a positive competitive mindset while developing strokes in the ROG Pathway? This workshop will help you with guidelines to structure your lessons in a game based methodology while paving the road to your students’ tennis success.

Jez once questioned Carlos Moya who was #2 in the world at the time, how he defines the importance of movement in tennis! Carlos explained that balance was the essential ingredient to great movement which was critical to sustained performance at the highest level! Further proof is if we look at the top 4 players in the men’s game over the last 2 decades Federer, Nadal, Djokovic & Murray - we would all likely agree those players were also the best 4 movers in the game! Here is a dead ball movement drill series created based on the movement patterns commonly utilized by the best movement coaches and applicable to all-player levels! 1. Down Line/Middle (6 balls 1 player or 3 balls each 2 players & switch) - Stay Down & on Top & Transfer 2. Out Wide – Target X-court or Deep Middle (6 balls 1 player or 3 balls each 2 players & switch) – Cross Over & Dynamic Movement – “Keep Ball Out In-front” 3. Push Back – Heavy Middle (4 balls 1 player or 2 balls each 2 players & switch) – Drop Back & Cross Over 4. Short Ball – Approach Target 1st Instinct (4 balls 1 player or 2 balls each 2 players & switch) – Hit & Dynamic Move Through “Chest Height & Create Space for Unrestricted Swing on Approach” 5. Combo Anything Goes (5-6 balls 1 player)
