President’s Message

W

e are all super excited to have finally been given the clearance to open outdoor tennis! Whether your club has already re-opened or is still waiting, it is great seeing our industry opening their doors and getting back to what we love doing. As exciting as this seems, we must remain cautiously optimistic as we invite our clients back to the court. I am happy to hear that a vast majority of places are scheduling private lessons and open court time. We have considered this a soft opening, and a chance to really make sure that the safety protocols we formulated are actually enforced and prove to be effective. There will certainly be a learning curve; however, it is our responsibility to keep our staff, juniors, and adults safe. As we re-open, without a doubt there will be an initial influx of diehard clients. They are super happy to be playing, and will give us the confidence and the reinforcement we are looking for as we fully re-open. As important as they are in rebuilding our business, we need to pay special attention to the next wave of clients, and the ones who have not responded to your communication. They are the ones that are a bit more skeptical and a bit more cautious. They are the customers that want to see what the differences are, what precautions we are taking and how things are different. Last but not least, there is still another group of customers out 2 — Summer 2020 Eastern Newsletter

there that simply will not return for a while due to high sensitivity, high risk, or simply a matter of financial prioritizing. No matter the reason, we have to respect their decisions and work hard at making them feel safe and comfortable enough to return to tennis. USTA has created some great resources for facilities and players regarding safety and protocol to keep everyone safe, including staff and clients. If you have not already, check out the USTA EASTERN COVID-19 UPDATES online. Make sure that during the lockdown all the webinars you attended, online certifications you took, or even any books you read are submitted to National for additional credits. We are quickly coming to the end of our three-year education cycle. USPTA and USTA want to recognize the financial hardship everyone is going through and want to help during this pandemic. The USPTA and USTA have agreed, through a very generous grant by the USTA, to pay your 2021 membership dues in full! This has never been done before, and will prove to be an immense help during these unprecedented times. However, in order to be eligible for this subsidy,

you must be a USPTA member in good standing. This includes current membership dues, having your required education credits, and completing the USTA Safe Play training. This is a perfect example of how the USTA is invested in our association. As we continue to look forward, I’m sure there is still much uncertainty in summer camps. All of us from the USPTA hope that we will be able to have our summer camps, academies and weekly programming that is the lifeblood of our industry. There is still much uncertainty, and information seems to still change on a daily basis. Remember to continue being patient with your staff, members, supervisors, the government, and most importantly your family. We know Covid-19 has been very difficult for everyone, especially those living paycheck to paycheck. We are thinking about you, and our prayers are with all of you that have lost someone. We will get back to work soon, and hopefully better than ever. Thank you for being a valued member of the USPTA, and be safe. * Jason Speirs USPTA Eastern President

Burnout Variables and Monitoring Technique Farhad Roshanaie, USpta Elite Professional

T

he health of an athlete and their desire to practice and compete are the most important parts of a long-term developmental path. The coaches and parents are responsible for teaching the athletes to recognize the fine line between adequate exertion of stress to improve their bodies and minds versus overstressing, which can result in burnout. It is worth mentioning that a well-recovered athlete adapts to stress from training, and this helps to reach the performance peak effectively. However, overtraining delays this process and can endanger athlete’s health or lead to withdrawal from athletic activities. Besides the coach’s observations, there are some other methods to monitor and measure physical and emotional stresses: 1. Weekly self-assessment: Some physical, mental, emotional and behavioral changes can be symptomatic of burnout. For example, fluctuations in mood, energy level, concentration, memory, eating habits and sleep pattern could be a sign of burnout. Since 1996, high-performance athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport use “Form 1 – Weekly Self-assessment Sheet” [1] you will see a number of variables that should be rated by the athlete on a daily basis. This is a simple and effective tool to help the athlete avoid burnout. 2. Weight is another variable one should monitor. Any rapid weight loss may indicate dehydration and/ or poor general health, as well as burnout that that needs to be addressed immediately. Every day after one wakes up, before eating and after using the restroom, one should record their weight in “Form 2 Resting Hear Rate and Weight”.

3. Heart rate correlates with the intensity of the training and its toll on one’s body and mind. One should measure their resting heart rate after they wake up in the morning while still lying down in bed. There are three ways to measure one’s resting heart rate: 1- place two fingers lightly on the thumb side in the wrist, or 2- place two fingers lightly along the throat just to the side of the windpipe; in both methods one counts their heart rate for 10 seconds and multiply the number by six to get one’s resting heart rate per minute, 3- buying a heart rate monitor, which is a popular method to use in a variety of physical trainings. Every day after one wakes up, they should log their resting heart rate number in “Form 2 - Resting Hear Rate and Weight.” One notices a red flag when their resting heart rate is 15% above the normal. In this case one keeps the undertaken exercise minimal, if at all.

Unfortunately a lot of athletes get injured in the long-run. Besides proper conditioning training, one should monitor their health condition before reaching the point of injury. If one is on the verge of burnout, they should take measures to address both physical and mental health, such as adjusting the volume and intensity of the training, improving sleep quality and time, meditating, listening to music, using breathing techniques, seeking psychotherapy, enjoying a massage, visualizing, adding social time or taking a vacation. These measures can help rejuvenate one’s mind and enhance one’s motivation to return to the court in a more optimal condition. *

Executive USPTA Director’s Report eastern board

H

ello USPTA Eastern members! I hope everyone is safe and doing well. We have all been through quite an ordeal over the past three months and it appears that we have a great deal of work ahead of us. These are times that test who we are as professionals and as people. I think Arthur Ashe said it best, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

So, let’s get going!

Our division conference was cancelled in May, but we will be offering a Virtual Conference on June 9-11. The application is attached, and our speaker line-up is extremely strong. You will receive .5 credits for each hour session. Unlike an “in-person” conference, you will not receive credits for simply registering for the conference. You will be able to receive up to 4.5 credits if you attend all 9 sessions. Join us! Our World Conference will not be held in New Orleans in September. Instead, USPTA National will be presenting a Virtual Conference in September – the risk is too great and many of our members have been financially affected by the pandemic, so paying to travel did not make sense. The World Conference will be in Las Vegas in 2021 and in New Orleans in 2022. Information regarding the 2020 World Conference Virtual Event will be coming out from USPTA National soon. Jason Speirs and the USPTA Eastern Board have done an excellent job putting together several webinars and educational opportunities for our members. We will continue to offer these educational events and by August we will begin to live events, safely. We will keep you posted on the testing schedule when we determine it is safe to do so.

6— — Summer Summer 2020 2020 Eastern Eastern Newsletter Newsletter

Some very good news! The USTA and USPTA have come together and agreed to pay the 2021 dues of all USPTA members in good standing! You need to have your education credits up to date, your dues need to be current as of 2020 and you need to have the USTA Safe Play protocol completed. Please make sure you are complying, and you will have no dues to pay in 2021. Thank you to the USTA and the USPTA!! In closing, I realize we all have been through a traumatic experience, and so have our students and clients. Tennis is a game, our game. People need to return to the things in life which gives them joy and tennis gives people joy! I am happy to be part of a community that could help people get back to their lives. I am reminded of an excellent quote delivered by Sir Richard Branson regarding tennis players: “Tennis, like business, moves so quickly that if you dwell on the past for even a few minutes, an opportunity will have passed, and the moment will be lost. You must get into the right frame of mind in order to perform your best and need to be able to put setbacks behind you instantly. In effect, the discipline and determination it takes to compete as a professional athlete is not unlike what it takes to be an entrepreneur.” We need to keep moving forward, keep playing on. Please be safe and stay well. Thank you for being a USPTA member. *

education Update! jason joseph, USPTA Eastern education chairperson

In 2013, the USPTA came to the conclusion that in order to be competitive, both globally and domestically, our certified tennis providers should engage in continuing education to help meet the challenges that exist in the field of providing quality tennis instruction and play. The minimum requirements have currently evolved to 12 hours (or 6.0 USPTA credits) of continuing tennis coaching education every three years, to help meet the needs of an evolving industry. The USPTA and USTA has agreed, through the generous grant from both associations, to pay your 2021 membership dues in full! This will be an immense help during unprecedented times. However, in order to be eligible for this subsidy, you must be a USPTA member in good standing in 2020. That includes up-to-date membership dues as well as continuing education requirements. It will also require completing the USTA Safe Play online course as well as completing a background check. An advantage to completing the USTA Safe Play is that it will immediately give you 0.75 credits towards your USPTA Continuing Education Requirements.
